Tough between Mushoku Tensei and 86, but I give it to 86. The war story is super interesting, and the drama in the show is unmatched. MT was awesome as well, and has been a great show that I can't wait to watch more of

I liked 'Heion Sedai Idaten-Tachi' a lot, it's just your fair share of OP characters fighting but said interesting things about the formula itself. There's a lot of collateral damage and action-packed scenes. The author made the story for Interspecies Reviewers and it shows, some scenes read like a doujinshi, it was surprising to see it go as far as it did with some story elements and that might be a turnoff for a lot of people.

My second place is 'World Trigger 2nd Season', it got me to like a series I previously disliked. The tournament arc, that is, most of the show is enjoyable to watch. It's like watching a soccer match or any other sport. The Trion system has really come to fruition and the show just finds more ways to be creative. I can't call the characters all that original but they do work well for the setting, the cast is getting too bloated in terms of how many characters keep getting introduced. Excited for the 3rd season!

It has been a great year for the anime industry, there are so many quality animes that for me it makes the choice difficult. But my vote would be between these three Mushoku Tensei, Odd Taxi and Shingeki no Kyojin: The Final Season. For me it was the ones I enjoyed the most, but if I had to choose one I would pick Mushoku Tensei.

Tough decision between To Your Eternity and Odd Taxi. But I guess I'll go with the former since that one left a bigger emotional impact.

Edit: now that I voted, I'm shocked to see Fumetsu not even getting 1% of the votes. I thought it was going to be one of the most voted ones and turns out I couldn't be more wrong.

I know, I guess not enough people watched it. But the story telling was masterpiece, the characters are just written so well and there's not a boring part of the anime. Emotion put into that anime surpasses everything else that came out, you can really tell they made sure every character had an emotional connection to the audience and that's extremely rare for anime to do that, usually you see this in disney movies but I don't see it much in anime.

Gotta go Mushoku Tensei. Not only the biggest surprise for me (I usually get dissuaded by excess hype), but man, it was a different experience from every other isekai out there. Loved it.

Gotta throw in Moriarty the Patriot too, what a masterpiece of an anime. So underappreciated, when it's so much more than just another Sherlock Holmes adaptation.

Horimiya was my favourite romance anime of the year just because of the chill atmosphere and character design. Really well-written characters. Out of what I've watched, I'd add on Reincarnated as a Slime S2, To Your Eternity (which was yet another surprise), Re:zero S2 and Idaten. From what I've yet to finish watching, Ousama Ranking is great so far, everyone who watched 86 seems to have loved it and AOT got another season, so the fanbase is gonna carry that one.

Yeah, it was one of the biggest surprises of the year for me. It looked way too slow-paced at the start (and that can work against a show reaaaal quick) but as the show goes one you sort of realise that the pace works well for what it's trying to do. The way they introduced each character and built up the relationship between them and Fushi before tearing it all down was masterful. Made you feel for the MC in a way a generic shounen or something like MHA can only hope to do.

Finally, someone who appreciates Idaten for all its gory glory. It's one of those shows you think is absolutely mid from the rating on MAL, but turns out to be much deeper and more amazing (in a possibly mentally insane way) than you thought.

Of course I didn't watch all the 2021 anime but the one that surprised me the most was Yuukoku no Moriarty 2nd Season. It was unexpectedly good.
I feel like a lot of people might have missed this gem this year. Mostly because we had a lot of big names and manga adaptation that came this year.

So yeah watch Moriarty. Both seasons are good but I feel like the action and story gets better in the second season. I really liked all the different dynamics between all the characters and its been a while since I enjoyed an anime where the main character is a "villain". And for the yaoi enjoyers, you could say that Sherly and Moriarty are also pretty hot (best ship of this year imo). The action and the "no-u" cards made me somehow feel like i was sometimes watching a Jojo episode (more like season 1 and 2).

This man is speaking the truth ヽ(^o^)丿

I also enjoyed Mushoku Tensei, not my favorite isekai yet but it was really really good in terms of quality (perhaps not that hard when you look at other isekais).
But the main character made me sometimes uncomfortable with how creepy he was sometimes. It felt really weird knowing that pervy Rudy was an old dude inside. Sex jokes in anime are awfully unfunny (with the exeption of some shows) and I don't know why tbey're a recurring cliché.
This time it felt like it wasn't really a joke and more like a constant character trait wich made it even worse.
But exept that it was a good show (when Rudy isn't a creep) with quality animation and story. I stan Ruijerd and simp Ghislaine.

Other animes this year that I've watched:
- Nagatoro. The story was more sweet than I thought it would be and this made me happy.

- Both Slime Isekai and Re:Zero, I literally can't get enough of them. It's always entertaining to see Rimuru and his band grow into something bigger and more impressive with each arcs. Proof that not all OP characters are bad. Also very entertainting to see Subaru going beyond the limit everytimes just to get absolutely destroyed in the next arc.

- Komi-San was alright. I'm a bit disappointed because it was hyped as much as Nagatoro (lots of memes before the anime adaptation) but the story and characters revealed themselves to be pretty weak compared to Nagatoro.

- Redo of Healer was brought up a lot this year with its bit of contoversy. Turns out this "anime" was just garbage and bait. I watched the uncensored version and honestly it seems like the show doesn't know if it wants to be an anime or an hentai. Turns out it sucks at being both. There's nothing that saves this anime. It's like watching porn but only the akward part like the conversations and without the actual sex. The show is awfully boring and honestly I couldn't wank to to a single scene because there was real sex scene. All you see is the guy's butt and close-up boob moving back and forth. No D, no P, no B ... Nothing !
I feel like the show would have done much better if it sold itself as an actual hentai and made real scenes. (They had the means to do something really good honeslty).
You're honestly better off watching something else like Rance: 01 wich I actually recommand.

- Dr: Stone s2 was hella boring compared to season 1. There was an enormous build-up for this season. I expected an explosion only to get what was like the effect of a fart in a bathtub.

- I won't speak about Promised Neverland and Wonder Egg Priority, those two can fuck off.

- Mieruko-chan was cool. Didn't expect a lot of it but it was entertaining, it seems like a lot of interesting things will happen in season 2.

- So I'm a Spider, So what ? Ahem, I have a weird love-hate relationship with this anime. I've never an anime that can be as both awesome and awful at the same time. Kumoko's personality makes up for the entire show. Just skip the classmates part, exept the final battle it was pretty funny to see those dicks getting absolutely destroyed. Also ignore the animation and trash CGI, otherwise you're going to have a bad time.

- Heion Sedai Idaten-Tachi was good. Nothing much to say about it. Just watch it in the mean time if you're waiting for the next Konosuba.

Also watch Blue Period but this post is getting way too long and there's no way someone is going to read all of it.

Yes, finally, another lad who appreciates Yukoku no Moriarty. We're a rare breed not gonna lie.

But in response to the Mushoku Tensei stuff, I don't really think it was as much a joke as a testament to his flaw as character (I mean on purpose ofc). I thought the uncomfortableness it brought added to the anime's kind of dark undertone, basically how somebody shut off from society wouldn't know how to act around people. If it was humour though, that would've been pathetic. The moral ambiguity did lead to some discomfort while watching it at times, but I just thought the plot and the characters (except for, as you mentioned Rudy's pervy side) override that.

I share the same opinions about the shows that I've watched of the ones you've mentioned. Re:zero was a great step up and Slime keeps getting better. Komi-san was charming but the charm kinda wore off. I think it's just better in a manga format. Idk. TPN S2...screw them. After a masterpiece of a first season they go and do that. WITH AN INSANELY CATCHY OPENING TOO, WHAT A WASTE.

But I have to disagree about Blue Period. Disappointing. Such great material, but the pacing was weird and the animation for an anime about art really put me off, even though I actively tried to ignore it. The characters looked like robots.

The moral ambiguity did lead to some discomfort while watching it at times, but I just thought the plot and the characters (except for, as you mentioned Rudy's pervy side) overrides that.

Yeah him being pervy is definitely a character flaw. I hopes it get better because honestly I really really don't want to see him getting pervy with Sylphiette in the next season. But yeah, its definitely a geat show, I won't argue with that.

Blue Period didn't feel too off for me. And the pacing was alright for me. I don't know if there are mutliples arcs or if there will be later seasons but it made sense that the character was quickly accepted into school after only one season because it's probably only the start of a bigger story. It would have been worse to waste another season on this imo.

I think doing an animation about it is more fitiing, because it feels weird for a manga to speak about colors for a good part of it and only be drawn in black and white (one of the main reasons why I prefer european comics over japanese, I tend to skip mangas entirely and only watch tjhe anime).

I can somewhat understand what you're saying about the characters, some seem generics and other uninteresting. Definitely a weak point of this anime. The story with Ruijy felt out of place because the main character and him didn't seem to have spent a lot of time togheter. It felt a little bit forced.
But overall, I think it's an anime that did its job well. Perhaps because I didn't have a lot of expectations for it and binge watched it quickly.

I don't think the pacing should be faster either, that's kind of against the point of the series, like you mentioned, but I just felt like it burst into these moments of urgency out of nowhere at times. It seemed a bit erratic then, but looking back, it wasn't a major flaw.

By animation, I'm not referring to the character design or the art created in the show, no those were great. I'm talking about he movement and dynamics of the characters, as in specifically the "animation" aspect of it all. It just took a lot of the show's seriousness away for me. Like when Ryuji and Yatora took that crucial train ride to the beach. The scene of them painting naked portraits of themsleves was so insightful and I would've loved it if not for YATORA'S ARMS BEING DISLOCATED FROM HIS ELBOW OML I COULD NOT IGNORE IT FOR THE LIFE OF ME. There's this beautifully written epiphany and Yatora's forearms look like they're attached on some sort of slider and not a joint. Maybe I'm exaggerating, but it just felt so unnatural. And the dull colours too...I just always imagined an adaptation to have these vivid colours and fluid movements in the moments of introspection that basically make up the series. Again, that's why I prefer anime as a medium over manga too. They really could've used colours better, perhaps by increasing or decreasing their intensity according to the emotion portrayed, or by contrasting cooler colours with warmer colours to show Yatora's state of mind. Maybe I was too hopeful, but I really think stuff like that could've been used easily but wasn't.

As for the characters, well I don't hate them. I never really adored any of them like with idk, Tower of God (please don't raost me for liking ToG), but that's not what I love about Blue Period. Maybe you're right, they can be pretty dull and depressing at times. Then again, that contributes to the reflective tone of the series.

Oh okay that's what you meant by it. I didn't realise the default of animation LOL.
Also true that the artistic direction of the show was a bit generic for something about art. But the scene when he's painting or when they're showing art pieces are quite colorful.

PS: Tower of God is poop :)

Sadly I failed to keep up with the 2021 offerings, it seems I have much to catch up on. There are lots of appealing shows to choose from on the surface, I'm just hoping they deliver. Thus far my favorite entry of the year was JoJo's Part 6: Stone Ocean. I'll have to post an update after I catch up.

Fruits Basket the Finale for me. After the fantastic 2nd season, I was pretty hooked and wasn't expecting the last season to surpass it and also found the series' conclusion quite wholesome.

Glad to see that Fruits Basket is getting some attention.

2021 was a great year overall, and I really enjoyed quite a lot of new anime, and if I take into consideration the BD from movies that got released in 2021 but aired in 2020 (e.g Gintama the Final and Heaven's Feel 3) then this has to be one the best years we had since 2010

It's very difficult for me to choose my AOTY this year as I have potentially 3 AOTYs this year as opposed to just 1 or 2 the previous years. It's between Fruits Basket: The Final, Mushoku Tensei Part 2, and Re:Zero S2 P2.

Dragon Maid S2 would have probably been in there had I actually watched it. I plan on rewatching S1 soon before I get to that though.

There were a decent amount of good shows, but i was always extra hype to watch the latest episode of kingdom.

Holy jeez, i know people like Mushoku Tensei but aoty?
I like it too and all, but i feel like not enough has even happened in the story. Like the story is still really just getting started.

This year was really good overall, spring was probably the best season with gems such as OddTaxi, 86, Vivy and linkclick. and nagatoro.
However AOTY for me is Sonny Boy easily, basically saved the summer which was weaker.

My top 5 would be probably:
Sonny Boy
OddTaxi
Mushoku Tensei
Link Click
Re:Zero

Also shouting out quintessential quintuplets SS.

Ousama Ranking, vivy and Shadow House I haven't watched yet but I plan to

Fruits Basket the finale by far, what a conclusion to the story
Other contender are Mushoku Tensei and Horimiya, both were excellent.

but to be fair, I didn't watch many anime in 2021, the above 3 are the only 3 good anime I watched in 2021

Mushoku tensei for me. Maybe I am biased because I read the novels years ago but there is something about the world and characters that just draws me in. I remember dropping the manga and novels when I first tried it because I didn't like certain aspects. But after giving it a second chance it turned out to be one of my favourite stories. There is something special about the story that I cannot really explain.

Also Odd taxi deserves an honourable mention.

that said, Mushoku Tensei was amazing. I definitely felt like i was watching a classic being made. In a few years we'll look back at it see how far it has come. Definitely stood out to me.

altho this prolly doesn't look that good for me that someone made a throwaway account to comment this lol
