what’s the incentive to watch anime outside of the current season lineup? Like, sure, there are classics and hidden gems from the past, but if nobody is actively talking about them anymore, isn’t half the fun of watching anime kind of gone?

Because they look interesting and I enjoy them. I'd rather start a conversation about past anime with other like-minded people than talk to normies about whatever's currently airing. The fun of watching anime is... actually watching anime.

Counter point; why would I watch something just because everyone is talking about it? I don't really care about what's currently popular, I care about what I want to watch.

You know how many mediocre endings I avoided because I didn't jump onboard with a show people were hyping? Granted those were shows like Lost and Game of Thrones and not anime, but still.

Also the last time I watched something, not because I trusted my gut, but because it was popular/relevant, was Frieren and I was bored shitless for 13 episodes straight before I gave up.

Because usually the point is to see something that interests us or catches our attention, and since anime is quite extensive, there are good things in every year, so whether it can be talked or not about is secondary.

Because a good anime will have people talking about it long afterwards and a dedicated fandom, even if old shows don't get much attention on generalized sites like this. Also, a show having ended means that if a show goes to shit later in the season, you can steer clear of it and do something better with your time.

Anime is for personal entertainment first and foremost. Getting to discuss a specific anime with others comes afterwards, and in the forums, it's not hard to come by someone who is willing to discuss them. Even if it's just one person, it's fine. Also, most of the older anime I watch are still popular enough to be talked about.

If you have friends who want to stray away from seasonals for a while and stick with other topics and/or recommendations, it's a lot more fun than you think. It's hard to talk with the majority, especially those who mostly stick with today's anime (or even manga), but if you have your buddies to talk about other things, and if you want a more interesting topic, go for it. Even if you couldn't engage in MAL/AL forums that much, that's what having platforms like Discord, Instagram, and/or Reddit is there for anyway.

At this point I pretty much only watch non-seasonal anime, I love going back and finding out about some hidden gems I missed from the past. I do agree that of course they don't get as much attention as the new stuff, but that doesn't mean they should be dismissed either.

What's the point of watching nonseasonal when no one talks about it?

You're watching anime for your own entertainment in the first place, so why would you care about it? Imagine looking up a nonseasonal show you want to watch and one of the criteria before you start watching it is if there are enough people you can talk about it with. You don't have to talk about/discuss every single show you're watching, especially the obscure ones. You really can find some real gems if you're watching nonseasonal shows.

This doesn't make any sense. Seasonals are mostly trash by the way. With the exception of very few, seasonals are just garbage. I prefer watching older anime, as long as I enjoy them. That's all that matters. Talking to people about it or not, that doesn't really matter. And you can always revive an interest in an anime or manga. You just gotta be the only one talking about it, if nothing else. Also, I'm p sure you're trolling with this question. Imagine not watching SNK anymore because it has ended or something. Boggles the mind, really.

You can always make some threads to talk about them if you want to, that's the point of having a forum you know.

And also because most seasonal now are trash, I rather spend more time watching old stuff even if they're less talked about.

Sometimes i watch an anime just because i want to talk about it. But most of the time i don't care about what other people thinks about it and just want to enjoy it.

Talking about things you like is not the only way to enjoy it. I

The point for me is to watch what appears to be interesting to me. If no one else has seen it and I get just one person to engage with it then that’s a bonus. I also get to avoid spoilers when I finally get around to watching any given show or at the very least I may have forgotten about said spoiler.

Huh.... are you saying if you have so little time that you have to prioritise watching The Current Thing because otherwise you would miss out on the Discourse and you would suffer without it? Can you not persuade someone else to watch something good and talk to them about it even if it is not The Current Thing?

I mean I think I can just about understand what you're saying, but the lack of like personal desire is odd to me... Like have the confidence to appreciate art even if it's by yourself.

Because watching them feels entertaining, as simple as that. Even though it should be a standard, a normal and universal behavior, some people choose to watch anime the different way. Their decision, their entertainment, but when you think about it for a second... Chasing trends no matter whether you find them actually enjoyable, FOMO, peer pressure watching... Yuck. Definitely not a healthy way of consuming any type of media.

I don't watch anime to talk about it with other people. I watch anime to entertain myself. What's the point of watching something that doesn't fit my mood, and consequently, I won't enjoy, just to talk about it with people I don't even know online?
I understand that some people enjoy the talk, but is it really worth stressing out about your watching routine because of that?
And what would be of older anime if new anime fans only watched the most recent ones?

I'm not much of a seasonal watcher yet I've found a lot of people who still talk about non-seasonals. But the main reason is because I want to lmao. Good or interesting things are still good or interesting even when the fandom quiets down. I will make fanart of a forgotten anime I love, and shunt it into the void. Sometimes, to my pleasant surprise, the void answers back.

Counterpoint: Finding some deplorably messed up anime from years ago that nobody I know has seen, dropping it in the group chat like "hey check this out lol" and waking up the next morning to a few hundred angry messages.

But no, really, the main point is entertainment. It's great to talk about things sometimes, but it's not imperative to my enjoyment of anime. It can be both a social and solitary hobby depending on my mood. Also,

Interacting with the anime community in 2025 is super overrated, especially when my interest don't match with majority of the popular opinions.

Most of the enjoyment I get nowadays is actually from enjoying the process of watching anime itself, and occasionally finding people who know about pre-2020 anime and have some fun reminiscing about it. It's especially cool when I watch a video for a 10+ year old anime, and the comments are less than 1 year old, it lets me know that there are people out there who still think about these series from time to time like I do. It's like, most people might have forgotten about this particular series, but there are still dozens of us out here who remember it.

First - 90% of anime is trash and ongoings is usually trash too.

Second - comments on mal often dont get responded and even if i comment on every episode, there is no real communication, just an opinions.

Third - i watch what i like and i dont care what other people think, and also i dont have a need to discuss the anime i have watched with someone.
Just writing an opinion is enough for me, although im not against discussing it, its just not necessary for me

The fun of watching anime is welp.. watching anime for me. For years I didn't discuss any of the series that I watched [seasonal or not] with anyone, except some surface level information. Of course sharing my thoughts and feelings is a lot of fun [and hearing others opinions], but it was never a part of the experience for me.
