Just watched TO http://myanimelist.net/anime/7279/TO/, Two 40 min CG classic sci fi stories. First one is Elliptical Orbit.
Fifteen years after its last contact with our world, a space freighter known as the Flying Dutchman requests permission to dock at a remote moon base. This mysterious ship carries liquid protons: a power source essential to the survival of Earth’s population. But before the precious cargo can be delivered, the base is ambushed by galactic terrorists who seek to destroy a Moon base by using the liquid protons and issue a death sentence to muchl of humanity.

The second is called Symbiotic Planet:
Earth is running out of resources so ships have spread out over the galaxy to find new worlds to colonize and find resources to send back to Earth. They find a world with bizarre alien life forms. Aon and Elena – star-crossed lovers from rival countries competing for valuable natural resources – struggle to build a life together despite the objections of their superiors. Their budding romance is thwarted by an outbreak of alien fungus and the interference of a cutthroat militaristic madman. To survive, the young couple must maintain their faith in each other and learn to trust the unique creatures which inhabit this strange and wondrous new world.

I enjoyed both episodes. The CG was good as far as the ships and backgrounds go but the people were a little stiff, lacking expression to a degree. I watched it on Funimation. I gave it a 8/10

I finished watching all 3 movies of Berserk Golden Age Arc. I gave each movie a score of 8 which is the same score I gave the original series. Truth be known, I actiually liked the series better. This movie set sure made me realize just how great the art in the original series is. Cosca is much prettier in the original as well, but Grifith is even more attractive in the movies. The movies are basically a retelling of the original story with a few additional scenes and some expanded scenes at the end. I may have to raise the rating for the series, but I will think about it for awhile.

A couple completed yesterday. First was Le Chevalier D'Eon. This was one I had not watched in nearly 5 years. I watched it, this time subbed. This is very loosely based on a real character. The story is loaded with supernatural and magical events. As I remember, it was better in English. but it wasn't great either way. I gave it a 5 this time.

The second was Yami Shibai. This is a collection of very short ghost or urban legend stories. The art is very different than we usually see in anime. It is more like paper cutouts that move. I think it added to the atmosphere. Often humerous to me, I gave it a 7.

Just watched a cute one-shot about Tezuka Osamu that was made in '95. Osuma to Musashi. You can watch all 18 minutes of it on YouTube. There are some Japanese writing, but it's so beautiful you won't need to worry about it.

I watched a few good ones this past month. Sakurasou no Pet na Kanojo and Dusk Maiden of Amnesia were both pretty good. Sakurasou reminded me a lot of Toradora, with its mix of characters. Ergo Proxy was dark, bleak, and heavy with symbolism; just the kind of dystopian sci-fi story I enjoy.

My favorite of the shows I've recently seen is Watamote. Those socially awkward characters make for some funny scenes, and it's the closest show to Welcome to the NHK that I've found so far, with dark humor mixed in with some rather sad parts.

So, over the last month... I have finished all 6 SEASONS of Major, the Major Movie, and both Major OVAs. WHEW!!! What a ride!!! But totally worth it!!!

Yes, it is a typical sports anime. A lot of it is very predictable, but, unlike many, the main protagonist doesn't ALWAYS come out on top. And there are several emotional moments (especially the first season).

Would recommend the entire series for any baseball/sports anime fan. :3

Just finished an enjoyable comedy, romance called http://myanimelist.net/anime/990/Kamisama_Kazoku/God Family. A god and goddess live in the human world and have 3 children, 2 are goddesses in training and the boy, Samatarou, is learning human customs and habits so that he will become a better god. Tenko is a angel assigned to look after Samatarou and lives with the god family. Samatarou just wants to be a normal human High school student and falls in love with a human girl. Complications develop and Tenko is conflicted to say the least.
I found this show very enjoyable, funny with some darker moments and good characters. I did find Samatarou a little irritating at times as he was portrayed as the typical clueless boy when it comes to women and love but it all works out with a satisfactory ending.

For those who watched and appreciated Barefoot Gen, I just found 2 more movies that dealt with the war from a Japanese childs’ point of view. The first, which I just finished is called http://myanimelist.net/anime/1329/Rail_of_the_Star:_A_True_Story_of_Children/
I found it on Stupid BT as Ohoshi-sama no Rail Complete_Movie. It tells the true story of Kobayashi Chitose, a young Japanese girl growing up in a Japanese-occupied North Korea. After Japan lost the war, the Koreans, fed up with years of Japanese rule and persecution, have joined forces with a Chinese-backed communist government and are systematically making life a living horror for the Japanese left in North Korea. Fearing reprisal since he was a Japanese veteran, Chitose's father risks everything to get his family out of the north and to the US-occupied area south of the 38th parallel.
This was a very well done anime, with the exception of the video quality, and worth the watch.

In a similar vein we have http://myanimelist.net/anime/2753/Ushiro_no_Shoumen_Daare/ or on Stupid BT Who's Left Behind?. This 1.5 hr movie is based on original creator Kayoko Ebina's real life experience during World War 2 on Showa era. It’s about Kayoko, a young girl in 1940 who does her patriotic duty to help the war effort by donating her favorite dolly, whose materials could help build explosives. Time passes, and as she grows older, Kayoko sees how the war has affected her life and those around her. Nothing can prepare her for 1945, however, and the bleak times that are soon to come.
I have not seen this one yet but it looks good.

Moving on, I just watched the 2001 movie Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust. This is a beautifully artistic animation, great characters, violence and romance. It's a traditional vampire story about a half breed vampire bounty hunter trying to return a kidnapped beauty to her father, but it takes place in the future. The dub was very good also. This would make a good anime of the week. I found a hi-quality version on Stupid BT.

I just finished Space Battleship Yamato 2199. Note that I haven’t watched the original series so I can’t compare the two but I saw enough of Matsumoto’s work as a kid to appreciate the incredible amount of care and respect (and budget…) that went into retelling this monument of Japanese animation. The result is an awesome space opera that feels both deliciously retro (that wonderful opening song!) and strangely current (that fan service!), with some jaw dropping sequences (the attention to details is unbelievable at times), lovable characters (and plenty of new ones to boot), great pacing and lots of emotional moments. I gave it a 9 and highly recommend it.

Just because basketball and baseball and cycling wasn’t quite enough, I added street car racing to my Fall lineup with Initial D (First Stage). This is a true niche series: character design is the stuff of nightmares, the plot pretty much inexistent and the back and forth between classic animation and CG bone jarring. But if you like fast Japanese cars, twisty mountain roads, pumping Eurobeats and a boatload of drifting, this show is a riot. So much so that I couldn’t help but follow up with Fourth Stage and Fifth Stage. If you don’t, well… you're probably better off staying the heck away from it.

I also finished Danshi Koukousei no Nichijou/The Daily Lives of High School Boys and what a gem it is. The show isn’t afraid to make fun of its own genre (and the gazillion of girl-centric comedies Japan produces every year). The “boys will be boys” situations are absolutely hilarious, the voice actors stellar (Sugita Tomokazu KILLS IT!) and the short skid format (at about 6 or so per episode) keeps it all fresh and peppy. I gave it an 8 (my highest-rated comedy so far) and I highly recommend it.

I just watched the incredible movie Asura. This unrelentingly dark drama follows the struggles of a young feral boy who did whatever it took to survive during a time of war and famine in medieval Japan. The movie, by Toei Animation, is beautifully animated and a work of art in itself. The film is hard to watch at times, but it is also beautiful. Asura goes from being a wild animal to finding his humanity. Don’t miss this amazing story.

A realistic story about a brother and sister, Mirai and Yuuki, with the help of an older woman, Mari, who try to make it back home after a Magnitude 8 earthquake hits Tokyo. It's slow paced but beautiful, touching, with a sad but overall good ending. Enjoyed it very much.

Just finished Saki and Captain Harlock. A little bit of the new and old together. If you are looking for cute girls with lots of blushing playing a good game of Mahjong then Saki is for you. @Jym, 42 isn’t too bad, I am still working on 110 of LoGH and 161 of Ranma 1/2. Also, 42 is the answer, so it definitely cannot be bad. ;) Haven't seen the movie will probably check it out at some point.

Just finished Nabari no Ou, which is a story of emotional ninjas. If you are looking for a lot of fighting and less talking about feelings then this is not your anime, but if you like stories about the emotional development of a character you should pick this up. On a side note the art, at least in my opinion, is very nice.

I have all four seasons of the Future GPX franchise. I started the first. I just need to spend the time on it. Maybe when the winter season begins. It seems every other season has a lull.
I also like The Daily Lives of High School Boys. I was hoping for another season of both Daily Lives and Kimi no Boku.

I just finished Arrietta and Gatchaman Crowds. I was a bit disappointed in Arrietta because of the storyline. There were to many unanswered questions in it to make it thoroughly enjoyable. Maybe if they spend the money and put in another half hour. Other than that, the artwork was first rate.

I tend to rate anime on my emotional involvement with the story, the unique storytelling and the depth to the characters. I will overlook lapses in logic, a few plot holes and the laws of physics. It’s a fantasy, not real life. With that in mind, I thoroughly enjoyed and was captivated by Zetsuen no Tempest: The Civilization Blaster. It’s got Action, Mystery, Psychological Drama, Fantasy, Romance and quite a bit of Magic.

From the MAL Synopsis I quote “One day, a sorceress princess was stuffed into a barrel and banished to a desert island.
One day, a single girl was suddenly murdered, and the culprit still runs free.
And one day, a battle spanning time and space over magic and revenge began!
Sanity and madness, sense and intelligence, self-confidence and convictions.
The tragic tale of this irrational world starts now.”

Couple that with lots of references to Shakespeare's "Hamlet" and the "Tempest".

Lots of twists and turns are keeping me on the edge of my seat. I know not everyone shares my taste in anime but I highly recommend this series. Check it out.

Happy New Year.

I finished Coppelion and enjoyed the ride but don't know who I'd recommend it too.... Dreary, discolored, post-apocalyptic, genetically engineered chicks are sent in to go help victims after nuclear fall out in japan. I liked it, I don't know if others would.

I recently finished the EL Hazard Magnificent World 7 episode set. Not bad, not great but not bad. I'll continue on for a bit. Kid is brought to some other place back in time after meeting a girl, when he gets back in time he's forced to pretend HE's a girl, and the girl that sent him back in time is not only evil but has no idea who he is......the ova kinda stops before the story starts so more to come there I suppose.

Blood Lad, was just another lackluster story that perhaps with another season might not have been a waste of my time entirely. It's animation style was great but not much else there. Vampire wants a virgin chicks blood I think was how it began? I don't even know but honestly unless you're really looking for fluff I would probably pass.

I watched Fate Stay/Night for the first time ever and enjoyed it, it came recommended to me by many. With summoned people doing battle for the Holy Grail and a singular wish. It was Good, enough so that I will pick up zero later on this year when it's less fresh in my mind. (Zero being a prequel)

And probably the craziest of 2013, Attack On titan: was alot of fun, but I swear on next Kwanza there had better be more. That's all I'm gonna say, I don't want to rant and this post is long enough. Giants devouring humanity, forcing us to live behind mile high walls for protection. Roger Waters is proud.

I'm watching Kill La Kill and it's so absurd I'm enjoying it. It is however another one that I do not know who to reccomend it to. It's from the team that does gurren lagann and that's written all over it. but they are two different stories. Living Clothing that initially needed to feed off blood but by the midway point that doesn't seem to be an issue. luckily no one's anemic. Now it's obscure highschool battles....what? But this one rolls into next season.........recommended but to the right person.

Just finished Seirei no Moribito, Angel Cop, and Steins;Gate.

Seirei no Moribito is about a female bodyguard who ends up with the task of guarding a young boy who has a spirit within him. The story follows these two through their adventures on the run. This is a well done fantasy story with characters you will enjoy watching the entire time.

Angel Cop is a late 80s anime that is so cliché it is awesome, with psychics, terrorists, Porsche 911 used as a rocket launcher, big hair, big shoulders and lots of violence all in six episodes. This anime is not going to win any awards, but it was fun to watch.

Finally, Steins;Gate. Basically, this is a story about time traveling and the consequences of time travel. Just watch it, you will enjoy every minute.

It's a futuristic action adventure about a teen prostitute who is saved from the brink of death by rebuilding her body with reinforced synthetic fiber. Time travel is one subject that just messes with my head big time. I get headaches from it trying to straighten it out. The Star Trek franchise really messed me up with because of the loops they formed and, in some cases, the rubber effect of time travel. Gawd!!!

Anyways, I've finished a few series since I last was here.
1) Little Busters ~Refrain~
2) Little Busters: Sekai no Saitou was Ore ga Mamaru
3) Puchitte Garganti (just chibi shorts of Garganti)
4) Monogatari: Season Season
5) Sword Art One: Extra Edition
6) Mayoi Neko Overrun! For all that is sacred, please don't watch it.

Not long ago, I mentioned "Maria-sama ga Miteru" in the "currently watching" thread. I have just finished the fourth and final season. After I give it some thought, I plan to write a review. I gave the entire series a 10 rating, and while I hesitate to pick a favorite anime series since there is such variety that it can be hard to compare certain series, this one would have to be a candidate. It probably ties with "Sayonara, Zetsubou Sensei" for the most memorable anime I have watched so far. In fact, it would make my list of favorites of all serialized programming, including animated series, live-action TV series, radio shows, and theatrical serials.

Characterization is the greatest strength of this series. Certainly, many characters fit into stock-character roles, but the major characters are all individuals, and they all grow and change over time. Unlike many school series, the story does not center on overt romance; it is an exploration of very close friendships that have some of the characteristics of romantic relationships. The passage of time is not ignored in this school series; high school is a time of transition. When the new school year starts, new people enter the scene and change the group dynamic. Above all, it is a coming of age story, certainly a popular genre, and it is a very good example. Additionally, it explores the hierarchical nature of Japanese culture by exaggerating it, but also by bridging the gap between levels in the hierarchy. It also has its share of melodrama, but it survives its melodramatic exaggeration through the strength of its characters; this series can get away with stunts that would doom a series with lesser characters.

Though its technical characteristics would earn a 10 rating from me, this series has additional appeal. After the first few episodes, I had connected with it emotionally, and this connection stayed with me until the end; this is the reason that it makes my short list of favorites. I hate to see it end, and I hope more episodes are made, but this is looking unlikely since it has been quite a few years since the fourth season. Light novel volumes continue the story beyond the anime, but official English translations do not exist, although there seem to be fan translations on the web.
It is pitch black. You are likely to be eaten by a grue.

Just watched an interesting Chinese animated feature film called The Monkey King: Uproar in Heaven. I quote from the synopsis: “… directed by Wan Laiming and produced by all four of the Wan brothers. The film was created at the height of the Chinese animation industry in the 1960s, and received numerous awards. It earned the brothers domestic and international recognition.
The story is based on the earliest chapters of the classic story Journey to the West. The main character is Sun Wukong, aka the Monkey King, who rebels against the Jade Emperor of heaven.
It became one of the most influential films in all of Asia, animation or not. Countless cartoon adaptations that followed have reused the same classic story Journey to the West, yet many consider this 1964 iteration to be the most original, fitting and memorable.”

It’s worth the watch. I found a fan restored copy at Stupid BT with English dub of narration and English subs.

Just finished Aoi Hana, Shingeki no Kyojin and Saki: Achiga-hen with Specials:

First I would like to note that I am currently reading the manga for Shingeki no Kyojin and completed the Aoi Hana manga.

Aoi Hana is a slice of life and shoujo ai story of two girls who were good friends when younger children then one of the girls moved away. Later they meet each other again in highschool, which is where the story begins. You see the two girls work through their first year of highschool while reacquainting with each other, making new friends and dealing with new experiences. The anime adapts the very beginning of the manga. Both are very good and if you do decide to watch the short anime, then I highly suggest you finish the story by reading the manga.

Shingeki no Kyojin is set in a world ruled by naked zombie-like giants, where what is left of humanity is working to survive inside what is left of their past. The anime follows the beginning of the manga pretty well and does a very good job of telling the story. The manga is currently still coming out and much further along than the anime. I think I will probably skip the second season and stick with the manga they are so much alike.

Saki: Achiga-hen is the same as the first season of Saki, except for this time the story focuses on a different set of cute girls from a different school playing Mahjong. Again, if you like cute girls doing cute things while playing a flashy game of Mahjong then you should pick this up. The second season of Saki is currently airing now.

I loved this anime so much. Oruchuban Ebichu (Ebichu, The Housekeeping Hamster) - A gag anime about a talking cute little Hamster that does house chores for her master, a 25 yr old Office Lady who has a cheating worthless boyfriend. Ebichu loves her master and will do anything to keep her happy, but often incurs her wrath and is beaten bloody for it. But Ebichu always remains cheerful and upbeat.
It is violent, and outrageously obscene but oh so adorable and funny. Not for the kiddies. Great translation notes at the beginning of the episodes. Give it a watch, it has my seal of approval.

Now for something completely different.
I’m sorry that I can’t remember who it was that recommended these wonderful Children’s movies. But they are great for adults also. They both have similar themes of animals that are natural enemies to each other forming friendships with each other. The first was Arashi no Yoru (Stormy Night]. A wolf and a goat meet in a dark shack during a stormy night. They are unable to see or smell each other and strike up a conversation and find they have things in common. A heartwarming story of a difficult friendship ensues.
The second movie is
Omae Umasou da na (You are Umasou). Despite the cartoony look of the characters it has a similar feel to the first movie. It’s a heartwarming and suspenseful story of a T-Rex named Heart raised by plant eaters who becomes father to a baby Ankylosaurus he names "Umasou (looks delicious). Heart struggles with the fact that he must kill and eat meat to survive despite caring for and loving plant eaters who are his natural prey. Both stories are very well done and worth the watch.

Finally finished Unbreakable Machine-Doll. I thought it had an interesting premise, fighting dolls controlled by a human puppeteer. But I was disappointed with it, didn't live up to my expectations. First season ended unresolved but I probably won't watch it if they continue. Anyone here see it and what did you think of it?

Completed: Koihime Musou, Shin Koihime Musou and Shin Koihime Musou: Otome Tairan and their respective OVAs:

Basically, this is a set of series that tell the story of a girl heading out on a journey to rid the world of evil and along the way she picks up a few friends… make that a lot of friends and most of them being women. This is not a series you pick up for the intellectual or coherent plot. You pick it up for the big boobs, panty shots, lots of dirty jokes and all around ecchi moments and if you pay attention you might catch a story. Nice brainless fun.

Well, I'm only three episodes in, but I'm enjoying UMD so far. As for what I've finished:

Love Live School Idol Project
The last three episodes tugged at the heartstrings as drama interrupted all the cuteness of this show about high school girls having formed an idol unit, but the ending was quite satisfying. However, the saga of Muse isn't over as season two is supposed to start (in Japan anyway, I'm hoping Crunchyroll will simulcast) in April.

Girls und Panzer
In the last two episodes, Miho battles her stern older sister to determine who's Tankery style is better. I'll admit I was on the edge of my seat during the last episode. If you're a fan of cute girls driving tanks, this is the show for you!

Just finished a strange one, Chirin no Suzu (Ringing Bell or Bell of Chirin). This starts off as a Bambi like kiddy movie of a lamb frolicking in the meadow with his Mother. This goes on for half the movie. Then the big bad wolf appears and kills his mother.
. No longer a children's movie. Not great, but worth the watch.

Just finished 3 good anime series. I felt that they all had appealing characters, good story and great dialogue.

Heaven’s Memo Pad. It's a mystery series with a loli hacker, honorable gang members and assorted characters who all classify themselves as Neets. Liked it a lot.

Pandora Hearts. It's got an Alice in Wonderland references coupled with demonic possession; secret cults and the Black Abyss. Loved it.

The World Reflected in the Eyes of a Girl Looking Up at the Heavens. Story about a girl who could see floating islands of the Gods. She gets involved in a heavenly war that could destroy everything. Great characters and good writing.

Wish a few more people would post here.
Well anyway-
Just watched a great children's movie that hasn't been seen by many people yet. It's a CG animation that came out in Dec. 2011 titled Friends: Mononoke Shima no Naki. It's about a very young child that is stranded on a forbidden island filled with monsters. Think Pixar's Monsters, Inc.
It's a touching story and enjoyable for old farts as well as the young-uns.

Finished Say "I Love You" the other night. A charming 13 episode series along the lines of Kimi ni Todoke where an introverted girl catches the eye of the most handsome boy in school and, through trial and error, become quite the devoted couple. Well worth watching.

Completed Kaiba.

This is a short series I highly recommend watching. It is a love story with a sci-fi setting in a world where memories and bodies are a trading commodity. The story starts with a young man who has no memories. All he has is a pendant with a picture of a girl around his neck. You follow this young man through different worlds as he searches for his lost self. The art is much different than the typical anime style, but it still has a cute quality while being dream-like. This is a very good story with unique animation. As I said before, I highly recommend watching this show.

I second that. Kaiba is an Artistic Masterpiece that should be required viewing for all anime fans.

Just finished Psycho Pass. Great story, writing and characters. Takes place in a future Japan which has closed itself off from the rest of the world. It’s a near perfect society, free from most crime, poverty and hunger because of a country wide network called Sibyl. Sibyl can read a persons potential to commit crimes and sends Investigators and Enforcers to catch these people with high crime potential.

This is a Japanese version of Minority Report starring Tom Cruise and based on a story by Philip K. Dick.

I quote from a review by jawnmewn “With thought-provoking dialogue and plot, an amount of drama and tension that is neither excessive nor underwhelming, and a group of characters that are just as complex as many of us, Psycho Pass delivers an action sci-fi show unlike one we've seen before.”

Psycho Pass had been such a delightful surprise when I watched it, I had been in the mood for something a bit more mature, chose it and was not sorry. They are supposed to be coming out with season 2 soon, looking forward to that greatly!
