Here's a link to knowyourmemes page on the subject: Shaft Head Tilt

I'm watching Bakemonogatari at the moment, and the fact the characters seem to have super weak necks is kinda bugging me. The head tilts look weird to me, but what do you guys think?

It's immersion-breaking, annoying, and I laugh at how stupid it is.

Shinbou/ Watanabe* head tilt.

It follows the people, not the studio.

See: Grisaia (Watanabe + 8bit = still head tilts)

Thanks for the info, however it is known as Shaft Head Tilt so I'm going to call it that. What do you think about the head tilting?

It's a stylistic choice that at this point doesn't bother me much. It's actually entertaining to count the number of headtilts per episode in anything Shinbo directs.

Is like raise the chin for looking down on someone but with the added effect of turning your back at them so is like it boost the first action.

Of course is not used like this every time but the thing is that it is a new gesture up to interpretation that enriches the non verbal part of the ommunication

Hmm, I can see what you mean, but I think they could have gone for a more realistic way of depicting non-verbal communication.

Really.

I cringe slightly every time I see someone saying "Shaft Head Tilt", or "Shaft Style". It's the director, not the studio, who comes up with these aesthetic choices. It's also cringe inducing when people conflate animation with everything related to style. Animation is about movement, and the style of movements; it has nothing to do with character design or color.

Anyway.

Akiyuki Shinbou. Learn the name. He's the reason many of you like Shaft.

Regarding Shinbou Head Tilts, I like them. I also like the exaggerated poses he often uses. They make the visuals less normal and more interesting to look at. However, Shinbou wasn't the first to do this. Arguably, his style may have been influenced by the work of Kunihiko Ikuhara. Shoujo Kakumei Utena, directed by Ikuhara, is full of exaggerated poses, and it has a few head tilts.

I thought both him and Shinbou were influenced by Dezaki (the head tilt is even inspired by one of his works).

It wouldn't surprise me if they were influenced by him. Osamu Dezaki was a genius.

Aw damn now I have to recall the Zetsubou MAEDAX censorship.

Or that time when Shinbo a bit drunk and start to use real life objects as 'art' replacement in Pani Poni Dash, and Negima, and Zetsubou, and everywhere else but Madoka.

I like it a lot. Mainly because its just so funny how they execute it in certain anime. Every time I see it in a non-shaft anime I already get the feeling that studio must have gotten Shinbou's help for that part or episode.

Au contraire, I find the series's pseudo-pretentiousness quite entertaining to watch.

Also, quite interesting to note that Shinbou probably never would've achieved popularity had he not been picked up by SHAFT.

Why.

The entire Monogatari animation in particular is about overstatement and exaggeration - it's part of what makes the series visually interesting, you don't think Senjougahara actually fell down a massive spiral staircase do you? Araragi and her walk back down that same staircase after their first confrontation.

Also as for Shinbou vs Shaft head tilt - let's be honest he's basically just a Shaft director now so I don't have a problem with the style being associated with the studio. The last non-Shaft show he directed was Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha 11 years ago...and his style wasn't as pronounced as it is now. Even if they make an anime without him at this point they are known for using an interesting style so whoever replaces him will have to continue that in some way.

Agreed. I need to get back to watching something from him.

Ikuhara has said so himself, anyway. Onii-sama and Versailes seem like a real influence on Utena in particular.

Movie 1st in comparison really lacks something visually, which might be explained by Shinobu's involvement in the first season.

Well, that part is clearly obvious, also about Ikuhara obsession of roses, lol.

It's a very fun, interesting stylistic choice which makes the series memorable. I've watched a handful of shaft productions that used this style. Overall it definitely adds something . I don't remember feeling it was being overly used or looking too exaggerated to be irksome.

I have to admit it makes it stand out of the crowd. The style and animation are, in my opinion, the best part. Otherwise it is quite boring...

Can I take that as Monogatari series having very similar seasons?
I'm not enjoying the first one, so is it worth to continue watching?

I'm guessing you're starting on bakemono? Second season has some excellent arcs. I won't spoil, but if you find it intolerable nobody's forcing you to watch it.

How about Reina in Hibike! Euphonium? Is that a "head tilt?" In general when girls are posed like that in anime I just see it as a being coy or mysterious.

Second season, not nisemonogatari, just in case that wasn't clear (since chronologically the "second season" is technically nisemonogatari, but that's nowhere near as good as bake/second season and infamous for being fanservice heavy).

EVERY anime made by Shaft has the head rolls. If I see the head roll, I immediately now it's made by Shaft. Bakemonogatari, Mekakucity Actors, and Nisekoi all the head rolls, and they're all made by Shaft.

I've said Shaft 4 times already.

Just giving my personal opinion but I also did not like Bakemonogatari initially but by episode 12 ish it kinda grew on me and I enjoyed later seasons even more. Some of the arcs in Second season were also one of the best anime I've ever watched imo

A character moving their head slightly isn't anywhere even close to being something of importance or even notice.

But because it's repeated I guess it now screams unholy significance and SYMBOLIZM and DEEP MEANING. Because fans of convoluted pretentious harems need to justify why their show is actually mature and deep and not just an excuse for fanservice.
