Heres comes the crybait.

The worst influence Kimetsu had on the manga industry was making authors believe cramping some hyper melodramatic backstory to a side villain from absolutely nowhere was good writing. Nevermind the worst thing is that they are absolutely right and people will eat that up completely without even considering it.
For sure I'm really buying this sudden surge of extreme violence with the murder of a poor woman and the kidnapping of her kid for a bit of money from 2 completely unnamed dudes with not even their faces shown. Did she fucked over the yakuzas? Did she had debt so insane someone threaten to take her child if she didn't paid? That's what I choose to believe because for all we know this is the most brutal and uncalled for payoff with a total absence of setup.
Obviously the emotion conveyed here is "look how unlucky she is, she didn't deserve any of this", but I don't think fictionnal characters as people, they are merely writing devices, and in this case putting such an amount of brutality just for the sake of making the audience cry without any justification is quite frankly, pretty cliche and cheap.
However what I will not deny is that beautiful directing and that magnificent piano track, didn't expect less from Kensuke Ushio, composer of Ping Pong's ost, one of the greatest soundtrack of all time, but still top notch.

My biggest concern for sure is this will be praised so highly that even people saying it's the best episode ever created wouldn't even be hyperbolic. Unfortunately for me, I have grown up of only having emotional response towards art and media and I can only conclude this was wildly incoherent tone shift for an action/romance shonen to switch from fighting wacky ghosts/aliens and finding the main dude's balls to the painful life of a single mom trying to raise her child while crippling in debt.
You could just write one shots if you want to do this kind of tragic silent short movies with overlaying music, insert them in a shonen which will switch to crude comedy next episode feels more of a petty attempt to catch an unsuspecting audience than anything else. But what do I now anyway, this episode will make the show go from 8.60 to 9.05 I guess lmao.
@James-LastOmnic I stopped reading in the first phrase, dude really thinks Kimetsu no Yaiba created or influenced the whole "super sad past for villains" trope in manga and anime hahahaha did you started watching anime in 2019 or something?

Sooo heartbreaking. I did not expect to cry ='( Peak anime episode right here. I've always loved Dandadan's comedy, but the drama and depth of emotions displayed in this episode is outstanding.

Amazing visuals and direction as well!

That could have been a 10/10 episode!
The execution is perfect, no doubt about that. I'm just not a big fun of the content itself.
It feels a bit cheap to me that Acro-Silky confused Aira for her daughter. Maybe it would have been better if Aira was actually her daughter? idk.
Also I don't get how Aira was able to see her in the first place if she was dead. (And it's not good if the most important scene doesn't make sense.)
Overall, (Controversial Opinion Alert!) Episode 5 is still my favorite!

@James-LastOmnic I pretty much agree with you, I can't understand what was so good in this episode that made people praise it to high heavens, I thought people made fun of things like Kimetsu no Yaiba when they give a sad backstory to the villain of the week. I don't mind when villain get a backstory and I actually welcome it, but I hope it isn't some kind of one-off villain that we will probably never see again, like, I don't think we even know which was Acro Silky's name before turning into that. Actually, I'm not surprised about this kind of writing, and I wouldn't totally blame Kimetsu no Yaiba for it, that series didn't invent sudden sad backstories, but the problem is that the author was Tatsuki Fujimoto's assistant, and if you have watched or read Fujimoto's work you'll see he likes to add things to just shock the viewers, you can see something like the recently released Look Back for example, but Fujimoto tends to be even more vapid than just saying "please cry". I know I don't control people's emotions, so it's fine if they cried and that made the episode their best episode of 2024, but this episode wasn't particularly special even between battle shonen's emotional episodes.
@Ionliosite2 eh, depends on how empathic you are and how much you are able sympathize with the characters, you would've been able to enjoy the show. Rather than constructive critique, I'm sensing a hint of irrational hate from you on the show. I really fail to understand how you perceive this as a shock value rather than a plot point explaining how Acro became a lingering spirit. Execution of portraying Acro's backstory was brilliant. I guess it'd be better to ask this: what do you think would've made this better?

My goodness I was NOT expecting to witness such a heartbreaking episode, agh... I was so devastated to see what happened to the tragic story of the mother and daughter who simply wanted to live peacefully together as her daughter grows up. I was so devastated and heartbroken when those loan sharks(?) crashed their home and abducted her daughter. No idea what happened to her poor daughter but maybe she's.....dead?

Acro-Silky's backstory was unexpectedly tragic and I cried from watching this. Even I teared up from seeing the funeral of Aira's mom when she was a very young girl where her dad told her that her mom was on a very faraway place and not coming back for a very long time. That speech tho, it really REALLY hit me hard. 😢😭

Dang, this episode got me... ;_;

Best episode of the show so far. I've appreciated what Science SARU has done so far with the animation, music, etc. but tbh I wasn't really enjoying the show as much as I was hoping. Didn't think the jokes were landing. Wasn't liking the characters much, but this was a beautifully crafted episode. Hope we get more of this and just a little less of Okarun and Momo being awkward around each other.

Sh*t, i didn't expect i'll crying from watching "Modern Shounen" shows. Nowadays, Shounen usually just fail to deliver sad messages and even make it became like edgy. But, the elements of this episode such as backsound, animation, and character just literally crying that showed from sad backstory, reaction, and conclusion at the end are so well-executed. Great job Dandadan's staff 🫡

Ok dude this was actually so good. The backstory on the spirit that kept calling Aira her daughter was so heartwarming. Seeing that her own daughter was ripped away from her. How she must have felt wondering with no clue. No point for life anymore. Forgetting who she was. Its so beautiful.

Now as she goes to a void or the afterlife, Aira makes her choice to a hopefully better place.

Just finished watching the 7th episode. I'm almost 40 years. Male. The last time I cried was 2 year or 3 years ago - that was a really bad time for me.

I have a 5 year old daughter and a wife. We live in Japan. We live in a small apartment with tatami rooms. My salary is not good. My kid goes to gymnastics classes every Saturday. We buy her a lot of clothes...toys... We always buy her her favorite food. We always spoil her with the nicest things.

This episode is too realistic for me. It is too scary. I can't even put into words what I was feeling while watching this episode... It's too much.

I just cried... Really hard... This is not normal .. I think I am going to have a panic attack.

No. I won't. I will now lie down, ease this feeling by continuing the sci-fi book I am reading. ... It will all be alright.

If I can rate this episode. It will be a 9.9/10. Nothing is perfect. Nothing will ever be perfect... I will never let my wife watch this episode...

I feel like when Aira's mom died, and Acro Silky died, maybe it was simultaneous. Maybe those deaths randomly connected them both and hence they saw each other. There could be all sorts of explanations but it could just be random, to me it wasn't cheap, it was genius and adds to the complexity of the story.

@gorkthe134th it was implied that pink haired girl had spiritual powers that are a bit above average. Plus, kids are known to be able to see ghosts and such.

Holy, they cooked so damn hard. Thought it was a pretty nice tragic backstory in the manga, here I was left speechless. Science SARU elevating the emotional highs to another level altogether. This may be the adaptation that will bring them universal recognition within the anime community.

Here's the ballet scene from the manga. Anime was quite a bit subtler about it's implication (and the prostitution as well)

Don't wanna be a jerk here, but I thought that I watch wacky shounen about stolen balls and meme fights with ghosts & aliens, not random forced drama with characters who had like 20 minutes of screentime.

It's really well directed, but made me bored cause it's just so unneseccary in a show like this.

Aira's character was a bit interesting for me when they added her. For some of you, she rubbed people the wrong way. Whilst I am not emotional watching her backstory unfold, it is so well made. They better make her a super interesting character going forward.

Okarun had mouth-to-mouth her, and the preview suggests she will try to kiss him. If she can rival Momo as the best girl candidate, then the superb animation in the montage will be worth it.

I figured this one would be a big hit with most folks, tearjerker stories be like that sometimes. And I will admit it was awesome, very well done, every scene played out in a way to get the most amount of tears out of people when the gut punch happened, and since I just watched Shiki, this isn’t the first time I’ve seen how desperate a mom can get when her child is at stake, really powerful stuff.

But with that being said, it sadly didn’t get a single tear out of me, and that’s mainly because of manga readers hyping it up last week, and also because it was so easy to see coming, I mean she’s already a ghost lol, take a wild guess how things turned out with her kid. I will not deny that it was a downright awful situation tho, I won’t blame anyone for getting emotional after seeing that, it was very hard to watch even if I didn’t cry, and there’s also the fact this is a realistic situation and is an example of how cruel our world can be. Maybe if they didn’t spend as long as the good times it could have been more effective imo, because knowing that something bad is gonna happen the whole time that wholesome stuff is happening just took me out of it a bit, I was just thinking “okay, get on with it”, but once again, it really is fantastic stuff even if it didn’t work for me.

And to tug on heartstrings even more, her ghost is gonna fade away from existence like she never even existed because of how souls (auras) work in this world, the ghost version of her had it coming because of what she did to Aira but for the person she was in life, very sad to see, the bright side tho is that she won’t suffer anymore. And I guess this means Aira may or may not get powers of her own after receiving the aura of the ghost mom, that and she’ll be a better person most likely after this event, I’m looking forward to seeing how things go with her as part of the gang going forward.

What happened to the child?
@Mavuika Im not a Manga reader, but saw the discussion about it, and in the Manga, there is a pannel in which she, goes to heaven with her child. So, the child also died, which makes it more tragic.

I knew this ghost had a tragic backstory for sure, her child probably died. She was looking her child through Aria. But, the Anime, is very lighthearted (until now), comedy focus and maybe even slight romance. I didnt expect they would show the backstory of the ghost and how it would hit in the feels as much as this.

Well... Where i am from, there was alot of folklore stories (lets leave it at that) of people who died with some regrets (stuff like losing a child, a fight with their children, the child leaving etc), they never rested in peace, so they became ghosts hunting the living and sometimes, not by evil intent, to pass time with living children projecting their child in them. I feel, Japanese may have similiar stories. And here also, (again old folklore) some people have the gift sometimes see ghosts, a thing this show touches and i feel is also mixed in Japanese folklore. So, i think that explains it.
