Haven't watched many from this year so it's "Boku no kokoro yabai yatsu" for now or Tybw pt 2 after I complete it.
If you enjoyed the time you wasted, then its not a waste of time.

It's Sousou no Frieren. Proper fantasy anime with great production value. It's way too beautiful for me not give it. Recency bias? Maybe. It's not finish airing yet but 14 eps is plenty of episodes to know. Follow by Vinland Saga and "Oshi no Ko".

I'm going to go with Frieren: Beyond Journey's End. I've not been watching Anime long and this is the first Anime where I've read the manga before the show aired. It's got great world building, Great characters, it knows when to be serious and when to be funny and the setting and story are fantastic.

Hmm, only two anime max that I consider as AotY, eh? Then I will go with these:
1. Shingeki no Kyojin: The Final Season - Kanketsu-hen
2. Dr. Stone Season 3

Although, the list featuring all of my AotY contenders looks like this:
- Shingeki no Kyojin: The Final Season - Kanketsu-hen
- Dr. Stone Season 3
- Trigun Stampede
- Jigokuraku
- Pluto

[1] Zom 100: Bucket List of the Dead - Extremely interesting take on the zombie apocalypse genre, overall very entertaining to watch.

[2] Kidou Senshi Gundam: Suisei no Majo - Incredible art & soundtrack with a great emotional touch and a modicum of war crimes. 8/10 for part 1, 9/10 for Prologue and part 2.

2: Mushoku Tensei II: Isekai Ittara Honki Dasu (Mushoku Tensei: Jobless Reincarnation Season 2)

Now this could change because there are a few series I have not finished yet but I think this pretty accurate for this year.

For just an anime I've enjoyed witch I watched this year for the first time but isn't from this year I'd go for Garden of Sinners

i really liked a lot of anime this year. For the ones that aired in 2023 i'd say it is between:

-Heavenly Delusion (even though the 12th episode disgusted me so much i didn't watch the last one)
-Kaguya sama Movie
-Oshi no ko (i still haven't watched the last episode because i read the manga and know the ruby/idol focused arc is boring as hell)
-Zoom 100 but the last episodes were delayed.
-absolute masterclass but i need to catch up i'm still at ep 8
-Snk the final chapters. it was a great send off for such an iconic anime and i think the ending wasn't that bad like the manga readers told us.
-Fate/strange fake

Now for the anime that i watched this year but which aired prior to 2023:
-The monogatari Series (up to hanamonogatari)
-Link Click. i watched the s1 and it was fantastic but the first episodes of s2 were boring so i dropped it
-Golden time. A genuinely good romance anime but the plot point around ghost banri was really weird and unnecessary

Frieren or Apothecary Diaries. but excluding those because they are both halfway through their runs, it'd be Skip and Loafer, closely followed by Pluto.

top 25, which excludes shows that finished but I did not complete, but doesn't exclude Fall shows that haven't finished yet:

Frieren
Apothecary Diaries
Skip and Loafer
Pluto
Kaguya-sama: The First Kiss that Never Ends
Oshi no Ko
Bang Dream It's MyGo!!!!!
Undead Murder Farce
The Ancient Magus' Bride s2
My Love Story with Yamada at Lv999
16bit Sensation: Another Layer
Otaku Elf
Vexations of a Shut-in Vampire Princess
100 Girlfriends
Handyman Saitou
The Magical Revolution of the Reincarnated Princess and the Genius Young Lady
Mobile Suit Gundam: The Witch from Mercury s2
Fate strange/fake special
Zom 100
The Dangers in My Heart
My Clueless First Friend
Undead Unluck
Level 1 Demon Lord and One Room Hero
Spy x Family s2
I'm in Love with the Villainess

shows I liked that I haven't finished: Trigun Stampede, Buddy Daddies, Heavenly Delusion, Hell's Paradise

most disappointing shows: Mushoku Tensei II (which isn't bad, but high mid, but that feels like a huge drop given the first season's quality), Tonikawa s2, Konosuba Explosion, Reign of the Seven Spellblades

worst shows I actually watched: Reborn to Master the Blade, My One Hit Kill Sister, The Most Heretical Last Boss Queen

With that logic though, you could choose an anime from 2011, 1996, or 1979. It's pretty relevant considering the thread topic is entitled "So what's your anime of the year for 2023?"

Ergo Proxy, which came out in 2006, is a great anime, but putting it forward here would have nothing to do with this thread...

Frieren and Mushoku Tensei II. Despite some adaptation faults with Vol 7 in one particular episode, I really enjoyed Mushoku Tensei and the characterization from the season a ton and it definitely was the most invested I was with an anime this year (especially with the characters). Frieren had a couple episodes that were a bit slow and didn't stand out too much but the rest of it has been fantastic and it has had a flawless adaptation so far that is so much more enjoyable and immersive to watch than reading the manga. I think since Frieren doesn't really have much issues and Mushoku Tensei's got a lot more to offer with some future cours like the 2nd cour which I think will have better content, I'd give the edge to Frieren this time around. I do think MT has a much stronger chance for being Anime of the Year next year for me though.

2023 in general has been pretty damn good though for anime in my opinion. A lot better than last year. There's like 6-7 shows from this year that I have seen which I have higher rated than the highest I gave a show from last year which was an 8/10. Shows like Apothecary Diaries, Dangers in my Heart, Insomniacs After School are all fantastic watches too and better than anything from last year for me. Winter was meh but the other seasons offered at least something each that was great.

my aoty is far and away the last chapters of Attack on Titan—literally my Roman Empire lmao

but since those episodes are part of an established series and I believe you’re asking for a 2023 specific aoty too I’d give that to Heavenly Delusion

honorable mentions to the Apothecary Diaries, Frieren, Skip and Loafer, My Love Story with Yamada-kun, Vinland Saga 2, and Hell’s Paradise for all cracking my 9/10 ranking though I guess we’ll see with the first two since they’re ongoing
(man was Spring 2023 a good season for me lol)

oh and the Kaguya-sama movie was an easy 10/10 I’m not sure that counts but hey I’ll mention it anyway

Vinland Saga Season 2 is my Anime of the Year nomination. Both openings were spot on, the animation was great, and while the story did move a bit slow at first overtime it became better.

I really dont watch anime that are currently airing, there are just so many anime to watch that I cant justify doing that over watching something thats already completed that I can binge and move onto the next thing.

That being said, I have watched 5 anime in total that aired in 2023, 3 of them being things I enjoyed.

1. Aggretsuko Season 5, I have just loved this series since it started airing. I think it was better than the previous season but not the best season of the series.
2. Reborn as a Vending Machine, I Now Wander the Dungeon- I got into it for the premise at first, and really enjoyed the world. It didnt feel like the same fantasy bland isekai setting that we see over and over again.
3. The Great Cleric- I loved that the main character wasn't all powerful and you actually see them progress and become stronger over time.

As for things I have enjoyed that are from other years, I will post 3 just to match the number of anime i liked from 2023.

1. Shadows House- I watched season 1 a couple of weeks ago, and am currently watching season 2 as I write this. I love the world, characters, and the music- especially the ending of season 1 and the opening of season 2.
2. Hajime no Ippo- I binged the full main series, 75 episodes, in about 1-2 months. I loved it. While it is an older anime, you can tell that they actually cared about the animation and characters.
3. Wonder Egg Priority- I went into this completely blind. I try not to look up any information on anime, or usually even read the description so I did not know what I was getting into. It was very good, but such a hard subject for some people to handle. Like, I could never watch this one with my BF- he's been on the same side of the situation the main characters are in and he wouldnt be able to watch it. It's one I kinda wish I had known about some stuff before hand just so I could have prepared myself.

[1] From 2023 I would have to say it's between Mushoku S2, Frieren and Heavenly Delusion for me (Vinland and Oshi no Ko were great). Mushoku is my all time fav show alongside Steins;Gate and I love the second season very much, even if I believe it to be the worst cour of the 3 released as of now, but Frieren came out of nowhere and just blew me away completely with its beautiful storytelling. It gives me some of the biggest emotional punches I've ever had to endure. Heavenly Delusion doesn't get behind either, its world building and mystery elements were just amazing.

[2] From non seasonal animes it would have to be One Piece no questions asked. I don't really remember exactly which parts I actually watched this year, but I believe that from the early parts of the Alabasta saga until the time skip have been all inside this year. So yeah, it has been an unbelievable ride.

Mine is yet to be decided.

For Winter - Summer, it's Kawaisugi Crisis. The only show to score 10/10 during the first 3 seasons.
But Fall has both Migi to Dali and Spy X Family S2 as contenders. And while SxF is a pretty safe bet I just have to reflect on after it finishes, Migi to Dali could both drop out completly or "easily" be my AotY, depending on how it ends next Monday.

Didn't watch many older shows during this year due to stacked seasons. And among them, the best one (Shokei Shoujo Virgin Road - barely 9/10) is not even in the Top 10 of what I watched this year.
