Why do people tend to think all 70s and 80s anime was mostly just mecha?

I ask because I mostly watch anime from those two decades and I've seen very little mecha.

Never seen anyone saying that.

If anything, they usually say Sci-Fi heavy or something similar.

There's a lot of mecha but also a lot that aren't. I rarely watch them though I've liked the few I've seen quite a bit.

I'm not too familiar with those decades, but the one thing I noticed is there's quite a handful of WMT works from that time span.

It's the most notable trend of the time though. What else do you expect from folks that don't have any real experience? They're sorta like folks that think from the outside that think anime means either kids show or porn.

Cel animation just isn't my thing but I do appreciate the mechanical design from that era. They've moved to 3D models now and I'm not a fan so 70's-90's is where I can see hand drawn mechs.

because that is what most popular genre/thames from that era. just like how some oldie fans look most of anime these days are harem/moe/ecchi.

Wait, magical girls, that means that moe existed in the 80's? wasn't it something created by post 2000's anime to ruin it in general?
Because that it's what this forum have teached me.

Especislly with all the clichéd skirts-blowing-up-from-the-wind scenes and PG-13 transformations into magical girl outfits that that era is especially known for. Not like it's any different now though. ;s

Moe wasn't really a thing back then. Or maybe it was, but no one realised it.
One thing this forum should teach you (and something you should've realised) is that people like moe, despite whatever they may say against it. ;D

I don't know anyone who thinks that to be honest. I watched tons of anime from 70s and 80s but only few of them are mecha. Most noticable were probably votoms. I don't really like mecha genre that much.
If there is one genre where old anime excel it's definitely adventure/historical series. Also WMT series are amazing.

how do you only watch anime from 70s and 80s....

those are the most dated, 90s anime are oddly decent enough, but the second you step into the 80s, production quality and plot pacing take a huge hit IMO.

I've never actually heard people say that, but fact remains that there was a large influx of mecha series made by Sunrise at the time (late 70's early 80's). Votoms was one of my favorites. :3 There was also the rise of Robotech in the US etc...

Not true at all since 80s were the best years for anime and the most influential and notable series were born in that decade. There are so many good anime from 80s, really. While they might be inferior in terms of animation (not art though), they are way superior to modern anime in terms of stories and characters. Also the art and animation in 80s was very good, much better than 90s to be honest (personal preference). 80s still remains my favourite decade of anime.

Animation quality in 70s wasn't that good compared to 80s but there are still many amazing series from that time (Rose of Versaille, Mirai Shounen Conan, Akage no Anne, Ashita no Joe, Yamato, Ace o Nerae!, Takarajima, Ie Naki Ko, Chirin no Suzu). Damn so many great anime from 70s and 80s that I just don't understand how people can say that old anime are bad.

I said I mostly watch anime from the 70s and 80s not only watch from the 70s and 80s. The animation doesn't bother me much since I prefer the art anyway.

It makes a certain amount of sense given the decent number of mecha franchises and stand alone movies/OVAs that got their start during that time and flourished. I'd say it's more known for good science fiction in general though.

There's lots of great 70s & 80s Anime that's not Mecha.

I just wish more fansubbers would focus on more non-mecha Anime from the 70s.

When it comes to Go Nagai related stuff, I've always wanted to see "Majokko Tickle" subbed, and of course, the highly influential music Anime, "Sasurai no Taiyou."

I don't mean to disagree with this in general (not that I care about which decade is better or worse, though), but how do you measure influence if not by taking into account a large period of time? Is the influence of late 00s and 10s series something measurable at this point and age?

early 00s maybe

The influence of GitS:SAC is palpable today. It has been over 10 years since that came out.

Though, if we're talking clear influences, shouldn't those become less obvious the longer it's been since its release?
