This episode started off with some of the most asinine dialogue & situations I've seen from this show.

Up until this point, Wilhelm was steadfast & adamant about defeating the Theresia zombie/fake and never faltered.

Then Heinkel pops out & makes a tiny noise, he hesitates, then suddenly becomes a babbling train wreck! "No please! No don't! Please no! Please!" as Theresia walks up to Heinkel.

Ok, so he's worried she might kill him, makes sense. But then his son just stands there like a doofus (despite seeing his father fighting her) & asks "what did I do wrong?" as if this woman was his actual mother, just falls to the ground waiting to be killed, and has to be saved by Reinhard.

But that's not the dumbest part, though Heinkel's reaction was pretty dumb. It was when Wilhelm goes from pleading "no please don't!" to Theresia to pleading "no please don't!" to Reinhard!

Dude, you KNOW that's not actually your wife, and you were ADAMANT about stopping her, yet now that your son is almost killed & Reinhard helps save him, you start begging for him to spare her?! What?!

I hate when these shows do this cliche & have these characters start acting like the clone/reanimated person/shape-shifted person (which Re:Zero also has)/ etc. suddenly makes the main characters reluctant. Like if you're fighting an enemy who you KNOW can shapeshift, then see them shapeshift into your wife, would you suddenly say "whoopsie, I must not fight you now!" especially if that enemy is still trying to kill you?

NO! So why does Wilhelm go back & forth out of nowhere, especially now that Reinhard shows up & can actually put an end to this stupidity? I thought they were going to bypass this whole cliche & was really happy Wilhelm had some intelligence & a backbone, but then they reverted to the same dumb trope these shows always do in this situation.

But the whiplash from "please Theresia don't kill my son!" to "please don't kill Theresia" (using "kill" loosely since everyone KNOWS she's dead) pissed me off. Why did everyone but Reinhard have to suddenly start acting stupid at the last minute?

Theresia hasn't said a single word to you this entire fight, despite the fact that you've been running your mouth talking nonstop, yet you act like she's your actual living wife who can still think & act of her own free will. Begging her not to do something (which she ignored & tried to kill your son anyway) should've been the final sign that she's not listening, yet he STILL whines to Reinhard to spare her.

Ok, so what happens if he did spare her? She goes on to kill your son, while you lay on the ground begging a corpse not to do it? Then she walks over to you & finishes you off? How does that help anyone?

I know I'm ranting too long about this, but I HATE THIS TROPE! Characters losing all sense of intelligence in hopes of adding to the drama takes me out of a show.

Oh, and the fact that Wilhelm went nearly 30+ years without saying "I love you" once to his wife, and still acted flustered when she kissed him goodbye? Wtf kind of weirdo is that?
@THE_BigDingus when it comes to his wife Wilhelm ALWAYS acted irrational. He blamed his 5 year grandson old for her death traumatising Reinhard for life. He was pissed at the idea of Heinkel(who is much weaker than his parents/son) not wanting to die and asking his sword saint mother to go instead. He abandoned his family in pursuit of revenge and joined Crusch house. At the end of this episode he severs all ties with Reinhard even though he knows "you are right, I'm wrong", because he just can't accept him cutting down Theresia.

Amazing backstory weaved perfectly into the current moments. Astrea family is very interesting. Interested to see where Hienkels character goes. Character growth or continuing to humiliate himself.
@VilicityEV Heinkel would have been the main character in a story without Emilia and Subaru.

I'm not usually a fan of flashbacks but it really gave flavor to this episode. An emotional ride for the whole family. He finally said it, and I was tearing up.

Man heinkel amd wilhelm are both fucking annoying.

Couldnt they just die? Seriously hiw can anyone be that dumb?

As if any of what happened is reinhards fault... Even after so many years he is still going on with that? Dear god i have zero sympathy for heinkel and willhelm... I hope they are both out of the picture now..

Reinhard running around the battlefield saving everyone because he us 1 million times stronger than anyone is getting kinda annoying too btw. It feels like they could just remove anyone but Reinhard from the fight with the exact same result...

Anime of the decade, another peak episode. Cut content and still took up a whole episode, you could have a whole anime about the Astrea family.

Probably the weakest season, yet still so damn enjoyable. Lot of action, but I miss the despair part of this show. Still a cool fight and more characterization for Wilhelm.

This is it
This is what re-zero is all about
not the fights
but the Drama,
the dynamics and drama between the characters, the mysteries
This is what has been missing from this whole season
Therefore making this ep the best one

Apologies for incoming yapping,
I think the anime for most part was great but they did cut VERY important and exciting parts. Episode 4 and 8 was meh, 6 was bad. 10, 11 and 12 were terrible adaptations but not because episodes were bad. it's like drawing a perfect chair while you normally should draw a living room. And it's also same for this episode but after their butchering of Regulus, Subaru and Reinhard trio I stopped care about a good adaption and just watched for fun so I can't say I cared enough to be mad. And thanks to that I actually enjoyed.
However I think this episode would be the greatest episode of 2025 in all anime if they didn't cut the 2/3 of her backstory.

Also I think most of the anime onlies didn't get the part where Wilhelm cut his connections with Reinhard after refering him as Sword Saint-dono. This part made both Wilhelm and Reinhard more likeable in anime but made the moment less emotional.

For good parts I can say the unsheating of the sword and the parts didn't get cut from Theresa's backstory was absolute fire. I got really emotional with Wilhelm's parts. I also really like Heinkel's part but for some reason it felt a little incomplete.
So I can say this episode was 9/10.

Finally for people who are saying this is an anime and they can't add everything; Nope. Since it's anime we should expect to see getting cut of some internal monologues and conversations, and nearly all narrations. However, for plot and action sequences no they shouldn't cut unless cutting would be better for watchers.

So not even Wilhelm had a mature relationship with his wife.
This isn't even a Japan thing, because the series makes it clear how weird it is.

He fights the reanimated corpse and babble on about having to stop her, Heinkel arrives says a bit, Wilhelm loses all sense, Heinkel is about to be killed and Reinhard steps in.
"Noooooo please don't kill my wife."

Right.

But it's not her. Don't give me "but she looks like her". Jesus Christ.
The man has literally avenged her previously.
Nah he has to turn into a babbling fool and suddenly we mourn her again, a decade after her death.

Turns out Reinhard didn't even kill her initially.
The blessing just left her.
Nothing Reinhard could do about that.
Which isn't even a secret, everyone knows how the blessings functions.
Yet "he killed her".

Right.

They did it so well, they managed to capture what was so good about it in the light novel. The sadness of Wilhelm's character is done so well. There's something about him Tappei did that isn't in any of the other characters that is so beautiful. How tragic it is for him to lose his wife and have his family break up like that

Catching up to Re:Zero with fights back to back to back was certainly an amusement. From Emilia and Subaru beating up Regulus in quite the gruesome yet deserved way for that asshole to then having Garfiel being acknowledged by the 8 armed swordsman after a sequence of pure sakuga, we reach the Astrea backstory specifically from Theresia's point of view. She really didn't want to steal her brother's dream and paid the price regardless but alas when in came to confrontation Reinhard was there to settle the score and Wilheim to settle the words.

Heinkel is a scumbag.

Holy saint, the Dragon Sword's Aura is just built different. Shake the world without destroying it.

And as a LN reader, it was strange to see an old Theresia. All arts of her that I have laid my eyes upon, official or otherwise, have been of her in her younger days.

Finally, I dislike how they cut Theresia's backstory. These are the kind of episodes that deserve a full 30-min no OP/ED. They did this with Regulus too. I am not so confident about how they will handle Arc 6, considering how much care it needs in this aspect. For now though, I will keep my faith in WF. May they forever cook.

Wow this epsiode was perfect and catched my feelings of the first season of the episode "Wilhelm van Astrea" very well. I loved the backstory of Wilhelm and Theresia van Astrea and I think this week finished plot greatly. I think now some questions are answered and her story and ending was very tearful. It was sooo hard this episode to hold back the emotions. Really good work so far. :'D

Really nice episode, wasn't expecting to see Pandora again.

Yet it didn't show the part where Reinhard kills Theresia for the first time...

Theresia van Astrea, the previous Sword Saint, met her end during the Grand Expedition against the White Whale. At that time, her Divine Protection of the Sword Saint mysteriously transferred to her five-year-old grandson, Reinhard van Astrea. This sudden loss of her blessing left Theresia vulnerable, leading to her defeat and death at the hands of Pandora.

This tragic event deeply affected Theresia's husband, Wilhelm van Astrea, who harbored resentment toward Reinhard, blaming him for his grandmother's death. This strained their relationship, with Wilhelm viewing Reinhard's unintended acquisition of the Sword Saint's blessing as the cause of Theresia's demise.

i fin it funny that the these 2 minor villains somehow ended up giving a better fight than the previous 2 Sin Archbishops who were supposed to be main villains, these 2 zombies felt somewhat of a threat, i never thought they had even a small chance of winning their fights but they did manage to hurt the good guys to an extent, thats isnt abig achievement, its just the Sin Archbishops are somehow waaaaaaay below that, lets hope the next 2 bad guys do better

The van Astrea family has been pulled around by destiny and misfortune more times than one can count. The surviving family members being so emotionally distant because of this is a pretty glum outcome.

This grandmother zombie incident wasn't all bad, since Wilhelm van Astrea was able to get a bit of closure from Theresia.

I've picked up on that this is the second time Pandora's showed up just to tear a family apart. It's starting to look like her M.O.

Theresia’s backstory reminds me of Itachi in the idea that she doesn’t like conflict, but will fight if necessary. I’m surprised how quickly Reinhard ended the fight, showing that he is indeed the current Sword Saint.

Wilhelm has never been one to express his emotions verbally, but Theresia understood that about him and that’s why they share such a bond. I would hate to be in her position and have to watch her brothers die all for her uncle to keep telling her to pick up her sword, knowing that she doesn’t like conflict, which is why Wilhelm took on the burden.

However, the White Whale was too much of a threat, but since Reinhard was gonna be born, she lost her protection.

It’s clear that Reinhard will do whatever it takes to uphold his ideals, and I can respect that. Itachi did the same thing by slaughtering the Uchiha Clan (with help from Obito of course).

We’ll see what goes down next.

What’s with this season bringing in so many backstories—and all these emotional moments that just clench the heart?

Theresia’s words—“How surprised would you have been if you knew that from the very first moment I met you, it was love at first sight.”—yeah, that hit hard. Probably the biggest tearjerker of the season so far. 🥲

Wilhelm and Theresia always make me tear up. The whole family is just so tragic.

This episode, while it didn't move the actual plot forward much at all, genuinely had me in tears at several points during it. I'm still not sure I understand why Reinhard was accused of killing Theresia BEFORE this fight, but I'm sure it'll click for me while i'm doing something mundane lol

It was a family matter in this episode, and it was also a sad episode from their family's perspective. Reinhard was able to defeat Theresia very easily, but her story was very touching and beautiful. It was a nice and a sad one. But, I'm happy they were able to express their love one last time.

There's something poetic I find about Reinhard being the one that finally put Theresia's to rest, something his father and grandfather that seemingly ridicule him majority of his life couldn't and failed to do.

I expected a lot of flashback this episode but not from Theresia perspective, I thought we'd be seeing Wilhelm's memories and monologue about his regrets in life but I liked Theresia's as well. The idea of the most innocent descendent of the Astrea family being forced to become a walking weapon of Armageddon was heart-breaking, could only imagine what Theresia had to go through watching all her brothers and father die trying to protect her innocence.
My respect for Wilhelm has definitely grown, he took up a mantle to protect Theresia's happiness and did a damn good job at it. All i hope for now that he and Reinhard can make up for lost time and be able to act like a family.

God the author has done such a great job at making Heinkel the perfect piece of shit, even after Reinhard him and put Theresia's to rest he still has the audacity to ridicule and curse him to high heaven.
I honestly don't know if i should be more impressed at how determined he is at hating Reinhard even in the face of death, or how broken of a father and human he has to be to do so. Now I'm really curious to know just what type of events led up to him being such a deadbeat dad, I'm guessing Theresia's circumstances that led to her death is a big factor but even still i cannot fathom hating your son who has still managed to rack up God knows how many accomplishments without his help, but knowing him that'll probably piss him off more.
