So, now that my school district blocked the anime site I use (common district L), I tried to use Crunchyroll to watch Devil May Cry...only to find out they made everything Premium. What the hell is up with Crunchyroll? |

They merged with Funimation's streaming service, so they have most of everything Funimation has. Everything that was previously on Crunchyroll before the merger should still be available for free, but everything added from Funimation and any new anime added in general to Crunchyroll requires premium. |

Me who almost don't have access to legal anime cause they don't make Polish subs [Yeah english subs are available but why would I pay for English ones if I am living in Poland?]: "Oh no! Anyway." Torrents are safe, multiple sites which has English subs/Polish subs [as that's the only websites I've visited so far] are almost completely safe, you just need an adblock and that's all you need... |

I wasn't aware of the ad revenue thing dropping, but I do know that it's after the merger. The way I see it, none of their (direct) competitors now offer free anime, so.. I have been using Funimation lately to watch free stuff, so just a warning. Usually, it goes to premium if it moves to Crunchyroll, so if you find something that's free, you might get interrupted in the middle of watching. Also, shows which have had new seasons since Spring might be free up until that latest season. |

Sub isn't that expensive, they even dropped the price in most countries and payment isn't in dollars for them anymore, but country's currency. For me, the problem lies in anime availability, especially if you're not from US or some big European country. |

The official statement, as of 9-23-22: Crunchyroll continues to make more than 1,000 hours of anime available for free through our advertiser-supported tier. Select episodes of our most popular anime, prior to the current season, are still available to watch for free with ads. Similarly, we do make new content available for free with ads via our Seasonal Samplers, launched at the beginning of each anime season. AVOD content will rotate and refresh regularly, sometimes returning for stunts, special promotions and commemorative occasions. Along with the cratering ad rates mentioned elsewhere in the thread, I'd imagine CR got tired of having their bandwidth sapped by AdBlock moochers. tchitchouan said: When there's no competition, the status quo becomes the de facto monopoly. Yet a monopoly is exactly what anime viewers have wanted, given all the "anime's too split up on legal sites, I don't want to pay for multiple subscriptions" complaints. MadanielFL said: Also I find funny how some people get mad at how Crunchyroll pay VAs and translators, when I mostly see people attacking these VAs and translators for being horrible "woke SJWs"... Don't forget all the crocodile tears shed for underpaid CR translators, even as those same viewers turn around and watch pirated versions that use CR's translations without paying the translators at all. ryo-san said: Lmao there are 100s of pirate websites that provide more content than crunchyroll and these foolish people wanna pay for anime? Pay me instead haha, I'll DM you the links.. Wow, amazing how easy it is for pirate sites to provide more content when they don't have to pay for the rights or the translations/dubs for that content. But you'd better hope these "foolish" people continue paying for anime -- not only do international sales provide a substantial percentage of the anime industry's revenue, the pirate sites use the translations from CR or whoever has the license. So if those distributors go out of business, there's no more translations to steal. Who is more foolish: the fool, or the fool who follows him? |

(not just) itt: Crunchyroll shills and forever pirates duking it out in a never-ending brawl. someone should make an anime adaptation. me: watches anime without subs on official platforms from Japanese providers. ok, that's a lie. I also use Hulu, which doesn't let you disable subs. i also get to see Japanese ads, which, from the perspective of someone interested in the language, is actually a bonus. edit: btw Devil May Cry is on Hulu. maybe i'll give it a watch. edit 2: theme: gore. nevermind, gore is not my thing. |

One would watch Chainsaw Man on Crunchyroll or Chainsaw Man on Netflix. Not a monopoly. We used to have some form of this in the past. They also have a merch store which is one of the easiest ways for many western anime fans to get merchandise for their favorite series, plus they're owned by Sony now. The idea that they're some small indie company that's struggling to keep the lights on is laughable.they have to make money to keep the lights on somehow, they already barely pay staff enough as it is. Anyway, fuck Crunchyroll. (Not that I care much about the Mob Psycho dub, since I watched seasons 1 and 2 subbed and haven't started watching season 3 yet, but it's the idea that they recast a voice actor for no reason other than the fact that he's in a union that bothers me) I feel 110% confident in claiming that the only money that they ever put into "supporting the industry" is the licensing fees they pay to get anime on their platform. |

The only good ones I know of are Tower of God and God of Highschool, the latter of which apparently butchered its source material, so it's only good from an anime-only point of view. That aside, they only do that so that they can have some exclusive content on their platform, so it's really not that different than paying for licensing fees. If they didn't do it, someone else (probably Netflix) would've. |

Anyway, fuck Crunchyroll. They claim to be "supporting the anime industry" by "giving back to the anime studios", but they barely even pay their own translators and the voice actors for their dubs, and literally had to recast Shigeo in Mob Psycho 100 season 3 because they weren't even willing to have a meeting with the union that represented his previous VA. And I doubt that there are actually hundreds of these Crunchyroll originals, though that could just be because I haven't heard of many. The "Crunchyroll Originals" brand only started in 2020, but Crunchyroll had already started co-producing shows all the way back in 2015. You talk about quality but some of these shows are actually pretty highly rated, like Odd Taxi, Sora Yori, Laid-Back Camp, Classroom of the Elite, and the most popular of them all, Shield Hero. I could also talk about anime co-produced by Funimation which would include Fruits Basket and Fire Force. |

I thought they just did the dub) |

why wouldn't you pay for a service? like every streaming service costs money. you gotta pay the price to be a premium weeb ...or illegally stream but i think it is better to pay the platforms that support the shows |

I think there's a fundamental misunderstanding here. VPNs are perfectly legal, at least in the US, Canada, France, Germany, etc. The anime streaming providers only have the licensing rights to offer anime on their region, hence the region lock. It's not so much that you're breaking a terms of service, but rather that the streaming providers aren't enforcing the terms in their license agreement in a strict manner. However you feel about using VPN for watching anime on official sources, it is still a way of supporting the anime industry by watching ads. |
You can buy lossless digital music from your favorite Japanese artists on https://ototoy.jp/. The songs are all DRM-free and you can re-download your purchased albums as you wish. Show your support to your favorite artist if you can! ps. if you are looking for Japanese albums, you have to search it in Japanese (not romaji). Just copy and paste the name. For those who want to learn Japanese through anime Resources for learning the language |

With the amount of ways you can watch anime for free nowadays there's no reason to waste your money. https://twitter.com/BenjaminDiskin/status/1550466647986647041?s=20&t=eHM4N_Wf2o-KNG8Ac0EFCA Also I find funny how some people get mad at how Crunchyroll pay VAs and translators, when I mostly see people attacking these VAs and translators for being horrible "woke SJWs"... i think when people complain about inaccuracies, they are mostly referring to the dubs- hence the argument often made in favor of subs over dubs. translation isn’t an exact science and different people translate the same dialogue slightly differently. Specially becasue some of them give interviews saying they would like to see more female representation in shounen, and then everyone in twitter gets mad about it. I mean, personally, Funimation's VA's are mostly just all toxic assholes. As for the other dubs like the spanish and german dubs, i just don't care because i don't speak those languages and the site would be fine without them. Like the one who gave an interview saying she would like to see more female representation in shounen. That was just her opinion, but right wing anitwt users thought that was the most offensive thing ever and that she was trying to "westernize" anime, and a bunch of people were saying stuff like "this is why I pirate anime" https://twitter.com/BoundingComics/status/1510042345009516548?s=20&t=GhloPjAs8Ba-ymGrCyyPzQ And then it just comes off to me as ironic when the same people will go use the treatment of VAs and translators as a justification for piracy, when these people don't really care about them at all. Ah yes, "representation". That word used to mean something before the SJWs actually coopted it. Nowadays all they want is everyone to be alphabet, with hetero people dying horrible deaths. So no, there is a very clear political agenda, and I don't want to even get into the cesspool that is VA drama (stuff like KickVic, the large harrassmwnt campaigns started on Twitter, etc.) |

Zalis said: The official statement, as of 9-23-22: Crunchyroll continues to make more than 1,000 hours of anime available for free through our advertiser-supported tier. Yet suddenly with the CR/Funi merger, having everything too centralized is considered problematic. I've no problem with understanding Japanese..I'd watch them raw on nyaa. Don't think everyone is like you, only obsessing with money.. I bet you also pay women on onlyfans |

So if you hate these VAs so much then why are pirates using Crunchyroll’s treatment of them as a justification for piracy? All she did was giver her opinion, it’s not like she is calling for the complete rewritten of shounen anime. But of course right wing anitwt users think emotionally rather then rationally. |
