@clixc 9/10. Got a great rewatch value. Gonna miss this.

@mshfqtny You must watch the remaining episodes.
@aurora_yuuki this is the only anime i wouldn't rewatch because of how dark it is
10/10 nonetheless. I'm the type of person who has to watch cute cat videos after watching something dark and depressing to cool my mind lol

Well, the anime ended exactly the same as the manga, which is a shame because out of all the parts in the manga the anime built up on, this was the one that most required it. I said it in a previous post, I do really like the ending. I think the themes of the ending is really powerful and has been building up since the first episode. My main issue is that the execution is not as good as others in the story. The resolution of Shizuka and Marina's conflict needed additional time to be eased into which is why I was praying that this episode would be a longer one like the first episode to accommodate that. Alas, we got the same thing in the anime.

Thankfully, the rest of the episode was simply breathtaking. It actually made me cry at a few points of the episode even though I had already read the manga. I think, other than the execution of the ending, the anime did everything perfectly this episode. Well, everything except one. Why would they choose that peppy song over Takopi's final words at the end there? The scene was supposed to be a bittersweet, somber moment where Takopi tells the viewers he cannot do anything for us but hopes we can still persevere through. I legit teared up during that part in the manga. Nothing here though cause the song choice evaporated any sad emotions from the scene. If they were gong to play the ED song for the credits, why couldn't they just play the full song and start from the Takopi speech? They still just played the chorus for the credits, they could have synced it so we get the somber part of the song for the final scenes before getting the chorus for the credits!

Well, other than that nitpick, loved everything else the anime introduced to the episode over the manga. This was a great time and I hope other anime dealing with such topics get such good adaptations in the future.

I think the ending works. Takopi knew they had the Happy Powers all along. Also, Takopi didn’t describe exactly what the Happy Powers were capable of doing apart from fixing the camera.

I believe the Happy Powers are like a wish, as implied by the shooting stars when the end credits roll. Although, it might be a bit of a stretch to say they’re connected. Maybe the studio wanted there to be a pretty night sky. I’m more inclined to agree with the latter tbh, but it’s a nice thought.

The point is, Takopi didn’t describe the Happy Powers in full. If they were capable of granting a wish, why wouldn’t Takopi use it earlier on, you may ask? Well, Takopi isn’t entirely naive. They may understand the concept of death, just not suicide or killing. Because of this knowledge, Takopi realizes that sacrifice (death) is only a last resort. Since Takopi is attached to Shizuka, and they realize that Shizuka isn’t truly happy at the end, they believe they have no other choice. That is when Takopi makes the wish.

Toward the end, Takopi realizes that all three of the characters are alone. Shizuka, at the beginning of the episode asks herself what she truly wanted. What she truly wanted was someone by her side (e.g; Chappy). Takopi being a cutesy, innocent alien may be able to help, but they cannot resolve the issues Marina, Shizuka, and Azuma have all by themself. Takopi takes it upon themself to grant a wish to rewind time and give them the company they need.

That is why only certain memories come back. And yes, it is deus ex machina. I don’t think the author had this all in mind from the start. Yet, it still works. There was no definition given to the Happy Powers unlike the previous gadgets. It is magic. It’s the magic that Shizuka couldn’t believe in. And Takopi would use it to make them all happy.

Another thing. Someone else described this anime as only existing to shock people. I don’t disagree that it is designed to shock people. I disagree that it’s the only purpose. If the anime had ended tragically, I wouldn’t disagree with that statement at all. Yet, the ending exists for a reason. The author made it end happily and gave it that ending for a reason. That reason? To tell people they’re not alone, to seek out help.

Maybe there isn’t anything Shizuka could’ve done like Shizuka said. Then it’s up to us to help others and be kind to others. Marina stopping to notice the Tapoki drawing was what gave us the happy ending. The bully had to stop and realize what they were doing was wrong. Was it because Marina would’ve originally chose to? No, of course not. It was because Tapoki had reminded her to. It wasn’t her choice, she never would’ve stopped bullying Shizuka. But in a better world (that we can make happen), we can stop to think like Tapoki and choose to be kind instead of bullies. We can end cycles of hatred. Yadadadada all that preachy stuff. Despite its “preachiness,” it’s still important.
@Tortesh I think your post is one of the really good ones here
thank you for it

Great adaptation overall. My only gripe I could see with it was the OST feeling a little out of place at points, but everything else was excellent.

My favorite scene was when Shizuka was hitting Takopi with that brick. That voice actor deserves a raise holy.

I know this ending has its fair share of detractors, but personally I like it for the most part. Yeah, it's yet another time reset, but also I find the way they bond through their shared experiences with Takopi to be really heartwarming. Also the fact I don't completely despise Marina by the end was saying something after how unlikeable she was at the start.

Overall, very good. 9/10

Takopii no Genzai is a deceptively innocent story that quickly unravels into something deeply haunting. It masterfully contrasts a cute art style with heavy, real-world themes like guilt, pain, and the fragility of childhood. Every chapter feels like a punch to the heart, leaving an impact far greater than its short length suggests. A truly unforgettable experience.

Are there still some of you who blame Shizuka or Marin after watching the first six episodes?
If so, perhaps we’ve missed the core message of Takopi no Genzai.

Shizuka and Marin are not antagonists. They’re not villains, but wounded children—victims of a system that failed to protect them.
They represent the harsh realities that children can face: bullying at school, neglect from parents, deep emotional pressure, and even domestic violence.

At the root of it all is often the selfishness of parents who prioritize their own needs over their children's well-being. Yet, this is the complexity of human nature—no one is entirely good or entirely evil.

Takopi, despite arriving with good intentions and advanced technology, does not truly understand the intricacies of human emotion. And through his mistakes, we learn that good intentions alone are not enough. Real help requires deep empathy and genuine understanding.

What an incredible ending.
Only six episodes, yet the story and the lessons it delivers surpass even those anime with hundreds or thousands of episodes.

Watching it truly pulled me into the narrative. I felt angry, sad, and frustrated—because what happens in the story reflects issues that often occur in real life.

Thank you to the writer and creator of Takopi no Genzai, Taizan 5, and to the animation studio Enishiya for adapting it so beautifully.
You’ve worked hard to create a masterpiece filled with such deep meaning.

This finale broke me.. I knew it was gonna be special from the start... Takopi really broke me and I want to know what happened to him...
I wish I could talk to Takopi. I have been through a little bit of bullying myself so I started thinking about Takopi and it made me happier for some reason.

10/10, A very realistic but not so realistic anime I could say.

Trash Ending. Why do Shizuka and Marina randomly remember Takopi in the new timeline? Why did the author think it was a good idea to have the deux ex machina camera return? Seriously, there are so many things that they could have expanded on if they wanted to give this series a better ending. The best part of the episode is when Shizuka is venting to Takopi and he apologizes for not being smart enough to understand the reality of the world. Everything after that squanders all of that for no reason. Takopi brings out the camera to change everything after it was already broken because the series decides to magically invent a new power because he got his memory back last episode. Then when we do the time travel shenanigans again and then Shizuka is beaten to an inch of her life by Marina and suddenly Marina just stops???? Then they become besties? I'd like to emphasize that the last two sentences are questions that will never be answered because it is NOT EXPLAINED. There is literally no explanation, it just happens!
@Dred_Sins 100%, the ending is very forced and out of the ass. The final time trick and sacrifice of Takopi is contrived af, really a deus ex machina. Then the author breaks the wall and addresses his audience from 2016 wtf why is this date even mentioned in the adaptation from 2025? Clearly they wanted a happy bittersweet ending no matter what, but the result was very awkward and inorganic, not lining with the previous episodes.

I really hoped for a darker and more surreal ending when maybe there are hints of Azuma sucide or Shizuka assaulting her stepsisters, but we don't know for sure since all is blurred and mixed with dreamy sequences of a more happy ending.

I'm very disappointed because this show was an anime of they year contender up to this point and a potential 10/10 but they blew it almost as badly as Erased or Great Pretender

@TehManiac they didn’t forget about all their problems at all, and just because the first five were extreme doesn’t mean it can’t have a happy ending, the whole point of this show, it’s themes and messages, get across regardless of the ending being happy or tragic, and most people wanted to see a happy ending where things kinda work out, it was rushed and the weakest episode but it was still the right idea
@Rogersss Yes I didn’t have a problem with the idea of a happy ending. I was hoping for one too. But as you said, it was very rushed which in result made the previous episodes less impactful

At least Azuma showed some actual development. Meanwhile, Takopii hasn’t changed a bit, still clinging to this version of Shizuka that barely even feels like Shizuka anymore.

But ofc, since it’s the final episode and we have to force a happy ending, we somehow manage to change the mind of a literal murderer in under three minutes, because that totally makes sense. And then we reset the timeline, effectively making everything that happened completely pointless. What a joke. Oh, and somehow Marina and Shizuka magically remember Takopii after all that, just conveniently enough to give us a feel-good bonding moment at the end.

God, the show was already awful, but this ending honestly rivals disasters like Darling in the FranXX, truly. And the similarities are hard to ignore, both are carried almost entirely by their animation, with everything else falling apart. That said, I’m still genuinely curious to see where the studio goes from here. ENISHIYA is easily one of the most interesting new companies to emerge this decade. What an incredible anime, easily 2025's AOTY for me. The last time I felt such an emotional impact was Clannad: After Story, but this series made me care about the characters so much in just 6 episodes. After all the suffering these kids went through, I'm glad the ending wasn't pure depression.

Although it's still bittersweet with Shizuka and Marina's home situation not improving, at least they came to understand each other. Azuma too seems to be making friends in a healthy manner instead of being co-dependent. They're not alone anymore and that's very important.

You could even say that Takopi died for their sins to bring them hope...

Ah, the show that I've been holding off all month, just so I can binge it in peace today! As someone who's very much into this kind of stories, I kind of predicted the key events in the first two episodes, but that had no negative impact on my experience whatsoever. I liked the study of each characters' traumas and family problems and how exploring them revealed why they behaved that way. The resolution? Well, probably the only weak point of the show, they could've made it more impactful and more creative over this somewhat rushy and happy deus ex.

Decent watch nevertheless. 8/10.

@Ronninn He brainwashed the kids by adding some memories to them. They remained the horrible people they were but when Marina went to abuse Shizuka she saw the octopus symbol and remembered she hated him even more than Shizuka. Marina and Shizuka bonded over their shared hatred, much like the pack of bullies bonded with Marina earlier in the show to abuse Shizuka. So all of Marina's past physical and emotional abuse was forgotten and everyone decided this was a happy ending or something and their homelife which everyone claimed caused all of this suddenly wasn't a problem or something and wasn't actually causing it or a problem at all.

First of all, I apologize, because in the episode 5 discussion forum, I mistakenly thought that Shizuka killed Takopi.
But I'm curious—what actually happened after Shizuka was about to hit Takopi with a rock on that Tokyo city street?
Why did Takopi suddenly end up under the concrete structure—the same place where he first met Shizuka and Marin?

Also, was the news about the two missing girls in Tokyo caused by Shizuka?
But the two girls were found safe in the end, right?
@Denkenisme
Denkenisme said:

Manga explained this a bit better. When Shizuka hits Takopi with a stone, Takopi loses consciousness. Shizuka then takes Takopi's gadgets and leaves. Takopi gets his memories back, remembers he went back in time to kill Shizuka, but since Shizuka is no longer around, he flies all the way from Tokyo to where it all began and finds Azuma.

Denkenisme said:

Yes. In manga newspaper articles were translated fully. Apparently Shizuka used tool to turn herself into an adult (maybe dad) and took away girls while (I don't remember if both parents were present) parent(s) were distracted for a few minutes (while they were in a park). It is then said that the girls went missing for several months (half a year if I recall correctly), but at the end they were found alive. In anime it says "girls found safe", in manga it says "girls found in fragile state". One thing is clear, Shizuka didn't/couldn't kill the girls, nor did she cut their stomachs, but still she kept them somewhere for months!!! As we saw, Shizuka can barely take care of herself, so it's clear the girls were likely always hungry, thirsty, dirty and probably physically abused whenever Shizuka did the investigation. Whatever the case, ultimately and gladly none of that matters. After all, once Takopi used time-camera for the last time, girls are safe and most importantly won't have to experience 6 months of torment under Shizuka!

Of course the ending is kinda bullshit, but I can't lie, I love that it's a happy ending.

I do think it makes sense within the whole theme of the show. Takopi sacrificed themselves to rewind one last time (to use the camera) and, at least to me, it makes sense that all of the times rewinding and messing with the timeline have left their marks in ways the people living within the timeline itself can't quite understand. That, and I guess sacrifice holds some value in this universe... it might also be somewhat related to Takopi's species, but who knows!

anyway, yeah... rated it a solid 8! It's not *perfect* but it's definately good

A fantastic start at first, but it quickly loses it's good points and relies strongly on horrible parents abusing kids.
the show did take a detour in really dark territory, but the end was more positive than I would have expected.

I wish they had used more episodes to create a positive turn, instead of the time travel "nonsense".
the scene in the previous episode honestly looked like she killed Takopi with a stone,
but apparently she hit him to knock him out.

Marina went from pen stabbing to befriending so fast XD

best part of the show was the beautiful and appealing art style.

Oh man, I didn't think there would be a happy ending, but I can't lie, I'm crying because I'm so happy they could work it out somehow.

And is this the same ending that the manga had or something different?

it's the same ending.
@Masshiroi

Thank you. I can see why people aren't too happy with an ending like that, but I still take it.

I’ve been enjoying the anime more than the manga for a while, but in the end this finale still doesn’t work for me. I do think that what it’s going for on the thematic level, that pain & trauma are often inescapable but having a support system or just people to relate to about that pain in general makes life a bit easier, is a very worthwhile one. And on a broad conceptual level, a better timeline born from Takopi actually learning what real empathy looks like is also an at least appropriate ending to the story. However, the execution leaves much to be desired.
A lot of the problem comes down to how the ending, both on a narrative and thematic level, doesn’t actually feel earned IMO. The resolution basically hinging on Takopi’s ghost whispering in people’s brains to be nicer feels much less emergent from Takopi’s own growth than the guy’s growth, and the rather quick presentation & pacing of it when combined with that fact just kinda feel like a regression into the same shallow, unnuanced feel-good world view that the show started out by criticizing.

The lack of thematic resolution also highlights narrative issues that I wouldn’t care for otherwise, like how the Time Machine being suddenly restorable is an asspull, not to mention how it undoes a lot of the stakes for everyone except Takopi, and the explanation for it, Takopi’s amnesia being undone, was itself a case of twist-itis-fueled narrative clutter.

A lot of that just kinda compounds into the end product as a whole feeling very insincere to me. There’s a lot I like here, from the base concept to the themes to the visual flourish to the sense of black comedy, but a lot of it just doesn’t cohere into a story capable of utilizing those elements to the fullest. I do get why other people like it and call it a masterpiece, but for me the story just doesn’t really work

takopi got his memories back in ep5 after Shizuka hit him with a stone and left it on the street.
but the rest is just magic, I guess. 😁
