Not always, but I tend to give them higher scores for being good enough to actually make me cry. :U

To many anime's made me cry, But no. Even if I did cry I wouldn't give it a perfect 10, depends on how good the story is. ^^
At least for me anyways... :O

To cry? Or to get teary eyes?

Well, no, I don't instantly give an anime a 10 if it makes me teary, but of course that is a + in my book.

I've never actually "cried" by watching anime, but one time my tears wouldn't stop running ( Clannad ).

Personally, I wouldn't. I mean, AnoHana made me cry, but I wouldn't consider it a masterpiece at best.

Any thoughts on this?

I think I would give it a pretty high score, i mean if it made you cry then it must have been pretty emotional and well done in order for people to feel like that towards an anime.

Same here, I think it's done its job when you feel an attachment to a character to a level where you feel that amount of empathy, with it being a sad or happy moment.

No, but it will make me rate it higher for being able to do that. Most anime is melodramatic so it will take something real significant to make me tear up.

Of course not. I used to be able to handle anything without giving off an emotional response but sadly anime sometimes gets the better of me even if it's just being manipulative and throwing sad things in my face with bad writing. *cough, cough, Clannad, cough, Elfen Lied*.

Nope, but I usually tend to give them 8/10 or more. I think that if over all a series is poor enough for me to give it a low score then i don't become attached to the characters, thus i'm not really bothered if something happens, but if i get really into the characters and story then of course i get attached, then it takes very little to get me going.

No, crying is not the standard to hand out a 10-rating. It needs more than just emotional writing to be considered a masterpiece to me.

No, crying doesn't make a series compelling or captivating. Eliciting emotions from an anime doesn't necessarily equate to a better execution of the story line, the motivations of the characters and their development nor does it always illuminate the theme or moral implications of the story. Emotions like fan service can be made to cater to a specific segment of the anime watching population. I don't really see crying or any emotion as something substantive to use in rating a series. Clannad after story is a prime example, of fan catering based on emotions rather than fan service.

Ehh. No.
Example: Natsuyuki Rendezvous.
I cried a lot but the anime started to suck in the middle.

Crying usually results in a higher rating for me, as it means it was effective enough to make me feel genuine emotion, but it's never a guaranteed 10.

If it "just" makes me cry, then no, I don't. Rating animes would always be easy then and it isn't. The whole thing has to be rewarding and gain popularity for it's progress of story and development than just emotions. Emotions could be a main factor of the series but if it's just there for the sake of it then it's useless. I could say about Clannad After Story's build up then the misplaced disappointing ending but the way the emotions were pulled off were actually satisfying.

1 score higher is a logical solution for a tear in my opinion. Giving an anime a 10 is going a bit overboard, but that's just me.

I generally love if an anime can make me feel any sort of strong emotion. If I cry that means I cared a lot about what was happening. I wouldn't give an anime a 10 just for doing that but it certainly would add a couple points.

Sorry but, I have a longstanding depression problem, and am synthetically happy most of the time. Some of this stuff really makes me howl, but it won't get a ten, unless I'm dancing around waiting for the next episode if it's current, or I melt into the sofa if it's a series, if ya get what I mean.

For example, Mawaru Penguindrum got a ten, because it was essential viewing for me. Boku wa Tomodachi ga Sukunai: Add-on Disc got a ten because it had my wife and I howling with laughter.

But Tari Tari only gets a nine (and thats a questionable one), because I loved the song Melody of the Heart, and the choral version made tears stream down my face. Not because it made me sad of anything like that, but because it was a nice little ditty, that said remember your friends with fondness, especially when you're at your limit.

Kokoro Connect didn't upset me in anyway whatsoever, but I had to see it each week, because well, what can you say...why do we need to wait for blu-rays to see the end...moan moan moan. Same for Gosick, or Madoka, which built up to a fantastic conclusion.

Not really because I'm a sensitive and weak person, so crying isn't out of the norm for me. I'll give it some bonus points for having the ability to make me cry but giving it a 10 is kind of over the top. I've never given a show a 10 anyway unless I'm joking.

Normally I will. If it makes me cry then it is pretty clear that I became emotionally attached to the characters. I honestly like it when I can empathize with characters so that, to me, indicates good story telling. It takes more to be a 10, but making me cry makes a 7 the starting grade. On the other hand, an anime can be a 10 without making me cry.

peace

No. Generally, if a show makes me sad enough to cry (and doesn't make it better afterward), I'm going to drop the show and do my best to forget about it. I'm doing my best to keep myself happy as it is. I don't need sad shit happening in my entertainment unless I don't care about the characters. If it's more of a not sad crying, then still no.

Only good animes (my opinion) have made me cry for differnt reasons. Happiness or sadness doesnt matter. If the serie/movie was that good that it made me cry I would almost give a 10 for sure.

If it does, then the ranking goes up significantly, but it also has to be complete in order for me to give it that 10.

I don't hand 10s out like candy these days :s

Interesting topic.

So it happen's that one of the only 2 10's I have ever given to anime is one that made me cry. But It was the entire package that made me give Clannad 10.

The second 10 I gave to a movie just because it was something that I really enjoyed. It may not be ranked a masterpiece for most but I liked Spirited away a lot.

If i lose it during an anime, theres a good chance it will get a very high score. if i cry it means something has really affected me - burrowed into my psyche.

Getting a 10 is different. It has to be fantastic in all ways, not just b/c it moved me in places.

If it make me cry ,but the rest of the story is horrible. Clearly I can't give it a 10. Some anime can be very bad at the beginning up to middle of the story, but at the end can make it touched to the audience. So I would consider to rate between 7-9

For an anime has to be really good to make you get emotional enough to cry, but It doesn't make it a 10. Good score though.... Unless you're crying out of frustation... In that case Its a low score.

I cry at everything so my tearing up over an anime isn't exactly special. If the story, the characters are good, though, why not?

Rarely, `cause i don`t like anime that makes me sad and cry, i prefer to smile at the end or to give me the sentiment of satisfaction of seeing it.

No because I'm a crybaby, if the death is good or there is enough emotion I might cry. And while that might influence my scoring, that should not be the only goal of the anime, if it makes me cry it doesn't automatically get a 9 or a 10. There are probably anime that have made me cry in my 7s or 8s.
