I feel really bad being such a prejudice towards this show since it's a romance show, but goddamn in just first episode I really enjoyed it A LOT. I rarely enjoy romance shows because of the characters, but ohmygod I love the characters. They're both weird. Haha.

I hope this anime will be the second Ore Monogatari to me because honestly Ore Mono's the only romance show I really loved and enjoyed that I can sincerely recommend it despite me being a romance hater--specifically hetero romances. I'm a big yaoi fan, so there's that. I mean I'm a big homosexual romance fan, so yeah.

I literally screamed when I saw Tachibana is listening to Aimer. Gaaaah. That OP is so cute and that ED. Gaaah. Aimeeeeer, I freaking love yoooou!

Will definitely continue watching. The 2 MCs are so likable. FYI, one of the major reasons why I hate romance shows is because of the characters, and Tachibana and Kondou-san... they're not like those characters of the romance anime I dropped. Gaaaah. Please don't disappoint me, show.

Before I forget, the animation is wow, but Tachibana's neck is so loong. Haha. Heck, she's beautiful. Haha. It just bothered me at first. Tachibana's such a cutie when she's lowkey fangirling and when she smothered--not exactly smothered, but y'all know what I'm tryna say--Kondou'san's white shirt. Hahaha. I love her, laaawd. And let's not forget that blond who's so into Tachibana. He's the comic relief of this show.

As always, Wit Studio never fails to amaze me. :)

5/5. <3

This anime breaths fresh air in the current Winter 2017-18 anime lineup.
Did anybody notice how the character design artwork seems to be inspired from the early 90s or before. Or is it just me?
The story's good. Slice of life anime which are realistic are always good and it's great to see a fresh love story or atleast a good love story based on age gap.

Gee, you can always count on Wit Studio for beautiful animation and Aimer for an amazing ED.. (could also see Trigger in the credits.) Akira is fucking scary.

That said, the whole 45 yr old handsome divorcee-smoker-derp x high schooler thing is really bugging out . Why couldn't we get something a little more orthodox like having Akira be in university? :O hope they flesh out the characters more.

Huh, this was a really well done first episode. I'm not entirely sold on the premise, but the cinematography and direction were great and the art was really pretty too, although I'm not a huge fan of the eyes and character designs. The character expressions and shots of Akira and hints of her past were really well done, and some nice comedic moments too, as well with some touching ones of why Akira fell in love. I'm surprised her seiyuu isn't really in anything else, but of course I recognized the manager's voice right away XD It'll be interesting to see whether this stays relatively light or if this digs a little deeper about the relationship itself, but either way I think this will be a pretty interesting one to watch :O As for the OP and ED, I wasn't a huge fan of either song but they both fit in well with the show ... really leaning on the rain theme pretty heavily huh :P

really pleasant art and art style is cute. this anime seemed like one of the more interesting ones in this season but oh boy i'm basically setting up myself to hate this anime. there's nothing more that makes me more uncomfortable in romance anime than 20+ years of age gap, especially if one of the people is a teenager. the fact that he has an "old" sounding voice as well makes it even worse. just because he acts childish and she acts mature doesn't help either, imo

FireFistYK said:
Tbh everything was near perfect, the only thing that I don't want to happen is the owner falling in love with her. He seems like a good guy and everything but it'd be cool if the anime continued being realistic in the sense that she struggles with her feelings without them ever getting together.

I know it sounds weird but tbh this is what I want from this anime, and is not expecting.

exactly what i want as well. he's an adult with a child so he should be aware that he could really hurt her if he ends up with her. i mean, he's gonna be dead in like 20 years while she'll still be young

I'm usually wary of romance, especially something with an age gap this extreme, but man, this was really cute. I immediately fell in love with the manager, and background on the main characters was really well introduced imo. Definitely left me wanting more.
Also hoping Akira tells that annoying classmate who can't get a hint to bug off sooner or later (but we all know he'll be sneaking around and see the two together and do something shady later in the series.. )

EDIT: Also surprisingly loving the art style??? Never thought I would like those massive eyes and abnormally elongated legs, but it definitely isn't eye-burning, so that's a plus.

- Surprised to know that an 45 year old man has a kid
- Building up hopes on knowing that he's divorced(?)
- Smells an old man's shirt because she's attracted to him

All I can say is I'm not very fond of romance that lacks innocence and sweetness and I don't like the MC.

I was a little weary of starting this show from reading the plot synopsis but did it anyway because it's by WIT Studio. After watching the first ep, it was so charming and visually beautiful with great music. The art style is not what I'm used to but I've quickly settled into it. Very impressed and can't wait to watch more.

Not my cup of tea for sure...the art is very beautiful and it's a well done anime, but a 17 years old with a 45 years it's not my thing, if he was 35 I would give it a try...he is a nice guy, just not good looking one to a 17 years, makes me think of a sugar daddy...dropped

Yes anime i know, her eyes are sooo beautiful (ㅅ´ ˘ `) I hear everyone talking about their impressively long neck, but those bodies though~! Reminds me alot of xxxholic or code greass(?) Tall and stretchy. I don't know why everyone is so mean to blond boy, if she would just kindly tell him. "I'm interested in someone else" or something he'll most likely leave her alone. I can see this character showing up random to cause problems or create misunderstanding in later episodes. Im getting pretty into it though, want would she do to get "senpai" to notice her 🤔 I'll have to watch and find out.

Oh wow I'm totally digging this anime lmao.

Opening is adorable, feels like fluttering hearts when you saw your crush and the ending felt like you're missing that someone deeply. Again, really beautiful songs *reminds me of Nana though*

So as the first episode goes, we kinda get to know the light surface of the characters. A 17 year old high school girl having a little problem with her ankle and a 45 year old divorced middle age man. Nothing weird.

Poor masami, so soft I could squeeze him.

Still loving this anime, seriously on point with every problem I face with my current relationship.

Yes, I have a thing for older guys.

And don't hit me.

Fantastic.

I love the opening sequence and how easily it develops our understanding of Tachibana. The most striking thing about this is how detached it portrays from her school colleagues, and that general walk of life. Of course this is first highlighted by her ignoring Mr. Crushing Too Hard, which alone isn't much outside of a fun gag, one that provides a sense of closure with it's repetition at the end, and helping setting up a disinterest in boys of her age. The scene with Haruka especially drove the detachment home, not only through shot composition which kept her distant from them (the whole border around her far away look as well as the ending of the sequence, showing them running above and her walking below). This helps hints towards her past too, her former track career. When that past is verbally confirmed once more, it's again in a scene that visual depicts her away from her classmates. As she stands in the glass door way gleefully facing away from Haruka as she tells her she'll be fine and all, just some really cool visual detail that help cement Tachibana's perspective.

Visually the show just popped all together, there's like this pristine sheen most thing, it's really great. I really love those purple like filter/border things whenenver Tachibana goes crushing mode, it really helps make it kinda comedic, which in turn helps make it a little more endearing cause her affection is already causing me to smile or chuckle by delivering it in a punchline-y way. I loved the flashback intermixed with the kinda creepy but teenage crush like behavior of her sniffing the shirt, along with the brigh color circles that help punctuate the glamour of her crush, for lack of a better phrase.

And I already like the cast, particularly the principal players of Kondo & Tachibana. Kondo in particular is such an integral part to this working, his quickly established dad personality of bad puns, apologizin too me, forget me flys, are all crucial to making him a likable character. The problem most will have with this premise should all hinge on Kondo's characterization and reaction, and I trust this guy already. I also liked Haruka, her short little basketball trash game with Tachibana gave her just enough personality, that I am actually interested in seeing how the track side of things play out.

The animation and art style are really nice.

It would be funny if her crush on her divorced manager didn't lead to fruition and she ended up with that blonde guy, Yoshizawa. I kinda feel sorry for him.

MC is creepy for sniffing her manager's dirty, sweaty and smelly shirt.

Food porn on point though.

Absolute stunning and such a subtle quiet intro. By far one of my favorite starts for an anime of this season.

Tachibana's quirks are so cute. The expression in her eyes is so on point. And just the fact that the purple hues make her eyes sparkle so nicely.

Also chuckled hard when she got excited at the fact that he was single. SHE KNOWS WHAT SHE WANTS.

Actually romance with big age gap isn't my things ..

but something in my mind tell me that this series is more than that, i think there is lot of moral value about love that we can got from here, not just about romantic love or just relationship between a pair of couples.., i sense there a lot more than that

so i guess i'll keep watching hehe :D

and this series was also wrapped with wonderful music ( chico with honeyworks in OP and Aimer in ED), can't wait to see more of this :D

Quick first impression:
-Art style is simply beautiful, it took me about 10 minutes to get used to the characterdesign,... but I did. ;) The soundtrack really works well.
Seeing "Ref:rain" displayed on Akira's phone, finding out the song is the ED,... great! Aimer is one of my favorite japanese artist!.
Not shocked by a young girl (16 or 17?) developing a crush on an older man, it happens, not only in Japan. Curious to see how this progresses though.
All in all this first episode was a pleasant surpirse!

What is this MOVIE quality!?! This might be one of the prettiest animations for a standard 12-episode anime I’ve ever seen. The animation, the crisp details and vivd colors. The entire time I felt immersed. As if I were in a theatre. Absolutely gorgeous design.

Also, I didn’t read any of the other comments so I promise I’m saying this on my own accord, but: serious “Komi-san Can’t Communicate “ vibes. ALSO some Nico Robin vibes from time to time.
(And the MC’s tan friend is givin off those Casca vibes lmao, but the personality’s very different.)

Also ALSO, even before watching anime, this MC’s qualities have always been my type. 😅 Like, this is the one time where I’ll rip off my shirt and starting simp-ing like there’s a gun pointed to my head. The onyx hair, the straight bangs, the unfazed demeanor, HELLA TALL, it’s all there fam.

But yeah, again, this is some serious animation. Whatever studio covered this must’ve had a massive budget. Even the scene of the MC walking around the cafe and people watching. It felt like an eternity that I didn’t want to end.
And whenever they’re in school… it’s such a unique building, unlike the very normal Japanese school-buildings. The architecture is interesting and it’s filled with life. EVERYTHING is very. very immersive.

Characters so far… everyone’s pretty great. I immediately vibes with the blonde kid who is crushing on the MC. The one who asked for her username at the beginning. Man I see myself in that guy to the fullest.
And speaking of lovable male roles, the manager obviously takes the cake. The “inherently gentle, competent airhead trope” is more common than you’d think, but this is one that’s especially executed right. I like the manager because I see a lot of adults I know in him… the kind that try hard to appease everyone. To be honest, I want to grow up to be someone like the manager, and these past few years I’ve tried taking the steps to do so. I think everyone should follow his lead, no matter how stressed out with a leadership position. It was awesome when the MC was talking about him and he innately shuffled around the corner so as to not disturb them.
While the characters aren’t displaying a massive amount of depth yet, I still like the other characters. The older server who keeps lambasting the manager—it’s an endearing type of sass that we don’t see in anime that often. And the perky hostess, I don’t know why but the voice stands out to me. In a good way. Again, she’s also endearing.
The one character throughout the entire first episode that I didn’t exactly vibe with was… and here’s a huge plot twist… the MC, or “Akira” (I guess I should be calling her). Appearance and demeanor-wise, heck yeah I’m crushin. She reminds me of some IRL chicks I crushed on in high school (and I was pretty much a carbon copy of Takashi). But that’s beside the point. As of now, I think her character’s a bit flat. I’m sure more background(s) will reveal themselves in time, but even so, I didn’t find anything about her character particularly endearing or intriguing (as of yet). (Also it pisses me off the way she eats sandwiches… You’re not eating it right! Take a legitimate BITE out of it for pete sake instead of sucking on the corner 😞) So we’ll see!

❧☙❧☙❧☙❧☙❧☙❧☙❧☙❧☙❧☙❧☙

I’ve been so entangled within my leisure these past few days. I’ve finally caught a break from work and school. I’ve just been binging weeb shii. In doing so, I forgot to eat anything. I’m going on like 40 hours. I mention this because I probably shouldn’t have chose an anime like this (to start) on an empty stomach hehe. I mean ohmygaw why does anime food always look so good. They even got the sizzle animation and sound effects on the burger.
I’m also going on 30 hours no sleep so that’s why as soon as I’m done with this episode I’m hitting the hay. Then first thing tomorrow I’m going to my local Japanese restaurant for some burgers N rice.

Particularly uninspiring moments from the media:

The damn shirt sniffing… don’t get me wrong, I get it. But I was hoping throughout the entire sequence that no one would interrupt her. Not only would that be predictable, cliche, and too awkward for my liking, but my girl was havin a moment. Then again, for the scene to NOT end with the manager popping in on her would be a bit unconventional. But COME ON Akira HOW do you mess that up… coulda at least pretended you were folding it or something, instead’a slowly turning around with it jammed up your nostrils like that.

And a pet peeve of mine:

Oh my god, that's the most beautiful anime I have seen in a while. I was only supposed to take a peek but I ended up watching the whole episode. This is not my first May-December anime, as I have seen Koi Kaze, so I'm not put off with the whole concept. But I really do hope that this anime won't glorify relationships like this, lest it ends up like a creepy old man's fantasy (the seinen tag is not unnoticed). This is definitely a premise that will challenge a writer's ability to write good characters, outside of stereotypes. It can either go really good, or really bad. So for now, I'm looking forward to the potential.

I like the subtle story telling here. Show, not tell. I like that we first hear about her not playing sport when having lunch, so she eats less. Then a flashback to her coming out of a physical therapy office to discover the cafe. Then a shot of her right achilles tendon that obviously had surgery. Now we know why she had to quit the track team + how she discovered the cafe.

well well well there were a lot of AYO WTF moments but guess that's the whole premise. can't wait to see how this kind of relationship is tackled. don't even wanna think how crazy twitter must have gone when this was airing.

also the double standards are clear, when tachibana was sniffing that shirt it was portrayed as something sweet, a young girl in love sniffing clothes of the person she loves. not that sniffing your partners clothes isn't common but the manager exactly isn't her partner so....still pretty sure she must have felt quite satisfied after that deep and long sniff.

did not expect the manager to picture himself in the guy in the last scene. i think it felt a little forced like they showed that just to establish that "okay this is the kind of anime this is going to be and these are the 2 characters we will be focusing on, you can clearly see that the girl likes the manager but here's this little scene where you can see that manager also is interested in the girl".

the beginning of the episode was nice, they really really tried to set up the atmospheric tone and the whole vibe but it kinda fell short for me. didn't hit the same but i could tell they really tried to show that.

had no idea ref:rain was the ed of this anime. been listening to it for a long time and only found out today.

looking forward to see these 2 characters' relationship explored.

I don't remember this series well or why I chose to watch it the first time around (I'm not sure if it was because its by Wit Studio?) so I'm basically coming back to it blind. I will say from the first episode this feels like it was either written as the fantasy of a 45 year-old dork dude or a precocious teen girl. Obviously the manga author was a 31 year-old lady so I suppose its closer to the former.

I also love when an anime does that kind of thing. That includes small character moments and actions, too, like tying your hair or simply staring into a cup of coffee.

I don't know what it is exactly, and maybe it's not just one thing, but the premiere episode also made a deep impression on me.

Wit Studio is definitely widely-respected, and I also like a lot of their shows. The studio was what caught my eye to check out this anime, actually.

@perseii Your words remind me of a paper I once read about affective forecasting and "impact bias," or the idea that people tend to overestimate how much they'll suffer from serious setbacks. For example, people will believe that being laid off or suffering a breakup will cause them to feel terrible for months and months, when it generally causes pain that only lasts a few weeks. Part of the reason why this happens is that people tend to underestimate the (usually very positive) impact of surrounding circumstances. In the moment of trying to imagine the future, they fail to account for the little everyday things, the people they meet, the food they eat, etc. and how that will help them heal and move forward.

I've been thinking about impact bias recently because, in my own life, I've failed to account for how important these little daily occurrences actually are to me. Over a decade ago, I picked my first-choice university. I was lucky to be able to do that, but I ended up unexpectedly hating many of the small things in life. I got sick of the school's food, I got sick of the town I was stuck in, I got sick of the people around me. I had a terrible time with my undergrad studies, and now, when discussing college choices with my students and advisees, I make a point to highlight all the little things. I tell my students to eat a meal at the school dining hall when visiting prospective colleges, to check out the dorms, and to pay attention to how passers-by conduct themselves.

I think anime that highlights the stuff you mentioned has helped me move on from my past mistakes, in a way. Or maybe it's just providing some validation of my perspective by venerating the mundane. Either way, the excruciatingly beautiful attention to detail, whether its on a cup of coffee or a character's tics, helps to ground a lot of shows in a way that many other forms of media don't even bother trying. And this show's first episode has that down to an art.

bit of an essay here, but hopefully you don't mind some reading

I haven't heard of this psychology/perspective, it's interesting.

I think I've gotten used to the idea without realizing, though, through watching certain anime. It seems to be an aspect of the wider Japanese culture as well, at least more overtly when compared to Western thinking.

I also wish I was more aware of this when I was younger. But I'd like to think that I got happier and more clear-minded thanks to anime.
