I need more, more, MORE! I agree with the people on here who are asking for a movie!

This was a really good anime. Honestly, I didn't rate it that high (7) because the story just didn't exist but as an overall experience, this anime deserves a 9! I'm happy they ended it with a filler-style episode but I was really disappointed that the previous 5 or so eps were also fillers! I loved the whole 'slice-of-life but at the same time mystery' aspect to the story but after giving us 2 mystery packed arcs (the uncle arc and the Jyumonji arc), the last few eps just fell short for me.

Also, I expected so much more from Tomoe (the big sis). I really wanted a better explanation of the role she played in all of this and they could have at least shown her face! Too much of a dramatic aura was created over her.
Pirates are evil? The Marines are righteous? These terms have always changed throughout the course of history! Kids who have never seen peace and kids who have never seen war have different values! Those who stand at the top determine what's wrong and what's right! This very place is neutral ground! Justice will prevail, you say? But of course it will! Whoever wins this war becomes justice!

I think this series needs another season. The story was amazing and also the character development must be more justified.

It deserves another season. I'm craving for more. I'm not contented.. sigh..

Nice ending. Reminded me a little of Kimi ni todoke, they are so slow in their relationship but Hyouka is not strong in romance of course xD

Heh. I actually hollered "BEST ENDING EVER!!" at the TV when Oreki said he'd take care of the business. Needless to say my elation was short-lived. It's hard to get too upset about it, though, with a show this good.

Great series, great ending. It could have ended on a much happier note but that would have just been like any other anime or show. Instead it shows the uncertainties and apprehensions that run through a guy's mind before they make decisions. And it also ties in very well with the ending song where Oreki and Satoshi are both labelled cold cases indicating that there is no resolution to this mystery (of whether they will get together with the girls or not). That said, I empathise more with Oreki because taking care of Chitanda is a huge responsibility considering the family background that she has.

So all in all great anime; I did get attached to the characters more than with any other anime (maybe except Clannad) and the animation and the music were amazing.

I think that the ending was faithful to the MC's personality and the anime's tone and mood, but it still upset me.

Surprisingly great anime, one I didn't expect for certain. myanimelist score is given a 9/10 and this score is given a 4/5.

Intriguing storyline and characters, as I continued watching I felt engrossed and really wish I watched this anime much earlier than I have now.

My favorite was still the culture fair arc but this last episode was nice too. It wrapped things up nicely although it feels like there need to be more. Houtarou has become less lazy and more 'outgoing' throughout the series, all thanks to Chitanda. He really is influenced by girls around him.

I wonder if we will ever get a season 2....

Well, all I can say is...

I feel like the majority of people didn't understand the ending to this series. Chitanda helped Oreki, as a character, develop from a lazy energy-conserving person into a man who would eventually use his talents to take himself to successful places. Ironically, this conflicts with their mutual attraction as Chitanda expressed that her dream was to inherit her town/farm which had little potential for growth. So in the end, they have no way to be happy together and thus were not meant to be.
Men always seem to think about their past before they die, as though he were frantically searching for proof that he truly lived.

Hmm, interesting episode ... not too much happening, nor was there a great mystery, but man was it pretty! :P KyoAni does it again ... those cherry blossoms sure were used quite extensively XD
Glad to see nothing bad happened with Mayaka and Satoshi. Plus a good talk at the end about what Chitanda's gonna do in the future ... I was surprised that Houtarou offered to join her, then of course he didn't actually say it XD Pretty good ending episode though!

Overall I did really enjoy this series! Pretty interesting cast of characters and the mysteries were always pretty engaging. Little hints of romance, but not overshadowing, which I'm grateful for (excusing the 3 or so episodes which were pretty dull). Plus the characters all changed too ... I mean Houtarou actually doing things?! WHAT?! ;P Not to mention that animation and music were SO GOOD. Glad I watched this eventually ... better late than never right? XD 9/10

The slowest episode in the whole series and close to boring, especially the first half, disappointing in that sense. We didn't even get to see Chitanda's outfit clearly.

Still outstanding animation overall and nice last moments, I wasn't expecting any romance so this was a good conclusion to the story I think (Oreki changed so much), the series is an excellent combination of Slice of Life and mystery for me.

Someone knows the truth between Satoshi and Mayaka's relationship after the valentine's day incident? How it was resolved? Satoshi managed again to reject her love (using probably that stupid reason - ep 21), making her "accept" it, and that they would be at least "normal" friends?

I mean, they talking with each other again and etc didn't mean that they're dating or something.

What i think is that they're just being "normal" friends again, as they were before the valentine's day incident.

After all, Mayaka still loves him, and i doubt she would stay badmood "forever" about him (even that inside of her, she is sad by a probably unrequited love).

So much wasted potential from this series, probably the most wasted potential I have ever seen.

It's too bad too, all of the right piece were there. Really disappointing.

Not a "bad" series overall, but definitely no where near masterpiece material. More like a 6/10 that has potential to be a 10/10.

Less mystery in exchange for better quality mystery. Too many "one episode" mysteries instead of arcs. No where near enough character development. Chitanda started off cute but by the middle of the series got annoying, but improved slightly the last few episodes.

All the people complaining about this anime not having an ending... you so wrong.

It started out around Oreki and his grey life, not wasting any energy.
At the end he's ready to spend all his energy to help her in any way that he can.

He doesn't have to say it, she doesn't have to say it, this is the climax, the rest is what we know will happen, and that's why it's such a great ending. It's perfect the way it is.

(no season 2 vote from me, this is all I needed, anything else would be superfluous.)

I really can not explain how I feel now... Bittersweet I guess... This was awesome though. Especially the last episodes. I liked the whole thing. Seems like the colours had something to do with symbolism, that Eru brings happiness to Oreki, or that Oreki is gonna change because of Eru entering his life... Anyways, 8/10. Highly recommended.

Mayaka and Satoshi were by far more interesting characters to me. Chitanda's in your face attitude and curiosity spamming got irritating half way through the series and I got slightly bored of Oreki being lauded for solving mediocre mysteries which nobody else could be bothered putting a little thought into solving lol. Some of the episodes were kinda lame. Like really really over explained considering the content. The romantic teasing was a little too much at times also :<

Enjoyable overall though, the visuals were absolutely delicious, had some really thoughtful moments like the bridge scene last episode which is probably my favourite of the series. 7/10 c:

Wow a straight 10/10. There've only been three other anime so far that have scored that high on my list. It wasn't even the plot or that it gripped me. It was the art, the characters, and the excellently executed homage to classic detectives. With Houtarou as the depressed hero in trenchcoat who even sees his childhood jolly friend turn into the villain, and who is ultimately the one being saved himself by the woman he's been protecting the entire time.

I had the same reaction as stb, but in fairness it would be too soon and not fit Houtarou's character (yet). Similarly it would probably shock Chitanda more than it should.

Also, I think that JohnIG is right, and we should see the ending in a more positive, but also conclusive light, though it is not explicit at that. Didn't anyone else notice how the wind blew and how Chitanda reacted EXACTLY as Houtarou envisioned, even though he didn't actually say those words? That's pretty much confirmation of the vision. Finally, as Houtarou states it is getting cold (meaning he should leave), Chitanda tells him it's spring (meaning she wants him to stay).

waaaaht said:
And... Oreki just proposed to Eru in his mind. I mean, he thought of taking care of the family's business, so somehow, he wants to be a part of the Chitanda's.

Precisely and that realisation on his part is both a huge accomplishment and all the victory this show needed.

This is it.

This is the show that proves a normal everyman can be a compelling lead. It shows us a young boy who's general disposition has no dramatic strings attached to him. Just a naturally lazy guy being worked into so many tiring situations at the behest of a curious lass, a pushy older sister, and a not couple that indirectly and directly gets on his case.

Poor Houtarou.

Being asked to think much more than he'd like to exhausts him in more ways than one. For a guy who can so often deduce the how of so many mysteries, it's the why that often eludes him while his heartful opposite in Eru understands what this detective doesn't deduce. Him becoming a little more empathetic, her becoming a little more restrained, Houtarou and Eru's growth through the story is Black and White becoming cherry blossom pink instead of a dull gray.

Gray being the color Satoshi uses to describe our lead. Every so often this fool shows an envious side of himself reflecting the reaches of a soul he'd rather not show to girl and friend but not girlfriend Mayaka. Make no mistake though, Mayaka isn't completely bound by her feelings for Satoshi. Does she think it nice if she and him were to go out? Definitely. But she's also level-headed about the whole affair, and the four friends hang out all the same tackling one triviality after another.

The piece itself calmly channels a high amount of energy. It never drags its feet trying to get anywhere, but there's never a moment when things suddenly pick up. Things don't happen suddenly (except for Mayaka's manga midadventures. Seriously, did anyone check the script on that?), but slowly. It doesn't get better, because it demands a special commitment in the first place; it's atmosphere serves to lull viewers to placidity, but its story demands pondering.

It's not going to be for everyone, despite all appearances. Hyouka is like catnip for those who can wrap their minds around the rare confluence of elements about it, and completely unnoticeable to anyone else. Then again, maybe the people who liked this piece were just lucky. Would you like to just blindly believe my theory or investigate the situation yourself?

I'm curious~

I'd like to know about what actually happens between Houtarou and Eru. Oreki thought about offering to help her with the family business, then refrains afterwards. Here's what the wiki has to say:

'However, after remembering Satoshi warning him about the challenges of living a rose-colored life, he holds back, and instead appreciates the coming of spring with Eru.'

To me, that sounds as if Oreki refused to say anything to Chitanda and won't confess anything to her at all. Although, the wiki also states that he realised he had feelings for her.

Does any know whether in the end they stay together?

Just finished watching the whole series in one sitting. It was quite enjoyable, even with the open ending.

Though the last bit kind of ruined Eru for me - people can decide their own lives, nobody is going to force her to stay in the little village if she doesn't want it. The fact that she so clearly states that she's going to let her family-ties dictate the rest of her life and the implication, that she'd like to shackle Houtarou down with those same chains is quite repulsive to me.

Sure, if they were in their 30s, then the situation might be a bit different. Houtarou might welcome a life in the countryside at that point, especially if it's with her - but there's no way in hell that he should clap on those chains before he's had a chance to see what else can life offer. Just from personal experience, I find that people who live their whole lives in the same village/city and never leave for any extended periods, have a really warped worldview - their development as a "person" has been stunted by living in an environment that never changed.

So yeah, I decided to take the ending to mean that Houtarou would not end up with Eru - he didn't voice his feelings, since he could see the burden that would come with a relationship with her. He'd go off and live his live freely, while Eru continued being a loyal little heir for the rest of her life until her parents decided to arrange a marriage for her or something equally stupid bullshit that goes with heritage and traditions. I think I'll avoid any future releases that might dissuade me from this conclusion - unless it also includes Houtarou convincing Eru to leave the crummy village.

god, this had too many boring segments and the non-boring ones were completely unsatisfying. not nearly enough character development to justify 22 episodes.

i had to force myself to make it through some of those "mysteries", and the way everybody acted like they were the most important events ever when in fact most of them were super mundane really put me off. the last one with the chocolate was pretty decent.

animation was pretty great though. KyoAni never drops the ball.

i wanted to give this a 7/10 because the main characters were all likeable (Eru was adorable though a bit annoying sometimes) but this just wasn't memorable at all. 6/10.

had dropped this series when it aired back then,
but i started watching it again since i got curious (pardon the pun)

it turns out to be really great watch(if you can marathon it),
after i dropped it first since i think its boring..

i enjoy how oreki character developed from totally lazy and unmotivated into a passionate guy.

the ending is quite satisfying, let them teenagers takes their relationship at their own pace,
pretty nice conclusion, and there's no need for season 2 anyway,
but an ova for 2-3 eps is always welcome when the books ends,to give us idea what happened when its all over :p
