@Scordolo about your comment in the ep 4 episode, i think you have misunderstood thors and Askellad characterization, i suggest this video if you have time, this guy made a in depth analysis about the themes of the episode and about the characters of Thors and Askellad. You can jump right to the review part, you don't need to see the reaction.

I'm sorry in advance if you found me too nosy, but i believe ep 4 is one of the most crucial episodes of s1 and there are things that will be built up upon it, so i think one shouldn't misinterpret what the episode is about.

Thx.Will watch it later. You have now made me convinced lol.

um, can someone explain why Thorfinn is working together with Askeladd and the mercenaries? i know he wants to get battle experience and not to lose sight of Askeladd, but doing work for the one who killed your father? don't get it

perhaps, he's trying to gain their trust and then backstab them? i doubt it's a stockholm syndrome thing

Askelad said that he will accept the duel if Thorfinn proves himself worthy in a battle
I thought AOT was overrated , but S4 changed my mind. It's epic.

Highly recommend it

Thorfinn: "I'll take revenge on the murderer of my father!"
Also Thorfinn: Helps the murderer of his father fighting and killing innocent people

Great protagonist, very smart, wow!

Well, there's the little history lesson needed to understand this conflict. The Great British Empire have yet to be formed, it's just a bunch of feudal lords with the king on top right now.

As unbelievable as it is, there is a 6 years time skip and Thorfinn has now become a hardened veteran capable of slaughtering and butchering multiple targets simultaneously ll by himself. He has never really gotten any formal training, but having lived 6 years in constant battle, of course, that experience alone is enough to teach a kid how to survive and kill. Enough for Thorfinn to forget that he has people waiting for him back home, his mother and sister, his family.

Having Thorfinn be nurtured back to health and cared for by a pair of a mother and a daughter from a small English village really brought back the humanity within Thorfinn. Their kind gestures remind him of his family of which he has abandoned in order to satisfy his need to avenge his father. It has been 6 years, how long will it be for him to finally be able to return to being a son and a normal villager in Iceland before he's fully consumed by war and slaughter? The old woman who cried at the sight of Thorfinn killing the 3 Englishmen is the perfect portrayal of how far gone Thorfinn had become from just being an ordinary kid. At this point, he's the most ruthless member of the village in Iceland.

damn, that sucks. old lady saved him and called him by her dead son's name when he ran away, so i'd assume that thorfinn's killings must have felt like her own son was ruining the village. though i wish the timeskips weren't as fast, his expertise is awesome to see.

Man... that was really freaking sad. Thorfinn struggled and then he turned into something he hated all this time. I felt bad for him and the woman that looked after Thorfinn. It was just very emotional.

He's completely changed and there's nothing he can do about it.

That was such a beautiful but heart-breaking episode. That scene with tears coming from the grandma's eyes was beautiful even if it broke my heart. I believe its possible she was trying to replace John.

Man... what a tearjerker that was. Not only the scene where we see Thorifinn learn to survive the battlefield, but especially the arrival of the Vikings. The lady saw the innocence in the mysterious boy that turned up in the village. She saw the best in him, her son, naivety. While her daughter considered the worst, she was more concerned with nurturing him. I'm crying just thinking about the beauty of this episode.

And then she was in disbelief when Thorifinn warned her and her daughter of the invasion. Even when he was standing on the bodies of several deceased soldiers, ready to strike the neck of the patrolman, she saw through his traumas and into the purest beauty of his soul. The storm of tears on her face as Thorfinn finally slaughtered him really got me. There was less naivety in the boy than she hoped to belief. It was in her that the naivety lie - in her final moments she chose to see the best in humanity and not hold the unpredictable cruelty from the world against traumatized children.

And then the Vikings arrived. butchering the village. It's here that Thorifinn is reminded of the desperation and savagery that stole his father's life. By way of unfortunate circumstances, the correlation between honor and catastrophe is once again reinforced in his young mind.

Dang...What a crazy episode! I do have a few questions though.
Did the old lady...die? Or did she manage to escape in time?
What does the broken comb mean? How did you guys interpret it?

Ya know Kimetsu may have better animation and godlike visuals, but Vinland has a much better story. I love em both in different ways.

Honestly, I think that the animation for Vinland is more impressive than Kimetsu. With the smooth feel and beautiful landscapes, along with the amazing choreography, Vinland is in my opinion, way more beautiful than Kimetsu

This episode had a bunch of weak animation cuts (especially during battles where CG models that look like sticks were fighting each other and stood out horribly from the backgrounds), visual inconsistencies with the lack of blood on the daggers that Thorfinn used to kill 2 Englishmen, and a iffy transition from Thorfinn fighting at night to just being passed out when the mother and daughter finds him. But regardless of that, the ending and the other elements to this episode were good enough to have the episode still be an alright showcase overall. Especially with the ending and the chaos that ensued with the raiding of the village by the Vikings in a heartless fashion, he's definitely not a hero by any means but feels like a proper character - even if he can be frustrating or annoying to watch from time to time, or even all the time for a couple of my friends.

What gets me the most is that  Thorfinn  was really trying to help them at the end. He told them to run over and over, but by the time they realized what was going on, there was nothing they could do.

Then to see the sadness in that old ladies heart, and having him just take the hugest breath to push it all down.

Damn, he really caught his first body at the age of 6/7. At that point, he stopped being a boy and truly became a Viking. He even saved Askeladd's life he really said If u will die it shall be by my hand. I love how they are accurately representing all types of Christians.
I felt sorry for that mother and Thorfinn because he actually cared for them both. It is saddening how he breathed in and out to kill his heart. His emotional state really does represent how a lot of us dudes feel

I love the Middle Ages! It's my favorite in world history, second to World War 2.

Interesting. The story is set years before the formation of the North Sea Empire. It really sucks that the Norsemen declined when their empire fragmented by the 1040s. I wish they ruled those regions forever.

Thorfinn is shaping up into an excellent warrior. I like his moves.

As much as I like to pillage and r*pe with the Vikings, I kind of feel bad seeing them attacking a peaceful village. If I were a great Viking, I'd make it a rule to attack only wealthy nobles. I won't feel as bad killing or r*ping those entitled f*ckers. Haha!

So basically author of this garbage read Berserk and just decided to make more focus on complicated relations between MC and a gang leader which became his unofficial stepfather. Pretty pathetic that this crap has such a high rating when it's so generic and boring in terms of one-sided characters, poor dialogs, and Naruto tier combat. Even Guts which is from a dark fantasy world trained for three years before in 9 yo to start helping the mercenaries with a basic sword, he had troubles to even hold it at six yo but look at Thorifinn - wielding a sword at six yo and already fighting along the mercenaries like it's nothing, your typical modern "realistic and historic" anime, yeah.
