| We know that certain objective differences exist between both adaptations of the same medium (Animation), some of these are art style, soundtrack, trends and tropes... but what drew you to one over the other? of course this is not to say you cannot enjoy both, but I am going to surmise that if you are regularly visiting this website, you likely have a preference for anime over Western Animation. So I ask you, what is your reason for this preference? I will answer first; I prefer anime over western animation because western animation tends to be very unsubtle and anvilicious, even "adult oriented" animation (not porn) tends to be very obvious , I suspect it is because the west cannot envision animation as anything other than "cartoons are for children" whereas our eastern counterparts seem to have a better understanding that people of all age will watch that medium of entertainment. That's not to say anime does not pander to children or lack subtlety, but it seems to at least be self-aware when it does so whereas western animation will have very childish adult characters doing very childish things and pass it off as normal. Or to put it simply; You could never see a Cowboy Bebop (Ironically, given it was meant to emulate western), Neon Genesis Evangelion (Again ironically, given it was greatly influenced by western religion), Berserk, etc. |

That depends on what you would consider the apex of anime quality; Are you talking about the 1990s? 2000s? because I can tell you for certain that the 1980s was a strictly inferior time for anime quality. Regardless, your statement that western cartoons are "improving" is very subjective. Immediately I can think of at least one cartoon adaptation that peaked in the 90s and has had inferior spin offs since then; Batman The Animated Series. Over time the new adaptations have failed miserably at equaling its peaks. I still can't envision much in the form of a quality western cartoon that isn't entirely aimed at children (Note: I do enjoy brainless children's entertainment like Regular Show and Adventure Time, I do). Conversely, you look at anime in the 90s and then anime in modern times almost across the board, I'd say it has gotten much better in terms of animation, art style, quality and dialogue. |

That's pretty much it for me it has nothing to do with quality. If the western world took cartoons more seriously I have no doubt they could make cartoons better than anime. |

| I like anime more because I like linear progressive storylines (preferably serious ones) that continue through the whole show. You can't find very many western cartoons like that. I also find anime superior due to the wider variety of genres and demographics that it caters to, which is greater than western animation. |

The reason adult cartoons suck is because they rely on 'being adult' as a ticket to just curse a lot. Children's cartoons often have to have actual jokes. That's why Johnny Bravo and Megas XLR is far more clever than Family Guy. I don't have a preference. I love the anime art style, but I can't choose one or the other. |

| It's probably in my genes, or because anime is generally more meaningful, but that's a no-brainer, western animation are treated as cartoons for kids. There are as many hardcore animation fans in the west, the equivalent of anime in the west terms of popularity are probably western tv shows, why not compare anime to that? Western animation can't really be compared to anime because it just isn't a very big thing as part of the culture. |

| There is a lot more plot that isn't stupid. Most shows that aren't geared toward adults (boring) are geared toward tweens (retarted). There is a lot of humor in both, but anime humor tends to usually be much more edgy and dark than western shows for some reason. The characters are actually well thought out, what a shock. Anime creators are usually willing to create plot points that would, in the west, get them outrage and bashing, but said plot points are monumental and make the anime the masterpieces they are. |

You see things like British comedy and though profane they are, they tend to not rely as heavily as the American continent's comedy style of "More Profanity = More comedy". | I'm a huge fan of Japanese pop culture. But generally it's because there's more variety and more of it. There's plenty of good western cartoons but they usually only fall into one of two categories. You've got the kid's comedy shows like Gravity Falls and Adventure Time and you've got the slightly more mature comedies like The Simpsons and Family Guy. There's certainly exceptions but not many. Don't get me wrong because I think Rick and Morty is absolutely hilarious and it beats the absolute shit out of your typical smutty anime comedy series like Shimoneta. | Japanese voices Going into forbidden territories (see Shinsekai Yori, Monster) Stories about life, love, careers, goals, dreams AND ABOUT ADULTS (see Uchuu Kyoudai, Nodame Cantabile) The majority of Western cartoons are episodic and sitcoms (Fam Guy, Simpsons) which aren't necessarily bad but have no direction and long running plot. Even Conan has a better long running plot than those shows as they throw in main episodes every so often. |
