I gave this an 8/10 because I liked it overall. The killing of the aliens or 'invaders' really troubled me (indicating it was well done). However, I wish they spent one or two more episodes after the mother ship nuked itself. Luckily, I saw the other post where someone recommended watching episode 0 before the finale and since I hadn't watched it before, I wasn't too confused. But the disappearance of Kadode and Oran in the main timeline and the implication that they were in the mechs (and thereby were killed) was done poorly. Throughout the show there was little indication that these girls could pilot the mechs. At least in the alternate timeline that the father was sent to they should have shown that these girls were in some job where they were piloting these mechas or something showing similar. Not bad but still rushed.

@yhagni what's the usa side of the ending? tell me
@Sworld30 Yeah I too want to know if USA got f**ked by the pink orbs. Wouldn't be a good ending if USA comes out stronger.

Episode 0 set up the wrong expectation that we were going to have a post apocalyptical arc. After the explosion, the manga presented Kadode’s dad’s past then seamlessly transitioned to the future, and there’s a few more chapters about the war against the USA. I would be less let down by episode 17 if episode 0 was a regular weekly release.

Also, I’m incredibly disappointed that they cut the Donald Trump Padron scene where he reveals Melania Trump was an Invader all along who helped him win presidency.

@Alkimia That's due to the timelines and how they work. It's complex but I consider basically what I wanted form Bioshock Infinite if you have played that game before.

I am not too upset at this as they made clear there are different timelines.
@MasterHavik Oh no yeah I get that it's a different timeline and all, I'm just sad they didn't end up being together in this timeline like in the last one

Eh, this ending was underwhelming as hell for me. :/

I was ready to rate this show a 9, or even a 10, but I'll have to bump it down to an 8 for that. :c

@HellindiuM yes... The added scene showing they died either ruins one of the best things in the ending in the manga or just a cheap misslead

This was a nice episode overall and had a nice ending, not good enough to make me go crazy but good enough to enjoy it, it was a bit weird how this suddenly turned into a mecha anime though, at least the animation was nice when the robots were fighting.

While the ending was nice it was a bit fucked up too, so apparently that other worldline is fucked, and when they enter the time machine thingie, their consciousness or whatever travels to the past, but what about the present? what happens to the person who enters the time machine? will they disappear or do they keep living in the present in their fucked up worldline?

Overall, it's a nice anime and it was quite an enjoyable experience, not the best thing ever but definitely not the worst, I didn't like a couple of things but it didn't detract from my enjoyment, this is quality stuff and the animation was superb, even that short action scene with the robots fighting was nice, it's not like it got ruined with shitty animation or anything, the animation was pretty good in this anime the whole time so this anime gets some points because of it, I praise consistency when it comes to animation and this anime didn't disappoint on that part. I will end my comment and give this anime a rating of:

Ok scratch what I just said in episode 16 discussion, screw happy endings, I can't believe they are just going to another paralell world, I'm so mad at those, I almost said "like on this anime" forgetting that it was a meta spoiler. At least remaking the world in this ending didn't make character uglier but good looking.

Ok scratch what I just said, Big Bro is alive, this is the best ending ever. "If I get fat, what will be the end of the world" LOL. I don't get it though, when the dad was back the manga was already different...does that mean the memories influenced him to change the past and therefore the manga since he's the editor, and then he remembered the original manga's name some time after? Or did someone else change the past, so weird. So in one world Kadode dies, in the other one the world ends, so the answer was for Kadode's father to give her attention, moral of the story maybe.

I think I read that this was going to be anime orignal ending, I said I would read the manga but now I'm definitely reading it, give me the depressed shit! Also I just noticed it but, I love how they encapsuled the "ugly designs done in a beautiful artstyle" so well, you watch this and think the mangaka doesn't know how to draw but he makes the most beautiful panels and just draws character designs so silly on purpose lol. Doraemon -_-

"Hanyanya fuwa" hmm maybe it is that simple to come up with a nice catch phrase...mm that ending, maybe Oran and Kadode used the shift make machine and change that world first? At the end of the day I still have so many questions, like regarding the other factions, they can't just be "evil corporation doing evil things" right? like they were influenced by someone, explaining their knowledge, be it expertise in alien technology or information from the future

Not the greatest ending.... but at least not dissapointing like 75% of series nowadays... I liked it.

In General a 9.9/10.0 series for me.

Hope to see more of DeDeDeDe universe and more from Inio Asano.

If the little scout alien survives, he tells the invaders that earth sucks. However, oran couldnt stand that timeline because kadode dies in it. This time kadode lives and dad handles the scout alien.

I already made a new topic in the movie forum, but I leave this comment here in case anyone is interested.

A few minutes ago I found out that the bluray and dvd were announced, to be exact last September 26th.
The information was published on the website and social networks of the anime, basically there will be 2 “editions”, and it's a little weird how they decided to handle this matter with these 2 versions.

The first edition is called “Blu-ray complete box”, this will include 6 discs, disc 1 and 2 will have the first and second part of the film adaptation, disc 3 will have extra content (presentation events of the film, greetings and promos), discs 4, 5 and 6 will have the 18 episodes of the anime (ONA), 6 episodes per disc.
This first edition according to the website will be released in quite limited quantities, in fact, this edition is exclusive to the online store GAGA and costs 27280 Yen.

The second edition is called “Collector's edition”, it includes 3 discs, where disc 1 and disc 2 will be the first and second part of the movie, and disc 3 will be the extra content.
This second edition will cost 9680 Yen for the Blu-Ray and 8580 Yen for the DVD.

Also, according to this post, the anime version has a different ending than the movie version.

I don't get what's good about this anime. A side character which only appears for a while got the best ending. Convenient device to show memories and to switch timeline, invaders that doesn't utilize their own powerful tools, and villain that stays villain ignoring the situation. Seems like children's anime plot.

I haven't read the manga but if it had the same ending as the anime then I can imagine that the author had been given a notice to finish the manga in a few chapters instead of continuing with the story arc he had been building up until then. It was not a coincidence that Kadode complained in the last episode about that science-fiction stories didn't sell nowadays.

@Ishitateso yes thank you, i've had the exact same theory since the manga has ended. the abrupt change in direction literally starts with kadode's dad having to tell his mangaka that they are axing his manga and he complains that the manga was so good. then he is pretty much used as a plot device to get to the other timeline for a rushed, unfinished and unearned ending that doesn't even involve him. then there is the part where kadode wants to make an adult reimagining of zundacchi, who is this timeline's isobeyan, who is a doraemon parody and that's literally what dededede is, an adult reimagining of doraemon with science fiction; kadode basically wants to make dededede, only to be told that it wouldn't sell. and it's a huge disappointment that such a good series got an axed rushed ending, especially since the author has been building up a lot of plotpoints, the manga had even more of them that got cut out.

oh yeah, not to mention that nobuo looks literally like the author's self insert from "the fall", another of his mangas. guess it's not that unclear what he meant by that.

@Ishitateso it's either that or that Asano was very ambitious, personally I love the ending in the manga (the anime worked worse due to the difference in reading 8 chapters and watching 1.5 episodes) and I get the point he tried to make and love the ending for it... But it does feel something was off, the idea is great, the execution a bit rough

Not really a fan of the " What if " scenario.
Unsure if it was a real life they were living, and not just a memory.
Might have preferred the other life we all had been invested in.
Still Really Good though.

Yes, I hated it. This anime managed to turn me from a fan into a justified hater. What a self-centered, self-obsessed, self-righteous piece of shit the guy who wrote this pile of manure is. It stinks to heaven Vile, vile, vile!

All this effort and time wasted for no good reason whatsoever. A real artist can offer a poem, something you read in less than a minute, and pack enough substance into it that will last for centuries.

Fakes likes the guy who created this manga are the exact opposite. They will have you sit through hours and hours of "content" all for nothing. Soulless and without substance. A curse on all the soulless artists for wasting our time. SHINEEEEEE KUSO YAROUU!!

It seem most people here don't understand the series or the ending and are hating on it. Its pretty funny. People want exciting things to happen to escape their mundane problem and wish for the world to end. Even when it is happening, they aren't really aware of it and are still living their mundane lives.

The 2 MCs are air heads who are so off in their own world that they don't even really notice the world is ending. The contrast of their actions with what is happening in the previous episode is there to really drive that home. They only need each other even tho they basically ended the world in that timeline because of their actions. They cause of the death of billions but at least they have each other. They die completely unaware of what kills them.

There was no need for more post apocalyptic content in the story, it is implied. The world is shit. The girls are dead. The end. The people in space rule over a pile of rubble.

The new timeline ending didn't fix anything, it just gave back their mundane lives with their mundane problems. They still wish the world would end to fix their mundane problems while being unaware of everything that could happen.

Lots of subversion of tropes.

It's is beautifully nihilistic.

I expect too much on this show. It tries to be deep but it failed. The main characters are bunch of kids, they're immature. So many annoying characters.
The character design is weird. The ending are too convenient, easy to change the timeline if something bad happens.

so kadode in the war timeline (main timeline we watched) actually survived and became a dimensional traveler right? leaving the isobeyan manga in the happy timeline for whatever reason.
like that emo kid said "someday we should be able to transcend time and space", so at some point people in that timeline actually managed to do that.

I enjoyed the ending, I didn't have any interest in seeing more of the fucked up world, the ending of ep 16 completely satisfied me. Ouran and Kadode spent their remaining time together helping others while doing something they love, likely with high-spirits, and died side by side. That'd be a satisfying fate for them in such a doomed timeline on its own, and the implication that they're were able to interact with the new timeline somehow even gives us some hope that they're okay after all. The ones in the new timeline aren't "our" Ouran and Kadode, but we see how Ouran and Kadode's friendship can change the world for the better, resulting in the best timeline (as long as they become friends before meeting an invader lol).

This series was great! In retrospect I loved the lead-up to the explosion because it was engaging to see how mundane humanity's response to the situation was. I'm a sucker for stories about friendship, and love the theme about the dramatic impact a friend can make on your world. I checked out the final chapter out of interest and the Isobeyan manga really contextualizes it all.

Though I'm left with many questions on things I'm sure were meant to be ambiguous, like if there's a connection to these new Fujin and Invaders, which would explain they're extremely pacifistic nature we all complained about. Also, I have yet to see anyone mention the room with the hands poking the Earth we see when the father is "shifting". That has some insane implications! Are asterisks the results of the actions of shifters?

I've once seen a theory that claims the Fujins will evolve into the invaders, I don't know if I think it's true but it's a food for thought

It started off very interesting at first but quickly falls off once I realized how dumb the aliens and evil the humans are. From Death Note, Doraemon, Steins Gate, Evangelion, Gundam?, the show has all of these elements in the story. But all of that turns into a huge mess of a scifi that feels rather gimmicky at best. The best part of the show is probably the relationship between Oran and Kadode and also the circle friends. But all of that are simply ruined by constant alien genocide and disjointed Pov storytelling which kind of ruining the flow of the story even though it's supposed to be chronological. I wonder how faithful is this adaptation compared to the manga and how much material are being skimmed over for the adaptation.

@Catalano wait, that's not the case here. All the different timelines exist at the same time, which means that the world and the characters we saw from episode 1 to 16 were completely unaffected by Kadode's father shifting to a different timeline.

So, what was the point of ending the story in a new timeline? Showing that Kadode and Oran will always be together no matter what happens: in the main timeline in which they tragically died (yes, they were the mecha pilots killed by the laser beam), in a timeline without aliens in which they lived a normal life (the second half of episode 17) and also in yet another timeline in which the aliens came but they somehow survived and became "time patrols" (the very last scene).
