Oh my god that almost-yuri scene :O They won't get together, huh? Guess not, that would be too great :(

I'm glad Reina won, she deserves it, even if I feel sad for Kaori... It would have been even more humiliating if they gave it to Kaori, like a consolation prize... "We know Reina is better, but here, you can play it so you won't feel sad." :/

Man.....kaori was not selected previously because of senior priority, but now that she's senior, kousaka gains solo part....poor luck for kaori

I'm late to this anime and I've been marathoning it, but I had to comment on this episode.

Ribbons wins the most annoying character of the season award. Seriously, I almost punched my monitor on several occasions. She just doesn't know when to stop does she? Insulting Natsuki and saying she didn't even get in to play in the competition simply because Natsuki made sense. Get the fuck over it and grow up. Jesus. But no, she doesn't stop there. Despite saying "I know that!" to Natsuki she then goes and asks Kousaka to throw the audition away. Clearly you do not fucking get it at all you dumb bitch. For someone who probably can't hold a candle to Kousaka she sure is really fucking good at speaking up a lot. Go the fuck away.
Just...ugh. I think I'd better stop there before I really start dishing out extremely inappropriate words. She's definitely made it onto my most hated characters of all time list.

I'm glad Kaori decided to be the bigger person and gave the part to the one that deserved it. Kousaka proved she's better than Kaori. Her performance was so much more...alive than Kaori's. As a viewer and fan of classical music, I didn't really feel anything when Kaori played but I felt something during Kousaka's performance. I don't know exactly what, but I felt something.

Also, Ribbons tears were fucking delicious. I hope I don't have to hear her speak ever again for the remaining 2 episodes.

They foreshadowed the fact that Kousaka was going to win beforehand. I forgot who said it (probably Asuka), but Kaori wanted to play for herself, not simply receive the position just because. Ribs placed unnecessary tension on Kaori for winning, even via dishonorable methods.

what was up with this audition? It seemed like nobody wanted to make a decision at all. That was like 5 people clapping...

Most of those people were bad mouthing Reina and calling her a cheat. Once Reina clearly played better, they all started to feel uncomfortable cause they knew they were wrong. But who wants to admit being wrong?

EeveeRain didn't say anything about Reina or Kumiko though. I don't really understand why you are jumping on that post specifically when she didn't even make a comparison.

* Respectfully * I thought the comparison needed to be made.

I'm not comparing the intent, but compare the intensity.

Intent:
Kuniko protects Reina from the perceived negative emotions of the band.
Yuuko protects Kaori's last opportunities.

Intensity:
Both have an irrational level of commitment. Kuniko appears to be ready to throw away all of her other friends for Reina. Yuuko is ready to throw away her dignity for Kaori.

I'm not 'jumping' on anyone. If the tone was harsh, that was not the intent. I was addressing a point, not attacking a person. That should have been clear.

“ how Yuuko had the audacity to ask Reina for such a favor, “

Because Yuuko cares for Kaori as much as Kuniko cares for Reina.

The brevity of my comment was fear no one wants to see another text wall.

[Edit] This was to highlight the complexity of the story. Both sides of all of these conflicts have reasonable elements.

[Edit] Name confusion. and my proof reading skill are crap.

I thought people hate Yuuko because she is just annoying brat. Both sides have their extreme view point but Kumiko is 1000 times less insufferable than Yuuko.

Episode would have been better if Yuuko could've just toned it down a little, but I still thought it was pretty good anyway. It takes a good deal of character to admit defeat like Kaori did, especially when the two seemed so closely matched (well, based on my un-trained pleb ears it seemed that way).

Why did they keep these yuri scene whereas Reina loves Sensei -_-

When she confessed her love I was "WTF, why !?" and want to drop but I will finish it because this anime is not bad.

I feel I will suffer again with future shoujo-ai scenes in next episodes.

-At least Yuko's not blinded by her infatuation towards Kaori to the point where she can't acknowledge Reina's skill
-Looks like Yuko was initially drawn to Kaori for her trumpet playing, but was reeled in closer from Kaori's mediation efforts in the previous year
-Spicy collusion?
-Hazuki's overall attitude toward everything is pretty great despite being rejected romantically and musically
-Looks like Kumiko's tactlessness is useful as a motivator for Reina. They actually complement each other pretty well, something that I completely missed when I watched episode 8.
-I always thought an applause vote was a really unreliable way to settle something unless one of the options got like no applause
-Kaori did a valve check before playing her solo which served as a sign that she was unsure of her preparation
-There seemed to be a false note when Kaori played the solo piece
-Apparently it was a grace note written into the part because Reina did it too
-Also, Reina's audition performance was noticeably sharper and took more musical liberties than Kaori's one, which is more befitting of a soloist.
-Also Reina didn't do a valve check before she did her solo, which is probably a sign of her conviction and confidence
-And the fact that no one other than like 6 people voted for either one at the end pretty much portrays a flaw of vote by applause
-Kinda glad that Kaori decided to end the soloist drama of her own volition and the end result wasn't decided through a pretty subjective voting process

This episode was more character-focused, in contrast to the plot focus of the episode that tied into this one. It's probably because of the focus on charactes that I noticed while watching this episode that I don't outright hate any of the characters that have been referred to by name. The audition scene was definitely the climax of the episode, and I thought it was pretty well done visually and musically. The rest of the events in the episode were pretty much all dedicated to build up to that scene, and they also served to flesh out a bunch of the band members in the process. Every scene had a significant purpose, which made this episode not feel empty at all.

The yuri scene was pretty hot.

Errr, didn't Reina and Kaori receive the same amount of votes (two)? Why was Kaori offered the place? Also when Taki switched over to Reina was that because of how she played or only because Kaori backed out? And why did 98% of the club not vote at all? Also it's silly that Kaori won at first because Reina's was obviously 100x better.

Didn't really get that scene.

She didn't win. Taki offered her the role because he knew she would refuse, it was to show the others that Kaori herself was aware of being less talented than Reina.
By the way, talk about spineless people, still not clapping for the obvious winner. Ribbon girl was bad over all but cut her some slack, she wasn't as bad as I thought at first. She was more driven by her wish to help Kaori than by her ostility towards Reina. She was still in the wrong.

Just noticed there is a second season ongoing. From what I've gotten from the other comments KyoAni is straying a bit from the novels, I wonder if they'll go all the way in the next season or back off to the original plot.

very solid episode, im glad my bae kousaka got the part she deserved it more, but also i have much respect for nakaseko she had her chance again at becoming the solo due to that one stubborn chick who doesn't know when to quit. The crowd did feel a bit biased towards naka, and i also have a feeling she didn't really know that was to be expected but yea all in all i like her character more she has respect and pride it kinda shocked me when she didn't want to play the part idk if in her heart she felt bad after realizing all the hard work both of them put in or if she realized kousaka's (bae) part was truly deserving i do admit both pieces were pretty good but kousakas(bae) i just felt it inside me

i don't get why people like reina so much.....oh! because she had yuri-ish relationship with mc-chan thats why, and considering the majority of people that watch this show............ it all make sense.

as for me reina is the most boring main character of this show i do not like her and i do not dislike her either, but i find her so boring, she's all like "i wanna be special hurr durr" it would have been much better if they put asuka or nakagawa as the main. But even though she's so boring as a character, i still think she deserve to be the one playing the solo, but goddamit kyoani give her some development, not this yuri bullshits.

as for yuuko (ribbon girl) a lot of people think of her as being biased....well its true but you people are doing the same...ya'all like "teh bicth hurt my bae reina i focking hate her hurr durr" without even understanding her character or why he did that in the first place, her actions are wrong, thats true, but lets understand why she did those actions and try putting yourself in her shoes instead of immediately killing her in cold blood for being a nuisance to your boring waifu.

at this point i am only watching for the music and for nakagawa-senpai <3 and i guess for asuka, kaori, hatsuki and sapphire too.

I didn't start watching this series because of the yuri but because of the musical instruments in the promotional materials. I didn't know there would be any yuri and wasn't expecting any lesbians in the series. Music was also the primary reason why I kept watching after the first episodes. I did like Reina from the very first scene onwards because of her frustration about the results assigned to their musical performance. She was thus a major reason why I kept tuning in.

I liked her a lot more after she played that passage of Dvorak's "From the new world" with a similar sense of frustration. A nostalgic and homesick melody played at the end of the day* by someone clearly not content with her current situation. It was around the time of this performance, this exercise in frustration of the third episode that I first started noticing that there might be something different about Kumiko's attraction to Reina. From then on I also kept watching for the yuri and their interactions in general.

Episode eight sealed it for me. Reina's frustration was articulated. She was not content with her life. She felt stifled. Is looking for a way out. Mt. Daikichi would have to do for now, but only on a school night...

If you want to call that frustration and bottled up passion her specialness then that was indeed a big part of the reason why I liked her. How she channeled her frustration and passion through her instrument and her music. By episode eight the yuri vibes were an integral part of my interest in Reina and her story but the yuri was not the only reason why I kept watching her, or this series.

By this episode, eleven, it certainly had become a very big concern that Kyoani would develop the yuri I saw into something more respectful and honest than -as you call it- "bullshits".

i watch this show because i am a fan of classical music and kyoani and i am not disappointed.

just so you know i understand reina's character, i know what drives her and it is interesting, also i don't dislike her, but the problem i had is, i find her personality boring and thus i wonder why people like her so much then after analyzing and knowing the majority of people that watch this show.....it all make sense for me.

and another thing that bothers me is in episode 10 discussion, this yuri shippers (well majority of them) was all like "I wanna kill ribbon girl so hard" and "Fuck this girl is so annoying" and "how dare hurt reina you jelly bitch" like what the heck? at least try to understand why she did that, but sadly only a few people do understand.

yes i know ribbon girl is in the wrong, so does reina with her arrogant answer that ended up hurting kaori, also like i said try putting yourself in her shoes, you admire someone so hard (like how reina admire taki-sensei and how these yuri shipper admire reina and kumiko) and want to give that person the thing that will make her happy but there's only one chance for it to become true, would you not do anything to get that thing that will make her happy? that's why its so understandable and it makes the story much more interesting for me. but for these people? hahaha....no, if ribbon girl is real these people will murder her in cold blood without questions. but oh well this is Mal so....

also i called it yuri bullshits because it's nothing but a tease. why? source LN.

The annoying brat is so selfish lol. And yes, she's annoying. They agreed they were going for a mindset. They have been training all that much to achieve what they agreed. And then the ribbon girl literally creates a scenario that shouldn't have happened since dark haired girl is obviously much skilled than senpai. Yes, senpai got fucked up in the past, but the past is gone. They tried to change the school band, and they did. Now they have to accept that the better ones should play, otherwise you're committing another injustice (this time with the whole class) to benefit one single person. No, I don't like that.

But I have to agree, Reina is too one sided and she doesn't have anything really interesting into her apart of her talent and resolve. But she is kinda dull. Well, I guess most of the characters in this show have pretty simple stories, so I think it's unfair to criticise dark haired girl like that. I mean, there's no one there with a deep story or anything. What happens with most cases are simple problems, with non-complex solutions. And that's one thing about this anime that I like: they avoid the line where the anime becomes over dramatic for no reason. They're high school kids, their lives aren't dramatic. We could get more informations about them to create personality, I guess, but it's fine the way it is.

Anyway, I'm sure some people only watch this for yuri bait, which is sad. Do you know which couple I like? The one that actually is a couple. There is barely no romance in this anime, if you're watching it because of that... well... so far you probably ain't satisfied. Correction: people love baits (emphasis on the yuri one) and shipping, so they might be, even though there is only one you can put your imagination into work lol.

Yeah, I couldn't tell the difference, either. I don't listen to wind ensembles that often, so that might be the reason.

Both sides of the conflict had a lot riding on this. Reina and Kumiko's scene at the venue was a little cheesy, but I had no trouble believing the passion behind it. In other news, Yuuko's flashback didn't reveal anything grand, and Asuka continues to be an enigma.

Actually, despite having a good level Kaori style is a bit academical and we can hear some lack of self-confidence in her notes.
Reina's solo is more harmonious and "clean".

Taki-sensei knew that Kaori would decline offer to play the solo that's why he asked her!
She has a noble spirit to recognize that a 1st grade can be better.

Im very late but i just have to post this thing in my mind

first of all im not a good musical listener but i understand that Reina is a better player than Kaori but i want Kaori to play the Solo and heres why i want and why that should happen.

Both Kaori and Reina are hard working both are good players Reina is just more talented but its Kaoris last year meaning this is her last chance to play the solo part and her last show to play with her friends. Unlike Reina who has not 1 but 2 more years to play the solo. And this is just a guess but it seems that Youko is willing to give her own chance to play solo next year to Reina if it gives Kaori the chance to play the solo.

now on to some of the back story last year Kaori was 2nd year and Youko was 1st year when theyre about to enter the competition its the 3rd years who gets the spotlight while Kaori gets sidelined because of a seniority system. But heres the problem the 3rd years were lazy they were not hard working to the point that many of the lower years left the club. But Kaori accepted this maybe thinking that at least next year it will be her chance if the seniority system is still in play and wanted to keep the band together but that dosent mean that Kaori lazed around. So last years situation was Kaori hard working, 3rd year player lazy now this years situation is both Kaori and Reina are hard working but Reina is just much more talented this means that talent will outshine hard work. Which is like working hard is pointless if it wont get you anywhere. Now in my opinion the seniority system is actually good at times and would have work this year because those that didnt get a chance last year will get it this year Like Kaori and it will ensure that every person gets his or her chance and not get sidelined by someone better. But that dosent mean people should just stop practicing expecting for the part to fall to their lap but instead keep practicing to make sure that when their turn finally comes they will play good in the competition. Which the 3rd years did not do and last years 2nd years and 1st years should have just waited for their turn though i understand that the 3rd years were disappointing them and thats why they left but in this years situation the 3rd years are hardworking its just that one of the 1st years plays better than Kaori.

Now about Taki-sensei asking if they want to play for fun or for the nationals i think when they raised their hand favoring nationals they mean theyre serious about playing hard to win but not expecting to get sidelined for better players they want to win but they want to win with their friends as well this is a high school club not a professional band like whiplash Taki should be a teacher first and a band director second hes just picking which wind blowing meatbag is better and making Kaori pick in the end because she could not or would not say YES is kind of a dick for a teacher i mean try not to crush a kids dream because you founds someone better ive seen this type of situation in other show and movies where the band manager, coach, or some kind of boss is making the group cut the weakest link but the characters refusing to accept because theyve endure so much with these guys this weakest link that they wont leave them behind

Taki is a substitute teacher because the regular one is in maternity leave and this regular one is the one that let the 3rd years be lax because she was worried that the club isnt having fun which is understandable theyre kids and should enjoy school and club activities. Not every thing should be dark because life isnt fair and she implemented the seniority system maybe to give every one a chance though i wonder what would happen if she finally returns and Taki is out of the picture maybe the band will continue to work hard because of Taki sensei

so in the end in my opinion Reina is a better player but Kaori also deserves this more because of other factors. Reina would have given the band a higher chance of winning but that dosent mean if Kaori got the solo theyre defeat is 100% sure in fact things would have work perfectly fine if Taki still implemented the seniority system because no one would have questioned Kaori getting the part because thats how its been back then and thats how it should still be right now as every one was expecting it. Seniority didnt work because the 3rd years were lazy. Reina would have just wited her turn once shes 3rd year and still would have played great. lets give every one a chance and let them actually enjoy playing with their friends instead of turning the club against each other vying for the top

i wish it went down as Kaori giving the solo to Reina because Kaori knows Reina is a better player but Reina refusing and giving it to Kaori telling her to finally shine along with her friends in their final year together and telling her to not make her regret it and Kaori replying that she wont disappoint her

sorry about my grammar im terrible

Fucking hell, can anyone still argue after this that there isn't any yuri baiting going on here, and "this is just how girls who are close friends behave"? That dialogue and those expressions don't make it look like any kind of "friendly confession" to me. Then again, I'm no high school girl, or even a girl for that matter, so what the hell do I know?

Anyway, pretty unnecessary second audition imo. Yeah, now nobody will dispute the fact that Reina is better, but I would have preferred that everyone stays salty till the comp. Where Reina would have proven that she genuinely deserves it to play the solo.

so many pussies in that band. how can only 4 out of 63 people vote on such an important issue? unreal. the most pathetic of all are the presidents.
lol'd

huge plot hole imo. but, i suppose one could say that most of them were on the fence about the whole collusion thing and not deciding to take part.

i think this was a 200 iq decision by the instructor. he wanted kaori to decide for herself whether or not to play the part. i don't know if it was intended by animators to show his facial expression when deciding addressing kaori, but i could see it in his face that it was bait considering the voting system.

I do really feel sorry for Kaori especially with her past but Reina was clearly better and deserved to get the solo part. Of course Kaori knows this herself when she actually steps down when asked if she wants the part.
I feel bad for her but I’m honestly glad Yuko didn’t get her way lol

The spirit words that Kumiko told Reina were extraordinary. The result did not change the game of solonis, still brought by Reina.

Yuko did nothing wrong. She only wanted to make sempai happy. :)

Did more people really applaud Kaori or did Taki just wanted her to have a chance at the solo after all?

The class is beyond ridiculous, no one ever stands up for anything yet they go around talking behind other people's back as if they have a right to. If it weren't for main characters, all the rest is just lame.

Oh, this was quite the heart-pounding and excellent episode!

Props to the assistant/homeroom teacher to give Taki-sensei the impetus to implementing this brilliant idea of redoing the auctions. Some enticing buildup with Yuko pretty much single-handedly raising the stakes here lol. But it’s great to see that the Senpai truly is a wonderful and honest person by heart and in doing so giving the opportunity away to Kousaka-san. Pretty sad when you think about how selfless she has been and yet didn’t qualify for this role but that’s just the difference between hard working people and prodigies in a nutshell. Got to say, though, just a handful of the whole club choosing one side over the other just goes to show how realistic and at the same time how infuriating such things are. Damn, that strong Yuri tease at the end there though, “this is a confession of love after all” whoo-hoo. And the glorious animation sprinkled all over it, brilliant stuff! Kumiko standing up for her was really nice to see too, she’s become far more serious certainly now.

Man... I lost count how many times I replayed that Kumiko x Reina scene.
The atmosphere, the music, the context and specially a great performance of both seiyus.

This is one of the most powerful scenes in this anime.
