The ending scene was pretty touching, can't deny that. I'm a little mad if it turns out that her mom really did turn back in a fucking blizzard just to get that laptop back... Was she stupid or was that laptop filled with so much sentimental value that she risked her life for it? Even then it would have been a bad decision :S

Holy poo, Raz liked a moment in Sora Yori! :o

But ya....yousa gonna just have to be mad, cuz that appears to be what happened.

Not entirely unheard of tho, its not uncommon even for professionals to let emotion cause a momentary relapse in common sense.

I liked more than one moment though :P But yeah, I didn't enjoy it quite as much as most people :/ It's a shame, but that's just how I felt.

I guess that makes sense, but it still makes me mad... Shirase had to lose her mother for such a poor decision... :(

Not sure if you've cleared 13 yet, but its always possible there was important scientific data on that laptop....but when you get done you'll probably agree with my assessment.

Haven't shed this much man tears since Clannad, but seriously those emails were so daunting, especially with that background music that went along with it.

I was able to last (though barely) until what seems to be a tsunami of email came. A part of me died there, no regret.

When a friend or relative about what to watch, I usually only said Yurucamp for this season, but now I have 2 anime to recommend.

Wow. I new it was coming. But wow. The way the story and emotions slowly unfold, all the characters opening up to it, and then the counter for unread emails. Was this the most beautifull episode an anime ever had? Very likely so.
Just elevated my score from a 9 to a 10. While the song was still playing.

PS: If I'm not mistaken this right here is the best received episode an anime ever had on MAL. Not even the finals of stuff like Steins;Gate or Code Geass are this well received, even counting out the haters. This is the Ozymandias of Anime.

This overall might be possibly even better than the already outstanding Sangatsu no Lion which also just finished airing. I totally think Winter 18 was the best season animer ever had.

Clannad Afterstory e18 is slightly higher. Which I agree with. But yes, this episode was quite amazing. 5/5 in my opinion.

indeed. I think the sangatsu no lion (2) final is also a tiny bit higher. Amazing nonetheless from an anime which "came out of nowhere" and wasnt hyped as fuck. Especially since its not a sequel or remake

It was definitely heart wrenching seeing a flood of e-mails from her mom's laptop. I was hoping, a miracle to happen that Takako actually survives somewhere. Unfortunately that was a no. I hope with this, Gin and her will help them move on forward.

Same ditto. Of course, the mother's death was the MacGuffin to drive the entire story, much like Rosebud, perhaps. And, also of course, the flood of emails could only be done on something like a laptop. In hindsight, I think the mother's relationship with her daughter could have been developed more. She was certainly not portrayed like, say, a father who put his research and exploration before his daughter, and, not that it would be easy to do so, the laptop's not portrayed, as you said, as a sentimental object symbolizing his only attachment to her daughter. A possible rewrite would be that the mother and daughter had difficulty communicating in person, but, through the daughter's emails to her in Antarctica, the mother realizes their relationship. The laptop uses the old Windows Outlook Mail Client, so does not leave a copy of the emails on the server. She did something careless which suggests the laptop might be damaged unless she retrieves it, and, when she does, there is no indication of a blizzard. The safety line snaps, and she's lost in the snow.

I think both of you focused on the wrong reason why Takako turned back for the laptop. If it was just to access emails to/from Shirase, she could've easily done that from another workstation at the station.

No, you have to remember that Takako was an expedition member, and their laptops are their entire life there. All the work and research would have been on that laptop (and you could see her furiously working on the laptop in the snowcat with Gin during Shirase's flashback). If they had left the observation post and gone back to the station without her laptop, she would be stuck without her most important tool; at least until they could mount another expedition to the observatory - it's not exactly a 15 min drive back to the office.

You also missed the fact Gin mentioned when Takako turned around, the blizzard had not hit yet, so she probably thought she had enough time to scoot back and grab her laptop before the worst hit. It was a momentary lapse in judgment, but I really doubt it was because of her daughter's emails.

In fact, if you go back and look at the scene with the emails, prior to Shirase's flood of emails coming down, the other emails in her inbox were all related to work. Nothing from Shirase. All those emails from Shirase were sent AFTER she found out her mom went missing.

Basically Takako died doing what she loved best - the Antartica research. That's probably one of the steps in Shirase's closure too.

I'm impressed that all that emotion was communicated without being too extreme (some people would probably point fingers at Love Live! here). That last scene was fantastic. However I felt like the trip montage really showed that the creators should've put more focus on developing the girls' relationship via their activities. Perhaps the whole debacle with Kimari's childhood friend could've been replaced with that.
The statement below is true.

Yorimoi has messed me up pretty bad quite a few times now, but this time's different. The hundreds of unread emails, the crushing realization that her mom never read them because she's truly gone, and the closure she's been unconsciously looking for all at once, with that amazing soundtrack.

I was left bawling for a solid ten minutes. This episode has left me a complete wreck, and I absolutely love it. We're not even at the end yet, but this is now one of my all-time favorite series.

Compare/contrast to Violet Evergarden (Spoiler for the end of Violet Evergarden):

What a bittersweet episode! Really magnificent yet sad ending that really got me good.

Really loved it to be honest and well maybe she did find her mother or at least a piece from her again that she so longed to! It's a real shame though but also a very lovely episode in general, looking forwards to see what the last episode has to offer!

It's cold, but dry. The electronics won't corrode in those conditions. The battery would be the only thing that would be dead after all that time, but that's easily replaced; and they showed the laptop plugged into power anyway.

Besides, it's likely an industrial laptop designed for extreme conditions.

Foolish in hindsight indeed, I mean she could've saved her daughter's email in other places for one, and used the crew's communications station for email and such later on. But then if not for that Yorimoi wouldn't happen in the first place so I'm not complaining lmao.

Again, the reason Takako went back for the laptop was not for her daughter's emails. Look at her Inbox before Shirase's flood of emails came down - it was all work related.

Her laptop contains all her research and work, which is priceless (and the whole reason they're in Antartica), compared to the emails, which as you said, can be done from any other machine at the base station (like Hinata's email from her "friends").
