What a season of Apocathery Diaries!

This show became one of my favourite animes of all time!

Loved every moment of it. Definitely anime of the year for me!

Loulan new look as Tamomo was perfect! I wish in future we can see what this capable fox can do!
I need somebody who can love me at my worst
No, I'm not perfect, but I hope you see my worth
'Cause it's only you, nobody new, I put you first
And for you, girl, I swear I'll do the worst

If you stay forever, let me hold your hand
I can fill those places in your heart no else can
Let me show you love, oh, I don't pretend, yeah
I'll be right here, baby, you know I'll sink or swim

Unpopular opinion, I'm sure, but it's become painfully clear to me that the author/screenplay writers do not know how to write good romance or even romance that isn't harassment. As in the frog episode, the "romance dynamic" continues to be "Jinshi tries to force himself on Maomao while she looks confused and/or terrified." As a "bonus" this week, we even got her verbalizing her fear with "This...this is bad!"

It's bad enough for a character to appear oblivious/indifferent to another's advances, but more often than not, the visual cues and dialogue were more in line with "I don't want this/I'm scared of what he's doing," which takes the lack of consent to a new level.

I guess a lot of people are into it, but I really can't understand why.

Yeah, I was pretty uncomfortable when watching the moments between them in this season. I enjoyed the ones like Maomao letting Jinshi sleep on her lap because it doesn’t look like she’s against it. But she doesn’t appear to be into him whenever he makes his advances. I can tell she likes him as a person but that doesn’t mean she’s interested in this kind of intimacy…? Even in the final scene, when she touched his face, it felt to me like it was more about her appreciating Luomen’s work on the stitches. I started out liking the ship, by the way, and I still more or less do, but I’m put off by the way it was portrayed especially in the last episode.

So much not buying that last reveal as anything but ridiculously unrealistic. I mean, speaking as vaguely as possible, sure the last one was shown how it was stopped, but what about the several before where we clearly saw they hit?

But whatever, still a great show.

"Why am I always interrupted?" Gee it's too bad Jinshi doesn't have an attendant/bodyguard with him at all times who he could place outside the door and order them not to let anyone interrupt 9_9 This whole game of her pretending to be dumb and being disinterested is growing tedious, I really don't think I can take another season of this. She wrote a freaking sex manual for the court ladies how long is she going to ignore her own biology, heck given the character we are lead to believe she is you'd think she would have sex with Jinshi just out of pure curiosity. But whatever His being such an unassertive wuss makes me care even less about him, rather see her hook up with her nerd 1/2 brother so she can experiment on their inbred baby.
Combine the perpetually stalled romance with the constant spoilers people post for this show "I bet Loulan is still alive and the hairpin stopped the bullet and she sells it, oh look aren't I a genius for guessing the plot and posting it a week early? I swear I never read the source material"<_< -_- and I have really soured on this show. Season 1 was great but I grow less and less interested the longer it goes on. It's pretty much in "milk the cow" mode now. I originally enjoyed manga and anime because they actually ended their stories but now they have become too influenced by DC and Marvel where the story just drags on and on once the author realizes how popular their character has become. This season pretty much wrapped up everything introduced in season1 so not really interested in season 3. This is a good enough ending for me these 2 get on living their separate lives not really able to be together and he just pops in once every so often for a quickie. Don't need some new court drama to be introduced to bring her back to the palace. 7/10 for the season.

This second season has maintained the typical traits of the previous one, that is, a little slow in the narrative rhythms, and in the vortex of situations that happen it is not clear where the events want to go, like everything that happened in this last episode. Almost telegraphed, almost, the resurrection of the character of Zicui, but I do not despise the choice. Too bad that we have not seen the character of Xiaolan, who knows, maybe he will return in the next season. However, it was a fairly enjoyable anime and not predictable in the story, even if, as said before, it was a little cryptic in the narration.

How the fuck Loulan is alive?

She tucked her hair stick into her robes when Maomao gave it to her, and she took one shot to the chest not long after. You can see a bullet mark on the hair stick when she trades it to the merchant.

@SciTails Even though I do agree that it's very hard to watch sometimes. It is actually a lot more realistic than the majority of romance in anime. I actually went trough this exact situation myself when I was younger (without the being a crown prince part lol). If you're used to getting girls without any issues and you can't actually get the one you really like you start doing this awkward stuff .

You could argue that it's unlikable/hard to watch (and i agree) but its not bad writing. The reason why people think it's bad is because in almost every show ''romance'' is glorified/full of sprinkles.

Ps: its not fear

edit: i'd say the ''bad part'' comes from repeating it too often tho.

The ending was fulfilling, but not even a kiss??? And Loulan surviving pretty much means she either had someway to stop the bullets or someone saved her. Absurd cliffhanger!

Maomao almost accepting Jinshi's advances was finally some good progress in the relationship.

Welp ig I have quite a bit to talk about, just to clear up my thoughts. Ignoring the stupid cockblocking, Jinshi sleeping on Maomao's lap, with Maomao casually acknowledging and continuing her work, encapsulates their relationship in such a strangely romantic way. Very beautiful.

Though the highlight of this episode is actually Maomao, Xiaolan, and Shisui. We've come full circle from when Xiaolan was learning to read and write (ep1 this season I believe?) to her now writing the letters to her friends. We've also come full circle from how Maomao said she'd learnt to suppress her emotions and not to cry when she was neglected in the pleasure district, to now her coming back to said place, lonelier than before, and couldn't help shedding tears for her friends (chef kiss for not showing her face). Pretty bittersweet how Maomao probably realizes they will likely never get to see each other ever again, and that shit hits hard. At some point, on some day, it might come a time where I'd never see a close friend again.

It's sad but honestly beautiful. We also get to see Shisui at the end surviving, which is to be expected. Though it was quite a heartache. Jinshi mentioned that he never saw Loulan again last episode, and the fact that Shisui expressed wanting to go to "the other side of the ocean" (or whatever the quote actually is) implies that she is finally free from her old life, not looking back and most likely never returning. (Her trading the hair pin, albeit funny, suggests that she is leaving the item behind for Maomao. Essentially, everything points to her never returning.)

Sure the mystery was top-notch. But the last episode made me realize the characters carry a lot to make this show work as well as it did (which honestly should've been obvious, though for some reason I didn't really think so highly of before). Generally, the characters may seem innocuous and are quite subdued (specifically in favor of the mystery), but it's pretty fascinating how they are written with sufficient integrity that, when needed, will shine. I didn't expect to end up being as endeared with Maomao's progression as I did. I think she was fine in the first season, but the second season really made her character, especially with these last few episodes. This show certainly isn't perfect, far from it. But as usual with these things, I just don't really care. There are so many things that it just does far too well for me to not love.

I would really like they give up the romance side, it’s really ridiculous and bring nothing to the show. If anything it make it look like it’s for female teenagers/YA (it feels like characters have middle school behavior when they talk about romance), while I think some parts are more mature.

Anyway I really preferred the first season with small story as I think this whole shi family arc is not well handled, but I did like the start of season 2.

Loulan's survival kinda ruined the impact of that amazing dance-off she gave before falling to what should have been her death. They better bring her back and get some use out of her, otherwise it's kinda pointless.

That said, it's a pretty minor blip against a rather amazing season as we got to see the convergence of many of those plotlines from S1 and the first half of S2. Not much of a rebellion tbh since they barely put up much of a resistance. I hope the next threats they face make up for it.

Oh man, I’m so fucking sad this is over now 😭😭😭 this season was fantastic! I’m so happy I was able to binge watch all of it.

I wish Maomao would finally fall in love with Jinshi. I was really hoping his scar would go away. I’m so really sad about the fact that Maomao is out of the rest palace and that Shishu traded the hair stick :(

This isn't an action show by any stretch. It's mostly just conversations and mysteries and sometimes the gravity of politics. But I am always enthralled by the characters and writing every episode. This is an absolute classic. This is a cream of the crop series 10/10.

haha I did call out that the children would revive! But I didn't see Loulan to survive. Did she tamper with all feifas and predicted the soldiers would tanke them and use them, is she that much of a mastermind? I guess that explains how she danced so good while commiting the equivalent of suicide by cop

This was nice, still weaker than Season 1 in my eyes. Nice conclusion to the story.

Surely the children would survive, they cant make something cruel like this happen, so it was obvious.

Shisui is alive which is kinda nice but then again if every character survives whatever they are going through it kinda takes away the tension. Cause you know they somehow will survive anyways.

Jinshi coming after Maomao like this in the weirdest of situations, like being next to dead children, is kind of weird. I didnt enjoy these scenes at all. Maomao has clearly no interest thats why it is just unromantic and unsightly in my eyes.

I really don't understand what purpose Shisui/Loulan still being alive serves the story. She has fulfilled her narrative purpose now and her "death" was a satisfying and heartfelt conclusion to her arc. But now she's alive, we're instead left with all manner of questions around how in the fuck she managed to survive, even taking into account the theory mentioned elsewhere that the hair stick stopped one of the bullets: even if you accept that, she was shot several times before the "final" blow and then fell off the tower afterwards. So, to survive, she would have somehow had to avoid bleeding to death from the multiple gun shot wounds, avoid those wounds getting infected, avoid severe injury from falling off the tower, then be in a state to escape the vicinity undetected by the Royal Army without freezing to death, bleeding out or succumbing to injuries obtained from the fall.

It's such a counter-intuitive decision to keep her alive, completely undercutting the end of her arc and completely stretching logic and plausibility to do it as well.

That aside, I'm really sick of Jinshi and Maomao getting interrupted every time they're about to make any meaningful progress with their relationship: it always pisses me off when an anime romance baits the audience with hints of progress only to back out of it at the last second, not least because it's a trick usually employed by bad romcoms that know they have nothing to say once they get together. And that shouldn't be what this show is, I know it's better than that so it leaning on such a hackneyed trope is annoying.

@Mattinator95 If by "moon prince stuff" you mean his paperwork and similar duties, then he’s always been doing that. Also, what do you mean by "if she passed the exam"? Was there an exam to become a concubine's lady in waiting? And if so, did Maomao even apply for such an exam? I can't recall at all.

As far as I remember, Zuigetsu basically just brought her in, tossed her at Gyokuyou, and Maomao started adapting from there, no exam involved. So I’m genuinely confused by what you’re saying. And lastly, sorry, but what exactly do you mean by "also applies to Gyokuyou"? I don’t get that part either.

The court lady exam she bombed in S1. Basically to have an official position like a office woman or secretary.
She had to work as Jinshi's servant/maid after that and was only on loan to Gyokuyou.

Perfect ending. Glad the kids are alive with the resurrection medicine, Xialoan is doing well, and...even Shisui is alive! Hope it's nothing as BS as her surviving the gunshot solely because of the hair pin....but either way, I'm happy to see her alive and well again. She was easily one of the standout characters in this entire season, so I would've missed her terribly.
The Maomao and Jinshi moments are somewhat cute, although I still have mixed feelings about it overall. I like their chemistry, but Jinshi is quite icky for constantly attempting to kiss Maomao while knowing that she has no power to refuse his advances.

Overall, another solid season of Apothecary Diaries, although I liked the first season slightly more. Season one contained pretty much all of my favorite episodes - mainly the ones involving Lakan (a bit disappointing that Lakan didn't appear nearly as much as I'd expected in this last big arc) and with Maomao + Jinshi moments. Some parts of this season felt a bit overdramatized, and I felt like the Maomao + Jinshi moments in the first season involved a lot more of their funny bantering than on the romantic aspect.

Kinda sad that this would be the last time we see Shisui and also very sad Xiaolan didn't even get to say goodbye to Shisui and Maomao in person. But I guess that's for the best and she wouldn't ever know her bestfriends were important figures in the court.

Maomao finally knows Jinshi is the prince lol. But I do have a question to those who know, Jinshi bought Maomao from the Vergdigris house right? why is she not back with Jinshi's house as a personal servant?

Anyways, I hope the anime continues and the quality doesn't drop.

Intimate moments between maomao and jinshi feel awkward and I’m never a fan of them because of how maomao isn’t showing interest and jinshi seems like he doesn’t want to ask before starting. Something needs to change there for that aspect of the show to be likeable. It’s been my only (I don’t want to say complaint, the show is good) complaint
@Emrys_ Yeah I understand your concern. It's actually a trope I notice towards shoujo anime, that it seems forgivable since they're the main pairs but arguably that feels so off if irl. I can get past it tho since I know it's just fiction. D:

So overall I don't really have a lot to say since the plot tended to fly over my head at times. But I think this was a far better season than the first, it had really good moments and imo much better storytelling.

Shisui being alive at the end is really random since I swear she got shot like 2 or 3 times but idk im happy for her since she seems to be at piece.

Overall a great season and im excited for the sequel that got announced

Some folks complaining about the (as of now, still fairly minor; wish it were even more major at times) romance element of the series and would apparently prefer a dull affair where both parties involved enter into a lengthy and formal verbal exchange and series of written contracts asserting in unambiguous, explicit terms and detail mutual consent and affirmation of every hand hold, gracing of the cheek, hug, and attempted kiss each and every step of the way, but all I can say is thank God it's not like that and has at least a marginal amount more zest and life to it than where such considerations would drag it (into ultra-vanilla sterile nothingness).

That would be bad and off-putting enough in a series set on modern-day Earth, but in a high fantasy/secondary world empire modeled on the historic Tang and Ming Chinese dynasties, it would be downright a farce and I can imagine few approaches in the writing more unwelcome.

I'm not sure if historical fiction can even reasonably exist in the imaginations and the world envisioned by such folks, as characters, or at least characters who aren't overt central villains of the piece, behaving in ways which conflict with their present-day ideology and sensibilities is so anathema.
