This episode was damn heavy. Best boy Ishigami did this all in return for nothing. That's some Hachiman vibe right there. Respect.

Also I really wanna smack the one who said this Otomo girl was gonna be a main part in the story. What a simp she is, no way can she be more in this show.

The serious lack of drawn eyes on relevant characters was very distracting. Anyway it's hard to feel much sympathy for someone did literally nothing to defend himself when he had the perfect opportunity. Sure that dumb bitch Kyouko was apparently written with a smooth brain so she would probably be too stupid to comprehend the truth, but at surely one person in the audience must of had at least average intelligence to realize that boyfriend was just an asshole chad. It is annoying how so often everyone but the MC is too stupid to pickup on another characters terrible personality.

Miyuki randomly showing up at Ishigami's house makes literally no sense without context. Of course ppl have already commented that said important context was removed from the adaptation...

Regardless of Ishigami's poorly written "tragic" backstory, it is very touching seeing the cheer squad come together to support him. Tho it would have been immensely more toughing if Ishigami just happened to be a loser kid who never had any friends in the past. Being ignored and bullied is fine, but it should be because junior high kids are fucking assholes and not from some kinda annoying miscommunication/really stupid characters plot.

Our guy truly deserved it, o7. So it really was a A Silent Voice situation, good. Did Ishigami have the evidence back then to expose the guy? Or was it just from their conversation? I believe Kyouko would still be able to be happy if she reached the truth.

This episode really made me appreciate Ishigami more than I already did. The guy really has been through a lot, and the more in depth backstory really sold it.

Romance can btfo BROmance is where it's at, that Shirogane, that light among the darkness, that savior of a fallen human bringing him hope and redemption, astonishing.

He does that time and again when someone is at the bottom of the pit. Shirogane Miyuki is something else. I think his goodness will be returned someday when all these people he has saved will come to his rescue if he ever needed. But it hardly looks the case. I mean this guy is probably an amazing cook as the opening sequence suggests. He would probably even get Nakiri Erina in her babysuit after just the first try! LMAO!

BlakexEkalb said:
Wait, that’s what Shirogane wrote? I thought he wrote “Go to hell, dumbass”. At least, that was the translation I got from it. Probably just the translators trying to make the statement have more impact.

More on this: I really dislike liberties such as this as the translators try to achieve. It was in the expense of Shirogane Miyuki's character. Shirogane is very picky about words or their use thereof. He is a goody boy. "Go to hell" is something very out of character for him. If I could explain in Japanese, he has a very refined way of talking which oozes nobility and it's very important in the stories narrative as to why he does that. The manga even jokes about it with one of the girls nearly faints seeing his noble aura lol.

I can see this. However, I can also see this as somewhat being a positive. Him being very passionate about the situation, it would give more impact if he breaks away from his normal “refined and noble” way of speaking. Kind of like when the usually quiet kid speaks up, it leaves an impact when people break away from what they normally do.

Yo some deep sh^t here round here. That playboy dude's a b^tch man and I can't believe Ishigami would be encountering more a-holes until Shirogane came into his life. Mad respect for Ishigami although there could've been better ways to punish that playboy dude, you can't expect a high school boy to do that.

The dark sh^t they put on this episode caught me off-guard fo sure

But yo they totally ripped off Koe no Katachi at the end though

Overall, a top-notch episode. MAD RESPECT

Y'know...I didn't really know what to expect from Ishigami's backstory. I was both really excited and anxious to find out his side of the story, and one definite thing I can say for sure is that this episode truly delivered.

Like, I've seen some messed up plot twists in anime before (take Code Geass, Durarara, etc.), but now that I've seen Ishigami's backstory...man, the poor guy.

EVERYTHING in this episode delivered. The animation and stylistic choices made by the animation team were stunning and really made you feel like you were right in Ishigami's shoes as everything was unfolding. And then the voice acting...holy moly. MAD props to Ryota Suzuki for some phenomenal voice acting--when Ishigami started crying, I can definitely say I started crying as well.

(But the "Uruse Baka" was amazing, let's admit that right now.)

But seriously...man, Ishigami's been through a lot. What a scumbag, that Ogino. When you think about it, if not for Shirogane showing up, what would've happened to poor Ishigami? The poor guy was so depressed--if not for Shirogane reaching out, Ishigami might've just let himself sit depressed in his room forever. Would he have continued to wallow in despair and isolation? Or just let himself waste away?

Ishigami crying and Shirogane comforting him was so powerful, and definitely my favorite moment of the episode. And I loved the metaphor of Shirogane bringing the light to Ishigami and Ishigami finally "seeing" everyone's eyes. (Honestly, Shirogane is the definition of a supportive friend. Long live Ishigami and Shirogane's bromance.)
Truly why Love is War is one of my favorite series of all time: Yes, it's funny and hilarious, but when it truly needs to be, it just opens up and becomes so raw and real and emotional, no matter which character you're dealing with. (Whether Ishigami here, or Kaguya at the end of the first season, etc.) Humor is great, but sometimes reality is even more powerful.

That's a claim with no evidence, also anime of the year is someone's opinion. I can defend why I think that Kaguya s2 is going to be anime of the year, but you haven't read AoT final arc. I just think that the first part of the final season of Aot is not anime of the year material even with the stellar animation.

Yeah, AoT final arc sucks in comparison to S3 Prt2!! It's exactly similar to what would happen with Kaguya after Season 3!!

Just that, Gintama has done it time and again. Gintama is wackier. And funnier (which is subjective). But when Gintama needs to hit you with a brick or start cutting 1 week supply of fresh green onions, it really becomes something else. To this day, Gintama sent me for rides on feels trains more than any other anime. And some of them shattered me. The worst thing was the blatant lie

Gintama is funnier yes but it also has a huge advantage over Kaguya-sama in terms of the total episode count so it is kind of unfair too. At this point in time, I also like Gintama more than Kaguya-sama but if we have like 10 more manga volumes or like 3 or 4 more anime cours of Kaguya-sama, my opinion might change.

From what I have seen, I believe that Aka's writing is similar to Gorilla's. Kaguya-sama might just be the spiritual successor of Gintama that we all Gintabros needed. Fingers crossed.

I never realized that the back story of Ishigami would be this deep and dark. It's totally Ishigami to have this sense of justice and I now get it why he's so blunt and straightforward that too in a nonchalant way. I am so happy with this character development. Ishigami'a smile is everything.
Shirogane is truly the light in everyone's life. And Kaguya simply being herself sorted out the problem of Ogino.
People like Otome and Ogino takes away the light from people like Ishigami but time and again we are reminded that there are good people in this world like Shirogane, Kaguya, Iino Miko, Kobachi, the cheerleading captain, vice captain and all the normies, that will continue to love and be supportive of the people around them.

Her ex sure is a piece of 💩, but she herself is still a good girl, like she was so nice to Ishigami, even though literally everyone avoided him.
She did absolutely nothing wrong.

From her perspective, Ishigami just beat up her boyfriend pretty badly for no reason, which has caused her sadness and depression because the guy broke up with her.

She(and everyone else) knows absolutely nothing about the circumstances of Ishigami's behaviour, or what her boyfriend was actually like.

Pretty much this on the confusion and hatred thrown at Kyoko.

It's understandable why she holds a grudge against Ishii. To Kyoko, she felt betrayed by the "loner" guy who returned her friendship with stalking her and beat up his boyfriend to the point they broke up.

Notice that one of her friends started weeping when she said "My memories of Shuchiin is full of good ones." A small but power moment of how a friend would feel for another. She was wearing a smile while trying to hold back all the negative emotions in her and being able to vent it on Ishii was her way of getting over it, finally.

Yep. Miyuki has really top, top buddies of his own from his academic year who he hangs out with most of the time and are properly introduced later in the story but his relationship with Ishii is something else.

Their bromance is one of the best selling points of the story for me. I think they are the closest in the StuCo. Usually in romcoms directed towards male demographics, you don't have two powerful male characters. Even if you have two, they are usually portrayed as rivals. Not best buddies.

Exactly. You would expect something like that shoujo gag they did earlier in the season where the two of them were vying for Kaguya's love, but instead you have a wholesome and touching bromance.

Man I really, REALLY, need to starting reading this manga.

Best episode yet! Ishigami's backstory had already been hyped, but I was not expecting such a deep and dark one. This episode was so emotional, it made me tear up. The directing here was brilliant; all the scenes had so much impact. It also made Ishigami rise among my favorite characters and increase my respect for Shirogane manyfold, he is such a great person and their bromance has become one of my favorite part of the series. Ishigami opening his eyes and finally seeing the full faces of the cheerleading squad was a very powerful moment and yeah, it had Koe no Katachi vibes. Ishigami finally smiles in the ED, it's so precious and needs to be protected.

Man, what a scumbag that (ex) boyfriend was, for not only cheating, but for shooting revenge porn, and using it as blackmail/extortion/illegal pornographic distribution/prostitution solicitation (pimping)...crimes punishable as an adult even if they're committed by a minor in many places (not sure about Japan). Especially because she was a minor, he'd technically also be guilty of producing and distributing child pron. He deserved far more than just a beating, but to permanently made into a eunuch with a rusty pair of scissors, in my personal opinion.

The mistake Ishigami make in middle school...was not revealing the dirty secret to Otomo first before talking with the boyfriend. Not to mention he should have recorded the entire conversation secretly with his phone as evidence. There's a lot of actors/theatre people who are some of most scummiest people of earth, because they lie for a living, just like politicians. Just look at how many crazy people are in Hollywood and the kind of crap they spew on Twitter.

The unspoken rule is; the person who calls the cops first, is the victim that the police most likely will side with...all the way to court, even if the one who called was the actual perpetrator. The same is generally true in multiple facets of society.

Also, the first one who raises their fist and strikes, loses. Public opinion will almost always side with the underdog, which is why that trope is so common in entertainment media. That's why you have to let yourself get hit first at least once, and then it becomes legitimate self-defense if you retaliate and fight back.

Although ignorant of what transpired, had she known, then Kyoko should be glad that all that happened was being dumped. People who had revenge porn posted and spread online have been driven to suicide in the past, and the people who spread them put behind bars as sex offenders. Ignorance is bliss, I suppose.

As for Ishigami, I'm surprised he held up for as long as he did...but I'm glad he stuck to his principles to the bitter end. Most people will cave in and bend the knee immediately.

Edit: after rewatching it, I noticed they animated the side-character's eyes afterwards, showing Ishigami wasn't looking at them in the eyes before when they weren't drawn. A nice subtle story-telling touch.

I keep saying and I repeat it: Ishigami best character in the series and immediately after Miyuki.

Yu how much courage did you have? To undergo all that without being able to say anything for a person recently knew, that altruism, that strength of mind. Luckily you found a person like Miyuki who pushed you to go back to normal slowly.

Best episode of the two series, when there is Ishigami in the middle, the show never disappoints.

I have a question: what was kaguya's role exactly? Was Ogino in the same school and she sent him away? Ootomo knows the truth about what happened?(it seems no and it bothers me that she doesn't know what Ishigami has done for her).

Based on some previous comments from manga readers, it seems that Kaguya has told everything about the Ishigami case to some people in the school, who are not scared of doing bad things to others.

Basically, these people would probably bully Ogino to the point he was forced to transfer to another school, to live a peaceful life (again).

Also, Ootomo knows nothing. All she knows is that Ishigami beat up her beloved and "innocent" boyfriend for whatever reason.

@Levais: To add, these are known as Shuchiin VIPs as the manga panel above suggests.

There is the daughter of the boss of a powerful Yakuza family, the son of the police commissioner, the granddaughter of a renowned shinto priest, the daughter of one of the biggest ship-building companies in Japan (Kashiwagi Nagisa - the girl who talks with Kaguya about love) amongst others. Apart from Kashiwagi, none of them are introduced in the story (of the anime) yet.

Well, we don't know in the anime that Kashiwagi is actually one of the Shuchiin VIPs and would do unpleasant things without batting an eye seeing how she playfully talks about romance with Kaguya and others.

Well, we don't know in the anime that Kashiwagi is actually one of the Shuchiin VIPs and would do unpleasant things without batting an eye seeing how she playfully talks about romance with Kaguya and others.

Thanks for the deepening, I didn't really expect Nagisa to be part of this.

Lets hope for Tsubasa he doesnt end up cheating on her or leave her with a child as a 17yo xD
(Or rather: Lets hope he does lol)

S1E8 showed them for a bit in the Kei Part. Its an odd omission for sure. But then again, they did cut out quite a lot of Nagisa screentime in this season.
