Is being unable to participate in culture wars a blessing in disguise?

I like arguing in the internet, it's fun.
I'm not able to join internet culture wars for two reasons, though:

  1. Most of them are about things I have no contact with or don't care, such as Disney stuff and AAA games.
  2. Every stance and thing from one side never seems to be made "as a thing for people to like", but as something "to own the other side".

I commented in other threads of mine on how the "western-centrism" of such discussions leave no place for me to mention the Japanese stuff I consume, which technically offers a "third alternative", since it's never made "in opposition" to anything.

For instance, quite recently I discovered that westerners think of "sexualization of male characters for a female public" is a hypothetical, and not something that actually exists. Worse: I discovered that many of them think that sexualization of female characters is made to offend women (And not because people actually like it), therefore many of them think that their hypothetical sexualization of men SHOULD be something that offends men, otherwise it wouldn't be equivalent.

When looked through this angle, I don't really think I can add anything. Like, there's no way for me to talk about stuff such as yaoi, shoujo or otome games, which are examples of male sexualization for a female public that no guy is offended by. This whole thing is just two sides full of resentful people flinging feces at one another, there's no place for "love" here, and I just noticed that now. No side wants a solution, they just want to kill the other side.

Are there alternative ways to discuss stuff on the internet outside of culture wars?

Well if we are talking about internet cultures like you say in the OP then stay the fuck away from most of it.

Not even just culture war stuff but I am extending it to fandoms and their internal squabbling. It doesn't help that the primary fandom I interact with is probably the worst one ever. Even in my own sub sphere where we get along I do see odd bits of contempt once any outsider interacts. Yes the hellaverse fandom has sub communities that are vaguely factionalized by ships and thus, by drawing VoxVal and StaticDust art I am now aligned with a specific subgroup which so happens to be filled with some of the most fascinating basket cases I have born witness to myself and coming to the tragic realization I am the same as these weirdos and I must carry that burden forever.

Basically if what I said sounds completely brain-rotted and a humungous waste of time then do no, under any circumstances, leave the peanut gallery and wander into the shitshow itself which probably extends to all other types of internet drama I dunno the "woke" debate got old a long time ago and I just fuck with whatever I want to do.

I like discussing stuff with people on the internet, and would like to find places where I could find something new to discuss everyday.
Though preferably stuff that isn't culture war stuff.

You are participating in culture wars if you stop buying products you disagree with and encourage others to do the same.
But to really participate in it, you need to have a widespread influence, able to change actions of tens of thousands of people with your words.
One person's financial boycott does nothing, just like 1 guy's vote for a president does nothing.

And you should be able to answer it yourself if you feel it's a blessing you don't participate in culture wars.

Lesbians and bisexuals exist. Also suggestive prompts for self insert and arousal wouldn't be unusual. You cant have sexual moments between characters without showing the character as having a sexuality.

For people to go back to minding their own business and focusing more on just having discussions of the things they like. That used to be more normal to see.

I'm surprised that you say it's still Western-centric, since anime has by and large entered the mainstream.

Oh, that was a typo, I meant "sexualization of MALE characters for a female public"

@Kwanthemaster
Anime has not entered the mainstream.
SOME anime have entered the mainstream.

If what you're watching isn't one of those, you're still treated like a leper.

I've seen OP around enough to know this is bullshit btw lol. We literally discussed a culture war adjacent topic together recently, which he is referencing in the post.

What you perhaps want to say is you do not participate in them in a way that is conventional, like firmly in one side. Which is fine, just say that.

@thewiru Well then you are out of luck, anything that's not political is automatically politicized because not being political is political in and of itself.
That's kind of how the whole issue started, people calling entertainment prioritizing being entertaining a bad thing...

Where would you join these "culture wars" you're so graciously avoiding to join?
Would you have to inlist at the internet-warrior-recruit center? xD

Enough already with the self-worship.

What you like is beeing involved. That's all, really.

When will they start making "Culture War Veteran" hats and when will fast food restaurants start offering discounts to people who called others the n-word on forums and imageboards? You're welcome for my service.

Are you talking about the "accidental progressivism" one? Because that's the only one I'm referencing here, and I don't really consider it "culture-war related".

But I WANT TO participate in them firmly on a side, MY SIDE.
The problem is that apparently there's just no room for it.

I generally avoid culture war stuff because I am just tired of the drama. Sure, I didn't like woke stuff infiltrating every aspect of media, but I think the anti-woke are just beating a dead horse at this point.

If you have to opportunity to just not engage with culture war shit you are very lucky to be honest. As a trans person I kinda feel forced to engage with it as a lot of this culture war nonsense contains elements of sexism and anti-lgbtq+ rhetoric tend to be sprinkled in, and its almost impossible to avoid as the most extreme and inflammatory rhetoric is in almost every fandom I participate in due to social media boosting whatever gets the most engagement. Even if one tries to debate a lot of the loud extreme people while providing sources and evidence, they just get more hostile while deflecting the blame onto you so its honestly a circular loop in pretty much any discussion.

Nuanced discussion has been killed by culture war nonsense and its honestly just tiring
This post is brought to you by your local transfem gamer goblin. Will not tolerate bigotry and will fight against "anti-woke" sentiment to make the anime community a safer place.

I don't really care, but sadly the way culture difference trying to invade another one make me enter this zone either to defend or just check if what i like already invaded or not.
currently i just play mostly zone that not invaded yet but at the same time keep watching this news either because hoping this end or am i need to move to another again.
Currently the situation looks better though, especially after visa blunder moves that trigger even the government and create ripple effect like how japanese sites starting to block overseas to enter (sadly country that don't have anything to do with this also became sacrificed).

It's not that "I don't have the opportunity to engage", it's just that it seems there's no place for me or my points of view there.
Though, granted, since Facebook's algorithm incentivizes bubbles, my profile and feed there are pretty chill and there's almost never any drama.
Twitter and YouTube are where I end up learning about stuff.

I know for a fact that "anti-woke" people exist because I saw YouTube videos about them, but there's not a single one of them on my Facebook circles for me to talk to, try to understand (Or even convince). Not because "I've been trying to avoid them", it just... happened.
Something similar happens on Twitter, every single example of "anti-wokism" is just some blue-checkmark trying to engagement farm.

Perhaps we're at a point of polarization where it's all "beyond talking", let's take transphobia as an example: The vast majority of places are either trans-inclusive in their rules or explicitly hitlerite. I simply don't find "just some guys with questions" anymore, nor people "That are good in every aspect, except that one", as if everyone that could be convinced, already has been.
Perhaps what I'm looking for is an "agora with normal people and 'opinion checks-and-balances'".
There simply isn't a situation where I can explain to someone that "No, John Money didn't 'invent trangenderism', at the time of his studies the US had already had the second SRS procedure in it's history" because everyone I meet is either already OK with trans people or is "RetvrnGroyper88" which will likely not be convinced by arguments.

Getting trapped in the culture wars waged by unequivocally ugly fuckers with innumerable mental disabilities is no way to live.

For as many woke shitter artists there are, there isn't a single anti-woke artist.
