Japan's national broadcasting organization NHK featured the popularity of manga One Piece in its news program "Today's Close-up". According to the report, 88% of the readers are adults and 13% are older than fifty years old.

Chart: Demographics of One Piece Readers

The program concluded that the relationship of mutual trust among the characters attracts the grown-ups, who have been exhausted with the economic recession.

Not suprising given it's sales in Japan. That's part f the appeal of OP I think, that you can enjoy it with your whole family.

definitely yes, the nonstop rambling about friendship and comrades proves it, with characters overpowering anyone by spouting "because he/she is my friend"
the fact that more adults like doesn't mean it's not child stuff
we have kids who love more seinen and gore ^^

some are already on their deathbed and it will grieve them to death because they won't be able to finish the series ^^

I'm not surprised by this. After all, it's only the adults who can afford to buy all the One Piece merchandise when they release. You know how much the damn things cost?

actualy i think alot of it is for a different reason alot of the readers now probably started when it was new, and to younger people they watch it when their young and then they grow out of it becuase they only saw it in the middle and never realy cared much for it while its dedicated crowd are people old enough to remember its start.... or something like that :D

Not surprising if one takes into consideration that OP has been around for about 13 years. After all, manga readers grow older too.
Most probably the same can be said about Naruto and Bleach readers.

So, since One Piece started over 10 years ago, most of these adults would have been children when it started. someone who started reading it when they were 13 would be about 26-27 now.

That doesn't explain why more elderly people read it than children, though.

100% of critics ought to read what they are criticizing before they complain about it.

Just saying. I haven't watched or read One Piece myself, so I'm neutral about it, but i might start if I feel like reading an action shounen series at some point for a change of pace.

You have K-ON on your list.

I guess I fall under the 1-18 demographic (that is if I lived in Japan)...at least until July. Fairly surprising statistics, but the manga's been out for nearly 14 years...its pretty understandable.

one piece are ongoing series from when present adults were teenagers. that's one of the reason i suppose.

I imagine most of its audience grew up/older with it and fewer kids would choose to start up on something so long and seemingly neverending.... well, at least that's my sentiment. I want to watch & read it but the length intimidates me >_>

Of course most of it's readers/viewers are adult. The show itself has many adult themes/arcs/ideas/story etc. I wouldn't let my children read/watch it until they were old enough to appreciate the psychology behind the series. It's too good for children anyways imo.

Okay let's say you start One Piece at age 12 in 1997, it is now 2011,you are 25-26 years old, okay the news doesn't shock me that much that way.

A lot of over 50 year olds though, that is surprising.

Eeeehh... If I begin to read a manga when I'm 8 years old, and the manga last for 14 years, that means that in that moment I'll have 22 years old. So maybe it's not just that adults are attracted to the series, it's just that they have grown with it, and just keep following it.

holy shit you are so dumb.

It's a shonen manga directed towards a shonen demographic which are young BOYS. Themes aren't deep or complex and the world of One Piece is moreso black-white GOVERNMENT IS EVIL kind of stuff and most if not all characters are 2 dimensional.
