To go against the post about nameless mob characters, they really made the episode for me. As they were thanking the Straw Hats and we got that montage of everyone getting their shadows back(plus that dialogue about Kaido being an emperor!) I was thinking to myself that I hope Lola and her crew come back in future arcs. Lola is a really strong lady and I seriously like her a lot and her crew represents dirty people who do good things and I find that charming. I was hoping we'd have them pay off their debt to the Straw Hats one day and then they said they'd never forget their debts and I was all :D. This was wonderful at least to me because I started to really care about Lola and appreciate her pirates and that's when Kuma appeared and was ordered to kill everyone.
The world government is so messed up. Just like with Ohara, to create their "justice" they are willing to slaughter innocents. It makes me so uncomfortable. And I know they are willing to do that and that the order was not a threat or a bluff, that Kuma is going to slaughter everyone there. Everyone... All the people who Oda just tricked me into expecting to come back into the show to save the day later.
The way Zoro walked up to fight him with no hesitation was so Zoro. He is Bushido as af! He walks into every battle, even ones that seem unwinnable or definite losses, with open arms accepting and seeking death. It's really manly... So when he walked up to the second warlord of the night already gasping for breath I knew we were in for something special...
This situation is just so messed up! Luffy is out and everyone is nearly dead and they were interrupted celebrating with another fight this time even more serious than the one with Moria... I don't think we've had a moment this intense since the Aokiji fight where he froze Luffy and Robin and had the chance to shatter Luffy into pieces, he had the ability to kill Luffy and if not to pay the debt of taking out Crocodile he would have. Here it feels even more hopeless... It's what makes Zoro approaching Kuma like this so freaking cool but also sad... He must know there is a 0.1% chance he could win.
Kuma was so freaking well done from the way he agreed to annihilate every witness and Straw Hat and then how he teleported into the crowd and then behind Zoro. Not only has he already been built up as incredibly scary with his contrast to Moria earlier but this was perfect, especially the shot of him warping behind Zoro. It reminded me of when Blueno used his door door fruit to get behind Sanji.
So how can this go? I see no way Zoro can win but hopefully he can at least do some damage in the state he's in. The only way I can see them getting out of this is if:
1. Someone comes in and saves them in some way. Someone like Ace who would show he survived the fight with Blackbeard and was just brought up by Kuma which to be fair doesn't sound too likely, or maybe someone like Garp who caught wind of what was going on from within the World Government. That said, I don't think either are too likely...
2. The Lola pirates pay their debts now and create a distraction and let the Straw Hats escape.
Either way I cannot see them taking down Kuma here and now....
To touch on two smaller scenes I loved, the Hogback and Absalom scene was great and I liked the worry over Luffy pushing himself. Hogback and Absalom showed they commited years here with Moria and it's not that easy to get up and move on, what else do they have? We could see with Perona that she could leave no strings attached, she was the newest phantom, but for the older phantoms it's not so easy. So I enjoyed seeing them ask each other what they were going to do now. At least they formed some kind of a bond here. :) As for the Luffy pushing himself, I loved the silent agreement among the Straw Hats that they will need to get strong enough as to allow Luffy to stop pushing himself to the point of suicide!
