Crowd Urges Suicidal Woman To Jump Before She Plunges To Her Death

A suicidal woman in Shenyang last Wednesday leaped from a 10th-floor window after being encouraged to jump by crowds of residents who'd gathered below.

According to ET Today, the baying crowd did not call the police, but instead called their friends over to witness the scene together, saying "Come and see this suicide reality show! So exciting!".

"Jump quickly! I'm so tired of waiting," one of them urged while whistling.

The woman, who was half-nekkid, jumped from the building and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Witnesses said they saw a man standing next to the woman before she became emotional and plunged to her death.

Police arrived at the scene and escorted away a man who claimed to be seeing the woman before her death. He explained that he had been standing beside her and intended to pull her back inside before she fell.

Online, the story drew condemnation from web users, one of whom questioned: "If she were your mother or sister, would you still do the same?"

This isn't the first case of its kind to be reported in China. In Shaanxi last year, a indebted woman who'd climbed to the top of a building and threatened to jump to her death was prodded on by a group of school kids who stood below yelling "Hurry up and jump for us!"

Reason number 3 billion why humanity is fucked. This leads to a sub discussion from this tragic story, have you ever dealt with suicidal person? How did it go and what was the end result?

That aside, if they are going to suicide then let them. But I don't think it's something that should be encouraged like this.

Why?

If someone is going to suicide they should just do it not stay by the window to attract the attention of random people.

Many people who are suicidal want someone to stop them, to give them a reason to live.

Anyways these people are disgusting, and you have to wonder what's wrong with their lives to view a woman committing suicide as "entertainment."

Happens more often then you think.

People think its funny, that the person is just doing it for attention, etc. and push them way over the edge when they know nothing about the situation.

I remember watching a suicide on live leak and what struck me the most disgusting was the number of cellphones recording the whole incident. People are more concerned with getting the video on facebook or updating their status than the well being of a fellow human being.

Yeah, the same can be said about a lot of serious situations. No one wants to take responsibility. I mean, I get that you are a bystander and don't know the person, but can't you see that he/she is in dire need of help?

Gotta love the bystander effect

The most frequently cited example of the bystander effect in introductory psychology textbooks is the brutal murder of a young woman named Catherine "Kitty" Genovese. On Friday, March 13, 1964, 28-year-old Genovese was returning home from work. As she approached her apartment entrance, she was attacked and stabbed by a man later identified as Winston Moseley.

Despite Genovese’s repeated calls for help, none of the dozen or so people in the nearby apartment building who heard her cries called police to report the incident. The attack first began at 3:20 AM, but it was not until 3:50 AM that someone first contacted police.

ive been saying the only redemption for humanity is global annihilation but nobody believes me

even the morons who think its funny to make jokes out of this

people that want to suicide are free to suicide but that doesn't mean you should *ever* encourage it, you dont know what kind of shit they might be going through and yeah it can be bad enough to make you want to die. It may be impulsive or it may be carefully thought over thing but you should know that nobody wants to die. If it was up to me or to people, we would all chose to be happy , rich , motivated, carefree.. thats not how life works and when someone is depressed enough to want to die you shouldnt look down on it like you're above them because the wheel of life keeps turning and sometimes you might end up bellow. It doesn't matter how fake your compassion is, its still better than this shit

She was stabbed, then proceeded to call for help in her neighbourhood and was greeted by people doing nothing but watching her bleed out. Pretty sure this is the textbook example of the bystander effect.

yep. to make a long story short, me and a group of friends had to convince someone that there's a lot of reasons why he should continue living, and we eventually were able to. ik it's vague and kind of commonplace but that's pretty much how it went

Well I am glad you did something man. Just talking to the person and giving them a different prospective is important.

Three years ago my buddy, who I haven't really been talking all that much because of our busy lives randomly called me at 2 am. He was slurring his words and was telling me how I was his only real friend. I was touched but was also creeped out because he was talking in the third person. So I kept him on the phone and ran to his apartment. He opened his door and I gave him a hug. Spent 2 hours talking to him and he unloaded all his problems, while I listened. Tbh it shocking to see a guy who I thought was relatively upbeat and happy, secretly be this miserable. After we talked, I made it a mission to see him at least once a day and did this until he had the courage to find a therapist. Happy to say he is a lot better and is doing much better today.

Yeah, they acknowledge that the situation is there but choose not to intervene. Not only that, they wish for it to get worse.

Makes me feel sick inside a little bit. Not only for the woman, but for the woman's family as well. I can't imagine the guilt or thoughts of "if only I had done XXXXXX, she would still be alive." Not even including the grieving process as it already is.

For all those who are in/were in that situation, I pray that whatever God or Gods you may or may not believe in give you strength.

A cry for attention is a cry for help. Of course she couldn't just jump, she wants people to stop her. Is that so worthy of our condemnation? A bit of an attention whore, but most suicidal people are like that. It won't go away because someone ignores her. This is a genuine human feeling, not some troll on the internet.

For shame, have you ever interacted with someone who was genuinely suicidal? They're quite desperate for attention.

China? Bloody hell, I should have known. It's always China. While it obviously doesn't apply to ALL of them, the Chinese are notorious for being rude and heartless. Life under a communist regime which forces people to live like robots probably caused that.

Ugh, it reminds me of that incident when no one helped that little girl who got run over by a vehicle and then, another vehicle ran over her after that. To say 'lost faith in humanity' is an understatement.

As bad as those Chinese people are, they're nothing compared to the pond scum that is the mal userbase and its care for other life. Considering the ratio of people around here who also say depressing shit it shows a apparent focus on outward projection, self protection. Your E-penis won't fall off for just not pretending to joke about something once off, there's a difference between genuinely not caring and making a joke to look cool, its not the school yard (well ok some users are still in school so wel- shutup :I )
