great episode as always, the direction and symbolism is especially great
also people seems to not get an idea about shizuka true nature and even calling it out of character when it's not

firstly, it's the theme of the series that those childern copy bad stuff from thier parents:
Marina is abusive and hysterical just like her mother
Azuma is judgmental and insecure just like her mother
Shizuka is manipulative and cold just like her mother

secondly, while to some extend it's marina fault she goes this far, the root of her manipulative behaviour is her mother, the things he does to azuma is something she probably learn when her mother is having goog time with her clients (including marina dad's) she knows how to please a man and there is no other way to explain it other than she saw her mother do it

finally, marina gone won't solve her problem at all, even if marina didn't exist in the first place, the core problem is already rooted in shizuka and her family, shizuka is distant, she's so detached to reality, just like with azuma it should be obvious that shizuka keep pushing away people who wanted to help and she doesn't care, if any of you were bullied, make sure to talk to atleast one person, it's hard, but it's not like the world is only filled with bad people, even if it won't solve the bullying entierly having someone to talk is always better, especially when they're kid like this, and for those adults with childern, please take care of your child, be good parents, and try to avoid showing bad habit even if it seems insignificant like swearing because your child WILL copy you

I think it's a bit far-fetched to say she got her manipulative tactics from her mom. It's totally possible, but I don't think Shizuka and her mom have had enough on-screen interactions to justify this, nor is her mom home often enough for her to learn this. If anything, I think the show just hasn't gotten around to explaining her manipulative side yet.

No inicio, ao meu ver, Shizuka manipulava Azuma com uma certa inocência a ponto de nem perceber o que fazia, mas agora isso virou costume

A psicopatia dela aumentou com os abusos e negligencia do ambiente

I don't think shizuka is a manipulator. I'm sure shizuka doesn't think juvenile prison is bad. Shizuka doesn't want to go to juvenile prison just because she can't see Chappy. I feel very sad and can't take anyone's side in this anime.

That's what you get for not digging a deep enough hole in the ground. They are dug deeper in a different kind of hole.

Azuma's mom learned such terrible parenting methods. I understand she was trying to motivate him but she did three things she was doing wrong. Placing pressure on him to take on the clinic she runs in the future because whatever reason when that should be his decision in future not closing off his options and also how she used more of a negative reinforcement technique though this seems it wasn't likely originally intended as that seeing what his brother said how she would prepare it beforehand because she is busy working but she did seem to turn it into that by rubbing his nose in it. Third mistake is expecting only perfection, and for what reason even the stuff he is doing in school has literally nothing to do with running a clinic or being a doctor. Plus after that where she basically expressed a sort of sentiment of abandoning him. She's not even remotely a good parent. At least with Maria's parents it was a build up of issues and Shizuka's mom is trying to make a living and is just young and naive but where is the start of his mom acting this way? Though I guess it could be seen as endless since everyone has some reason for the way they are.

I don't quite get how Shizuka became manipulative and selfish. It isn't really shown if she was like this before she was bullied or only after Marina died. I have some idea what would be going on with her psychologically though. I don't see her as a villain just a damaged and naive girl.

At least Azuma has Junya for a brother to cares about him.

Mama Azuma is TRASH. Probably the 2nd anime character I've wanted to repeatedly punch in the face for being such a constant B for no reason (Yuki Suou in Roshidere being the 1st character).

When she mentioned that the patient would die if you're not perfect, I can understand where she's coming from, but that's unnecessary pressure to an absolute beginner, a KID, who is barely getting the ropes of life. And yet he's still the shining student to everyone else other than you.

And I can understand why Shizuka is so hellbent on going to Tokyo even if she is absolutely scummy at the moment, being a POS manipulator. She has had so much misery and suffering, so deprived of basic happiness, that she is chasing that at all costs, because such a temporary reprieve is so rare for her: a scarcity mindset. But Shizuka's being trash too. But it's understandable given her history.

Shizuka can't be saved anymore! Naoki finally opened his heart to Junya with a lot of emotion; I expect he is going to tell the police that Shizuka is the real murderer in this story! (yeah, I know the true murderer is Takopi but technically it's just a flower for the other)

This episode was outstanding on so many fronts-- development, direction, and animation.

It's interesting now that we can see the roles beginning to reverse within the cast. For example, Marina was previously in power over Shizuka, but now Shizuka is controlling Akuma.
This show does a really nice job of displaying ways to tackle our struggles. Instead of conforming to one's situation, as with Shizuka, Akuma voices out his struggles and asks for help from his brother, leading to a satisfying ending for him. Well, unlike Shizuka, the fix of eliminating Marina is merely a temporary one, which will probably unfold into worse consequences for her.
Saw others mentioning how Takopi really lacks good development and I agree. In this episode, we see Takopi trying to discourage Shizuka rather than feed into her actions. You would've thought that development would have occurred when Takopi experienced that beating by Marina in a previous episode, yet it happened when they were called out for being a fake Marina in the last episode. I dunno, I think that development would have made more sense earlier. It made that scene about Takopi being traumatized insignificant in the broader story.
Overall, can't wait to see how this anime continues to develop

loved the visual metaphor of Junya breaking Shizuka "evil" control over Azuma in reminiscent of a very flashy charged final attack made of love.

I like how despite everyone shitting on takopii (both here and the anime), his solution of telling the truth was probable the best and wisest option, for the poor Azuma at least who was dragged into this hell.
"but nobody would believe him the weird pink octopus alien story" people in fact can, remember that the police confiscated two technology advanced/magic gadgets and he knows how the memory box works, who does seemingly impossible things out of this planet like changing size and preserving all kinds matter in stasis.

in other note, I think i'm losing iq points watching how people are treating the Marina and Shizuka situation like a it's a fighting shonen or something, taking absolute sides. this isn't black and white at all.
for my own sanity sake I'll believe that people are just baiting.

Shizuka became manipulative and selfish because she's always been alone. She's only ever had a dog looking out for her, and she doesn't trust people. Azuma might be the first human to ever try and help her, and her brain is so cooked from all the abuse that she just looks at him as a tool she can use. Everyone in this show needs some damn therapy.

And yeah, it's not a black and white situation. The only person who's "right" unfortunately is the one who decides to break the cycle and not become their parents.

Each episode of this show feels like its driving a hole deeper into my heart, characters that I thought I would end up loathing keep making me feel absolutely awful.

Shizuka is slowly creeping onto my loathing list especially with the way she acted this episode.

The animation is still absolutely stellar which is a nice change of pace from how some shows have gone.

the episode is good the artstyle and direction is better than previous. the episode itself is mediocre the story is contrived and the adults this anime are bad and stupid. they just justifying it as some good narrative and conflict. the scene about the brothers is nice, but felt rushed because of how it potrayed the siblings and its cliche plot. And Shizuka is starting to annoying and Takoppi is useless for now

That was a truly special episode.

On last episode's discussion thread, I said that Azuma likes Shizuka because she is willing to talk to him unconditionally. I stand corrected: Azuma likes Shizuka because she is the only person who expects something from him. Junya, on the other hand, is the only person who truly loves Azuma unconditionally.

The scene where Junya finally talks to Azuma was incredible in terms of the pure intensity of the emotions conveyed. The people behind this show made so many creative decisions, every one of which paid off. The strengths of anime as a medium were brought out to the fullest for elevating the scene's emotional impact. Seeing Azuma's worries and struggles being visually swept away by Junya's involvement, with Junya sparkling with colorful light as opposed to the artificial golden glow of the pancakes and every other source of approval in Azuma's life... It was then when the twisted sense of anxiety that pervades the episode and culminated in Azuma's imagination of Junya were released in an absolutely cathartic experience. This is how source materials should be adapted.

I speculated last episode that Shizuka's manipulative personality stems from a need for control. Now that Shizuka finally has some power over what happens to her, she will do anything to avoid losing this new life, and she will feel no remorse. With that said, it seems like she doesn't understand the gravity of her situation; she knows that Azuma turned informant, yet she's not concerned at all. To her, the world consists of herself, Chappy, things that can get her to Chappy, and things that will keep her from Chappy.

The story is going in an interesting direction, in terms of ideas. Previously, although the characters were mainly powerless, they could more or less understand the situation. Now, with the adult world becoming involved due to the murder, the main characters are facing issues they can't even comprehend.

It is really difficult to read why she is like this. There can be so many reasons ranging from emulating her mother manipulating men for more money to tale care of them, to Shizuka having a mental breakdown over Marina telling her Chappy is dead, and it could also be about a need for having control in her life after being controlled by her bullies. It could even be all of these that because her psychological wellbeing hinges on her dog she desperately needs to feel in control of the situation.

Narratively most of the episode is mediocre, the ending pays off, but it is not because that ending is good that salvages most of it.

Also, it is clear the author is making a correlation between Shizuka and her mother where both use the opposite gender to get what they want. As for her being manipulative, I also agree with those that said this, she has the ultimate goal of seeing Chappy again so nothing will stop her from that, so if she is willing to shift the blame of Marina-chan on Naoki, that is manipulative, what I am not so sure is if she is behaving like this out of malice.

Maybe it's because I haven't read the manga, but this episode was absolutely stellar for me. I felt everything they wanted me to feel. The visuals were incredible too. 10/10 episode, best one so far for me. I'm glad Azuma got a somewhat happy ending. Big Bro is MVP. Azuma's mom really sucks but I can totally see something similar to their relationship happening irl. I wonder what's going to happen to Shizuka and Takopii now...

@traed ooorr it could be that she is just a completly destroyed human being. Which is absolutly no wonder. She is like 10 or something and basicaly lives alone without anyone giving a Shit.
She got abused like crazy by Marina and whoever. She probably saw her mother fucking whoever.

That can be part of it too. I wasn't giving a full list. I suspect her mom could care about her but just doesnt know how to show it other than bringing in money to support her and herself. Also I doubt Shizuka saw that. Assuming if the subs are correct her mom isn't a prostitute she is an escort that seems to works at a club. Escorts are different from prostitutes even though they sometimes have sex with clients. Escorts are hired dates there to entertain. It seems unlikely she would have taken any client home which a prostitute would not do either because it risks being robbed or stalked. She would have likely went to a love hotel if she did sleep with clients, though I don't know if those exist much outside of Tokyo.

This episode is so tense, there isn't a good family in this anime, it's so annoying, thank goodness his brother is a really good person, because if it weren't for my God, I would be even angrier

He just knew about it after all this time. His brother is really good at comforting him. Let's see how it's going for the girl...

Four episodes in an it does really make you think "Do we actually need to perform tests for those who are wanting to become parents?" Like there are definitively people that should NOT be parents and this anime is proof of it.

Sure, everyone makes mistakes, that's just part of being human. But the things some of these parents do here, go way beyond that. If these kids had been raised in healthier environments, things wouldn’t be spiraling the way they are. It really shows how much damage adults can do when they bring kids into the world without being remotely ready for the responsibility.

Now I will this anime is pretty freaking good. I didn't expect an anime of this caliber would be also in this stellar of a season!
