I have things On Hold because they're either Mid compared to newer anime I started loving, or I forgot what was happening and should start from the beginning.

Because I am stupid and forget to pick things back up after what were supposed to be "short" breaks so I keep them there to come back where i left off

My on-holds are hard to find anime, usually with missing episodes. So it's more of a reminder should the remaining episodes pop up somewhere.

I can't find them online/they aren't translated into english

They're actually perfectly fine so there's no real answer. I dropped them at some point, often for inexplicable reasons.

They're actually sorta bad or uninteresting but I still want to give them a second try/use them to stave off boredom.

It's not something I'm interested in but there's something about the show that holds promise, so I want to watch a bit more

If it is a 100+ episode anime series, I might only watch 10 to 15 of the episodes...because it is probably not worth the time watching every epiaode imo.

They're lower priority watches to me. Sometimes for the same reasons you gave.

A lot of it is just me starting too many things without finishing enough.

I only put anime on hold when they're still technically airing, but the next episodes will come out months later. This is usually due to delays (Zom 100, Nier Automata) or when MAL hasn't already figured out how to deal with the split cours of Netflix anime.

When it comes to completed anime, if I don't feel like watching anymore I always drop instead of leaving them on hold.

Well the only anime I have on hold is HXH I watched it in 2016 made it to chimera arc then stopped told my self I’d watch it later and later has turned into 8 years and in between then I’ve been majorly spoiled on every second time frame and nanosecond. Which has both made me disinterested in picking it up but also interested in picking it up bc the spoilers were really good. It might just stay in limbo forever honestly. As for my manga I keep stuff in there that is currently publishing but I don’t necessarily want to keep up with so I revisit randomly every couple of months or years.

Popular and highly rated series that I wasn't able to complete. Probably because I wasn't in the mood. I usually pick them up later to watch.

Just one piece because I watch by arcs. Manga is a lot more because it's either series I am waiting for volumes to come out or its ongoing series that I read when a bunch of chapters are available.

Everything in my On Hold can be classified in one of four ways:

a) Shows I watched and enjoyed out of sequence as a kid and will likely never finish

b) Long shows that I just needed to take a break from but plan to finish eventually

c) Shows I started on a streaming service that left said service or went behind a paywall but will finish when I have legal access again

d) Shows I watch with my wife that I only continue when she wants to watch as well

I rarely put anime on hold as I generally prefer to finish (or drop) in one go, but when I do it's because I'm not completely sure I want to continue watching that series.

Usually it's because I started something, enjoyed it, got busy with real life so I put it on-hold and then forgot about it. By the time I remember that I watched it, it's been several months and new shows have come out that I want to watch more. When I consider picking the on-hold series up again, it's been so long that I've forgotten most of it and am left feeling discourage because now it feels like I have to watch it from the beginning before I remember what happened.
...At least let me finish.

A few reasons:

Series i grew up with but didn't finish (IE: Pokemon and Naruto which had hundreds of episodes and i was watching them on tv), plus some series that i dropped because they were either removed from a streaming site i was using or because i lost access to that streaming site (My cable provider had Anime Network, but we lost that provider and went to a cheaper one which didn't have it)

Series i lost interest in and stopped watching voluntariliy

ANd i also have a habit of using On Hold as a second Plan To Watch section, full of series that i give a higher priority to my PTW. A smaller list that's not as glutted
My waifu is the most wonderful waifu. Mai Valentine.

We're freaking out that we're running out of time, but to do what? Should i stop and think of that? Is there something i could do to slow it down? Live in a day for once, instead of watch it sprinting by

The only anime I have currently On Hold is Gintama. I only watched 25 episodes and need to continue... someday.

I'd also add the shows I'm slowly rewatching if I could, but they stay in Watching for some stupid reason.

For manga and manhwa to check new chapters, read later and see new translated chapters. For anime to watch later.

Blood-C The Last Dark Special - Episode 7 is hard to find/no English subs
Cream Lemon - I don't watch very much hentai, I saw episode 8 during someone's stream.
Girls und Panzer Specials - I pretty much have watched all of them, but MAL counts them in a weird way. I might fix this later.
Phantom Thief Jeanne - Busy with other shows, I'll pick it up again when I feel like watching it.
Kill la Kill Specials - Episode 2 is hard to find/no English subs
Queen's Blade OVA Specials - Episode 2 is hard to find/no English subs
Queen's Blade: Unlimited - Episode 2 is hard to find/no English subs
A Certain Scientific Railgun T: Motto Marutto Railgun - At the time I watched it episode 2 wasn't out yet, I'll get around to it later during a rewatch of the entire franchise.
Touhou Unofficial Doujin Anime: A Summer Day's Dream - Anime isn't finished yet, might be years or even decades before it is if ever.

Most of my on-hold manga are ones I have digitally but haven't read yet, except for Black Lagoon which I've finished but is still publishing.

For anime, on-hold is where I put those anime I don't plan to watch along the rest of watching. This means that there are still anime in watching that could be on-hold but I just refuse to admit it.

Manga on the other hand is different. Manga on-hold are those that are dropped not because they are bad, but because they are just too long and don't progress with the plot so I want to read other things instead. Like @Dauphine said.

There's various reasons for anime to end up in my on-hold. Some of them I started and just didn't really like but would like to get around to someday. There's a couple in there that are really long and I just don't have time for. It's also common for MAL to not close entries for certain shorts for really long periods of time, so rather than keeping them in my "watching" list I find "on-hold" to be more accurate since I can't currently watch more of them and probably won't be able to for a long time. Some of the anime in my on-hold I actually could finish now, but I just haven't gotten around to.

This basically. It's also where I put any OVAs that I'm watching that have irregular release schedules and hentai.

Anime I've started but had to stop for many reasons and just instead of having it clog watching and instead of chucking it on dropped if it's still got my attention I put it on the hold then forget about it for a while. Then I need to be in the mood to watch it and by then I'm watching something else

I usually lose interest halfway through watching it but not entirely closing the door to picking it up again. But then again sometimes I pick up my dropped anime too so it really is random and I've had some shows on hold for several years now lmao.

I just put it there when there's a really slow season (like the one rn) and instead of finding new anime or my PTW I just see my on holds over and over again like opening the fridge only to not eat anything but opening it again in a few hours.
