Why do people like dark and depressing shows?

The name says it all, why do so many people like to watch shows that would cause them to fall them into depression? I'll use an example: Attack on Titan. I read the manga up to the 40's and 50's chapter mark and during this time, all I can think of is: what kind of sick, twisted human being made this? You have people dieing left and right (quite guesomely I might add), a scene where it is implied that a BABY WAS EATEN, a scene where someone shoots themselves in the mouth (which says to me that if you are up angist a enemy that you can't hope to defeat, all you can do is kill you self), the fans of the show tell me there is hope when their CLEARLY isn't, etc. I just can't understand why this show would appeal to anyone when it it seems to be written by someone who should be locked up in a insane asylum. Maybe it because I only watch/read happy go lucky shonens, that might be the reason why (things like One piece, Naruto, Dragon Ball Z, Fairy Tail, Sword Art Online post ep 3, and the like). I think it's more than that though. Feel free to answer my question, I'm just so puzzled as to why people like these type of shows.

Yep, that's the thing : you want adventure story because you lack adventure in your life, you want mystery story because you lack mystery in your life, you want magical story because you lack magic in your life.
You want depressing story because your life is too happy and.... that's just depressing..

AoT might be for morbid reasons. Same with this season's Re:Zero. Some people just love violence.

There's also a hope effect ("there is so much suffering, so I'll root for the good guys to fix everything") which is also in shounen, but here due to the cruelty it can get accentuated.

Another reason is atmosphere. I've heard Texhnolyze has an amazing nihilistic atmosphere, same with Ergo Proxy, which has a grim distopian atmosphere filled with barren lands and dark colours.
It is only with the heart that one can see rightly; What is essential is invisible to the eye.

But does the heart have the right perspective?

If an anime can actually manage to make me feel depressed, it probably did something right. If it's done tastefully, without being depressing for the sake of the 'shock factor' (I'm looking at you AoT), then I have no quarrels with it.

I think it is because they shock you and turn your emotions upside down. You might be happy and then in the next second your mood changes ,that's when I know it's a good one..And also people like extremes.. Taking a look on the "wild side" of things is appealing for our dark wishes that can not be satisfied in other ways I guess :D

Why the hell do you like Fairy Tail? One Piece? Naruto? Dragon Ball Z? well because each person has their opinion and that's the reason why.

Maybe it's because I've had depression before (and I had it for YEARS), but happy go lucky shonens are the only anime that get any sort of emotional or "fun" response from me. It's the only reason why I refeuse to watch shows like game of thrones or the walking dead (I played the tale tell game and watched the first season of that show and I greatly regret it).

Yeah but Clannad didn't have any baby eating scenes as far as I'm aware xD. Still managed to be reasonably realistic and tasteful.. until the end at least. I don't dislike depressing shows, I actually enjoy them xD. The HakoMari novel is doing a great job at depressing me right now.

Because we identify with but don't share the emotions? You can enjoy the portrayal without actual getting depressed yourself.

Dark and depressing is quite nice to watch when it's well executed but I think there's a weird misconception in the anime community that an anime should either be dark or not. I see a lot of reviews saying something like, this anime was ruined because of the quick switches between light and dark mood or the use of comedy in this anime ruins the mood. Mixed is perfectly fine, even very good.

How? It uses the shock factor twice in the whole anime, and a twist isn't a twist if you see it coming. Even then, it isn't the shock that gets us, but the characters reactions to the shock that makes us emotional.

Its just a matter of preference. People like to know more about what depression does to you, or how characters deal with the depression. Stuff like it. You can get lessons from dark anime.

For me, it comes down to the story. Most of the time, happy-go-lucky anime are there to make us feel good, but they don't have an engaging story. Sometimes I want to feel good and laugh and feel epic and badass. Most of the time though, I like to be sucked into a world with an engaging and emotional story. Darker and more depressing shows have an easier time keeping us interested because the world is interesting, whereas happier shows keep us hooked with their comedy and fun characters. I like both but sometimes I want to be invested in a more serious story, especially after I have been watching the previous kind of a show a lot.

I respect your opinion, bro. Different minds are suited for different things, I didn't dislike SnK, it just didn't reach to me on the emotional level like it did with you, and many others. If I was able to connect with it, I probably would've seen it in the same way you did.

there wasn't anything shockfactor about Calnnad AS. Shock Factor is when something horrible happens without any foreshadowing, however Clannad AS had so much foreshadowing that they nearly came out and said what was going to happen.

Assuming it's a "good" show, the atmosphere and seeing a different facet of characters that you're not going to get in "happier" shows.

Every time someone says that, I show them this video. The ending was not an asspull. There was a lot of buildup to it throughout both of its seasons. There was no shock factor involved and the ending of the show was brilliant.

I don't think people want dark and depressing 24/7 there's a reason comic relief exists, it's just that when shows deal with edgy and controversial subjects it peaks people's interest, it also makes a fantasy world more immersive and realistic when the gritty parts of life are awknowledged, otherwise you can pretty much predict that nothing THAT bad can happen to the characters because this show "isn't that kind of show".

The darker and more depressing a show is the more rewarding the resolutions to the conflicts are, just like how the more threatening and scary an enemy is the more engaging the drama surrounding them is and the more relieving it is when they are finally overcome.

If characters never die or get hurt it won't be as heart pounding and riveting when they are shown to be in danger, because you begin to assume the creators are afraid to offend or scare the audience too much by showing gritty and dark things. Of course this is only the case for certain dramas where evoking emotions like fear, sadness, and relief are the intention. In genres like comedy or romance the intentions may be different, but showing dark and gritty things when appropriate helps keep the reality.

I think of myself as being, in some extreme terms "emotionally masochistic". I look into shows hoping to cry, most of the time. There isn't really a reason, I guess I almost feel like I'm able to relate better to a character if their emotions are shown to the extreme.

And...happy anime is too boring for me *shrugs*

I find a lot of darker anime series are more mature & deal with topics I have more of an interest in rather than "happier" anime. They also seem to confront topics that could be seen as uncomfortable and wouldn't be seen in more light-hearted stuff & it can be just as much fun to watch the darker side of humanity as well as the more light-hearted side.
Also as I can be quite a cynical person & have a dark sense of humour, if I just watched all the light-hearted stuff, it would be nauseating...so I tend to watch dark & light anime on a rotation as soon as I want something different. At the moment it's all about the dark psychological stuff.
I hope this makes you understand a little more clearly.

They sometimes touch topics that aren't usually debated but are really interesting, it's also enjoyable watching the things from another perspective that the one we usually have, watching a character break down after all the stuff that happens to him, see the point of view of a completely crazy character... etc.

Or just simply, they are just really fun to watch, lots of terrible stuff going on, tension building up that keeps you on the edge of the seat... It just feels fantastic.

I think the authors of this works actually deserve a lot of praise, it's not easy at all to create a well written dark story that can really reach the viewers/readers and amaze them, the characters and the stories are way more complex that the ones in comedic or happy anime for the situations they have to be put in.

Are they crazy like you say? Well, the authors sure read a lot of other dark stories to get the overall idea and then add their own magic to improve them their way.

If no one does, well, call the police to arrest me before I do something terrible, but I'm pretty sure that I'm not the only one that sometimes has crazy, fucked up ideas going on on my head, that I know I would never do, but my mind still thinks about them, well, I'm sure the authors just write said ideas into their script too when they think about them.
