I am very grateful for canonical flashbacks coming through like this, but I do understand that this is coming from someone who can watch them all in a somewhat high frequency and some people waited a week for possibly numerous episodes which have like 5% new content at most. I had stated I wanted to find a time to catch up on their pasts and now seems like the best time. :D
The recap of Luffy shooting the flag reminded me of how much I love that scene and I wanted to say it again. It's so meaningful for Luffy to do that because of Robin's situation. Robin is waiting to become a burden and be betrayed by those she loves like she always has, and Luffy declares war on the entire world to ensure her that they'd fight the literal entire world before betraying their nakama like that. It's really moving and powerful and I love how they did it with no hesitation. It was a good scene to transition to the Shanks backstory with too since it's very related.
The flashback itself was a great reminder to just how formative Shanks was to Luffy. I truly love how you can see both Luffy's childhood personality lingering with him to this day as well as his influence from Shanks.
And Shanks himself has always been such an incredible character! I've never forgotten his speech that was repeated once again here, starting from him telling the mountain bandits that a gun isn't for threatening people before his comrade domed the bandit in the head, and what followed about how "one can make fun of him, spill food on him, even spit on him BUT.. [insert angry serious face even Luffy got from him] ANYONE WHO HURTS MY FRIENDS, NO MATTER THE REASON HAS TO PAY". He's such a calm, friendly person, he even offered the bandits the last of his alcohol. Later he intentionally made Luffy mad so he would stubbornly feel the need to follow through with his dream to be a pirate before entrusting him with his own straw hat to keep him going, something that reminded me of when Luffy made Coby so mad that he would hit him and not squander his dreams of being part of the navy. And when things get serious like when the mountain bandits take Luffy, he is mad, serious, and willing to stare down a sea king.
Another massive thing Luffy took from Shanks outside of the carefree attitude and his ability to choose his battles very wisely, is Shank's ability to give it his all for those he cares about. He loses his arm and the first thing he does is say how glad he is for Luffy to be safe as if he isn't missing an arm! He knew that he wanted to protect his friend and he did everything it would take to do so with no regret in the slightest on his face. It's incredible and comparable to Luffy, here and now, trying to save his friend this time by not losing an arm but doing something comparably worse, declaring war on the entire world. I think the flashback was great to get us thinking like this. Luffy has become a man that I think Shanks will be proud of. What Shanks is to Luffy, Luffy is to me hahaha.
The quality of the video getting worse was agreeably immersion breaking but I also found it kind of beautiful in a weird way. It was a reminder of just how far we've come, both literally in the shows universe, but also externally. The art, animation, and dimensions are completely different now as it's gone on for a long time at this point. It's easy to forget how far we've come and I like that I was reminded of that.
P.S. If Shanks ever dies it will be the saddest mentor death ever.
P.S.S. I liked the foreshadowing of child Luffy calling his punches pistols and the foreshadowing of Usopp's dad referring to his kid being around Luffy's age. :D |
