Knives was wrong with what he did at the end however I agree with him when he was talking about the spider and butterfly. Vash was being naive. He should let nature take care of itself. Helping the butterfly was going to affect the spider's life. It is too naive to think that you can save both. Knives was right there.

This episode was really emotionally tolling on me. Plus I was shocked by the portrayal of human nature in this episode, as well as Knives' rash decisions. Overall a great episode!

Awesome episode, this and the last were surprisingly dark given the tone of the series so far, makes me very excited for the rest of the series. Knives' portrayal is perhaps not the best, but whatever.

Obviously Vash couldn't be a human, but I didn't expect this series to be a sci-fi utopian project. Our hero is really just another pretentious one that thinks he can save everyone from everything.
Well, nevertheless this was the best episode and probably the one with no comic exaggeration.

Vash trying to save both the spider and the butterfly was something.....I know he is a pacifist and all but he is such a hypocrite. Saving them both would result in the spider starving to dead. When Knives rebutted Vash's logic and reasoning, Vash retaliate with violence.... I do like Vash but sometime he is very face palmy.

Great episode btw , pretty cool to see the clash of legacies and ideologies left behind by Rem and Knives in the show.

Amazing episode. I'm happy to see some backstory for this series.

I'm assuming that Knives is Legato. Curious to what made him change his name.

Rem was okay. Such a beautiful, loving maternal character who raised Vash to be who he is now. I was so sad when she died.D:

I hate Knives. He's so evil!

I can't help but agreeing with Knives

"Like hell I'd let Humans immigrate.
That would be like spreading germs across our healthy universe"

Humans are destroying everything around them without a single care
and they even said that the Earth got destroyed because of them

Knives is being logical and
I honestly think killing every humans is the right choice

Well that was definitely my favorite episode of the series so far. The backstory as to why Vash is the way he is really ties a lot together.

Knives is awesome in an evil maniacal way. Is he Legato? I see a lot of people in this thread kind of seem to think that way. Maybe he changed his look and name to distance himself from Vash? I'm not sure, because when Vash says "I'll take care of Knives" at the end, it makes it seem like he's out to get him...why would he give Vash the chance to find him?

Interesting...

Yes, totally a Cain and Abel thing as someone mentioned above. Also not a filler episode as another person mentioned above. Rem is super Christian (in a fairly good way), and this whole story seems based on Christian myth. I'm curious how Knives made all of those events happen - I assume he has some kind of mind control? Steve did seem like a terrible person, though Vash seems to have learned some traits from him like being really handsy and the weird laugh. Knives is pretty creepy, and that meadow place reminded me of the end of Majora's Mask. Also, it was cool to see a generational ship like in Starship by Brian Aldiss or the Metamorphosis Alpha RPG. 2001: A Space Odyssey also comes to mind, with Knives as HAL.

Vash seems like he knows that he has to kill Knives. The whole story seems to be about the desire for peace/pacifism, but the ugly truth that it won't always work. Anyway, everything is stepping into full gear now, and it is great!

People are actually calling this episode a filler? What the actual f... I think I lost my faith in humanity once again lol.
The whole idea of the human race travelling through the galaxy trying to find a new home because Earth is screwed and those ships with people "sleeping" in them reminded me SO MUCH of ME: Andromeda xd

Either way, at first, I thought that Vash and Knives are actually girls, but right before Vash has started speaking I thought "Wait, she has green eyes, blond hair... What if... *Vash starts talking* HOLY SHIT LOL"

Also... Seems like Legato is not the one who will be "the final boss", huh? :P
Yes, I thought that he could be Legato at first, but since Knives' and Legato's eye colour is different I actually think the opposite. I didn't cut that thought out completely tho, only because of that moment where Knives walks into the crew members rooms. If we assume that Knives is actually Legato, then I'd say that using his mind control abilities he made "the guy" go crazy, and he made "the girl" think that Steve raped her. But if we assume that Knives in not Legato then I have no idea what he could've done. BUT! If Legato has mind control abilities and he is a brother of Vash, doesn't that mean that Vash should also have them? But he doesn't use them because he's trying to be a good guy and he thinks that using them is a terrible thing to do? Eh...
But who cares about that when you have things like eye colour, amirite? :') Their hair colour is also different, but that can be changed much easier. Changing the eye colour would make the whole "is Knives actually Legato or not" thing seem like a "forced mystery" to me.

Anyhow, my bet is that Knives is actually a boss of Legato :)
This is going to be dope.

So humanity trashed earth and set out to colonize space. Yet there are still researchers out there that can't deal with the tought that extraterrestrial lifeforms (aka. aliens) are different from humans? What a douche.

One of the best episodes so far. So Rem and her people are the last survivors from our earth since we destroyed it ourselves. Pretty actual topic today in politics actually. Vash and that Knives guy are "aliens" they found on the way, first they age quickly and then they age not at all anymore it seems or just very slowly.

This episode is excellent like it is other anime, so bad that they don't keep this seinen way to the end.

People are actually calling this episode a filler? What the actual f... I think I lost my faith in humanity once again lol.

- That episode was insanely good. Anybody know of any similar sci-fi anime like this episode? I'm craving more ... (It's like Blue Gender no censor scenes)

The 13 firsts episodes are comedy shows where no one dies and sporadics individuallys, henceforth 14 onwards has story that the really bad guys chasing Vash and they continue to the end, except this episode (17). Thats is seinen, mature, sci-fi, nude realley something awsome.

Everything I was wondering about Vash's past and origins were answered in this excellent and mind-blowing episode! It was very nice to finally know about who Rem is along with the person who Vash has dedicated his life in searching for.

While Vash is a pure yet naive pacifist like his mother figure, Knives is a cold and calculating being that can't comprehend anything that goes beyond utilitarian logic even if he does make sense sometimes. The new planet they're in has many scumbags doing what vile humans do as usual even after a hundred years has passed, but there are just as many if not more good people out there. I'm very much interested at seeing how things would turn out!

I'm surprised I didn't manage to call the whole "artificial lifeform" thing before this episode. Even then, I wasn't expecting Vash to be over 108 years old.

For once, I feel like the contrarian. Attempting to condense 16 episodes of building tension into 22 minutes is near impossible, and this show definitely suffers from that. The turning point for Knives was quite sudden, and the final half of the episode ended up feeling rushed. This would have benefitted from having two episodes to really flesh out the idea - even if the creation turning against the creator thematic is pretty much a staple of science fiction at this point.

wow, the anime really took interesting different way of the story here, but it still probably were the best episode so far, and i have feeling it will only get better.

it actually went above my expectations, i didn't thought vash to be some sort of alien, but it sure showed how vash is "monster" in his own way.

i want to see now what the anime will take from this ep, probably something good :)

Turns out a few of my predictions from ep 12 were right. This episode answered so many questions I had in 20 minutes.

I still do have a few questions which are, If they're not human, what are they and Why did Vash just stop aging? He's apparently 107 years old but looks young as hell. Does his race just stop aging at a certain age?

To follow up with those questions, the scene where they found Vash raises a few questions for me as well, Like where did they find him? Was it on another planet? if so, which one? If he's not human then why does he resemble one so much?

Anyways, it was sorta refreshing to see that Rem wasn't a lover. I like it way more that she's a mother figure and an influence to Vash instead of a lover. If she were one I feel like it would be so plain.

Edit:

Knives was right in multiple ways but I feel as though he handled it wrong? Sorta?

The human race ended up destroying their own planet because they were selfish and didn't realize what the effect they had on it until it was too late. He described them as "germs" which I can agree with. If the human race were to go onto another flourishing planet, I know that they would end up doing the same thing they did with Earth. They'd have to leave again and find another planet to basically infect it just like a germ.

Knives was also correct with the butterfly spider situation. It's the cycle of life, if Vash were to continuously free the butterflies then the spider would end up dead regardlessly. But Vash was also correct in the sense that we/they don't have the right to take someone else's life unless we actually need to (survival like for food.)

Awesome we get to learn more about Rem!

I really liked seeing young Vash and also the concept of 'Project Seeds'. Also, the good values that Knives and Vash were around when in the ship and near Rem (who was an optimist, environmentalist and promoted peace and tranquility).

This says a LOT about current affairs like climate change, that we face in our own world. Really a lot of commentary on how we destroy our own world out of greed. Reaping the planet's resources for own gain, not out of survival, but out of excess.

It IS our intrinsic nature to survive. "Survival instincts take over, DISMISSING shame." Humans really will do anything to survive. Yet, these folks seem to have strong and well-intentioned ideals.

Like Rem said: "As human beings we have the ability to right our wrongs." She has very strict values on not endangering the planet or any environment.
I really like her a lot.

Okay, so we know Vash and Knives aren't human and Rem saved them (from what I could gather).

It was so sweet seeing Rem give Vash that haircut.

The spider and butterfly scene was pretty profound. Knives was right in some ways (the spider would starve), but Vash has displayed through the whole show, via his moral code of not killing, that you CAN save everyone.

Knives mind-controlled people and got them to act chaotic, because he's a sociopath who disregards humanity and sees them as parasites.

The ending was heartbreaking.

I find it very interesting that they used the voices of actual adolescent males in the English dub. Usually they use an adult woman or adult male. Also, I feel like they usually give twins in anime the same voice. So it was cool seeing twins with voices that for once actually match AND differ from one another. Same goes for character designs. In anime, there's this weird trope of making twins carbon copies of one another. You'd think that'd be even more true for twins that aren't human. I appreciate the difference in hair colors and even textures.

That all aside, lol, this was a touching but also tragic episode. Very nice to finally see Vash's past.

It feels like this show doesn't know what it wants to be. Sometimes, it's a Western. Other times, a comedy. Sometime, a drama, a mystery show, an action show, a sci-fi, etc. I feel like the next episode will be completely different from this one, despite not knowing anything about what it will be about.
