What is the greatest anime opening ever to you?
It can take into account the opening visually, audibly or both.
For me, it's Detective Conan Opening 4 (Unmei no Ruuretto Mawashite). Keep in mind that I am very early into the show (around 160 episodes), which means that I've only reached the 7th opening out of...51.
Seriously. The amount of emotion that I felt from this opening seems almost unreal. It genuinely gave me chills the first few times that I heard it. I think I love absolutely everything about this opening. I feel that this song can paint a visual story.
The first 15 seconds leads us to expect that the song is different than how it really sounds, creating the element of surprise. The drums at 00:31 gives us an introduction to the song (I'd also like to add that the visual of Conan and Ran staring at the sunrise adds to it being an introduction to the song, as the sunrise symbolizes the "start" of the day. It's rather symbolic, since the song ends with Conan being Ran's light in the darkness), and as the song beginning at 00:36 creates a sense of peace and thought, perfectly matching both the lyrics and Conan's character. The guitar at 00:47 is almost a warning that the song will become more intense, as the entirety of 00:48-00:58 gives a sense of "resolution" and changes the tempo, also letting us know the song will become emotional and intense. The symphony instruments let us know that the first phase of the song has concluded, as the thudding and guitar changes the sense of emotion you get, intensifying the situation and even making it seem as if the tempo has increased. I'd argue the guitar is one of the most important parts of Opening 4. The remainder of the song is capable of eliciting the emotion and intention behind the lyrics and visuals.
Visually, outside of basically introducing the main cast you'll see throughout the series, the visuals from the 1:00 mark onward have gorgeous cel art. The part where Conan/Shinichi is depicted in a mirror and being Ran's light in the darkness is such a small sequence, yet lets us know so much about the two characters. Heck, even the very final visual that shows Conan next to Kogoro, and Shinichi next to Ran is an incredible contrast of how the two versions of Shinichi interact with both characters. I'll also add that when Conan starts running at the 1:00 minute mark (my forum avatar) it's animated with some attention to detail; He is running "loose", yet focused and repeatedly. As the camera tilts it lets us know that his run is very uniform, although his arms are far apart and not tight. It is in line with how Conan/Shinichi is a soccer player.
I don't know, maybe I'm overthinking it. This is what I found in this song that I love so much. It's truly an amazing song, lyrically, visually and instrumentally. This song tells an entire story and gives so much feedback just through audio. It was around this moment that I realized I fell in love with Detective Conan as a series and franchise.
Oh, and the second version of this song pales in comparison. It's not bad, but this second version totally undermines the effectiveness of version one.
Detective Conan OP4 V2
I will give it kudos in that it totally does sound like a more "modernized" version with heavier emphasis on the guitar. It 100% sounds like a song from the very late 90s (which it is from 1998-1999).
EDIT: Adding on to this thread with several other openings.
1. Air Gear OP is visually alright, but the song is just amazing at capturing the feel of the show and its sense of imagery. This show is definitely one of Toei's best.
2. ŌBAN Star Racers OP is probably second for me behind Detective Conan OP4. A brilliant opening for a brilliant anime, which you most likely don't know. Sadly, it's so obscure that there is no subbed version or the Japanese audio, and by normal means only the English dub can be found. Only episode 1 of the Japanese version has been subbed, and if you want to watch the rest in Japanese you'll have to stick with using the subtitles for the English audio over the Japanese. For an anime that is now fifteen years old, the CG is rather impressive.
3. Katekyou Hitman Reborn OP1 would probably be third behind Ōban's. Lyrically, it is just so beautiful and form.
4. To Love-Ru OP3 is a great one. I think this is where I started to really enjoy the series, and slowly realized that
To Love-Ru is a sequel to the anime/manga Black Cat. Muh friggin Tearju.
These next two are not anime, but rather video games with anime openings by none other than Production I.G.
1. Namco x Capcom OP - Brave New World is beautiful in every way. Visually and audibly, and as someone who just loves these characters interacting, it's amazing.
2. Sonic Riders OP has an alright song, but visually is awesome. Reminds me of Air Gear.
Finally, I'll conclude with saying that One Piece openings 1, 3, 10-15, 20 and 22 are all just amazing. Every other opening is really good, not as the ones I listed though.

I was immediately sold on the first listen. This type of music is just really my style. I love Aimer in general and her discography is one of my favorites. I'm very happy she got to sing for the Heaven's Feel movies. The tempo isn't as fast-paced as your regular battle anime hype song but ufotable really made it work through the right timing of animation.
Also, Aimer and Sawano Hiroyuki are one of the best combos in anime music. Her songs for Gundam Unicorn are some of the best I've ever heard to be honest.
My answer changes every week. Answers I've given in the past include the the japanese/slavic choir from oshii's ghost in the shell, both openings from SAC and the break blade OP. My current obsessions are the first knights of sidonia OP and the second gundam x op.
EDIT: Also the second OP from deen's fate and gunslinger girl. Great songs I listen to them in almost a daily basis.
well there are lots for me but heck right now i go with this
Do you feel alone?
Can you hear me now?
Your mind is so far away still on earth
Many times you are hurting yourself
You can't be just a life on the shelf
It's only you that can fly this new unicorn
Into the sky
And it's every time, you hurt yourself with knives
And I'm calling, calling out your name again
If you're holding, holding onto fear I knew
The blind can open, let light shine through
And I say
Why we can't stop all this sacrifice?
I know that all the lies became the stone in your heart
I wonder how long you gonna survive
We didn't see all it's meaning
I just listened to the OP's suggestion and it's pretty goddamn amazing.
For me, the best opening is Unravel from Tokyo Ghoul. This one really is burned into my soul because Tokyo Ghoul was one of the few series that I got into the manga before the anime even came out. So when I sat down to watch the first episode and this beautiful, haunting, melancholy song started accompanied by some beatiful animation, I just fell in love. Also, it matches the theme of the manga/anime perfectly. I'm going to have to listen to it right now ahahaha
Ah I had such high hopes for TG. I don't know how they screwed it up..
i like too many anime openings !! tho, my favorites are the ops of death parade, noragami aragoto, 1st and 2nd season of snk, baccano, beastars, 1st and 2nd season of bsd-
wait, yeah !! my favorite op is reason living from the 2nd season of bungou stray dogs :D
my favorites are:
eva's opening. it's super upbeat, unique and flashy.
psycho pass s2's opening, the second season is a pile of shit but the opening is beautiful and interesting. the repeating visuals were a great choice.
these are the ones I always bring up. there's plent of more but if I start making a list I'll just drift further away from the topic.
The greatest might be Cruel Angel's Thesis, just because its so ubiquitous among anime fans, and almost everyone knows at least the hook.
My personal favorite is Logos Naki World from the original Hellsing. It's got a unique horror bent to it, but is generally calming to listen to.
Fruits basket Op1.Yeah for me it was heart soothing.I never missed any second watched till end.
"When they're alive, you can enjoy watching them struggle. When they're dead, you can enjoy tearing out their guts. Tales are things you get to enjoy twice."

Do you mean the 2019 Fruits' Basket? Still haven't watched, last time I saw Fruits Basket was in 2011-2013 or something. I'm gonna hold over until Season 2 ends.
Also, Yuu Yuu Hakushou's opening is really amazing. Instrumentally, I prefer the Japanese opening, but the English opening is almost as good.
In general, I prefer the Japanese version over the English one. Besides Mawatari Matsuko just hitting them notes, the sense of rhyme and consistent flow/rhythm is something truly beautiful. The English version is still great, especially for being a great translation of the lyrics. (Also, Yuu Yuu Hakushou has some of the most beautiful cel art and animation I've ever seen.)
Grand Blue by Shonan No Kaze. because it's just amazing. apart from that
Fate series has pretty nice bangers from Aimer or no longer existing Kalafina. F
There's definitely more technically impressive ones in terms of animation but in terms of kickass music and memorable visuals these are some of my faves.
the OP initially reminds everyone the origins of the story by showing the Elric mother, the father leaving, and the burning of the house. Then, we are introduced to some of the key characters within the show and we get to see a little action between them. The music just starts out slow and calm but a change takes place in the music which indicates the main characters choice of leaving their home. Then it switches back to a calm tone up until 0:49. Here, the music picks up to show the drastic changes of Ed losing his arm and leg, Alphonse losing his body, and Wenry not losing her body parts but being affected by the first two as a type of pressure comes forth and moves her.
My favorite OP is Monster's op, and if you take lyrics under then consideration then Steins;Gate op. But since you are a detective Conan fan as well, have you listened to this yet?
FMAB- OP's 1 and 2
JoJo- Great Days and Fighting Gold.
Code Geass- Colours
HxH- Departure
Vinland Saga- OP 1
Mob Psycho 100- OP 2
Yu Yu Hakusho- Smile Bomb
Fate Zero- OP 2
My two favorites are ADAMAS (Sword Art Online: Alicization - OP1) and Hikaru Nara (Shigatsu wa Kimi no Uso - OP1), but there are several others that could join, too. Anyway, I already set up several rankings on my favorites, amid my addictions to rank things.
The greatest for me is Zankoku na Tenshi no Thesis no doubt. It gives me chills from the beginning to the end. Makes me want to laugh, to cry, to jump, to scream, to dance, to sing at the top of my lungs.
FSN UBW OP 2 (Aimer-Brave Shine)
Evangelion Opening (Cruel Angel Thesis)
Vinland Saga OP 1 (Mukanjyo-Survive Said The Prophet, anime need more metalcore opening)
LoGH OP 1 (Skies Of Love, sounds so patriotic)
