There are so many series that look dull, uninteresting (etc.), but sometimes, you start to watch a bit of them and after the first few eps you actually start to like a series and end up really liking it. In my case there would be f.E. Macross Frontier ( I lost my interest into mecha anime before I watched it ) or Kimikiss Pure Rouge ( it seemed a bit dull during the beginning, but it got much better towards the end . What are your most surprisingly good anime ? ^_^

I came across Shinrei Tantei Yakumo, in the beginning I found it really boring but nearly the end I was totally hooked on it and the ending was amazing, definetely worth it.

There's no such thing as a painless lesson.
They just don't exist. Sacrifices are necessary.
You can't gain anything without losing something first.
Although if you can endure that pain and walk away from it,
you'll find that you now have a heart strong enough to overcome any obstacle.
Yeah, a heart made fullmetal.

School Days hands down. I really realized how terrible the taste of anime fans are most of the time afterwards, and stopped listening to others opinions too much.

Possibly Bakemonogatari or Princess Tutu because I usually dislike harems and magical girl shows.
I probably regret this post by now.

Girls und Panzer and Silver Spoon.

The first just sounded strange but proved to be a favourite of mine. The second seemed so dull and uninteresting (I mean an agricultural school? come on!!) but its mildly refreshing.

Spice&Wolf, I didn't like how it was a romance between a human being and someone's who's got wolf ears & a tail. But it suprisingly didn't even feel that weird because Holo seems very human anyway. And the story & setting is great. Even the economics I found interesting (because I haven't seen/read any story involving economics at all)

Dragon ball by far. I have always hated fighting/martial arts anime, especially with outdated animation, but it was truly batter than I ever imagined it would be. There were hardly and filler episodes despite its length, and I completely fell in love with the characters.

Actually, Gintama's first 13 episodes were quite good, I was expecting them to be more boring. I didn't find them that funny, but they were entertaining. Now I'm even more excited for the rest of the series

Gintama for me too. I didn't think it warranted being a long-running series from the first few episodes, but it is now among my favourites and has some of the best scenes in any anime I've seen.

I guess I could say Gintama too. I dropped it at the first episode because it seemed like an unfunny Ruroini Kenshin rip off. Fast forward I don't know how long, and when I was watching my weekly anime I saw that the final episode had aired. I thought "I like long anime(and long anime usually have something special that allows them to go that long) and since it's finished it would be easier to watch". So I decided to sit through the boring episodes to see if it got better, it did. And is now one of my favorite anime(probably top 20) and is easily in the top 10 of anime I love to rewatch, have done so 7 times, it never gets boring.

Golden Time
to be honest, it just sounded like a typical rich beautiful girl meets ordinary boy, but the character development is amazing, if it wasn't for the backstory on Banri, I would have dropped it.

Samurai Champloo... I think.

It even went way beyond my expectations.
Okay, maybe story-wise it wasn't solidly written, but it's definitely one entertaining anime to watch. Catchy OSTs + Cool Characters + Fun Adventure + Samurai = Awesomeness.

I thought Free! would just be some hot guys swimming and stuff whatever. Although when I watched it, it was better than I thought. I didn't expect it to give me so much feels, but it did. Plus their friendship and they became friends again and such was all just really nice.

Uta no Prince-sama, I'd call it a guilty pleasure, but I really enjoyed every episode.

The series I thought that will be 'meh' but later discovered to be damn awesome are definitely Bokurano, Tiger & Bunny and Kami Nomi zo Shiru Sekai. Bokurano occured to be really mature, T&B was simply a ton of fun to watch and KamiNomi is by far the best harem series I ever seen, mostly thanks to loveable protagonist.

Also I thought that I'd dislike SnK because the artstyle looked just... weird and awkward on screenshots, I wouldn't get the idea that people really love it if I hadn't watched it. Another pleasent surprise.

Um Macross Frontier is boring...if I watched that alone, I would have lost all hope for the mech genre.
Yoshii Kiria took over as leader of Fairytale and rebuilt it and became one of Tsukunes formidable enemies but let's save that story for another time

Hehe, let me introduce him to you again, kid. This is Shuzen Issa (who is MIA during the final battle), who will become your 'trainer' starting today. You still have much to go if you want to become the headmaster.

Like the two souls have started to become one.

Well I have two that I think are roughly on par:

Hanbun no Tsuki ga Noboru Sora, when I started it I thought it was going to be mediocre at best, middling production quality, interesting concept but nothing that jumped out at me, but it turned out amazing.

Maoyuu Maou Yuusha: I went in to it expecting another funny harem show with an op main character and moe cliches everywhere. I got that, but I also got... let me put it this way: it was the kind of show where an amazing 10 minute speech on what it means to be human was not out of place.

Because of all the doom calling here on this forum I've been brainwashed to think that there is no way, newly released anime can be good. So much crying about moe and sol, school settings and lazy writing have actually somehow lowered my expectations for new titles. So every time I come across something relatively unique or fun I'm simply flabbergasted. Outbreak company, servant x service, Love Lab. The list goes on and on.

For me, the one that surprised me the most was Mahou Shoujo Madoka★Magica.

I kept passing it by for a year after it aired because I figured it was just a normal cutesy magical-girl anime for 10 year old girls... I was pleasantly surprised to be wrong =D

and Gin no Saji.
"Children of Japan. And those who were once children. Listen! This is not a dream. This is not fiction. In reality, your superheroes were always fighting. To teach viewers courage and the meaning of justice! No matter how many enemies there are. No matter how strong evil is. Just remember. Does any another country have so many heroes? Has any another country been protected by multiple superheroes? Stand with me, friends! Remember when you used to watch your superheroes!
Once you may have given up this dream. But today, you can be a hero!"

Definitely sleeper anime of the winter season. might be able to deliver the amount of heart wrenching feels like White Album 2
Though it still has a high potential of tanking because there are so many characters now.

NouCome: The synopsis made it sound exactly like a crappy harem where the "plot" is one big pretext to include as many pervy scenes as humanly possible.

It ended up being both an extremely hilarious ecchi show and a smart parody of its genre. I absolutely loved it.

Girls und Panzer.

When I first read the premise of girls driving tanks I thought "oh lord, another show about cute girls doing a weird activity", but then it was actually a really good show. I still cannot convince other people that it's a good show (those who haven't watched it I mean), because they are exactly like I was before I started watching it.

Binbougami Ga!

Okay. so I was reading over its synopsis in the catalog it came out in, and found it boring. When it actually did come out, my brother just clicked on it on a whim, and then after watching the first ep, we were hooked.

I ended up liking it so much that I went and read the manga(which was great too) after the anime was over. Really wish we'd get a second season.
