Am reading responses here and people really need to learn the difference between animation and art style. Show has gorgeous art but it's animated like shit. There are so many frames missing between the key frames. It's like they make 3 images, maybe four, for each dialog and then swap 1, 2, 1, 2, 3, 2, 3, 1... It's just frames repeated. There are very little dynamic shots. All of them are still with multiple layers of repeated frames. Perhaps panning or zooming in/out. Only exception is that fight where he's trying to survive and that scene only lasts like 30 seconds but it's still choppy.

ClowerWorks is known for their animation, but while art is still great it feels too choppy for their work. Look at, for example, Spy x Family. Top notch animation all around. People reacting and moving. While talking their bodies are not still. It's just good.

You clearly don't know what shit animation looks like if you think this is animated like shit lol

Well, here it is. From the creator of Assassination Classroom, another anime adaptation of a Weekly Shonen Jump manga has finally started airing. I've read a bit of this manga so I'm quite familiar with this. Lots of blood everywhere, and uncensored decapitations too. I doubt this show will be popular though.

@Peenutz yes I did. Have you watched the episode itself? It's like 10 frames per second at the max. Also it's rife with still shots and only something moving. Like people not moving at all while he runs through them. Still shots of people and only their mouths moving and even then it's like 3 frames swapped. So so many shortcuts and they try to mask them by panning or zooming in and out. Art is very pretty but it's far from fluid or good animation. The main battle where he's trying to survive is the most obvious part of this.
@MeanEYE You mfing dumbass. I’m gonna not reply after this because in one message you have showed me that you don’t have the slightest clue about animation. First of all, it’s all run at 24 FPS, very cool huh? That’s the anime standard. Also fps has absolutely nothing to do with the quality of animation! Part of animation is actually build up and release, it’s one of the core things they teach you if you try to learn animation. Typically when you do these types of things you might hold a pose for several frames, and that’s what gives it impact. If everything was animated on 1s like you seem to want, there would simply be no impact or actual fluidity. Cutting frames is what gives 2D animation its realism. And what’s actually super cool, is that if you watch the entire first half of the episode that was in the town area, you will see very fluid and life like character acting!

I truly hope this helps you. Maybe you will take a lesson from this and go try to actually educate yourself on this topic ☺️

@Cestlavie_ okay. You are right, I exaggerated. It's far from "shit". But in context of the studio it's far from their best work.

The art and animation were well done.

I really enjoyed that just about the entire show, this kid is running away from people, that was hilarious.

I totally called it, when the kid said "I should die with my people", I knew the priest was going to push him to experience almost dying, so that he would want to live.

I really enjoyed this anime and look forward to watching it.
Note: I don’t lazily watch 3-5 episodes, biasedly compare to other anime, or unfairly judge by surface level similarities. With every anime I start, I watch the entire series, both Japanese Sub & English Dub, then judge each anime based on what they present, to give an honest and fair rating.

Ah so we are in for one hell of a ride. Went from 0-100 real quick. The op was a banger and if Cloverwork being behind the adaptation it is coming from the mind of the man who brought us assassination classroom so it’s going to be a journey and I’m already hooked 👏

@MeanEYE All ill say is that i would advise you to go to stuff like sakugabooru to learn a bit more about animation, and to also see the posts from this show that are on there, because they are certainly of extreme high quality, both drawing, and animation wise.

Very good point about the "tonal whiplash." But it was so strange that I'm still kind of interested.

The absolutely gorgeous colors, carefree atmosphere and goofy/annoying comedy, smash-cutting back-and-forth with horrific violence, tragedy and almost nightmarish imagery. Add to these some stunning "elusive" animation and striking artistic flourishes.

It was way more unhinged than I expected, and I just have to see where they go from here.

The art is so great, the peak of the episode and the first introduction of the characters is good, but the music background is-not bad but i didnt get it, but the overall is so GOOD, this is peak ofc, hope this anime will be a long run series(with a break like 4 or 5 moths so the anime episodes cant catch the manga chapters) So yeah. I hope cleverWorks do its best(i hope it will not like The promised neverland) THIS IS PEAK

CleverWorks really need to make this series a long run anime, its so wholesome for the art and fun for Opening and Ending, the background music sounds great, and the PEAK of the episode. I even thought that i watch this thing more than 23 minutes, its seem so long, made me didnt realize its just a 23 minutes episode. I hope CloverWorks can do its best so yeah, PEAK!

I hope their make this anime seriously, please dont make this anime like the promised neverland, Im countinng on CloverWorks, Dont makethe adaptation of one of the best manga today to a downgrade, PEAK!

wow, this was one of the best first episodes i've ever seen.

it was an incredible introduction to the world, set up the plot very well, introduced some really intriguing characters; all amazing. i can't wait to see how the world develops in later episodes.
being set way back in ancient japan, there are going to be so many opportunities to convey japanese history and give a deeper look into the workings of clans and war. also it looks amazing but that's pretty much a given (cloverworks w)

overall really anticipating this show and am hoping that it fleshes out the world and characters as well as i'm hoping they do.

I liked how it was comedic and kinda boring at first, then suddenly turned into a dark turn where a traitor emerged and everyone was committing suicide for the sake of honor. Also, I'm loving the protagonist (Tokiyuki) already, especially when he was thrown on the cliff by the shaman and instinctively clung to life. The animation was beautiful too (it's Cloverworks, so what do you expect?) and the plot seemed interesting, so I'm looking forward to this~

Fantastic visuals aside, this is still the complete tonal whiplash that the manga is as well. The pacing and the comedy just don't work. Things kind of just happen one after another in the backdrop of a pretty horrifying scenario. I think the anime manages to present it somewhat better, but it's established from the source material, so it still fails.

And it gets worse in the manga, so I really hope the anime starts doing something different ASAP.

Unfamiliar with the source material, I decided to check this show out solely based on the visuals in the trailer, and on that front, I'm certainly not disappointed. The show has slick, seamless animation, with inspired directing and lively colors.

As for the writing, I thought the episode was tight and to the point, with a pleasant symmetry between the beginning and end, showing how the titular character's intrinsic characteristics will help him survive what's to come. I'm excited to see more development be given to the characters' relationship, as I've already caught some glimpses of interesting dynamics.

I don't usually enjoy historical anime, but goddamn this first ep is really good, definitely one of if not the best first ep of this season! I thought it's just gonna be a mediocre SoL show with historical setting, but then the sudden dark twist caught me so off guard in the best way possible. The story was quite easy to digest and entertaining, unlike most historical anime. I especially really like the use of colorful artstyle and the graphic depiction of the tragedy, imo the contrast was brilliant! And the cherry on top, both op and ed were bangers!

Definitely the hidden gem of this season and I'm really looking forward for the next eps!

That's a very eventful 1st episode. It's pretty weird seeing all the blood and gore in a kind of bright vibe and not somber. The MC also looked very accepting of the death of his clan. Thought there will a lot of histerical cry, a scene where he's froze or edgelord scene. Is there anything important being cut from the source material? Alas, Yeah, will see how it goes. Btw, the animation look fantastic.
I cannot bring myself to rate anime that I have completed below 5. Well, it just because I have use up my precious time to watch it. so, the worse you will get from me is 5 (changes may apply)

Very VERY quirky premise^^
I can see that kind of elusive trait applied to the maincharacter either creating plotholes all over the place or getting old, real quick...

But damn...
if it keeps looking as beautiful as this first Episode....I might go along

It's an okay start. A bit rushed and cramped to a point of being hard figure out across how much time first episode spans. But story feels good and art style is great. Wish animations could be more fluid than slideshow at times. But we'll see.
@MeanEYE The very first chapter is as fast paced as this. So don't worry about the rest. :)

I discovered this through trailers and I'm glad I gave this a watch since the animation is honestly amazing. Surprised to know that CloverWorks is already at this kind of level and also the fact that Nakamura Yuichi is part of the cast won it for me. Definitely a hidden gem this season and deserves to be noticed more among the others.

The visual storytelling and embrace of surreal imagery really put this over the top for me, the story itself is a solid basis on its own albiet fairly familiar but the tone really made it pop, if it can keep up this level of creativity this is gonna be an absolute treat.

really liked the transition when the ball fell to the ground, and my whole mood from there changed completely crazy.

The first episode is interesting, comedic but not entirely so, with dramatic scenes that are almost horror-like, featuring indiscriminate and unscrupulous killings. I also appreciated the stylistic choices for the characters, the color combinations are very beautiful.

So, this is actually an indirect sequel to Heike Monogatari, transformed into Shonen Jump battle shonen... while maintaining the historicity and naturalism characteristic of the era... I do not even know what to say. It's like someone playing Luc Besson's Joan of Arc on Disney+. But what interests me even more is how they are going to develop the story taking into account the real fate of the characters and what happened that we actually started getting so many historical anime?

And yes, they actually raped and killed a seven year old girl? And this is part of the premise of my new Shonen Jump anime about shota samurai? What?
