Whether proper build-up and foreshadowing is required - probably depends on the story/genre. For example, with battle-shounen, we tend to expect abilities or changes in power levels to be explained. A sudden appearance of a new sort of ability could be seen as an 'asspull', but it wouldn't necessarily be a bad thing for the work. It'd probably imply the author hadn't thought this up beforehand - hadn't planned things out - but those aren't necessarily an inherently bad thing either. It really just depends, but essentially, the term 'asspull' is a word charged with agenda. |
