| I don't really like both. If ... then only yuri and with hardcore sex in hentai. Usually trying for a real non-hentai plot gets crappy cause it focuses on certain stuff liked by certain types of fans. (Genre is fanservice itself.) This even more so for Yaoi (and Shounen Ai) where I personally find it disgusting most of the time cause of the art style. If I want to watch gayness I need reall stuff like "Naked Kombat" (google it if you don't know it :D) and reall manly guys fighting and dominating each other. Not animated stuf. Not kissing. |
| Yaoi. Not all of it but there are some seriously wonderful yaoi stories. Maybe I was just unlucky but most Yuri that I have seen was pretty bad. It was always non con or at the must dub con. In other words - it was either rape or sexual molestation. Yaoi also has stuff like that but then again it also has stories like Yuri! On Ice!!!, 10 Dance and Free! It is too early to say in what direction Given will go. |

For me, "A good romance is a good romance", I will only say that it is not my type I won't and can't say it is bad without watching. Like I have watched and read a lot yuri and I'll say it is not too sexualised/ But then some people say yaoi is too sexualised, i don't think that too in case of manga as in my view Given is a good romance manga (I have read till 4 Volume only, tho) and yeah people say yuri doesn't gives a right representation, so just for clarifying that just read my forum signature. |

| The terms are not symmetric. “yaoi” is an actual genre with stylistic elements; “yuri” is simply anything that involves an all-female coupling. So obviously “yaoi” is better, since dreck such as Yuru Yuri is still “yuri”, but if they were all male it would not be “yaoi”. Since yaoi has actual stylistic commonalities such as drama, tragœdy, and rape, it is obviously better, given that drama, tragœdy, and rape, are all patrician elements of storytelling. |

If the leads in yuri are just pure and cutesy moe blobs then I don't like it and that makes up a pretty large chunk of yuri series. Though its hard to find yaoi where the characters have any chemistry. Yuri when written by women are peak and yaoi written by josei/seinen authors can be decent. |
| i cant relate to guys in yaoi, it feels like im watching from the sidelines with yuri im more invested, as i can somewhat relate, or i actually get to live a little bit of a fantasy that is very much inclusive to me there isnt any objective quality i could point to, i just dont care about nor vibe with the guys in yaoi, and to be perfectly clear its probably assumptions, biases, all kinds of flawed subjectivies and most importantly feelings and some personal stories and shit u know idk reading lesbian romances has kind of become a big part of my life, with a soft spot for school and university stuff no hate to yaoi heads gay is good |

| As an LGBT person, I appreciate and like both genres. However, it's harder to find wholesome BL stories compared to GL- at least it was like this a few ago. Yaoi is very oversexualized and the "uke" "seme" dynamic is unrealistic at best, and uncomfortably rapey at worse- not to say yuri doesn't have problems with doubious consent and oversexualization (looking at you, Citrus). Every gay story written for a mainly heterosexual audience is going to be fetish fuel for sure. Once in a blue moon you will find an actual good story. |
