I thought the cult leader had some hidden motive for creating the sect, but it turns out he actually believed in the AI. This episode was pretty weird, but I hope this time we’ll finally get some information about Skinner from the AI’s memory but I'm not sure though since it was made using his brain’s neural network from 15 years ago.

"Hey, this cult is lead by a thing who probably wants to kill everyone that follows it"

"They haven't given the special smoke signal, let's not get even slightly closer to investigate after we see a giant pillar of smoke"

What?

This show is just like cowboy bebop, with no emotional moments, and it came out in 2025 so it doesn't even get nostalgia points… I hope that follows through and at least the last few episodes are spectacular…

This chapter hit me a bit, I had a friend in high school about 10 years ago or more, She was in a pretty sectarian religion and watching this episode, a lot of what she went through makes me feel a little sad. Indeed I said I had since I don't keep in touch with her currently, her brain was so washed that she was afraid of having a boyfriend, since she had one and her parents... well... weren't very good with her For years I tried to get him to leave there, but his fear was greater. That sect pressured him to do a service, so to speak, to their church, and he returned... marrying someone he barely knew... and his reaction was simply: "you are not my friend if you don't approve of the marriage" my reaction was wtf, I just told her not to get married now, to be his girlfriend first and get to know him, that that sect coerced them into doing it, But I guess 20 years of abuse or brainwashing are not removed with 4 or 5 years of intervention, This chapter showed each and every one of the consequences of what religious fanaticism does to people, it is quite well done, my congratulations to the chef XD

I wish the anime gave more depth to the characters, who are still pretty flat overall. But at least in this episode a bit of Eleina's story has been told. It's not much, but when you stop to think about it, her life was pretty tragic: born into an isolated cult, without her own mother's affection, blindly following the orders of an AI. What pushed her to break free and become a hacker?

“A god is not a god unless he can freely play with human lives” - seriously, didn't those who analyzed Skinner as a model for a neural network realize that the guy was a psychopath?

It was a bizarre but entertaining episode. Now they have a new lead to track down Skinner, let's hope it doesn't end up being another dead end like the previous ones.

Another Elaina-focused episode? Ok. The last one had her screwing up so Ig this one's supposed to show her in a more positive light...

This episode felt pretty rushed. If this were any other anime, I feel like they'd spend at least 2 or 3 episodes focusing on the cult. It'd be an entire arc instead of a single standalone episode. Because of that, this episode felt too fast-paced and boring. Elaina and Leland, and their relationship with Hanna, went by too fast. And we basically learned nothing about the cult and its leaders, let alone Skinner. So, this just ended up feeling more like a filler episode despite it focusing on the backstory of one of the main characters. How did Elaina escape the cult? Did she learn hacking before or after she was in the cult? What happened to her mother? Who was her father? Was it the leader or someone else? It's so undercooked. It seemed like the cult was harmless, so the writers had to throw in human sacrifice in a last-ditch effort to make them evil. So the followers didn't feel like anything. Were they good? Were they bad? We'll never know.

Their "god" Naga was also barely in the episode. It felt pretty pointless. The concept of an AI "god" was cool, but it was barely even executed. I do think that people are dumb enough to worship AI tho. With the recent AI boom it's only a matter of time before this kind of cult manifests itself. But I don't think this anime deserves any credit for predicting it since it didn't really bother doing anything interesting with the concept.

What's going on? Did this series peak at episode 4?

I know we're on a 30-day deadline, but these storylines need time to breathe and build tension. This just felt rushed. Episodic is fine for stuff like the nightclub job, but this one needed more space.

Also I guess this kills my head-canon that Eleina is an autistic trans girl

If I saw this at the same age as when Cowboy Bebop was first aired on Toonami, when I first saw Cowboy Bebop, I would have loved this series. But I don't know how this series can pick itself up from here. The only target audience this could possibly be for at this point is a young 12 to 13 year old teen. Even now I can go back and watch Cowboy Bebop as an adult and get something out of it, but this is so shallow it hurts.

I don't know that I will drop this series, but the last good anime series we had was Frieren: Beyond Journey's End. Hell even JJK season 2 was leagues ahead of this. Really thought this would compete but it hasn't. Oh well, onto One Punch Man Season 3 I suppose.

Of course Eleina is from the cult, because for plot purpose I suppose

Not much backstory was given, so we know she was from there, how was she allow to leave and how she became a top 3 hacker still a mystery and what was the purpose of the cult? Somehow FBI wasn't doing anything until Lazarus investigave, what a coincident

Still no sign of Skinner, and at this point, he could be dead or he could be anywhere, maybe the AI memory can provide some answers? I don't really know

A pretty topical episode considering the rise in AI usage in the real world and its detrimental effects on society as a whole. The sub was god awful and made me not want to watch the episode but for some reason the captions on the dub (as well as the dub localization as well) were good so I had one window playing japanese audio and another window muted with the dub and its captions. Ironically it felt like the translation was done completely by AI with no attempt at localization just straight raw translation. I hope the next episode fixes the issue

Had to torrent this episode due to the atrocious quality-level subtitling I noticed pretty much immediately within the first few lines and minutes. Glad I just stopped it early and didn't try to tolerate and bear through. Whatever that was, it must be the same half-baked translator or translator program or tool they use to create English translators for some Chinese anime/donghua which are equally poor in syntax and word choice. Some sentences are closer to gibberish which, even if a reasonably well-read person who has had enough interactions and experiences with foreigners with an incomplete grasp of English and shaky translations can infer the general meaning of from context, actually just substitute similar-sounding and/or looking (spelling-wise) words that don't fit what they're trying to say. That and leaving out entire words to make grammatical messes. Just obviously at a totally unacceptable standard to be released as a final product to the public.

Nothing to do with the original creators themselves or this particular episode, but just amazing this kind of con artist fraudulent translation still passes under the radar in this day and age to be released regularly enough. Wish I could say it was something virtually unprecedented to see and super uncommon. Axel would be proud of the slick BSing skills involved. Hope no one pays for that product as that would be the definition of being conned. At least as a media pirate one doesn't really stand to lose anything other than minor time and energy looking for an alternative source for the episode.

Also, actually on-topic to the episode for a moment, the burning ritualistic pyre with daughter's life about to be extinguished only to be met with smiling embrace of fanatical indoctrinated mother perfectly fine with seeing her burned alive really gave me Selyse Baratheon flashbacks (before her maternal instincts of biological programming overwhelmed her religiosity in a snap judgment moment).

An episode on Redditville.

OK, being serious now: I can accept Elaina being a genius hackers if she had contact with technology since her childhood, but it was the complete opposite: No only she would have had to learn computers from zero, she would have to do so on top on having to learn how to live in a society.

As for issues in the series, I could really imagine Filmento saying something on the like "Instead of having our protagonists be random people, make it so they were picked BECAUSE they have something that can lead us to Skinner. For instance, make Elaina be picked rather than any other hacker BECAUSE she had connections to the cult.", because in a well-written story, 90% of what they learned over the episodes should've already be known by episode one.

Also, am I insane for thinking that this episode serves as a better analogy for being queer than the representation we got in episode three? (One of my biggest gripes, which I've written in my review, is how this show sucks at social commentary, usually just limiting itself to saying "Societal problems... exist" rather than exploring their origin, nature, how it functions, how it's affected by material conditions, how it would be different in the future, etc. No, it just says they exist... then does absolutely nothing with that fact).
The whole episode we get to see Elaina with an ever present feeling of discomfort of having to pretend to be someone else to get acceptance from her family.
@thewiru Yeah I see what you mean man, but I mean we don't know for sure if they don't have a connection to Skinner (probably not though, I'd assume all the characters were picked to join Lazarus because of their abilities. Only Doug knows people with connections with skinner (as far as I'm aware)).

Honestly, I never even caught on to any of the social commentary XD
Going back on my notes for episode 3, I haven't written down anything pertaining to queerness, maybe I missed something.

So Eleina was born into a cult that worships an AI as their god, no wonder she is so good at hacking.

Umm, I missed the part how this episode suggests how Eleina became a good hacker. Anime simply doesn't give any info on that. Are they training kids with computers at early age? We simply don't know!

Most people we saw don't even use tech at all and phones were confiscated and are seen as tools of misinformation. Maintenance crew does have access to some tech but the majority seem to be simple brainwashed workers and farmers!

I mentioned Lucy from Cyberpunk above. If they showed Eleina trained as a kid or something, it'd make sense, but now it makes more sense to believe she learned hacking after running away, but that makes the plot no less dumb.
@Sigmar-Unberogen It makes complete sense to say that she learned how to hack after she escaped from the Tower of Truth. I mean she knew nothing of the world outside her little cult-village, and her people worshipped an AI. It only made sense that she would want to learn more about the internet, electronics, and AI.

Elaina grew up in a cult! Crazy! And the cult started with scientists! Even crazier. It's nice to see an episode with less focus on Parkour / Backflips, and more on the human angle. Still extremely sad that their search is not going well.

For some reason I though the Cult might not have eaten Hapna so shouldn't the have been happy for the Meek to inherit the earth? But instead because their Dragon AI has Skinner's personality it's all Waco Jonestown mass suicide. Crazy Religious Cults are full of people who are total nutcases.

Seems the FBI is involved. Why can't there be inter-agency co-operation? Wouldn't that be more beneficial or am I asking the wrong question? Feels like they're just getting in each other's way instead of sharing information and maybe finding Skinner faster.

Visions of what could’ve been a good series, jazzy soundtrack and sleuthing. Instead, 1d characters, half baked plots. She became a computer genius in her teens after living in a commune? Did Watanabe direct this over zoom?

It’s gotta be mistranslation.

I start to feel it could’ve been something, but the plot is generic enough that it never rises.

Dunno, to me that still sounds too stupid. A runaway girl who was likely forbidden from ever accessing any tech before (like most cultists) somehow becomes god level hacker on her own in a forbidden world?
Without more info (dunno if the story will bother on her backstory anymore) she's an average Mary Sue character now, like infamous Rey from Star Wars. Probably hacked FBI on the second day after touching PC or something.

Ok, so do we know how old Eleina is exactly? As things stand it might turn out that she is a the daughter of Skinner (She doesn't know who her father is, and, as we were told, Skinner visited that community 15 years ago. These clues are like Chekov's gun in this story.).

If some of yall hate this show so much, why still watch it? Or atleast just wait until the show ends and then you can knock out the whole show in context? And so many of the complaints are complaints that could be leveled at Cowboy Bebop or Samurai Champloo also, but if you hated the character studies with episodic plots then, why even watch this show?

Not to say this show is perfect, and while I am really enjoying it, I’d still put Cowboy bebop and samurai Champloo above it.

They really dropped the whole Kool-Aid incident lore in this episode lol
@DrkSeid69 This episode looks like a mix of Kool-Aid, Waco and Midsommar. I have a feeling that thanks to this film, people around the world have developed rather specific ideas about the religious traditions of Sweden.

@Marinate1016 This episode actually borrows quite a bit from 70s science fiction, when it was popular to depict high-tech dystopias where people brainwashed themselves in an attempt to escape a terrible reality. I even remember a very similar movie, but I forgot the name.

UPD. I remember it, its "Logan's Run".

@WatchTillTandava I wanted to recall how often Japanese horrors turned to the image of various sexual or sadistic provincial religious cults, but this is probably a general trend for depicting provincial religious communities in general. Remember the French Crimson Rivers and Brotherhood of the Wolf. Perhaps this is a kind of Freudian fear of city dwellers before the old and not always understandable rural mentality.

Yeah, it's getting harder and harder for me to justify watching this series weekly, this is just not what I was expecting. The animation somehow keeps getting sloppier, the episode nature is boring since it seems like we might not get to see Skinner until the very end and the backstories from these characters lack depth or the impact to make them more interesting. Even the hacking part felt slapped on using a bunch of number blocks.

I don't know, I'm beginning to lose all hope for this project.

I totally could see a cult like this forming today or in just a few years. So many people already worship the pseudo AI we already have as being more valuable than people and do not even bother questioning it's answers to questions.

At least Hanna came to her senses enough to help Leeland and Eleina.

It would've been great if they didn't have the AI talk to Axel at the end. I admired the restraint of them not actually communicating with Naga all episode long, only for its burnt-out husk to yap at the end. I like what the episode was setting up - an AI built on Skinner inevitably tries to play god and its definition of godhood is having others at its mercy. We can pick up information and come to our own conclusions; no need to spoonfeed us.

I'll just headcanon it as Axel having an overactive imagination.

I find it funny, and a little sad, how many people want them to "progress the plot" right away. It's an episodic show - every episode is a window into some aspect of this world. We're learning about the setting, about our heroes, about Skinner, about the themes the show is interested in... I like that about it, and remember a time when people knew how to appreciate episodic storytelling.

These days, if One Thousand and One Nights first got published, people would be like, "What do you mean, Scheherazade gets to live another night?! How many more times must we go through this?! Just merc her already!"

There's probably enough naysayers now that anyone who also has something negative to say about this series will get accused of being a hater, but I want to start with the caveat that I went into "Lazarus" with the openness to like it. Admittedly, I didn't expect that it would be good, but I didn't expect that it would leave this much to be desired. This episode is the worst one so far. I found it comical how poor the pacing and handling of the subject matter was. It feels pointless to spend too much time harping on it, so I'll conclude the way the episode did with that last scene of Eleina smiling after sleeping next to Christine, because she appreciates her company - or at least that's what I assume. The entire scene is so hollow because their relationship is not fleshed out at all beforehand and I barely learned enough about Eleina and her trauma from growing up in the cult to feel much of anything, let alone the peace she shows in that final moment.

Not the dangers of AI nor the dangers of religion/organized religion. The point is that humanity is naturally inclined to worship. It's just a matter of what people choose to worship. Obscure God from culture, and you are left with pale imitations, or things that don't even resemble him. I reckon the point of the show's title is that Watanabe wants to resurrect anime and/or comment that it takes a global crisis of this sort to bring humanity together, and thus you can ideally use that opportunity to rebuild values from the remains.

Man, who designed those cell bars? I could easily spot two or three divisions that were large enough for Eleina and Leland to escape.

Why does Doug think that being part of Lazarus means they are professionals of some sort? They are a bunch of randoms! And Leland's sole skill is being able to fly a Drone ffs.

Pretty lame and generic cult-based episode. How did Eleina manage to become a Top 3 hacker if she lived practically all her life away from tech devices? We will most likely never know.
