Actually, I think he meant that the fact he was in a relationship didn't affect his fondness of romance animes, he just worded it exceedingly poorly. Still, on the last thing you said, are you saying that wanting a relationship because of what you've seen in an anime is the sign of emotional madness? Or did you mean something else? i should have made it clearer, i meant that whilst watching romance can make me want a little bit of romance in my life, but because i am emotionally stable i can watch romance anime without having some kind of 'love/hate' relationship, which doesn't sound very stable to me. |

I want to understand the psychology of it all so being honest is key. killing time and forever alone, what else |

While I do feel that romance anime idealizes relationships at times (which can make it unrealistic), I still think they're just as engrossing as a mystery, horror, adventure, etc. themed anime. At first I felt kind of weird for watching them, but not anymore. Psst...by the way...people don't have to know that you watch them! Do it all in secret, hahaha! |

If you are being serious then you are a social retard but ok lol. Consider people may appear to you on the defensive side all the time because you're always attacking. It's a perfectly reasonable question to ask, although it was worded in an way easy to misinterpret, I came to the conclusion that he was "attacking" your point/post as well. That aside, I understand why you would come to the conclusion that someone hated romance media because they were single (or maybe even in a relationship) would be a bit weird in the head, but that wouldn't be true of all people. For example, if someone was single they could find that they cannot sympathize with the characters in romance at all, and find their actions illogical. This would probably lead them to hate the media, since it'd be boring and frustrating. Another example: Say there was someone in a relationship, and he/she watched romance animes, and became acutely aware that their relationship was nothing like what was portrayed, and that their relationship just lacked any... romance (there, I said it), thus they might dislike watching romance animes because it painfully reminds them of the fact that their relationship doesn't have much love, or match up to expectations. I wouldn't call either one of the theoretical people in the above examples emotionally unstable, so I feel making the sweeping statement that you made generalized people too much. I mean, I'm not saying that noone who gets drastically affected by romance animes is emotional unstable, but it's just not everyone would be. |

I don't really have a problem with it. I enjoy lots of romances, even though it's not my preferred genre. A lot of the time, they're portrayed pretty unrealistically, so there's nothing to compare and be unsatisfied with. As for the ones that are, I don't hate them and have petty, mixed emotions about it. I'm not looking for a relationship, so why would I be jealous of a 2D character having one? |

My cynic and pessimistic view: Romance anything is an ugly remainder of reality of how rare it is to find someone you legitimately likes and want to spend a long time with them. If it tries to be bittersweet, it will relate to how easily love is broken. If it tries to be sweet, it will relate to how bloody rare it is for chance events to start the whole thing in the first place. If it tries to be bitter, it's just a big mess of tears at the end of the day. Overall, I avoid romance like the plague unless there are other genres within the show that's more important. At the end of the day, no matter what the outcome is, it will often lead me to a pool of tears. Now I'm not saying crying is bad or anything, but it just sounds depressing if one were to actively engage in this genre when the end result is always the same. I am hedonistic by nature, not masochistic. :\ |

I watch, but I don't watch shows where romance is the main plot device (like True Tears, for example). It's nice to see two protagonists in some story that slowly fall for each other. (Tales of the Abyss :3) I'm single, too. |

Yeah its a love hate kinda. I love to see it because I love love and romance. I like cuteness and intimacy and all that but it sometimes reminds me of how im alone. I usually enjoy it more if a character is in a similar situation as me and it works out for them and then i feel happy like it might work for me too. |

I know people who have gone out to restaurants that haven't really "loved" each other properly, so I don't think much of it. I think what people get envious of is the display of these people having wonderful and powerful feelings of love for each other, which makes them incredibly happy if it turns out well. Any of us could take a girl out to a restaurant theoretically, but actually feeling the emotions that those in love in romances do isn't something you an decide to do, it just happens, and for many it just hasn't. That's why they'd feel envious. Heck, I want to be happy as much as the next person, I kind of wish I could feel about someone so strongly. I doubt I ever will, but I'd never get depressed over the issue (well, perhaps when I get into my mid 30s and am still alone). |

Yeah, I'm single and I love romance anime... Along with psychological, horror and action series. I don't think my love of romance has anything to do with the fact that I'm single. Maybe it's because I like the idealised version of romance. I know that it's not like that in reality, at all :P |

Been in a long term relationship for like 10 years or so. Romance anime sometimes annoys me more than anything as I always hoped that I would find my romance in a similar way or at least something a bit more dramatic. The way mine happened seemed remarkably dull and uninteresting in comparison to alot of the stuff I've seen in anime. |

Why would this even be a factor in watching something that you enjoy? It's like saying I can't watch a sports anime because I don't play that particular sport. I'm single and I love romance content, be it anime, manga, fanfics, books, etc. I would think that most single people have the maturity not to get offended just because some fictional characters have a relationship and the watcher doesn't. |

tbh I don't really care what genre I'm watching as long as it is good:P Then why should I feel offended over watching something? What part of "love/hate" difficult to understand? All of these also applies for people who aren't affected it at all. I can expand on it more if you need, it seems there are a variety of factors that come into play. The simplest factor of them all would be that humans can understand and enjoy the concept of romance without having to be currently in a relationship themselves. Fictional romance stories and real romances are independent of one another despite one being able to positively or negatively influence the other. A person in a relationship is no more likely to be bothered by content in a romance story than a person who isn't currently in a relationship. You may mean you want to understand what a single person enjoys or dislikes about romance stories and you believe that single person's answers would be different from a person in a relationship. That could be interesting but you worded in a way that makes it sound as if single people shouldn't watch or enjoy romantic stories just because they are single. That is absurd and that is why you are getting responses like "I DON'T PILOT A GIANT ROBOT THEREFORE I CANNOT WATCH MECHA ANIME" So if you really want answers try not to sound as if you looking for examples to support a conclusion you reached before asking the question. |
