That documentary thing was sure interesting. Although I feel like some of it doesn't relate to the series. maybe I haven't figured that yet.

This episode killed it for me. Way too much exposition and now they're bringing aliens and Roswell into the story. This shouldn't surprise me too much since this anime came out in the late 90s. X-Files was immensely popular at that time and aliens worked their way into lots of storylines as a result.

Just like we went through a zombie craze in the 2000s, in the 90s it was all little green men (and vampires...vampires were hot back then too).

Don't get why people are saying this episode is the most confusing when it's literally a giant ass infodump explaining everything about the characters and the plot. We now know it's similar to EVA in that there's a conspiracy to join all humans into one consciousness and Masami Eiri is the guy who tried to start it but then got booted when he was figured out.

Lain has always existed in the Wired in different forms since the beginning and is something of an omnipotent entity. Her family is not her real family. The Knights are likely headed by Eiri in his pursuit.

The aliens could be a vague metaphor for what's going on but are unnecessary to the plot. It's like the religious symbolism in EVA except the creators don't tell you that it means nothing.

I really wish people weren't so quick to dismiss something as fake deep when the show so far has had some real symbolism and opportunities for analysis. Either way how is this show not tagged as horror? This episode had me scared shitless. Loving the atmosphere.

As much as those documentary portions felt random and out of place to me, it kinda gave me more insight on what the Wired is and why it's there at least. It looks like the God in the Machine who keeps talking to Lain could be the guy who tried to connect everyone subconsciously but got caught.

It's nice to see some details on what the Knights are after and I'm curious on how they can be so sure of the one truth they're fighting for and what it could be. I'll just go ahead and watch more episodes to see if I can finally understand what's really up with Lain.

Wow. Wow. Wowowowowow my brain just exploded. I'm a failure when it comes to proceed info-dump like this. I mean, I think I more or less got the idea with the Earth becoming a kind of giant network, explaining the Wired's existence, but... WHAT DOES IT HAVE ANYTHING TO DO WITH UFO ?! AND WHY WAS THERE AN ALIEN IN LAIN'S ROOM ?! AND WHO WAS THIS... PERSON AT THE END ?!
I think I'll just leave that for later and just keep going with my analysis of Lain's character.

Okay so... Lain's split personality is clearly overcoming her, but without any of the two realising it. Now, it seems more like Lain is Wired Lain before being Regular Lain...

I mean, in this episode she's just been switching between the two very naturally.
And she even sometimes acted like Wired Lain despite seemingly being Regular Lain.
But in the end I think I kind of get it.
Wired Lain, as I already stated, is the manifestation (pretty extreme) of Lain's inner feelings. Basically, she is doing everything Regular Lain is unable to do but should do for her own mental health.
Here it became more obvious than ever. Aside from the chip, the reason she invited Taro seems to be so that she wpuld have someone to talk to since she's lost her friends. But she isn't conscious of that, it's just her inner wish. That's what I understood when she thanked Taro at least, and I feel like it makes sense.
Now it is pretty hard to dissociate Regular Lain from Wired Lain... In the end it's like Lain has become a combination of the two.

What's also important to note is how outside of her split personality, Lain really seems to have something else not working correctly in her head.
When she was seemingly talking to her other self, it turned out she was actually talking all alone in her room. And remember how in the first episode she was having hallucinations... Interesting.
Let's also point out how this scene with Lain literally talking to herself was the very next thing we saw of her after having
seen her going "Click click" in her room, as if she was going insane.

And there's also her sister who apparently isn't truly empty. But the only thing she does now is mimicking a phone answering machine...
And another thing is that this episode showed the sister being in her own "vegetative" state in the corridor while the parents were kissing in the living room as if they didn't care one bit about what's going on with their daughter.
Could my neglect theory be true ?
Also, I wonder what exactly is "over soon". What were they talking about ?

Finally, I wanted to add something about Creepy Lain. We haven't seen her in this episode (though technically she's always there since she's Lain), however she's been mentionned quite a few times. Lain seems to be convinced that this Lain isn't the same as her. She knows this Lain exists and is doing bad stuff, but she refuses to aknowledge that they are the same person (though I'm pretty sure that deep down, she knows they are).
I wonder if the "wild Lain" everyone has been mentionning in earlier episodes is Wired Lain or Creepy Lain, in terms of personality. Everything seems to lead to the conclusion that it is Wired Lain... But she doesn't have a "wild" personality, however Creepy Lain kind of does. And furthermore, if we assume that Regular and Wired Lain know more or less the same amount of information sas it has been shown before (since they deep down are the exact same individual), it could mean that if Regular Lain doesn't remember having come to the club, Wired Lain doesn't either.
There's a last thing : apparently, the guy from the club saw Lain dropping the envelope, and Lain immediately assumed that it was Taro who did it in an attempt to kill her or make her go crazy.
But I can't believe it's really him, he's just a kid.
Could it actually be Creepy Lain's doing ?
It would actually make sense, though i don't see why she would've done that. Could it go as far as saying that Creepy Lain is a part of the Knights ?
It really wouldn't surprise me, but I wonder where all of this is going.

Edit : I just rewatched some parts of the episode and I totally forgot that but Creepy Lain being the one who went to the club has actually been confirmed by Lain herself. "The other one with a body only appeared at the club"...

This is probably the most challenging series I have watched so far. It sometimes gets so difficult to make a connection between so many pieces of info being thrown so randomly but well, guess that is part of the charm this series has after all.
The "documentary" segments didn't make much sense at first but once you consider them as a whole, you end up getting a better insight into how the Wired was created as well as its main purpose.

So now there is this theory about awakening the consciousness of the world by having all people being connected with each other as if they were neurons of a huge brain, in a wireless way via the Wired. And this Masami dude is the one responsible for starting this initiative on his own but got caught and killed in the end. Well, it seems we now know who this "God" being is, uh?

Ah, finally, the infodump episode that makes everything behind it make sense. My Shinsekai Yori senses are tingling.

As far as I can tell, all of the documentary pieces spliced into the episode dropped background on the formation of the Wired and its intended purposes. I'm thinking parsing it into "allegories" surrounding Lain's character might be overthinking it, but it seems I'm blind to the symbolism in this series, so I might be wrong.

Honestly, the most enjoyable episode so far. Serial Experiments Lain is reminding me of Evangelion if Evangelion hadn't spent 13 episodes building up pretending to be a normal(ish) anime before it went off the deep end. Keeping in tune to that comparison, this episode is drawing Lain into its "End of Evangelion" arc.

Holy shit, we're talking about nerual nets way back in 1998?! Damn this anime is good. Also, loved the infodump. I am still a bit confused about it. But I guess the point is that we understood how all this historical stuff lead to the creation of Wired, what Tachibana General Labs is trying to do, and what's the role of Lain in all this. I believe Lain was always there since the inception of the concept of Wired, it's just that she maybe changing shape or form or something like that maybe.

Yes!
For example, cloud computing may seem a very new concept, but it exists since the 60s - the term "cloud computing", however, was used for the first time in 1990.

Once again this anime goes ahead of its time. Almost all of us right now are dependent on the internet for information. But that information can be manipulated by other people who hold power(the Knights in this case). Is Lain's sister ever gonna get fixed? Wonder how Masami and his work will be integrated into the plot.

That scene with Lain playing a banger track while giving Taro a threatening stare was epicXD So that annoying kid is affiliated with the Knights but he's not an actual member.

ALIENS!!!! Of course... it's all because of: ALIENS!!!!!

Going online allows you to create a fake identity. But what if the two worlds collide and become one, having all information ever known to man all shared with one another, with nowhere and nothing to hide. There will be no room for lies, there can only be the truth.

Still don't exactly know what this is all getting at, but we're getting there, slowly, I think. The last episode doesn't have a low rating in terms of votes, so I think it will be at the very least, somewhat satisfactory.

This series is so one note. It makes me feel like there will be no answer in the end, with all the aspects they keep throwing at us. The shot of the Gray Alien at Lains door was one of my favorites because it's so eerie, unknowable, and unnatural looking, but when it was revealed to be an alien, I was shocked, confused and feeling a whole bunch of things. As the episode progressed giving us history on some happenings in America, involivng MJ12, the Memex, sun frequencies and such. I didn't care at that point because it was just random and seemingly unrelated. Once again maybe it'll come back to make sense, but as I have stated before, I personallly don't think it will, as Aliens are now involved in some way or whatever is happening. That's what I mean when I say the series is one note, as it just continues to throw this and that at us as viewers and doesn't seem to tether those things to what is happening. At least not overtly. Moving on, the status of Lain 'fake' family is the only thread of the storyline i'm somewhat more interested to see, especially with the sister who's name I can't ever seem to remember. Lains little date with the underage boy was so so. To all cisgender heterosexual males out there reading this: "Never just kiss a girl out of nowhere, blame it on your gender and just leave. I'm aware this was 'made at a different time' than now (2023), but it's not alright." The ending shot of the man at the end of the street; who I'm assuming was the dude who died by the train tracks, from when we were told minutes before; was the most anime thing about this anime just based on his appearance alone. I want to make it clear, that all negative points I have regarding all my past mini-reviews and those following this one shouldn't be read as me hating the series or me harboring any animosity towards it. SEL is strange and how it is on purpose, I assume. It was made to be indecipherable from the get-go, so I respect what it's doing by going against the norm. I guess I just feel that other series have done the indecipherable upon initial viewing kind of schtick better than SEL (e.g Paranoia Agent/Neon Gensis/Ergo Proxy) and I feel that SEL's methods are a bit too abstract for even people who do casually experience this type of story. But once again maybe that's the point.
