Bro what??? This is so dumb. Monica basically said she’s one of the Seven Sages, and then Casey follows up with this???

I mean, I heard that the anime has been reducing her character a lot compared to the LN, but wtf kind of horrible direction is this?
@IzanaSolos Monica was whispering from Casey's pov and Monica was smurfing the whole time it was hard for Casey to put two and two together

It's disappointing how we had a genuinely excellent episode last week, only to jump straight into an episode of abysmal writing and awful direction this time.

Casey's betrayal holds zero weight because of the pacing and because of the laughable direction: it's revealed in about as casual a fashion as a certain big reveal in Attack on Titan, except there the casual nature of the reveal served a purpose. Here, it's just incompetence because the direction is so lacking and the pacing nullifies any emotion that character beats involving anyone but Monica could have.

And then we have Monica's unnecessarily convoluted and indirect method of solving the problem of the week, when within the rules the show has laid out so far there are countless more obvious methods.

This show could have been good, but unfortunately the direction and pacing constantly hold it back: how did the director of Konosuba and Priconne fuck up so badly with this show?

this started good and getting worse by each episode! so Casey saved Monica from horse for what then? nothing makes sense and there's no coherent story! things happen, then more stuff happen in their continuation but it never addresses the past events.
Casey cut the ropes for alibi that breaks in 10sec then they walk to the school; then Monica figured her plan; then Casey confessed her crime; then Monica made a plan and cast a spell; then they go to the middle of school; then Monica cast another spell to get rid of trap; then Monica modified the spell; the Monica activated the modified spell; after all these, then Casey's bomb went off!
I mean, come on. I thought F&F was some BS. THIS is just beyond ridiculous!!!!!
@-You_Too- I think Casey is the type of person who helps others as long as it’s within her ability. The whole ‘hating Monica since they first met’ thing is obviously just a lie to distract Monica and change the topic. Also, Nero only noticed the bomb and reported it to Monica right before it was about to explode, so that close call was expected.

Mhh, can someone explain to me why Casey hid Monica's tea during the tea party? I mean it is obvious that she does not really hate Monica so I don't really understand why she did that.

@shxtter I feel like it took Casey a bit to figer out what she was talking about. She not as knowable of the silent witch as Claudia. What I not sure about is why Casey messed with her tea.
@PoisonedTea Casey also just disliked Monica. It was bullying, the tea thing.

The anime didn’t execute it well, but Monica and Casey should have been still outside & not inside a building (the LN/manga I believe shows this). It also didn’t go off only after 5-6 hrs. Like where did it even say that? They were basically running immediately to the garden. Monica had to know where Louis’s barrier is to rewrite it.

Also, Prince Felix wasn’t checking wood pallets lol Cyril literally told Monica that Felix is overseeing FIREWORKS. If the Spiralflame burst, it would have been a bigger explosion, that’s why Monica had to do a compression code so the combustion would be isolated and make this internal attack be suppressed by Louis’s barrier.

Everyone saying “Monica is OP” so there’s no tension & this is the anime’s fault in not showing it properly but if you completely analyzed this Episode 8, you’ll realize that Monica ACTUALLY USED LOUIS’S BARRIER. Because BARRIERS ARE NOT MONICA’S EXPERTISE. She had to use Louis’s barrier knowing that he is a great barrier mage.

She didn’t know where the barrier he set up was & that’s why she had to attack the school to know where it is & change the barrier’s code to internal attack because the barrier was only meant for external attacks.

Also, Monica is not OP because her mana capacity isn’t endless. This episode, Nero even pointedly commented how she lost her mana after all the things she had to do. This isn’t the 1st time she lost mana. She lost it in episode 4 too.

Overall, this episode could be better if the series has more eps to work on, but it’s not the worst I’ve seen from LN/manga adaptations. It did well in some aspects.

it's fair for you to like it but for me it just doesn't make sense. everything that's happening don't make sense! the couple got expelled and no continuation despite the fact obviously the teacher put a spell on them! then Monica got the job while the ex-treasurer wasn't at fault.
I would've loved it if Monica was the villainess because she surely is acting on it; like she literally putting herself in positions of harm to attract attention then when addressed, she just act dum and stupid and wants her mama to take her home!
This has been my least favorite and the biggest let down. I rather watch rent a girlfriend twice than standing this but now I just want to know how deep they want to drag this! is she going to marry the prince? what's going on? how old was she when she kill those dragons? she's been through magic academy twice already and she's still 16!? I thought wandering witch was bad, this is terrible!

excuse me? right before it exploded? when they left the shed it was day, when the bomb exploded it was dark night; that's at least couple of hours.
Cutting the rope was the dumbest thing she did; they could've literally finished counting, leave together and go have dinner and play some chess with no suspicions!
The only reason cutting the rope would make sense is that Monica knew the plot and knew the location of the barrier and had already deactivated its defense; then immediately after rope cutting, the cat catch Casey, Monica saves the bomb with barrier then and only after that, they show how she figured everything out and the rest of it and Casey's confession!
as it was shown, it's dumb and stupid like it has been since Episode 1.

@Scootboi The bomb works by absorbing mana. If uses any normal spell, it makes the bomb blow up sooner. Its firepower is also much stronger than any barrier she could make, so if she doesn't block it perfectly, the warehouse of fireworks blows up. She's also too socially unconfident to tell people to convince people to leave the warehouse in time.

I hope they made Monica explain her reasoning to Louis in the next episode, because when I read this part of the LN, it was so awesome. So I'm SMH at the people who thought this was a bad episode. When Casey's motivation was brought to light, it hints at the larger geopolitickal world that Monica is dealing with.

Somehow, I can't blame them too much if some of the elaborate world building as well as the explanation of the Spiralflame in the LN is omitted, and these "#*#* blame bad writing.

ETA: Let me add that the mind control thing in Episode 4 is connected in the bigger picture because it is
in the kingdom they're in but
which should have been mentioned in Episode 8. That's why Monica
people to do what she wants in the first place.

To get on her good sides and make monica rely on her. She wants to get some intel on the student council. And as you've seen early on, cyril had a slip of tongue and told monica and her friends about the preparations for cultural festival. That's where casey slips in and conceal her intention as helping the prep.

@-You_Too-

The more you speak, it’s clear to me you can’t even follow the story well. You seem to be only complaining without even comprehending a lot. You can literally calculate the time w/ the lighting + dialogues given. Cyril literally came after lunch, talked about needing her help. You think it took hours before it exploded, but it didn’t. What took some time was her checking the lumber etc.

Monica’s trauma has literally been spelled out for you throughout the episodes so she’s not simply acting dumb and stupid. She just has no clue about socializing because she has social anxiety. Otherwise, she has to pretend to not know because DUH she’s undercover.

Just because the couple were manipulated last time, it doesn’t mean they didn’t do anything without their volition. They schemed by themselves and just got influenced by the teacher to not reveal who he was.

You can definitely watch other anime if you don’t like it from ep 1. Why would you suffer up to ep 8 TT Even hate-watching sounds like torture lol

Your questions are literally answered in the dialogues, and this story/anime isn’t a romance even if there’s ships in it. This is more about Monica’s growth as well as the plot involving Prince Felix.

@Atavistic

They rushed things in the anime. Actually, the 4 of them ate a lot more times in the cafeteria after Monica recovered. Monica was scared of crowds/people so Casey was present many times to help her. In the LN, there were more interactions and it was clearer how vital Casey was as a part of Monica’s group of friends, esp w/ the incendiary Claudia and irascible Lana; Casey was the mediator. It’s sad to see the emotional tension a bit meh because of how Casey’s role as Monica’s friend wasn’t too emphasized.

Honestly, Monica’s solution to the issue wasn’t bad, but it just wasn’t well-executed in the anime compared to the LN. They didn’t explain remote magecraft for example in ep 5, w/c was a parallel of what she did in ep 8. Spiralflame wasn’t also described properly and why it exploding would have been bigger damage (a reminder that Felix is nearby fireworks would’ve been sufficient for understanding and revealing that Spiralflame has its mechanisms). We’ll see on the next episode I guess.

I think the anime also should have introduced the 7 Sages even briefly, but who knows if they’ll adapt this up to 2nd season ig.

Wtf is going on with betrayals and assassination plotting in this show?

There was that 1 girl who was mind-controlled to drop flower pot on prince (speaking of which, what happened to her?! Monica figured out who did the brainwashing so shouldn't she have done something to bring her back?).

Now it's Casey who wants him dead too.

Maybe the prince is the problem lol?

We also have dumb bitch who almost got Monica killed during tea party + 2 of her subordinates.

That makes 1+3+1 students who tried to kill someone or were culprits, thus got jailed (maybe?) or kicked out of the academy. Casey may even be executed. I mean, trying to kill the prince is already guaranteed death penalty, but dozens of students there would've also died.

Didn't expect to be this pissed to be honest. I liked Casey... Still feel sorry for her. Having lost 3 brothers and now she'll die too, unless Monica comes up with some CRAZY forgiveness plan.

Holy macaroni, Monica showing herself as the OP character really contrasts with her shy personality, while disabling Casey's trap. The politics around the show are getting a little entangled, but that aside, I expect to see some Monica's character development knowing that, someone who she believed was her friend, betrayed her.

Monica's tea party again with her friends...or more like a dinner party, while discussing about the upcoming school festival, plans are underway altogether in all places...though for Claudia, teasing her brother always comes first and foremost. Monica working with Cyril, though Casey comes in due to a dispute with the clubs to help them both out, though a near-intentional accident has the latter completely shocked with the former helping her...to finally reveal her true intentions that she's her enemy.

From the very beginning since the tea party, it has always been Casey on the hidden act of trying to assassinate Felix on the process of becoming king, though him being Duke Clockford's puppet is every part of the story, true to the T. But attempting to stop her and the Spiralflame from activating its explosion to the demise of the future king, Monica attempts the near impossible to break Louis's barrier that's laden with deadly traps, though with how it's setup, it could only be yet another Witch of Thorns who did this, and Monica must put all of her unchanted magic to the test to overwrite the skill in limited time.

Of course, that necessitates Louis and Ryn's arrival to be notified of the barrier's overwriting, though it's not a surprise considering it's Monica who did the job.

Casey, man oh man, what a fall from grace...

That Casey girl had literally zero reason to do what she did or was about to do with Monica. Plus the fact that she's sooo stupid as well just doesn't help her case.

I just hope she gets reported. Also, Monica herself referred, not once, but TWICE that she's the silent witch, but I suspect that girl would again put on a pikachu face if she saw Monica doing even the bare minimum of magical stuff.
