I love the detail that they put into this show, especially that they find real classics that fit the situation. I loved how they played “Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy” from the Nutcracker when the Pravda Captain and Sub-Captain were talking to Ooarai.

It’s a shame to see Miho fall into a classic leadership trap, but what is worse is that I doubt the show will ever point it out. A leader, especially a in the military, can’t be friends with their subordinates. Miho is so worried about being liked that she made a bad decision to appease her friends. Miho’s word needs to be absolute on the battlefield, and it is extremely difficult to do that with friends. Favoritism or the appearance of favoritism can also sink a team, but there doesn’t appear to be much of that yet.

You know, I'm not Russian but after listening to the song so often I can't help but root for Russia now lol.

Lots of people really loved the sequence where they sang that Russian song. But there is a problem affecting at least some non-Japanese fans that comes as quite a surprise. I'll quote in part from a related news story that explains what happened.

"
Girls und Panzer episode 8 censored? Give us our Russian schoolgirl duet back!
Jeff Chuang, Associate Editor 8:01 PM on 12.06.2012
The Crunchyroll stream for this week's Girls und Panzer appeared on Wednesday night, after the obligatory 2-day delay from the initial Japanese broadcast. It was missing something. It turns out that the rather epic segment where sort-of-Russian schoolgirls singing "Katyusha," the Soviet folk song made popular during WWII, was unceremoniously cut from the Crunchyroll stream. The cut footage details a "Russian" tank battalion rolling down the snow-covered landscape in their match with the protagonists' Sensha-do (the art of tank battle) team. It's rather epic, you see, because columns of T-34 tanks are awesome; because hearing Russophile voice actress Sumire Uesaka singing in her pretty-good Russian is awesome. What is probably not as awesome is copyright law. While the copyright reason is the most likely why the segment was cut, Crunchyroll has not confirmed that precisely. We did get word that they were given this Katyusha-free version for broadcast from the licensor, and the end credit reflects the same when it excluded the credits for the Katyusha cover. It's always kind of sad when international legal red tape gets in our way. The worst part is not even how it blocked possibly the most climatic moment of the episode from being seen, but how it only pains those of us who want to stay legit through one of the legal streams. "

However, my computer was temporarily frozen by something on that page, so my suggestion is that you don't visit that webpage yourself. That is why I changed the URL a little bit by adding spaces so that it won't work.

Mako Reizei (冷泉 麻子) is the sleepy but intelligent driver for the Ankou team's Panzer IV. She can also drive a Renault Char B1 bis on snow. Here are two pieces of tangentially-related trivia of great interest to Mako's fans:

On the Japanese Wikipedia entry for Girls und Panzer, the white ribbon in Mako's hair is described as a 白いカチューシャ. 白い = white. カチューシャ = katyusha. In other words, it is a "white katyusha". The Russian spelling of "katyusha" is Катюша. The word "katyusha" has many meanings. However, if you do a Google Image search for 白いカチューシャ you will see lots of pictures of women with a white ribbon in their hair. If you do a Google Image search for "katyusha hair ribbon" you will also see some similar pictures. However, it is pretty clear that "katyusha" almost never means "hair ribbon" in the English speaking world.

In Japanese, Mako's name is 麻子. However, if somebody sees those two kanji, there are two possible pronunciations. It could be "Mako" or it could be "Asako". Both of these are possible girls' names. A key feature of Japanese is that a given kanji has two ways it can be pronounced, and often more than that. But if you say "asa", that sounds like the kanji 朝 which means "morning". If we call Reizei-san "Asako" then it is like calling her "Morning girl". And she is definitely not a morning person. So "Mako" seems to be the best pronunciation.

Now since the OST is already out with longer version of Katyusha...
Seems like they made Kanemoto sing most of the song rather than Uesaka

6 tanks versus 15. These kids need to play Advance Wars and learn that super offense is dumb, especially when you're outnumbered.

True, but using tools that are commonly found in a high school are funny. Pravda school may be a school with very solid credential for industry design and drawing lol.
So MAL finally starts locking news threads that are only a few weeks old?

I wonder where was the announcement of this change? Or we are seeing yet another case of changes made that impacted users but not communicated to them?

I wonder how long people would put up with this.

As much as I have a bunch of information to share about anime announced recently I cannot share it in news board, and the anime series is too disorganized and chaotic to share information except with people already interested in the particular series.

"Operation Uranus"

The overconfident Oarai girls fell for Pravda's encirclement strategy, huh. Funny one of the girls mentioned Stalingrad, this episode in several ways mirror the actual WWII-era Battle of Stalingrad.

We'll see if they can manage to effect a breakthrough from encirclement. I found it annoying that the student council balked at telling Miho the truth until the most critical moment. That's going to be a major blow to morale.

The enemy team is almost entirely composed of T-34 tanks. Aside from being outnumbered and encircled, Miho is in dire straits because the real-life Russian T-34 was developed as a counter to the real-life German Panzer IV.

Hey, that "Nuts!" line was a reference to a real-life response to a request for surrender in WWII's Western Front.

More Darjeeling. <3

Epic episde especially that part when they started singing russian songs (since i'm ukranian i understand it),and i was very funny because i never heared before a russian song singed by anime character with a strange accent :D
However i knew that it was a trap because it was too easy, they even didn't heared what Miho said to them...

Episode that is very balanced in the narrative, it gives space to the developments taking place in the team of Ooarai and meanwhile we introduce new characters.
Then a large space in the battle, which does not shine for evil at first, but gives the best in the second half.
The plot continues the story very well, showing also the shortcomings of Miho as a commander, you let go instead of keeping with the steady hand the team and the strategy to be adopted on the battlefield.
Not bad designs, excellent CG this time. Characters in continuous evolution, good soundtrack.

So how come is every other school besides Oarai themed after an occidental country even though the students are all Japanese? Are they all filled with Westaboos?

Also, I laughed when the Tetris theme started playing.

This show is interesting. Although I have to say Miho's teamates are pretty damn stupid. 1 they didn't listen to her from the start. 2 they ran right into that trap and lead there commander there. because well she can't really leave them there by themselves even if Miho does no it's a trap. Miho was right at the start just her team mates are to stupid to listen. Also i thought it was funny how Saori askes why that tank was running away and the other girl replied "Maybe because we are chasing them. (Use sure it's not because there setting you up in a trap?)

Anyways her team needs to listen better that one thing that's for sure if you ask me.

"When I hear snow, Russia and battle, I think of.."
"Stalingrad"

So, today we have Soviet Union. Word "Pravda" in slavic languages ("prawda" in Polish, but you can pronounce it as "pravda". "Ł" sounds more like english "w" in polish language) means "the truth", so for slavic wievers title may have another meaning to it ("We're fighting Pravda!" -> "We're fighting the truth" -> "we censor/we are in denial").

Besides, considering soviets' tendency for blatant propaganda, the name couldn't be more ironic.

Hm... both Polish and Russian are slavic languages... Yet, despite being Polish, I barely understood just a couple of words from the song (apple tree (jabłoń), pear tree (grusza) and "on something/someone high/tall" (na wysokim)).

Not following your commander's orders to be careful and rush in, only to get surprised with a trap? Not very smart move if you ask me.

Wait, they gonna shutdown the school if they lose with soviets? I guess that next episode is going to be pretty intense.

I don't think it makes such a deep sense.
«Pravda» is the name of a newspaper that appeared at the beginning of the 20th century. I think that is how the name appeared.

Since it had not been discussed in the previous episode, as soon as it is possible here is that the narration devotes time to the new tank and to the changes made with the new pieces to the chariot of the protagonists. Yay! Finally the team of Sodoko and companions, takes the field. The narration shows the adversaries, their character and gives space also to the characters and their mood and also what hides the plot. The fight and the action is not bad, not very engaging in the first phase, better the final part, with the girls of the Oorai cornered and the final twist. Beautiful the song performed by the Pravda team.

Расцветали яблони и груши...

Man I love this song. As a person who's really into russian war and folk songs, I absolutely love this episode. I sang along with the Katyusha song. Man I'm happy.

Soviets aside tho, I hope they manage to get out of that church somehow and beat the flag tank. I kinda expected the school to be closed if they don't win, it's a pretty easy conclusion to draw.

Three hours, eh. Is there no time limit in these tank battles? That would be peculiar if there wasn't. Two teams playing a game of cat and mouse for six hours straight, wouldn't be fun. I suppose there is the fact that they have limited shells too, so fighting wouldn't/shouldn't last that long. Hmm.

That roulette wheel sure did spin in Pravda's favour, huh. Must feel good to have the home-field advantage.

It's probably not the best time to mention that your school is on the line during a semi-final bout, but then again, it did just slip out.

I like Katyusha. She's so fun and kawaii... Destroy them, my little master!!!

I had to press dislike even though I think this episode is well made.

Why didn't the student council tell them at the outset what is at stake? It's infuriating.

Also, Miho is a weak leader. Sure, they were lucky that she can improvise, but it's bad optics if you are unable to execute a solid and well thought out plan.

Furthermore, the other teams are moving opposite from what Miho had in mind. In the army, they would've been court martialed for insubordination.

As a result of it, they were caught in a trap. It's common sense that a top team shouldn't be underestimated, which they did! ugh!

ETA: I nearly forgot, I love how they included a Russian song.
