I'm sure if this was standalone for someone new getting into the very concept of Trigun, they would enjoy Trigun Stampede.

I tried my very best to really get on board with the direction of Trigun Stampede, but it's missing a lot of things that made the original Trigun so special to me. They moved too fast in the original episode, acting as if we didn't show Vash do some insane stunt immediately, the show would get canned. There's no delayed gratitude for characters eventually finding out that this guy really is the Humanoid Typhoon. All the characters are on the same page as soon as the first episode ends.

A huge character plot for Vash was how he continued to serve people regardless how they felt about the Humanoid Typhoon, however that is completely jumped when everyday normal civilians just casually get along with him as they do in this. There was a catharsis when people found out that someone deemed to have done so many terrible acts to have a 6,000,000 bounty on his head just happens to be a person with a heart for people. Nope, in Stampede, there's none of that available. All the civilians already know the Humanoid Typhoon is secretly a pretty chill guy. There's no tension between Vash and everyday people.

His pacifism is poorly portrayed--the entirety of Trigun is leveraged off of Vash's pacifistic idealism in a world where cold truth hardships are the norm. However, he's not being forced to put his pacifism on the line. His good deeds are just stated and observed by other characters, not shown through actions done. Meryl just states "He's trying to keep everyone safe" for a sentence and lets the audience assume that's what he's doing.

The music also throws me off as well. The opening theme does NOT capture the spirit of Trigun, nor does the over-produced and mixed orchestral soundtrack. The rustic, almost indie 'low budget' OST of the original captured the down-to-earth, survival through every day life feel where everyone doesn't have much but makes the most of it. The new OST makes me want to go on an adventure without a care in the world, which does not reflect the world of Trigun at all.

Millie got tossed for no good reason. I don't know why, she's just as iconic to Trigun as everyone every other character.

I'm not a stickler about CGI, it's done fantastically well here. I was excited that Trigun was being done in 3D, actually.

All I can say is that there is a lack of respect for the intellectual property Orange has their hands on and a lack of maturity in the directors and writers in this production. I know it's a reboot of the series rather than a remake, and I can't expect nor do I want a carbon-copy adaptation, but it feels like they missed all the details that made Trigun feel like Trigun.

Perhaps the directors have something else in mind. Maybe my expectations are getting in the way, and the directors just want to take the concept of Trigun and use it to tell a whole different story and lesson to what the original Trigun told. We still have a whole season to pull through, let's hope what we have in store can be enjoyable as it is even if it is different.

Dude you just completely nailed so many things that I had a problem with. Nicely stated.

I'm starting to believe that you people are either blind or just extremely and willingly ignorant, because I have no idea how anybody can come on this website and objectively say that the CG in this is even remotely bad....You all make me sick lol

But anyway, I'm coming for everyone who says nonsense like you two about the CGI because this was fucking amazing.....Studio Orange are known for CGI and somehow they have perfected it and given us bangers after bangers with it, and Trigun is definitely apart of that list now
Preach, brother. People with this opinion should just go back and watch the old stuff, and never comment on anything new, as they're just holding anime back from evolving, as all things should.

There was nothing wrong with cel animation. You are allowed to prefer the newer style, but I wouldn't call it an evolution just because it's faster and newer. It's just different.

Starting off very well with the art style in bringing a fresh 3D look to the Renewed Trigun World.

Story starts off with drama and ends in a mystery with the main character, Vash , fearing an antagonist he know all too well.

Animation is a top notch especially the fight scene. The characters are well made and the new Vash design looks incredible.

I enjoyed it and looking forward to more.

Hey man, I was just telling it how it is.  It's up to you to get upset that you don't actually have a point.  It's like you need everything to be Batman V Superman when everyone came to watch Ant Man and the Wasp.

As an old hardcore Trigun fan, I'm more on the positive side for this one, enjoyed it quite a bit.

However, as it was kinda executed like "ok most people knows Trigun so we will throw all endgame shit right in the first ep" (revealing Knives, Seeds, Rem, removing the characters uncertainty on Vash identity, etc.), I'm just a bit afraid it will undermine a bit the Batman-like no-kill every-human-is-a-lovable-kid policy of Vash as well as its duality with his silliness because in the original it was quite polished by how all those things were progressively revealed.

Just as @Farabeuf said

Farabeuf said:

To be honest it's pretty thin. But it's just one episode. It took dozens of episodes in the original before we got a good take on Vash.

Where have I ever said that its seriousness (or lack thereof), or literally anything beyond the dog water visual style is bad in the current or previous adaptation? I liked the humour of the original adaptation, and I don't mind it in the new adaptation either. The only issue I have now is the CGI on the same level as Midhouse did in Overlord 3. The overexaggerated poses in the original adaptation worked well because they could just draw him looking like the coyote from Road Runner, and trying to do the same with 3DCG just does not translate well at all. But hey you have the same reading comprehension as an score booster on MAL, so just go make 15 more accounts because your beloved animes are dogshit and you can't stand that they have the rating they should have.

This was kind of a mixture of bitter and sweet depending on how I look at it. Is it a reimagining of the original series? If yes, good for them for having the confidence to change story tidbits, otherwise, this is completely an utterly shameless flop.

Speaking about the character design, call it nostalgia, but I'll always prefer Vash's original design, not that this one is bad, it goes well with the flat colors. One thing that bothered me however is the decision about showing the spaceship plot lie first thing in the first episode. Part of what I adored about the original series was how mysterious and how little we knew across the story hint after hint until w put everything together and realise the origin of Vash, I felt that the way they handled it here took away so much suspense and worth of the mystery that this show had an upper hand at.

I wish they don't cut off Milly or Wolfwood.

First episode was alright... Animation was fine, certain parts obviously looked great while others were a little questionable.

The story wasn't bad, however most of the story changes felt like they took away from the show. It honestly felt like it was written solely for fans of the original series/manga, which is fun and I can totally dig that, but I don't think that bodes well for the show overall.

Chosing to start immediately with the back story, while also having the supporting characters immediately get clued into who Vash is, were both poor decisions. The intro to the original story was far more attention grabbing and fun to follow. The mystery of the backstory was one of the key things that kept me hooked on the manga. In this adaptation if kind of feels like they gave most of the story away already, or will very soon.

Replacing Milly might actually prove to be a good decision. Having the two insurers bounce off each other, while fun, doesn't really serve much of a story purpose. That said, the new character who's replacing her felt rather forced. He was too keyed into the main story to feel natural, almost like one of those characters that's just dropped in to dump some exposition. This new character combined with their change in profession to journalists makes me think this story will be far more grounded and serious. Not sure how that will pan out, too early to call. It also feels like a rather odd decision giving Vash's more childish character redesign.

One big negative is that this episode failed to capture the Wild West setting very well. There were a few scenes where I got that vibe, but they were waaayyyy too far and few in between. The unique Wild West-like setting is one of the most distinct things about the story, but this episode leaned too hard into the sci-fi.

I don't want to make too many stylistic comparisons to the original anime, but that one did an exceptional job at capturing the feel of the manga. The OST was great for it's time, and very well themed. This one really lacked that same delivery. I hope it gets better in future episodes, but that alone could really drag this show down.

All of that said, I did have a great time watching it as a fan of the manga and anime. I don't think I would have enjoyed it nearly as much if this was a first time watch, and I do think the pacing was a little slow. Most of what I said above is from the perspective of "is this a good show?" not the perspective of "would a Trigun fan like this show?". Certainly, it carries the risk of butchering the story, but the possibility of a good new story is a very appealing thought. It's certainly a big risk on their part - not adapting a story that is already proven to be good. I hope it pays off and things pick up from here!

So this is what it feels like if hollywood would be remaking a beloved manga/anime series.. Looks awesome, but lacks any kind of substance. Horrible directorial and editorial choices as well as bad writing. The original was a near perfect masterpiece so if you reinvent that, you better deliver a perfect 10/10.

Hm. This was better than I expected. The animation is good, despite these character designs.

They go right away with the backstory, might be interesting, but I'm not sure. Vash is still Vash, the fight was ridiculous as ever.

Meryl isn't as annoying as she was in the original version, but that Roberto guy, why is he here again? ...

So far it wasn't really bad to warrant dropping, but I still have mixed feelings.

The animation is lacking, it has that overly CG feel to it. Way worse than the animation quality of the original. The story definitely has a different feel to it. I suspect the story will be better than the original but we will see. I like the character design of this Vash more than the original though despite the poor animation quality.

It feels more like cyberpunk than wildwest. Wich is ....good? ....bad?

Vash the stampede was rugged, dry. The atmosphere really felt like you were in a desert.
Now the characters are so... clean...

The animations are quite good and they display the characters feelings very well, but i just can not get over the cleanliness of it all.

For me this gets a indulgent 6/10.

I really enjoyed the first episode a lot, it doesn't have that "dirty" look (in a good way) that traditional animation gives, but Studio Orange never disappoints, the animation is quite fluid and the facial expressions are fantastic, the part where Meryl gets all fluster reminded me a lot of Phos from Land of the Loustrous, excellent first episode.

this was honestly terrible. revealing the entirety of vash's backstory, revealing knives and rem right away... Just a coplete destruction of any dramatic tension and mystery that the original had. I don't care for the CGI but its not bad. Just sad that this is what anime is now, you're constantly told how to feel, nothing is questioned and you're not left pondering anything.

This is just doing the complete opposite of "show, don't tell" there was 0 reason for vash and co to go to a plant this early, or for plants to be explained at all.

Also is millie just gone?

This show feels like Trigun was mixed with mid tier animation with the feel of the original Disney Frozen movie as 3d models. It looks choppy and dull, and really disappoints me already with the changed story. Vash looks like the "that's bussin ong fr fr" guy memes and Meryl looks like a low end Vtuber. story is okay i guess, just not the original that I remember. I will still watch but this is kinda weird. Plus a .22 long rifle round destroys a foot wide stone, seems legit.

Trigun is back with a fresh new look! Right away, we're thrown into the brother stuff and finding out they're special kids. It's clear the creators are having a blast experimenting with the new visual design techniques. The style looks super clean. Meryl's sidekick looks different and she is younger now, and it was cool to see a detailed sketch of Vash on the wanted poster. With this new method, the characters always look in proportion, even when they're changing shape to show emotion like in traditional anime. The episode was fun, but I'm wondering why they're diving straight into the brother stuff so quickly.

But the beginning is literally the same start as "Gundam Witch" where the ship/home is destroyed and the kid(s) escapes. (tho it's not that different from the "original's start")

TBH, this whole series' 3D art-style reminds me of what they use for Movies.

It's not bad really, pretty interesting to watch.

Oof. I'll admit that I am extremely biased here because the original Trigun anime is one of my all-time favorites, but I absolutely hated this episode and I'm honestly not looking forward to watching any more of this reboot. I don't mind the animation all that much, it's not my cup of tea but it's fine, even great in some instances. The music was pretty decent too. But everything else... I don't know. I don't understand why they got rid of Milly. Meryl is lackluster. And Vash isn't funny at all. It just didn't feel like Trigun to me. This is more like Wish brand Trigun.

the only reason this has a 7.36 score is because it's rated by zoomers, none of them have seen the original, they see edgerunners type clothing and a fancy fight scene off the bat, the storybuilding is hamfisted, some characters are just suddenly completely different minutes after introduction for no other reason than trying to go for "how much nonsense can we add to this?", no pacing to the narrative, unnecessary pre-empting the story with lore because otherwise zoomers get confused, no atmosphere to take in, it's just either dialog or jamming visuals down your throat

My original comment has been edited to remove remarks I made regarding differences between the original anime and this new one. I have since learned that the original was something like 2/3 "filler". With that knowledge, it invalidated some of the criticism/concerns I had about the new anime.

FWIW, I'm currently on episode 9 and I've started to really enjoy Stampede the last several episodes. It's certainly different than the original, but the underlying story is similarly compelling.

------------------------------------------------

i wasn't sure what i'd think of the animation style and Vash's character design being different than the original. but it's actually fine. i don't mind at all. i think i'm already used to it after just this one episode

and omg is it great to have the o.g. English voice actor back for Vash!

the original series was/is one of my all-time favorite anime. so we'll see how this new one goes.

The first thing this anime does is something unthinkable and although I haven't seen the original 1990s one. This one looks and feels very modern. The animation is very great and the characters are good too. The expressions are something that are really expressive and gives it an almost 2D feel to it. The opening of the anime is just pure moody type and I love it.
