-Truna- said: Kousaka gets more interesting with every episode, as does Asuka. Also, I get that yuri bait is yuri bait, but why the heck is Kumiko looking at Shuichi all of a sudden? If she ends up with him, it's just too forced. Reina's the one sharing meaningful moments with Kumiko here; Shuichi is sort of just there. Mh? But Kumiko hasn't thought of him neither for a second, we can see Shuuichi just for a moment in this episode. I don't think she's interested in him, I hope that they will manage to do a thing like "nothing happened, friends like before", all but ShuMiko, I just don't like them as a couple, they have given me nothing. And I can't take seriously the crush of Reina. |

I'm no longer lurking! This debate has become too lively and interesting to sit out. The points I read are not aimed at the anime for being bad, it because it's that good. It has hit a cord (pun intended) with many former band members. The theme of the show is, when is it o.k. to surpass the seniors? Notably, when the senior has emotion and years of effort are invested in their last year. (yes, my names Captain Obvious, I'll be here all week) Reina appears to be a solitary, very private person. The yuri discussion (while I'm sure is in good humor) distracted from seeing how Reina views friendships. She seeks to to have only a few friends, and keeps those friends extremely close. Reina needs Kuniko as sounding board and emotional buffer, ergo after her outburst in the hall, Reina asks Kurinko if she agrees; then hugs. Reina isn't rude, but has a silent conceit. We, the viewers, are given an omniscient point of view. The minor charters do not get to see Reina's private side. The appearance of favoritism is real to the minor charters who's perspective is limited. Suddenly new instructor gives new girl best part. Oh! and he happens to know her. There are laws against familial favoritism in the work place for a reason. Reina is a quite, diligent, and accomplished player. But her quiet, somber demeanor comes across as aloof, and her outburst may remind the second year 'scrubs' about the conflicts last year. The statement 'complain only when you're better than me',' is condescending, and makes no logical since. If someone were better than her, they wouldn't be complaining. Then, following this logic, only the elitists can have any say so in band affairs. It smacks of an indirect way of saying 'shutup and go away.' This verbal smack down is what makes Reina come across as self absorbed. " Sensei handled the whole thing extremely badly. He should have enforced his will there and then, making it clear that he's professional and that he chose Reina because she was better " I don't think the after school student groups can be completely compared to the band groups we have here in the 'States. I think Japan has student run, after school groups. Whereas, high school bands here in the US are classes where you get grades. An instructor of a US high school band can 'put her foot down' because she has an instructor's authoritative role in official class. Make her mad and get an 'F', hurting your grade point average. Taki-sensei may see his role more as a group adviser, and also be worried about band morale in a loose volunteer organization. Too many negative problems and people start walking out. They have nothing to lose but the headache. I can speak from experience about the US high school band as a former member. I hope someone could write authoritatively about the nature of the bands in Japan. NishiJones, I feel your pain. Natsuki forgives Kumiko for forcing her out. And even has the prescience of mind to say it. But Natsuki understands her lack of practice is why she's out. She is not emotionally invested in years of practice. Still, Natsuki for best girl! Reina is easily the superior trumpet player, but Kaori is best trumpet leader and band member by far. Reina's impact on the band's morale is detrimental to her goal of going with them to nationals. She's needs to win hearts if the team. While Yoko is annoyingly defensive about her beloved Kaori, and Kaori's last year opportunity; Reina is also annoying defensive about her beloved Taki-sensei and sees his skills as impeccably flawless. Asuka doesn't care, and that's a problem. She's is the people person, and probably the only one with interpersonal skills to put the band's moral back on track to work together. TL;DR - Your mad skills are not everything and not the only thing needed for a band to go to nationals. |

Hope this series gets a second season :D I'm hoping Reine takes the cake again Kaori next episode in the second audition just to piss everyone off (ones who doubt her 1st audition win) :) I think there may be more to Asuka than meets the eye, it felts like there's an evil within her that she doesn't wanna reveal. |

Since band was compulsory for you, I'm curious, what do you feel about Taki's philosophy where results matter over all else, given the context that this is a student club, an extra-curricular where students join to experience things outside of academics. |

Just a random guess but I have a feeling that Kaori-Senpai would make a public concession of defeat and decline the role when the members vote her not because she is a better trumpet player than Kousaka but they just treat Kaori with favor. Kaori is also a proud player who never accept favoritism, I'm sure. In such a case, she'll be very angry to unfair members. She had been known Kousaka was much better than herself as soon as Kousaka joined the club. What Kaori wants now is, get a verification by people even though she knows she could fail. |

You haven't figured it out yet, have you? Well it took me a second watch to figure it out too. This audition is a popularity contest. Taki will let the band decide. And you know what that means. Reina could play Koari right off the stage. But the "Madonna" of the band will still win the vote. It's human nature to vote with your heart and not with your head. Honestly, i would be SHOCKED if Reina wins the vote. If Reina is to play the solo it will be because Kaori bows out gracefully. |

Cirris said: Somehow, i think it comes down to Asuka. It would explain why it's important for Kumiko to get all serious with Asuka and ask her opinion. It would also explain the quick shot of her grinning after Kaori stood up to challenge. About that grin actually, here's my take on it, didn't Asuka tell Kumiko that she think that Kaori is trying to gain sympathy? (Or did I get that wrong?).I didn't quite get what hmshe meant first, but to be honest I understood, the moment Kaori stood up. Because honestly I didn't thing she'd be for having a second audition, let alone being the first ine to get up, because she acted all graciously about the whole thing in front of the band members. My guess is that she actually knows that Reina is a better player, but she still wants to play the glamorous solo part and therefore took advantage of that rumour spreading. Asuka saw through the whole thing she was trying to pull to get her way and when she was proven right by Kaori standing up, she could help but to grin. Whether the rumour was started by Kaori herself or whether is was just a coincidence, I can't say at this point however, though nonetheless the timing seems strange. [Wasn't it somewhere in the beginning where it was mentioned, that Kaori's always trying to keep up the good girl act, being everyone's idol? (I might be hazzy on that though ^^")] On a less dramatic note, I actually started adoring Natsuki after this, not only for being ok with Kumiko winning the audition, but for feeling that it might bother Kumiko and reassuring her in the most humble way :) (though it did crack me up, when Kumiko said that she was scared of her smile xD) |

NICE ONE! Kaori fights head-on! On the part wherein Kumiko and Natsuki where in the restaurant...Kumiko was so conscious about Natsuki's feelings but it all went into confirmation that Natsuki is really a good person who accepts herself and even put Kumiko in tears because it all went well with Natsuki. Wow! I don't know if I'm annoyed to Yuuko but she went full pissed-off to Kousaka! Yuri-fans rejoice! That was an EPIC hug scene KumikoxReina there...(of course that event pissed the hell off also to Reina) Reina is in love with Taki-sensei......weeeeeeh!?!?!? very amusing face of Kumiko when she said: "Love" (Lavu) When it comes to personal comments you really can't see through Asuka. Asuka a facade who doesn't give a fuck to everyone in personal comments. You really can't crack that Asuka. 2nd Audition...go for it Kaori!!! FIGHT FOR IT! 5/5. |

This verbal smack down is what makes Reina come across as self absorbed. I agree to a point. I thought that statement she used was wrong. Since Reina seems to be a bit awkward in social situations I would expect a "Dr. Sheldon Cooper"-type response. She should have been a bit more diplomatic. "Sensei handled the whole thing extremely badly. He should have enforced his will there and then, making it clear that he's professional and that he chose Reina because she was better " I don't think the after school student groups can be completely compared to the band groups we have here in the 'States. I hope someone could write authoritatively about the nature of the bands in Japan.[/quote] As one who was also a States bandsmemeber I agree completely. As we are seeing there is a big difference between the two countries besides the clubs being more student run vs. the states which is a class where you do get a grade. Taki-sensei's personal life should be completely separate than that of the class adviser. So he knows Reina. He knows what she can do and how well. He can also be very objective when it comes to the class. IMO I think he choose the right person for the solo parts. Another difference is that solo parts are usually shared between the first sections. They hierarchy isn't the same in the US. If a lower class-man is better than upper, they will be rewarded with the chair accordingly. Natsuki forgives Kumiko for forcing her out. And even has the prescience of mind to say it. But Natsuki understands her lack of practice is why she's out. She is not emotionally invested in years of practice. Still, Natsuki for best girl! Natsuki is coming out to be the good girl. She's is the people person, and probably the only one with interpersonal skills to put the band's moral back on track to work together. Wow, this sucks for Reina. The trumpet soloist is going to be decided by a majority vote, basically making it a popularity contest. She is clearly more skilled, as that was the reason she got the solo part initially, but chances are she will lose the vote due to the majority voting against her. I am making this guess this based on the rumours and the fact that she is only a first-year. It's clear that some of the other band members don't like her due to her tendency to be straightforward (she has the courage to be honest, which is difficult in a high school group setting). Hopefully the other band members vote based solely on what they hear, though I doubt they will. Taki also felt the pressure, which was shown when he snapped at the students for removing the blankets. He was in a pretty tough spot, he seems like the kind of person who follows through on their decisions but at the same time he could see/hear that the ensemble members were not working together. |

EeveeRain said: Wow, this sucks for Reina. The trumpet soloist is going to be decided by a majority vote, basically making it a popularity contest. I'm sure the thing will not go that simple. If the two girls play the trumpets in an ordinary music class room whose acoustic effect was not very good, some of the students might not tell the difference between the power and the preciseness of their sounds. By the way, the club members will perform in a wide concert hall on the day of real competition, where the way of sound resonation must be completely different from that of the class room. So, Taki-Sansei planned to use the blankets to make the acoustic effect of the classroom worse so that the students had to practice to make their tone more precise and louder at the same time. That's why he have the students prepare the blankets, which was to train them under a more difficult environment. And now, Taki-Sensei decided he would audition again in a concert hall, not a classroom. Which could clearly emphasise the difference of the sounds between the girls. Didn't you see the ribbon girl started crying when Taki-Sensei sentenced to re-do the audition in public? It was definitely not a cry of joy. She knew what she had done; and which made her precious Senpai to stand for the next and final audition not in front of a fare panel of judges but the club members who might have their own some ulterior motive. I guess she was trying to spread the rumour to get Reina to decline to play the solo part voluntarily. But her plot has called the worst case scenario, Taki-Sensei has decided to summon the public execution. He really looked like a smiling sadist to me. |

Regarding sympathy, you misunderstood. From the Crunchyroll translation, Asuka says, "It isn't that she has a problem with the audition. Much less that she's trying to get sympathy." As for the idea that Kaori is crassly trying to take advantage of the situation and perhaps even started the rumor, that's far fetched. Her portrayal in the series has been wholly sympathetic: she supported Haruka during the ensemble and Aoi troubles, supported the "practice" faction during the ensemble conflict, defended Reina practicing the solo, cautioned Yuko against mistreating Reina, discouraged the rumor, and tried to stop Yuko's agitation. It would be quite a contrivance for her suddenly to become the story's malevolent backroom schemer. Certainly Kaori wants to play the solo, but her way of expressing it, "I've been hoping I'd play well enough that there wouldn't be any more fighting... I want to play my favorite parts really well," doesn't sound very selfish (certainly less so than Reina's "I want to become special"). It's possible Reina's "I'm better than Kaori-sempai" and "complain... when you've surpassed me" stung Kaori's pride, leading her to resume practicing the solo and to request the second audition. But it's more likely that Kaori is more concerned about the band falling apart. She's one of the seniors scarred by the previous year's fiasco, and something similar is happening again. Without a second audition, the rumors will probably continue, and the band will remain broken. The second audition is the only evident way to heal the band. And I think this is why Asuka smiles when Kaori requests the second audition. Asuka likes to focus on music when things are troubled, as we see during the ensemble conflict, when Aoi leaves, and when Minori is distracted. She empathizes with Kaori practicing alone after the rumor roils the band. And she approves of playing to heal the rift. |

Yeah, I didn't know about that yet, it seemed to be a possibiliy though, so I thought I might as well comment on it or actually mention, but not comment on it, since I'm bad at jugding characters like her (but maybe I'm currently just way too influenced by Hikigaya Hachiman's "I hate nice girls"-speech xD) proper1420 said: Certainly Kaori wants to play the solo, but her way of expressing it, "I've been hoping I'd play well enough that there wouldn't be any more fighting... If there's somebody more suited/better that person should be the one to do so. Even if it is just because they are better, because there'd be no point in sending people who can't compete to a competition. That's also why I can't really call Reina selfish, because if she wants to play the solo, because she's better and because she wants to be special, maybe you can call it a bit arrogant, but she did none the less put just as much effort in her practice as anyone. So I don't mind her less feeling/emontional/sympathtic (I can't think of a right word) reason behind insisting on playing the solo. proper1420 said: And I think this is why Asuka smiles when Kaori requests the second audition. Scarm said: The statement 'complain only when you're better than me',' is condescending, and makes no logical since. The problem of this case is there is no students insisting Senpai can play the trumpet better than Kousaka... Most of them understand the result of the solo part audition was fair already. Still, they hope to let Senpai have the credit for the completion of the three-year work for the club. In addition to this Senpai herself didn't rise the hand when someone asked to the students, "If you think the first audition was unfair, please rise your hand." She never said nor thought the solo audition was a fixed game. If it were a convivial meeting or something, that would be all right. But now, they have decided to go National competition. So, they must have focused on a topic "Which is the better player." But, like the last year's tragedy, some of the club members are going to the same or even worse route than the last year. If the rumor spreads out of the school and the education committee of the prefecture, some of them are just a politician, Taki-Sensei might have to quit from the club. As for him, it is nothing because he really is a excellent musician and he'll get new job easily. But, what it would be the corrupted club and the high school? |

From /a/ Taki has a Plan Despite having some notoriety in the medium via his contacts, he is a nobody. Something must be done. He finds a school with zero reputation, one where he doesn't have to handle expectations and where any good result would be thus amplified. By chance he tells Reina that he aims to teach there and lead the musical club into nationals, making her change any plans of going to a better school. The club is in shambles, few decent players, but at least he has a trump card with Reina. Again, only by chance he chooses a piece with a trumpet solo. He totally planned this right? Yea, this isn't that kind of show, it's still amusing that this actually fits. |

man are you fucking kidding me? How is that supposed to be fair... That girl will win the audition by count no matter how good she is just because people are biased as fuck now. The teachers intentions are realistic but now everybody loses. The better musician won't be able to play the solo (unless they go the most unrealistic route with this anime due the reason I've stated above ). They've lose a shitload of time due to this shitty mood. They'll lose more time because of the additional audition. They are drastically lowering their chances of winning the competition because of all that shit and then they even lowering it further because of that majority decision bullshit. I mean this was the best decision to get some focus back into the band but I really can't stand people who can't follow through with their decisions(especially when it's not questioned by the people who are involved but by some random bitch that is obsessed with the involved person). Totally should have looked for a different way to settle this situation. htsuji said: It was definitely not a cry of joy. But her plot has called the worst case scenario, Taki-Sensei has decided to summon the public execution. He really looked like a smiling sadist to me. fair point. But I don't believe there is any chance that Reina wins by a public vote. The band is already biased against Taki-sensei and Reina. Besides Reina isn't really the type of person that is liked by other people. She had to be a LOT better than Kaori to actually get the solo part despite the two points I stated. And while she probably is a lot better I don't think it is to the extent to nullify those two points. If Reina actually gets to play the solo part then it is due to Kaori admitting she doesn't deserve the solo-part in comparison to Reina and withdrawing from the audition after the vote ended like anyone suggested before. But there is no way she'll win a popularity vote. Not even a big hall to play in will change that. |

Nanashi- said: man are you fucking kidding me? I'm dead serious. If the result goes down to of just a popularity contest and Kaori-senpai knows it is a fixed game, I'm sure she (not Reina) will quit the club. Why? Because she knew Reina is much superior to her. To have a desire to be the solo player is one thing, but to get the position when people know she is lesser as a player and just do a favor is another. Kaori cannot accept such humiliation because she is also a very proud trumpet player. |

I'm totally triggered on the Yuri Ship. I'm gonna barf when/if Kumiko goes back to boring tromboner boy. ----------------------------------------------------------- If those words are true. It totally makes Reina incredibly dynamic personality. She would totally take the bullet knowing full well it would stall her singular ambition. But in a sense she knows her long term goals will falter if she continues to push straight ahead and end up in a band full of antagonistic bitches filled with hate for her. Man talk about ramping up the anticipation. Now i'm counting the minutes until tomorrow. htsuji said: Nanashi- said: man are you fucking kidding me? I'm dead serious. Quitting the band isn't an option either. It doesn't solve the hate for Reina or the mood of the band. It would make it worse. In Japan, causing trouble for others is considered a big no-no. You sometimes have to swallow your pride and take one for the collective whole. judging by the previews...Reina is probably going to tactically throw the audition so the band members can save face when voting for Kaori and it wouldn't be obvious enough for it to feel like an insult. Though I'm sure the section leaders will know. But hey, as long as the selfish peons are happy. lets go for the DUD-gold. |

NO! Reina throwing the competition?! Just No! People are questioning her ethics, not her skills. Pretending to be not as good as Kaori will only make things worse. - I should write out a more detailed, thought out explanation, but this just needed saying. - |

Natsuki was such a good sport, actually an awesome sis to Kumiko The conflict has a good answer with a second audition which is public to the club I didn't expect Reina being that close to Taki sensei It was a great watch again |

Headband girl is just unbelievable. A genius (or extremely hardworking) junior comes who's better than her senpai and she goes apeshit and stirring up unneeded drama. |

aleios said: Honestly that teacher is a massive loser. Seriously he got all shitty because a few bitches were making nasty comments? Come on. This dude is the type that ends up being a cuckold. This show went from 8/10 to 1/10 real quick. Dropped. Good riddance. KyoAni you are getting shit. Better script writing next time please. The band is falling apart, what do you want him to do? Ignoring bitching won't improve performance, he needs to get band corporating again. Best way to shut up losers and move on is to publicly prove that they are wrong. A public audition in big hall will prove once and for all that Reina is better and everyone will have to suck it up and move on. And if they cant, get lost and be replaced by those who actually wanna play but got a bit short. It's far better than dealing with half assed effort. And can this series stay away from whole romance grounds, please. It's so badly handled, I cringe every time. Shuichi/Kumiko barely even talk, she literally doesn't care. Taki/Reina... what did I miss? Since when is she in love with him? Seriously? You guys better not be supporting it cause just moments ago most of you were shouting "Kumiko and Reina only admire each other, stop forcing love into it!" and now we get this... At least Kumiko/Reina have proper interactions and support from both sides with quiet a few sensual shots like lip touching. They actually have some sort of base for shipping. The hetero above? None. This series really needs to stay away from hetero love cause it has no idea how to handle it and stop yuri baiting and keep Reina/Kumiko relationship more platonic and just focus on music from now on. |

Wish this show was more about music and less about slice of life high school drama but at least we should be nearing the performance. |

TsundereHeart said: On the other hand, the light-brown haired girl was a total bitch this episode. I am on the side that Taki is professional enough to separate his job and his private life, and choosing Reina was not the wrong choice. It was especially out of place for another person, not Kaori, to confront him too. To me, that's just the most arrogant thing that she could have done, because she didn't fucking get to listen to either players performance. This. and also RyanBebop said: Wish this show was more about music and less about slice of life high school drama but at least we should be nearing the performance. this. I don't like the fact that the music is second to the drama in their lives. Also hated the attitude of almost every girl in the band now. They don't really want to get better as a band at all. They just care about their own selfish agenda. (Which I admit resembles more everyday life than any other anime but that's not what I'm here for). That girl that complained to the teacher was totally out of place and just made the situation worse for people that had done nothing wrong (Reina and the few people who actually want to make something out of that lousy band). Kaori didn't get the part because of her lack of skills and if they don't get that much then they shouldn't be in the band in the first place. This episode alone dropped the rating of the show for me. |

-We finally see the full Kumiko flashback that popped up ominously in a previous episode -Natsuki's got a pretty good eye to see that Kumiko's been bothered by her noninclusion into the competition ensemble. The scene at the restaurant was pretty nice considering everything that's happened so far. -Seems like some people are skeptical about the relationship between Reina and Taki -Reina's pretty ice cold when others question her abilities, but the Yuko girl kinda had it coming -Uh, am I even watching the same show anymore? That declaration of love went in the exact opposite direction I expected it to. -Yeah that seemed like the perfect solution to try and get the band back on its feet again Pretty scandalous episode but it felt pretty empty. Most of the episode was dedicated to plot progression, but the main conflict of the episode wasn't even resolved; the resolution was only planned. However, there wasn't really anything wrong with this episode's plot since everyone's reactions were understandable and everything made sense. The episode was just lukewarm, for some reason. Maybe I'm just not invested into the teacher drama as much as I was with some of the things I liked in previous episodes. |
