Also don't forget to mention most suitable aspect ratio in your opinion.
Basically tell me in what video quality are anime meant to be watched?

1080p and 720p are obviously good, but I don't mind if it's lower. Some older anime aren't available in high resolution anyway.

1080 and 720, but of course a lot of older anime look good in 480 and even 360 [like 1st Saint Seiya], so it depends, I guess whenever I look up subs for random older shows I just get used to the resolution I find it in, cuz It's always in 720, yeah but anything older below 360 is a no XD, from the new ones anything below 720 is also a no.

The real resolution of most modern anime is around 900p, then they're upscaled to 1080p.

EDIT: the most suitable resolution to watch anime is thus 1080p, since 720p would be a downgrade.

Well, the frames are drawn at a different resolution, from what I’ve seen (something like 1630 x 920 or something) and then scaled up to 1080p in AE (content-preserving upscale).

by default animators draw in 720p resolution because drawing more bigger is much harder and time consuming anyway so yes most 1080p and 4k anime are upscaled https://www.animenewsnetwork.com/answerman/2016-07-06/.103696

Honestly I prefer everything in 1080p but if it's not available I'll take what I can get. Some older anime is very hard to find beyond 360p.

@Serafos Although they may not currently be available in higher resolutions, many older anime like Cowboy Bebop were painted on cells which have the potential to be re-scanned at much higher than even so-called 4K or so-called 8K, if there was demand.

It's newer anime which are entirely digitally created which have a hard limit on the resolution they can be shown at without up-scaling.

Edit: I've no idea what the OP meant by "objective resolution" either. Since they've refused to clarify when asked I'm assuming they don't know what those words mean either.

That would be the max. resolution of the screen you watch anime on, if that's what you mean.

@Zarutaku Video resolution refers to the number of pixels in a video frame, which determines how clear and detailed the video is. The more pixels, the higher the resolution.
Common video resolutions:
480p: Standard definition (SD) resolution
720p: High definition (HD) resolution
1080p: Full HD resolution
1440p: Quad HD (2K) resolution
2160p: 4K resolution
3840x2160: 4K resolution
7680x4320: 8K resolution
Aspect ratios
Video resolution is often measured in a standard aspect ratio, such as 16:9 for computer monitors and TVs. Other common aspect ratios include 9:16 (vertical) and 1:1 (square).
Video quality
Higher resolution videos look better on larger screens, while lower resolution videos are usually fine for smaller screens.
Video use cases
For YouTube, the recommended resolution is 1920 x 1080 pixels (full HD). For more detailed projects, such as video trailers, 4K or 8K may be used.

@LenRea Like I said, the most suitable resolution is the same as the max. resolution of your screen. You can still watch at lower resolution, but that's less suitable because of decreased sharpness. You can also watch at higher resolution, but that's pointless because of downscaling.

@LenRea Wow. Okay, I didn't think that was close. "Optimal" would be a better word.

For old, cell stuff, then higher is better. For digital stuff then the resolution it was made at. Optimal aspect ratio would be the one the anime was made in.

I don't generally like up-scaling effects.

720p is acceptable for some series, but that's as low as I'm willing to go. 480p just doesn't cut it for me anymore.

In general, 1080p is fine on my monitor and TV.

I still haven't made the jump to 4K after all those years, anime or otherwise. I don't really see that much added benefit.

If it's an older anime, like pre-2005, lower than 1080p is fine. I think these anime were made to look good on blurry CRT TVs... But 360p might be a little too low.

No preference on aspect ratios.

I don't think many anime make a conscious decision on aspect ratios anyway. Not sure why Shoushimin Series from last year intentionally picked a wider aspect ratio, but pretty soon I wasn't really noticing it.

240p >:D

Frankly, I've heard that lower resolutions in video streams actually look worse on newer displays due them having more pixels than older ones. Haven't tested this hypothesis before, but it'd be quite ironic.

In any case, I'll take what I can get, and I'm satisfied even with 720p. Given a choice, 1080p is a decent enough choice, a compromise between resolution and file size. Because I don't want things to be absolutely giant filesizes.

720p is the most optimal for me.

Below that the visual isn't that enjoyable.

Above that is a waste of time and space.

I think that 720p is good enough for majority of anime.

1080p is worth it if animation has lot of detail, but there is no point in higher resolution than that. 480p is still watchable, but lower resolution than that looks bad.

For digital productions, whatever the original resolution/FPS/aspect ratio were is optimal. I find the artifacting introduced in upscaling from 480p or 720p annoying. Even 1080p upscaled by my AV system to 2k or 4k can look pretty or pretty wonkly. Don't know why, but things aren't consistent from one title to another.

Most everything produced before 2000 was originally done for CRT TVs so they were 480i. 30 FPS 4:3 Back in the day you could download 240p remastered from pirate sites that varied greatly in quality on a comptuer monitor, most of wihich were 1024x768. Most of them were pretty wonkly though.

You have no idea what true pain is until you've watched fansubs on a CGA CRT.

If possible, 1080. Lots of other anime don't have that, so 720 would be a good second option.

I know there are old anime which can only be found on 480 or 360, but their image is often blurry, so those resolutions are not the most suitable option which OP asked for.
