waaay back in the 80's, belle and sebastion, unico and speed racer. however i didn't know they were japanese or understand the concept of anime. in the 90's i ran across ranma 1/2, urusei yatsura, heroic legend of arislan and fist of the north star. those 4 really got my obsession kicking!

Ummm chobits I guess...

Really though it was reading the manga tsubasa (from the library of all places) that got me into watching and reading both anime and manga.

I watched Pokemon and Digimon when I was younger, but didn't know it was "anime." Thought it was just normal cartoons.

My first anime was InuYasha on adult swim. I watched the episode where Hakudoshi was riding on the back of Entei. As soon as that episode was over, I made it a routine to watch anime on adult swim every saturday night. I knew immediately that I had found something special. I knew I would be watching anime hardcore from then on. I ended up finding anime sites online and watching the entire InuYasha series in a few days. I also picked up several other anime on Adult Swim during those nights.

When you are fully aware of the distinction between anime and cartoons and seek out anime to obtain on your own rather than watch the shows on TV, then you have such a show.

For me, the first was The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya, which will always remain to be a fun SoL for me. That was right after it came out, in 2006. Shortly after I started watched a bunch of other shows, including Death Note, /hack Sign, Hellsing, Gundam Seed and stuff like that.

Of course, I've watched anime before that, but that was on TV and without me knowing it was anime. DBZ, pokemon and a bunch of shows on dutch telly should count as that.

Chances are a similar question has been asked before, but I'm interested in hearing when and in what way YOU were introduced to Anime ?

I have always loved japanese culture and japanese games like Final Fantasy and what not, but for some reason I didn't really hear much about Anime until 2-3 years ago (I'll be 23 this year), when a friend urged me to check out Death Note.
I literally had NO idea what I had been missing out on!

Like 3 or 4 years ago, Every time I walked into my sisters room their were always watching this anime called Card Captor Sakura then after awhile they were watching Spirited Away I was like "What is this?" Afterwards they told me and I got into anime that quick. Started watching Naruto, Bleach, Dragon Drive and much more. Now I'm into Japanese culture and anime.

Since I was like 4 or 5. Anime was pretty prominent back where I come from (as far as I remembered anyway, don't know how it is now), and we saw plenty of both anime and American cartoons that we didn't really care.

Let's see...lots of Dragon Ball, Gundam Wing, G Gundam, Yu Yu Hakusho, Evangelion, Rurouni Kenshin, Sakura Wars, Sailor Moon, Alps no Shoujo Heidi, Doraemon, Anime Sanjushi, Blue Blink, Lupin III, Slayers, list goes on and on and on and on.

I stopped watching for a while when my family moved to the US. Managed to revisit the shows I saw back then courtesy of Toonami, and put it off again. Naruto was really the one that resparked my interest back up; haven't lost interest since.

Japan was and still a country filled with a culture I'm pretty hooked on. Actually though, I'd eat up anything Asian-related. Samurai? Great! Bruce Lee? Jackie Chan? Sonny Chiba? Awesome.

Watching a lot of cartoons as I grew up probably had a lot of influence to me enjoying anime as much as I do now.

I can definitely say I started out as one of the generic long going shounen viewers.

I think my brother rented Spirted Away. Within a few days I watched Princess Mononoke, Castle in the Sky, and a few other Ghibli films in quick succession. Oddly enough that was about 8 years ago, and I only got really into anime last year. I had too many other interests in late elementary and high school for me to bother with it, I think.

I've been watching anime since I can remember, but I didn't know it was anime until I was in my latter years of high school.

Even as such though, I wouldn't say I was an actual anime "fan" until after I graduated. I went to a convention back in 08 across the country from me to see a band, picked up a couple anime figures because they were characters I had liked from shows... and then it all went downhill from there. =)

About 5 years ago a friend showed me Elfen Lied (He found it by searching for a song he loved and saw an AMV for it and watched it). It didn't really get me into anime but I liked it alot. Then I saw Death Note a couple years later thanks to a friend. Nuff said.

I've always been a passive fan because of Pokemon and Yu Yu Hakusho from my childhood and my exposure to Studio Ghibli over the years. But I've only had the time recently to become a full enthusiast, in this period between the end of college and the start of graduate school.

I watched anime off and on from the 80s and 90s with shows like robotech, voltron, sailormoon, speed racer, and technoman. I have always been a fan of animation. The first anime I bought was either Ghost in the SHell, Akira or Ninja Scroll.I actually got the movies by accident because I was in a SunCoast video store look for animation similar to Heavy Metal and came across those movies on VHS.Back then I mostly stuck to only movies. It wasn't until I was stationed in Korea where I started buying actual series and one of the channels there played Ah My Goddess, Eden's Bowey, Your Under arrest and Gensou Maden Saiyuuki.

I have my "childhood anime", which include Shaman King, Pokemon, Yu-Gi-Oh, Sonic X, and Ultimate Muscle. And despite them not being anime, special mentions go to Avatar TLA, Samurai Jack, and TMNT 2003.

A few years back I saw Death Note. Loved it, didn't think too much of it. Then about a year and a half ago I saw Gurren Lagann with some friends. It was like, amazing, so I watched Brotherhood. And Dragon Ball Z/Kai. And Evangelion. And before I knew it, I was marathoning through anime like there was no tomorrow.

When I was young, of course, when TV stations still show anime. Some of my childhood anime is Cardcaptor Sakura, Yugioh, Pokemon and Transformers Armada.
When I got older I always watched the anime block of local TV stations, shows that include Special A, D-Gray man, and Gundam 00.
When we got a faster internet connection, I discovered that I can watch anime on the internet, and my interest in anime got stronger.
Sady, nowadays TV stations don't show anime much so I have to rely on the internet for more finds.

When I was little, I watched DBZ, Sailor Moon, Shaman King and Rurouni Kenshin on TV, not even realising what anime is and I more or less loved all of them.

Years later, when I was in middle school, my classmate which I have never been very close with before, suddenly came up to me and started talking about this fan-made manga. I decided to check it out and quickly got obsessed. Not much later she told me those characters were actually from this thing called Naruto, which had me hooked from the very first episode. Then I watched Death Note and "officially" became a fan of anime.

That girl became one of my best friends and now we spend everyday blabbering about anime and annoying the crap out of everyone else xD

I think the first anime I ever saw was vampire hunter D on of all places TNT, this back way in the early 90’s, the first thing that struck me about it was how damn violent it was and this was the TV edit. Needless to say I was hooked, also at the time I was a huge fan of street fighter 2 now at the time the live action versions was out and as you would suspect I despised it.

I was at the mall one day hanging at the arcade *remember those?* and my friends were talking about the movie and one of them chimed in, “you know an animated movie for it just came out” to ware I respond ’what, like the cartoon on Saturdays?’ “No, no this is different. We went the local suncost and sure enough, there it was. Thankful I had some money from doing work around the neighborhood and promptly picked it up.

To this day still, the best video game based anime ever! After that I got into the usually stuff, sailormoon, DBZ, gundam wing, my collection really grew when I got a job and I am still going strong today.

First thing I saw was pokemon/dbz/kenshin, but at the time I had no idea it was "anime". I just looked at it as a cartoon.
About 6 years ago was the first time I watched an anime fully knowing what anime was at that point and that would have been: "Death Note".
A friend of mine had already started watching "Bleach" and "Naruto" so I dediced to try them out too, thus beginning my long journey into the world of anime.

Started with the dubbed cartoons on Kids WB, mostly Pokemon at the time, and then Yu-gi-oh. Didn't watch any for the next few years, apart from the occasional DBZ, then my friend introduced me to Death Note and Code Geass in freshman year in college. I've been hooked ever since.

I watched Pokemon/Yugioh when I was younger, but I don't think this counts; I wasn't into anime back then like I am now. My interest in anime really started when I loaned a manga seres from a friend (Full Moon, if you're curious); I read it all and liked it. I searched it online and found out that there was an anime series of it so I watched that, and I loved it. Then I realized that there was a bunch more anime series out there, so I started watching a lot of other series too.
