Definitely the best part of the final season so far, though the constant self pity talk became a little irritable, I get it, they've been over this so many times, definitely milked for max feels. Plus there's too many quick cuts in the ODM animation, previous seasons gave you a better sense and feel as to what you were watching.

That was incredible. I was very impressed with the animation. I feel it's the best work MAPPA has done for AOT up to this point.

I was surprised with this being one hour and the story finally arriving at the final battle. With the manga being over I've been out of the AOT news loop and didn't follow any news leading into this season other than learning last week that they were going to split these final episodes into two mini-seasons. I didn't put much thought into how little they had to cover from the end of last season to the story's ending so them getting to Eren already was honestly a shock.

Anyway, hopefully the remaining episode will look as beautiful as this one did.

What is freedom? To be free from boundaries to do anything? To be free of pain and sufferings? Every perspective tells a different truth. When two views of freedom clash thus be war.

Best adaptation to the thrills of the manga. Capturing every characters persona that comes true in their final moments.
When someone asks me why I like anime, I'd say Just Because.

Yeah they are unbearably cringe. Not only that but we see this forced romance moments after watching a horrific genocide. Lmfao.

Bruh, let them be. People fall in love, I don't think it makes the show any worse for it. It just makes it more realistic in my opinion. I think it adds to  the story that we get to see the different sides of the characters. Ain't nothing wrong with more character development, it what makes you more vested in the characters and the outcome.

Yeah it’s very realistic to fall in love with the guy you barely had scenes with (oh but he was creeping on you for 4 years tho!), and it’s even more realistic to fall in love with the person who used to kill your friends and would do it again!

Peak fiction has finally returned for the second to last time. What a ride it was. From the brutal opening to Hange's spectacular sacrifice and of course the tease of the final battle to come this episode really had everything. If only it could last forever.

I'm almost lost for words and my feelings are all over the place. What an exceptional experience.

Starting with the inner monologue of Eren, who was already aware about what would happen to everything surrounding him to the horrific extend the Rumbling has taken. The emotions and feelings Kaji Yuuki conveys through his role as Eren never fail to surprise me.

This was the best example that there's almost no escape before the Rumbling. What a brutal sight when the two children were not only injured or even killed by the rubble of the house, but then even crushed under the massive Titan onslaught afterwards.

Why do people act as if the romance between Armin and Annie is forced? Have you even watched the previous seasons? Armin has always had a thing for Annie, otherwise he certainly wouldn't have been visiting and talking to her all those times, when she seemed trapped in the crystal. With the world on the brink, I also see no problem why Armin shouldn't confess his love to her. It's not as if they had anything better to do in that specific moment on the ship.

Good thing I brought tissues beforehand, because the Hange scene definitely got me crying, especially with Levi's words towards her before she went off to stall the Rumbling. She was there from the very beginning and so it just felt unreal seeing her go. She went out in an breathtaking way. The ODM gear animation during this part was magnificent and the OST choice superb. RIP on of the best characters in this show o7

What a powerful moment on the plane. The beginnings were made with the last season, but here it was even clearer that everyone present had a much better understanding for the other. I don't want to sugarcoat things because we're all aware of the heinous things committed by everyone on board. Still, this is the best proof that people can change. With the brainstorming on how they could possibly stop Eren and since Eren was also following this conversation, Armin and Co. were suddenly transported to the paths. Even with their efforts to talk Eren out of further genocide, they subsequently found out that a discussion with him was pointless.

In order to obtain freedom, he must take freedom from the world, at least according to his way of thinking. This is also why Eren, even if he could, doesn't take control of Armin and the other titan holders. He doesn't want to act in the same way the world did with Eldians. Armin and the rest are free to protect the freedom of the world. With both sides unyielding convictions, a fight has now become inevitable. I'm not quite sure yet what exactly Falco's dream means, but I sincerely hope it will be of some help.

I didn't expect to see the families of Reiner, Falco, Gaby and even Annie's father. It wasn't a bad idea at all to take the train to Fort Salta and then escape the rumbling in an airship. Unfortunately for them, any airships were on their way to stop the rumbling with bombs, which pretty much backfired. While it may be late and the Rumbling may be doing its part, it's still nice to see everyone showing remorse and how wrong they were in seeing the people of Paradise as devils.

And so the probably last fight has now begun. Reiner's transformation, which we could already enjoy in the trailer, looked fantastic. In general, I'm extremely excited to see how this fight and Attack on Titan itself will unfold. Armin is absolutely right. If they drag him out of there, in what way is Eren still free?

All in all and as already mentioned before, a magnificent experience that I wouldn't want to miss. Animation, particularly of the Rumbling Titans and the Hange ODM Gear scene, looked insanely good. OST's perfectly chosen as always and I hardly need to mention a word about the voice actors, since they've been doing a brilliant job in every of the past seasons and this was no exception.

See you all in a couple of months for the big finale. (I'm still in shock that it's actually ending)

I agree with you. Man it was a hell of a 1 hr. cinematic viewing experience! I could not have worded it any better than you did. I agree with just about all of what you said. I also thought the romance scene with Armin and Annie was just fine. People need to chill with hating on it, like let them be! People fall in love all the time and love doesn't always make sense. However like you said, I thought it was somewhat built up throughout the show and had reason to it. I also thought it added more to the characters to have more development and see some different sides to them.

It was also really cool to see how the world was reacting to it and also how all the characters have come so far and how much they've grown since the start. They realize that they are not at all perfect and have done many things that were bad and wrong as well. It was nice that they could all step into each other's shoes for a moment and think from the other character's perspectives. It definitely felt more real and humane to see that side of them. I thought it was also kind of neat how Annie chose not to go along with them to help with their plan, as it mirrors reality a bit more in therespect that not everyone agrees or is on the same page about what should be done about something.

Also maybe they are right to try to stop Eren, as committing mass genocide is probably not the best solution to their problems. Even it's all just Eldians left, eventually after enough time goes by, divisions and future wars will still be bound to happen with humanity. That's just what people do... So to think that Eren is fixing the problem once and for all is just unrealistic. If anything it's only creating peace for a period of time.

My only compliant is I think their OST selection could have been a bit better as they could have used some of the more awesome OSTs that we've come to know and love throughout the series. But other than that, I thought the whole thing was phenomenal and I can't wait to see the final part to end the series coming in the Fall!

The scene of Armin x Annie felt out of place because the tone shift. Atleast try to put it somewhere else, it’s not that hard.

Wow, was that incredible. Way better than Part 2. Decent CGI too. Made the Titans look like a force of nature which they indeed are, except for that one scene of a Colossal Titan falling down the mountain in the middle of a serious scene. The Fall Titan indeed.

RIP Hange. Didn't cry though. She went out in a blaze of glory(quite literally) and is now free from her burdens(also quite literally). Didn't like the sound track that played when she fought the titans though. Felt a bit off.

In other news, the title of the r/anime discussion thread is possibly one of the greatest ever - Shingeki no Kyojin: The Final Season • Attack on Titan Final Season THE FINAL CHAPTERS - Special Episode 1.

Hange death hit deep.
Majority of the episode felt kinda boring to me, I was almost falling asleep. The animation didn't do it for me, I still think MAPPA should have approached the series another way (god those faces are even worse than Part 2).
I know how destructive the Rumbling is, but I can't take it seriously when the titans looks like puppets and are so stupid they fall on each other or down a mountain. That scene honestly had me rolling, had to watch it two times.
Plus, I was thinking: how large can the Rumbling be? I mean, there must be an end to it on the sides, so can't people just try to reach the end of it to avoid being stomped?

Annie-Armin scene felt so fricking forced. Honestly, everything related to Annie feels forced, she is just a boring and annoying character everyone in the Survey Corp started caring for without a reason.
Yes Annie, you killed our friends and shut yourself in a stone in order to not tell us the truth about the world (which could have helped a lot), and now you don't even want to help us stop what your people started, but sure, "take care of yourself!".
Reiner became boring too but at least he has the guts to do what it takes, respect.

Also, Levi with only two fingers on one hand, one eye and half face buried but still willing to fight. That goblin is unstoppable. And I felt really both sad and proud when he finally said the Survey Corp motto to Hange. Now he really did lost all of his dear ones...

and yeah, classic mopper- 'wait till fall for cour 2' bitch stop milking the show already

Bruh, I don't think you realize how long it takes to make animation and just how much goes into it. It's not that they are milking it, they are likely going as fast as they possibly can.

You should be thankful if it takes longer so you can get a better quality viewing experience with the finished product. You just gotta have more patience bruh.
bro tbh I don't even wanna watch this shit

what I meant was MAPPA could have released both the parts in Fall instead of dividing it, like they are doing ever since they got their hands on snk

This was really well done. I'm on the record here a saying that I'm not the biggest fan of the way Isayama took the story after they reached the sea, but seeing this animated and voiced with these levels of quality increased my appreciation of it. Very compelling watch.

A lot of regret, conflicting sentiments and Eren's bullshit (imo) idea of freedom in this 1-hour part 1 of part 3 special for what might be the final season of the series. I thought it was good, probably better in some ways to the last two parts in terms of animation and direction, but worse in its story overall particularly because I can't understand Eren at all.

Hange's sacrifice has to be the highlight of the episode for me. She was among the best female characters the show had (I don't wanna bring the Mikasa debate but... yeah). The way she was always pursuing knowledge and just kept crawling back from death with new ideas made our understanding of the world broader, that is until her time finally came. Even with all the contradictions to what she initially thought she knew, she took responsibility and acted correspondingly. Yes, she does have some creepy and weird quirks, but compared to the rest that's ok.

On the other end, the "discussion" they had with Eren felt pointless as they will most probably end up talking anyway. These constant ideas about freedom and humanity and whatever, what's the point of any of that if by the end the guy just keeps killing people, most of which have nothing to do with the conflict at all. The genocidal freak that for some is a character study is to me someone that shows us what happens when you're able to stop a monster properly. The damage has been done already.

In any case, I only hope that by the end they don't just forgive him with a pat in the back.

PS: The Armin-Annie ship is also whatever, I didn't get much chemistry from this episode, but considering the context, that's fine.

The quality of this episode only further demonstrates that MAPPA weren't given enough time to animate the previous 28 episodes, especially S4P1, and it's a bloody shame, because you couple the storytelling ability of Isayama with this quality of output from Hayashi and his team and you get something very special.

The first 10-15 minutes showing the destruction and death caused by the Rumbling and the juxtaposition of Eren's freedom monologue was some of the most harrowing, haunting anime I've seen.

This was comfortably the best looking, best directed series of episodes by MAPPA and rivals anything WiT put out.
