This is what I'm expecting. One of the top 8 had to drop out, so the 9th best time (Haru) will get to compete. Rin's a douche, a huge douche. Kou is adorable as always.

I really like how they've built up the rivalry between Haruka and Rin. Rin's back story really helps show his fierce desire to win. The end result of the race did a good job at showing how Haruka didn't care about winning or losing, he just wanted to swim with Rin. I wonder if this is going to warm him up to becoming competitive in order to keep that.

I think this episode might have been my favorite so far from this series. This series actually has some good substance to it. I especially liked that dream sequence in the beginning, and the swimming scene was actually executed pretty intensely. Looking forward to what we're in for next.

Great episode, we could finally see some swimming
That OST is wonderful, I love dubstep!
Poor Haru, I felt sorry for him

Haur's face at end. I think he is more sad that Rin told him that than he lost the race.

I'm not sure why people are bashing Rin so much. Yes, he said some douchey things, but Haru wanted to be 'free' as well. But when Rin said that, I guess he realized that he didn't want that. Haru should have been okay with what Rin did if he really wanted to be 'free'. I'm pretty sure Rin understood that too. Rin didn't do anything outrageous. He's just trying to reach his dead father's goal. The amount of hate on Rin right now though... @___@

Tragic Rin's past...It was a little bit sad episode. But I really don't know why Rin won, I thought Haru is better. And Rin was a little bit...savage in this episode. I know, he want to make him father's wish come true, but it was a little bit weird and I'm waiting for the revange ;)

Rin's been a jerk the whole series though. His "I'm better than everyone" way of thinking has just been highlighted in this episode. Sure his whole father thing is sad and sure he has been shown to be nice on several occasions but he has been mean way more times than he has been nice. And now you get down to it is his fathers story even really that terrible? Sure his father died, and that is a terrible thing, I can understand if he was acting that way as a kid but he is 17 now! It's time to grow up, He acts so immature! Why does winning mean that much to him that he would sacrifice the friendship he made with Haru and the others? His father's death gives him no right to be a jerk.

Yes his father's story IS really that terrible. Death is terrible no matter what. Sudden, accidental death can be forever scarring to the people they were close to. Compound that to the fact that his father, a swimmer, died because he DROWNED. Rin could possibly think that if his dad hadn't settled down to have him, he would've never become a fisherman in the first place because he made it sound like a shotgun wedding. This of course, doesn't give him a pass but

Laciie wasn't trying to give Rin a free pass on being a jerk. She was saying that what Rin said didn't seem like THAT much of a jerkish thing to begin with (a little douchey, but the amount of hate he's getting for it far outweighs what he did). A lot of people are mad not because this is the 'final straw' but because Haru is upset. Haru reasonably... shouldn't have been upset at all. He wanted to be free. He thinks Rin is "a pain". And as far as Rin knows, he doesn't like competitive swimming. In that context, what Rin said isn't particularly grievous. If Haru had said his usual, 'Do what you like', nobody would be pissed, and such a reaction would be reasonably expected from him. (Of course, Haru's upset because of some deep seated feelings or something. He probably values the rivalry with Rin more than he's let on and he definitely cares more about swim times than he says). Therefore, the reason Rin said what he did was not to purposefully, primarily hurt Haru.

But you know what, the opposite can be argued. The only fact is that both sides are just conjecture.

Its going to be interesting how they go with the technical side of things. When it comes to 100 free anyone knows you dont breathe every single arm in a sprint. But again i think its just for show because if they held their breath and kept their head down for most of the race i guess that would look lame. Also waiting for that butterfly swim and if he breathes every arm it will be terrible. FYI the more times you breath in fly or free the slower you go. but obviously there is a time you need to breath just not as often. But great ep for me :D

That's interesting cuz they show both. In the closeups they breathed every other stroke, and in the distance shots they didn't. haha.

Because to Rin, his father's dream > friendships he hadwhen he was a kid.

But but but, I get the feeling that he's going to realize that way of thinking is wrong.

I still don't know why everyone got so angry though? My reaction to the end was like: http://gifrific.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/08/shocked-will-smith.gif

I can agree with you on this point but until I see some hard evidence otherwise I'm sticking to my point that Rin is an angsty brat.

Now my opinions on Haruka and why this makes Rin's words even more hurtful and him just a jerk in general. When Haruka and Rin were 13 they had a race when Rin came back to Japan. Haruka easily won and Rin had a breakdown of sorts, creating a rift between them, subsequently causing Haruka to quit competitive swimming because he had hurt Rin's pride. You see all these years Rin has just been brooding and being miserable because he lost one race against his best friend (at the time) that sounds pretty immature to me. Haru is obviously upset that they aren't friends anymore and blames himself. And now Rin says that he will never swim with him again which is just pouring salt in the wound!!! Poor Haru-chan :( Rin is so stupid! >:(

Naw man, I think he was brooding more over the fact that even thought he went to a specialized swimming school and trained hard for a year, he still lost to someone who was unmotivated/indifferent towards competitive swimming.

That is also a part of it but it still doesn't discredit what I said. No matter what, in life there is always going to be people better than you at things. Haru beat him one time... So what!? Thats no reason to go and get all worked up about it! It's not a matter of life and death! it's just swimming, Haru knows that but Rin unfortunately does not.

Because for Haru swimming is an enjoyable activity. Haru doesn't like competitive swimming he only swims free. Swimming is a way Haru bonds with others apparently like that time he was teaching Rei to swim and when they were all younger or well pretty much any time they swim together he seems to enjoy it. Haru interprets Rin saying he will never swim with him again as him saying the two will never be friends again. And it is shown that Haru genuinely enjoyed hanging out with Rin when they were kids.

-And for Rin, swimming is a way of achieving what his dad sacrificed for him. So don't disregard "swimming" for Rin's, to try and make his actions seem shallow and then try and overemphasize for Haru make him look a victim. That ain't fair yo
-And idk where you ever read it being shown that Haru enjoyed being friends with Rin, because I read High Speed! and as much as I love him, Haru was prick. He often referred to Rin and Makoto as pains and was pretty standoffish. I know they were 'buddie' but Haru wasn't the friendliest person.

Rin treating swimming as a battle to be won simply because he "thinks" that's what his father wanted is stupid that's no reason to be mean to everyone. A battle to be won, a goal to be achieved, a barrier to break, etc, it just depends on how you choose to see it. I don't know why, but a lot of people keep saying that Rin knew Haru wanted to still be friends? Like what? When has that ever been made apparent? If anything I wouldn't be surprised if Rin thought Haru didn't like him. And victimize whomever you want, I don't really care.

All Rin wanted was to achieve a dream for his father, and he had to overtake Haru for that reason. Yes, there were times when Rin has been a douche, but there are also times when they show that he is caring. Him walking his sister back to her room, is an example. Yes, it's a small thing. But it shows that he is capable of caring for other people. Just because Haru likes Rin, how is Rin supposed to know that? Has Haru ever acted friendly towards Rin after that rift he created between the two of them? Haru has never outwardly shown, after that one incident, that he cares for Rin. Whether he really does care or not (which he clearly does, as we can see at the end of the episode) doesn't matter because he doesn't show it. Yes, Haru is a kuudere. But facts are facts. Of course Rin is going to assume that as well, that Haru doesn't care.

All in all, I'm not saying that Rin hasn't been an ass. Of course he has. But all he's been doing, all his life, is been trying to achieve one goal. Yes, you can also say that 'the outcome does not justify the means' but that is a philosophical debate that can go on forever. He's been burdening himself with the fact that he thinks that it might have been partly his fault that his father drowned, and he's been trying to achieve a dream that his father would have if he hadn't settled down. I understand it when people call Rin an ass because, well. He's done some things. But really, call him an ass and discredit his other areas? At least try to see his entire character first. Calling him an ass and discrediting him for other things is just being narrow minded.

'I will never swim with you again.' Is what Haru wanted. He wanted to be free. Understand that first. Haru was the one that wanted those words in the first place.

All my feels T_T I actually liked the dream at the beginning, it was pretty whack lol o_O So the kid in the photo he took was his dad huh ... and he died on a fisherman boat ... the same one as the one in Makoto's story?! At first I thought they'd be the same person but the ages don't match up ... still, kinda weird ... well I guess I understand his motivation now. Him visiting his dad's grave before the race was so d'aawww :')
Also I am growing to hate Nishida. He's so annoying D: JUST GO AWAY >_< (ALSO THEIR CAPTAIN IS VOICED BY VINCENT BOLD FROM SPACE BROS!!! Well I realized this a couple of episodes ago but still XD)
Finally the race between Rin and Haruka! It's not even in the finals either just the heats ... which means that only one of them passes ... AND IT'S RIN! Holy crap he got faster, pulling ahead so fast before the turn :O Gotta admit I was kinda surprised but not completely, I mean after all you can't just win all the time right? Looks like they'll "avenge" themselves in the relay though (speaking of which, I thought they decided not to enter that? Or did Rei's wish make it happen? Hmm ...) :O

It's not surprising that Haru lost. He haven't trained for a long time while Rin even went abroad to train.

Ha ha ha.
Isayama Hajime should be awarded The Manga with The Highest Inconsistencies of Characters' Appearances.
He keeps performing multiple plastic surgeries on those Shingeki No Kyojin characters in a SINGLE chapter.
Yes, I've read up to the latest chapter of Shingeki No Kyojin manga.
Forced myself to read through the kidsketching chapters after the anime's ended. At least from now on, I only have to go through the hell once a month.
Patiently awaiting SNK TV/movie/OVA anime-sequel.
The 2015 SNK live-action movie would probably suck.

I'm not really surprised Haru lost...
I was thinking the plot might turn that way to make things more dramatic.

The competition was awesome in itself, but goooood. Rin angst kinda made this episode mediocre.

I seriously didn´t expect that ending. Did haru lose the race on purpose?

woah I could feel the intensity while they were racing. Haru finished only a moment after Rin... How come he didn't advance when Rin did when the best 8 times advance? o.O or is it only the winner who advances? no matter if the one in second place is faster than another winner..? argh I'm confused. Rin was an ass. I officially hate him. I don't care about his family. He's an ass~ Go Go Haru! you'll win next time with a bang! I'm sure there will be a next time!!!!! :}
