| Honestly I think the biggest factor in how anime looks also comes from the direction, directors have improved a lot over the years and have started having their own style and that benefits the anime's quality greatly, I tend to find older anime kinda boring because of weak direction more so than weak animation/art. |

And you're right, today tons of anime have low quality art and animation, but they still look more or less good. Sometimes very good art can make up for lack of good animation and vice versa. Though I never really cared about the art, I can watch anything. |

That's an interesting thing to say. You might be right, with how any director now can more easily put things together thanks to digital editing, compared to older days, when often being a distinctive director requires being a head animator or being particulary hands-on. |

I do wonder if you genuinely 'don't care' about art though, because from what you've said, your aesthetic preferences do come into your judgement of things here, and I think that's inescapable for most of us. Then again, if we become familairised with the particular era's prevailing artstyles or a particular show's designs, then it tends to becom a non-issue, true. So it's probably a more subtle and negligible issue that comes up when we start comparing shows and discussing animation. I hope I"m not coming acrosss as frustratingly anal or anything, but I've not really worked out my thoughts on this stuff either, so I'm getting something out of this even if it seems I'm being a pointlessly stubborn dog. |
