Bittersweet ending was just perfect for a manga like this.
Still wanted Isobe to find happiness. Ohh well.

Playing Kaze wo Atsumete on the background while reading the last few chapters made it 10x better.

Loved the ending, mainly because I really HATED Koume, and was just satisfied seeing her crying and heart broken :3 She was just a selfish, toxic, attention whore throught the whole thing, when she told Isobe he should have killed himself like he said before, I wanted him to kill her off on the spot, lol.

Other than that I guess I enjoyed this short series. Artstyle was WONDERFUL, my first time reading Asano, gotta check out his other works, even of just for this.
As for the story... I don't think all the meaningless sex scenes were that necessary. I like stories where characters' sexuality is somehow connected to their development, not just fanservice, sadly here it felt like it was too much at times. I'd rather have explained how Isobe's brother died, and why Isobe was later shown to be turned out by wearing girl's skirt. I guess it was just to show he's getting more and more corrupted, shame there was nothing more to that, and it didn't really go anywhere.

Good, but these themes could have been explored a little better, I guess. 7.5/10

solid manga, not so fond of the ending tho, but it was meant to be short so it's acceptable. Maybe deep down isobe loved satou, he said those things to get her to move on. It worked out.

I may still be too young and too early to have read this masterpiece, since there are many things that I don't understand in this series. I plan on re-reading once I grasp enough knowledge on critical thinking and understanding on what I always consume be it what kind of genre (ex. Romance, Drama, etc.). There are some things that I understand but it's just I think that's it's still too early for me to consume romance, drama, psychological genres, but if there's a way to easily understand a series like this then I want to know because I like this kind of series and it's a waste to just read it and not completely understand everything.

Just finished reading this manga and wow, it was pretty intense. Can't wait to read other works from the author!
It has left me with a lot of questions, and reading your insights really helped me figure out the pieces I was missing. There's just one thing that still keeps bugging me (I think it has not been brough up in this discussion yet, though I'm not 100% sure 'cause I haven't read ALL of the posts, so if someone else already talked about it, I apologise):
what about the lost SD? Satou says she lost her SD on the beach (just like the one Isobe found?), and when she talks to her new boyfriend she says she took pictures of herself and the sea... Doesn't this remind you guys about the girl from the pictures? Doesn't she look a lot like the grown-up Satou? I don't really get what's happening there.
At first I though that it could've been a coincidence that both Satou and that girl lost their SD on the same beach, but this manga doesn't really look like it lets things happen by coincidence. Then I thought that maybe some sort of narrative 'time warp' was occurring, making Isobe find the SD Satou lost years later, and falling in love with her (again). But this still doesn't seem right.
Do you have any idea?

Here is how I understood it: I think it's supposed to be a vicious cycle, suggesting that the boy of the couple will find Sato's SD card and the same story unfolds all over again. Either Kashima or Sato mentioned that they looked like middle schoolers, so the two kids were supposedly younger. However, a confusing point to note is that they were shown to be kissing in a panel, which implies that they had whatever Isobe and Sato couldn't have. And anyhow, the whole thing with the older girl who Isobe claimed to be going after was probably a lie to allow Sato to move on; we never got to actually see Isobe interact with the older high school girl directly. In the end, Isobe still put Sato's feelings before his, wishing for her to forget about him before his inevitable arrest - he knew he couldn't get away with premeditated battery. That was, right until the very end when he denied her of a final kiss through a bittersweet resolve.

This ending turned my original 4/10 to around a 5-6/10 since I liked the message. That being said, I cant say that it really was that good overall until around the end.

Asano you are going to kill me one day with the sheer impact of your works. Sex is but a complicated issue and the subject of sex with high schoolers is of even more turbulence, ambiguity, and loss: and Asano manages to capture the scope of this seamlessly. I'd have to say this manga personally resonated with me just as equally as Punpun did, and I'll definitely look back on this manga with fondness.

One particularly interesting conflict though, is Isobe's clashes with his inner thoughts and society. He's a coward. He's quite frankly unmotivated to do most things; a dormant contributor to society. One could even say his personality is so banal that he's easily replaceable. However, I think Asano did an exceptional job to implicitly express his inner frustrations with silent, still scenes that conveyed his helplessness, and his dead brother's impact on him. Sato had sex with him because of his passive personality, and loved him for being like so as well. And why is that so? because he was there for her, no other essential reasons really.

Welp, the ending was certainly stupid and underwhelming, though the rest of the manga was great.

8/10

The ending was certainly contentious in how self-sacrificing Isobe was depicted to be, and how the relationship ended up being. However, more than anything, it was overwhelming and even heroic in how much effort Isobe was willing to put in to incite Sato's gradual change. I think Asano meant to imply that Isobe was also deeply in love with Sato, and if they had gotten together, Isobe saw no future for themselves (considering their casual sex relationship as well). So he wanted for Sato to move on, and a hard pill to swallow it was for him too.

A thing I love about Asano is how willingly he is to challenge the fairy-tale romanticization of love, relationships, and sex. Instead of an ultimate resolve, he greets us with pessimistic, bittersweet, and profound lessons that deal with human issues within a modern-day context. In this case, it's that casual sex is a selfish excuse for both partners, and perhaps even a small commitment from the start is the difference between saving the relationship or not.

A bittersweet lesson from Asano is the best. Always eager for more.

I am pretty damn sure that, by the end, he hates her guts. As the story moves forward he slowly but surely falls out of love with her, as he understands how selfish she really is. I hadn't really understood this before the second read, but he is right: it really is all about her. She can't even express affection without being selfish, despite how obviously he is hurting in his isolation and grief for his brother. The months that passed between their last contact before Sato's confession were the nail in the coffin, really. Isobe wasn't lying when he denied her the kiss - he wasn't going to let her manipulate him until the very end.

She "moved on", but only because she was forced to, and she didn't really change a lot. She still acts selfishly when with her boyfriend later on.

Isobe really did grow and move on, and perhaps learned a few interesting things about himself in the process.

This ending is a bit of a bummer. If the author had properly fleshed out a suicide attempt instead of ditching, and especially if the main couple ended up together, this would have easily become one of my favorites. Other than that, it was a fantastic read.

Don't really know how to feel about this ending. She ended up with a kind of happy future and a boyfriend she can trust. But that was not what she was looking for. ''A girl on the shore'' a girl that was looking for the sea. Don't know what happend to the guy but he probably went to that school or died.

Art was good, story was weird.

WTF, Why? just why Asano???

You've created a damned happy ending for Oyasumi Punpun when it should'nt be...

But then this manga, for everyones sake, why cant you just drop a damned proper ending that'll make your story more lovable...

I wouldnt care enough whether this manga's ending wont be realistic enough for lots of people, but please for once, I want to see a god damned proper ending (more like wholesome that fits the story) that'll satisfy most of the readers.

Honestly I really love Asano's every work, its just the ending! It killed the mood that I had made while reading through out those journeys I had...

This story could easily be one of my favorite slice of life manga of all time if only Asano give justice to the main character. Here I am thinking that I'll purchase the physical copy later after getting interested in this story, but after I read the ending, it easily changed my mind. Glad I read till the end fist before wasting my money for some unworth-it another shitty ending.

Still "I Sold My Life 10 000 yen per year" remained my favorite slice of life manga of all time.

Its really frustrating to expect something to someone you love, then ends up being a big dissapointment, well I guessed Im prety used to it, after all, everytime I discovered something I might love(Manga/Anime),, it always ends up being a dissapointment in the end...

I've read the manga since I seen a few suggestions saying that this manga is really good but for me it really wasn't Its more like some hentai manga that is trying to be deep with unlikeable characters. I wouldn't reccomend that manga to other people I want to read PunPun in near future I hope I'll like it more than this

So far, I've read all of Inio Asano's manga,
except for Solanin, DDDDD, and Oyasumi Punpun.
Or any homosexual stories he's done.

Thus, to be fair, I don't know yet how truly good or bad he is as a writer.

But out everything I've read so far, none of those manga are great.
His only very good manga are his debut; What a Wonderful World, and Downfall.
Everything else is either decent, mediocre or bad.
While some one-shots, individually are better than others.

His psychological portrayal (theme) on the meaning of life is always clear.
There's a few problems on practically all of his stories though...

Most are forced and exaggerated which becomes unrealistic or implausible to how his characters act.
Especially teenagers.
Emo, uncaring, suicidal or murderous teenagers is real, but the way he establishes them to be is poorly done.
It's not convincing or feels real at all, that it just looks forced.

His other faults is how there's never much structure.
Life is unpredictable, but his stories as a whole are mostly messy, unstructured, chaotic... and end up becoming lackluster, with little meaning because it's all over the place.

This story included.
Teenagers kinda using each other, sex, not being honest, wasting their lives, hating each other... two troubled brats. Whatever.

Then, after being suicidal, hurting the ones who caused his older brother to commit suicide, he drastically changes with a sudden surge of confidence after asking out the random girl from this unknown SD card.
The female lead finally reveals her feelings, but he rejects her. Rightfully so, because she never- whatever, they're fucked. 4/10.

It's a mess of an exaggerated story. Somewhat decent, but very flawed.

Story aside the visceral art would keep me engaged for hours trying to find the details in every panel. The shade ,the colour, the realistic proportions and scenery is wonderfull to look at.The story is a simple narration on a convulated past of a character which shapes his future and present. He is a gray character chained due to circumstances ,dwindling between an effort to live and end it all. His hate for himself swallows him and resigns into self inflicted harm which propels the vicious cycle. This chapter felt filler though ,wonder why the author tried to give it an ending, and failed, when it was evident he plucked a segment of one's life which doesnt have a defined prologue or a epilogue.

I’m glad that Isobe and Sato ended up each going their own way because it would’ve felt forced if they ended up together because they simple aren’t the kinds of people who are meant for each other. I’m also glad that Isobe seems to have changed for the better, and that even tho it might’ve came off as harsh in the moment he didn’t let himself waver at seeing Sato cry. I do however wish she and Kashima ended up together, seeing that they have so much chemistry. I just don’t like the idea of Otsu "devoting" himself to Sato because it feels like the same scenario will happen all over again, one anxiously attached person idealizing their avoidant partner.
