Aside from differing tastes in music as k-pop never was or will be my thing yeah, people really hate the parasocial relationshipped obsessed saesangs as well as the addiction to cancelling people every few seconds

Besides the fans maybe it has something to do with the fact it's like Japanese pop if Japanese pop somehow had even less soul and creativity.

It's also because it largely consists of boy bands and girl bands which is something that already was popular in the West in the 90s and into the early 2000s and was something oversaturated in the Western music industry. Most people got tired of too many vocalists that are just there to fawn over them. No having like five people sing on a song doesnt make quality music. This plus it's tendency toward Bubblegum Pop sometimes which can be mind numbing for a lot of people. Also not everyone likes music in a foreign language.

I'm led to believe that is entirely the case.

I don't get how someone can just hate the whole genre, because what seems to get the backlash is the fans' behaviour, not the actual songs. You have to be some real xenophobe, or cynical to just hate k-pop solely because of the music alone. But the argument stems back to shit like "MHA is bad because of the fandom" which I don't entirely understand how that would make sense lol. But it's whatever, you do what you want, but there are still some things I find incredibly silly.

Had a feeling I already posted here once before, seems I have, but above is more insightful I suppose.

A lot of K-pop fans are obnoxious and highly objectifying, but I think the majority of the hate comes from people who aren't familiar with the genre, and all their exposure comes from the 2-3 bands that Western audiences are exposed to (e.g. Psy, BIG BANG, BTS). I don't particularly like these artists, but there is a wide range of styles in K-pop and Korean ballads.

Saying K-pop are all boy bands is the equivalent of saying American pop is all teenagers if your only exposure is Top 40 on the radio with Olivia Rodrigo, Billy Eilish, et. al.

I haven't listened to a lot of it, but I don't like any of the stuff I've heard to be honest. It just sounds like generic radio stuff but in a different language.
Take care of yourself

More like just BTS. Most of the people that hate the genre have only heard of BTS.
Which is kinda sad, considering that BTS originally rose to fame on their sharp dancing skills, and not necessarily even their songs.

i like kpop, but if i hadn't gotten into it back in the day the state of the current western fanbase would've discouraged me from looking into it.

Don't know about that one. They became popular in 2016 with Blood Sweat & Tears, which most people consider their best song. I've never heard of them before that one.
Yep, that's the first song I've heard from them as well. I'm not sure I would call it their best song, but what's immediately obvious in that video was the sharpness and how synchronized their dance moves are, even more so than the typical Korean boy band. But while the song does have a nice message, there are other bands that I'd musically prefer (e.g. GOT7, EXO, BEAST, etc.).

I think the fan base is a big part of why it is hated, but I personally just don’t like the music. Most things have annoying fans anyways. *cough*

It's not just singers, there's some songs that have Korean lyrics in them, and even some JP songs that sound Korean-ish

Also have you seen the Winter Sonata anime?

I don't listen to K Pop, but I feel like that is the main reason why K Pop is severely disliked. This is an age old problem with shit in general, hating on something because of the fanbase, like My Hero Academia.

100% it's the fans. It's something I call the Shoehorn Phenomenon of some fandoms.

Kstans' bad reputation comes from forums and social media sites. The main reason: kpop fans inject/shoehorn kpop into everything unrelated much to the annoyance of other users. That's mostly it. The music is inoffensive no one cares otherwise especially about the industry itself. Some of the songs are very good, in fact.

The PERFECT example of Kpop stan problems tho: before Elon took over Twitter, whenever Trump or some "bad guy" was trending the Kpop stands would flood threads and quote tweets with Kpop images and videos trying to dunk on Trump or w/e. "Trump sucks, this Kpop guy is amazing" etc spammed a million times. Um, ok? They would spam so much, I remember it would actually trend more kpop tags on its own and they would encourage each other to spam this way lol. That... I kinda respect lmao. But it didnt stop there. They would do this to many non-political trends, like Halloween is trending? OK, half the quote tweets are how Kpop is better than Halloween. Wtf? So annoying. For years I've seen really dumb posts like that from Kpop stans. It's almost worse than bots pushing a product.

I kind of see the humor in it tho, picture a meme with like the soyjack annoyed Twitter user (me!) and chad Kpop spammer lmao.

On top of this, Kpop stans could be very toxic about fandoms they were actually related to or political shit. This toxicity probably contributed to their desire to shoehorn it into everything unrelated.

Linux users and furries actually do the same thing lol (furries on imageboards as an example, Linux users in any PC discussion) and contributes to why those groups are despised. How do I know? You simply have to ask us haters why lol. Of course furries are also hated for not only this but their lack of aesthetics and being horny all the time. Maybe the fact they hyper-sexualize EVERYTHING but are so disingenuous about it (when confronted) also smears their public image.

To a small degree, soccer fans (the lame foot version of "football" idk) suffer a bit from shoehorning into unrelated spaces, but not as bad. Indians and Americans can do this as well about their politics and religion. Maybe all these groups have a "measurable" lack of self-awareness.

Anime and game fans for some reason.. I dont feel like they shoehorn shit in where it doesnt belong as often. Maybe because they tend to be on topic or are better at injecting anime or games into other subjects more despite being known as toxic or annoying as well. But you have to admit gaming and anime mesh extremely well with other content and subjects, example:

1. Mix Donald Trump with anime? EASY. Post a cool Jojo Trump meme, everyone likes.

2. Mix Donald Trump with furries? Or politics at all? Um.. Twitter artist posts a Donald Trump furry pic (cringe).... or furry protests again (kill me)... or at best a Tumblr-coded drawing that will be featured in another "left cant meme" compilation. Extremely common to see furries do this on SM. Yeah only other furries like any of these choices, but everyone else hates you even more now lol. Ad nauseam everyone points out your furry avatar and bio. The solution would be to keep the furry shit to Deviantart, guys. Oh wait, its been +20 years, and you never do.

See how that works? Some fandoms are good at merging their fandom with other subjects, others arent.. hence the shoehorning. Now you wont be able to unsee it either 😊

Beside the fandom, and this is from my knowledge and experience. Most of the hate come from rabid J-pop fans that hate K-pop or downright don't like or being racists towards Koreans in general.

I'm not sure how many of you are old enough to remember the J-pop/K-pop fandom rivalry and feud back in early to mid-2000's before K-pop took over and J-pop/J-music's international fandom. But yeah the rivalry is very bad to the point where J-pop fans downright use racist slurs towards Koreans. When K-pop started to gain global prominence around the world like around 2009/2010, the J-pop's global fandom never recovered from this. I've seen and documented evidences that former J-pop fans that crossover to K-pop never returned to J-pop since then. And to show you I'm not making this up:

What happened to Jpop community?

Where did the j-pop community go?

Reddit threads:

Anyone wish jpop was more popular?

For the people that listen to both, Kpop and J-Pop, why do you think J-pop isn't that well liked globally.

If it wasn't for Japan's lateness to the YouTube/Streaming bandwagon, J-Pop would be as big as (if not bigger) than K-Pop right now

Where did these J-pop fans that were racist toward K-pop fans, K-pop in general, and Koreans go? I'm not sure and I can't give a definitive answer. I could speculate that they probably left J-pop fandom. Another possibility: Maybe some of those rabid J-pop fans probably became K-pop fans and probably never returned (and left) J-pop fandoms (and they probably never apologized to K-pop fandom for their racist attack on Koreans).

That's all I could speculate why K-pop got hated, not only because of the fandom/fanbase, but because you had racist J-pop fans openly hating on both K-pop and Koreans in general.

I don't know about K-pop fans, the reason I don't like K-pop is because the music doesn't appeal to me, even though the bands are pretty good at dancing.

To some extent, but also because of the K-Pop that is in the mainstream (just like the type of pop music people complain about). As a whole, people do not dislike music just because it is Korean or pop.

I mean were you aware that K-pop fans that took down white supremacists post on social media including Twitter (before Elon took over):

I mean they were also the one that took down Trump rally in Oklahoma back in 2020:

I want to let you know even though this is from 2020, K-pop fandom activism is real.

Kwanthemaster said:

There are people that are openly racist against Koreans and specifically East (& unfortunately Southeast) Asians because of the hatred towards K-pop in general. Yeah, I worried that K-pop haters can be targeted by white supremacist and you can radicalize (the one that are white or half-white) them to white supremacy, that's what I worried about, if you can radicalize a K-pop haters into white supremacy and getting them to hate on Koreans and Asians, that would be my biggest concern.

Also, there was an incident in Mexico a few days ago involving intense bullying of that Mexican K-pop fan that involved not only severe bullying, but also throwing off this Mexican K-pop fan off the 3rd floor of the school building. I'm not making this up, the Korean media has reported on this too. This is what happened when K-pop hate can become bullying or worse, it can turn into a anti-Korean and anti-Asian sentiment/backlash.

I guess it's much more of a taboo genre just because it will always live in the shadow of j-pop. I have found some pretty good songs in the genre though.
