Are there any very popular, or even classic cult shows that you caught back when the first season premiered? How do you feel now that these anime have truly become significant blockbusters and do you still follow these titles? Have you somehow tried to introduce them to new viewers in times, when these anime already get the status of classics?

The idea for this thread came to me when I realized that I still can’t get used to the fact that Konosuba is gradually starting to be considered an old show and some young anime fans only find out about it by chance thanks to a mention on Twitter. It’s even interesting how true this is for other big premieres of 2016 like ReZero, MHA or Princess Principal.

I think I can only think of two Citrus and shuumatsu no harem. I was reading the manga years prior to even the anime adaptation announcement.

I already knew about shingeki in 2013 when the anime started because I checked the manga in 2010, most people knew that a story as good as it will get an adaptation sooner or later. Unfortunately the art is so shit I had to cleanse my eyes after each reading session when I started the manga truthfully. Amazing how it's 2024 and it still plays with my life, april 30th with be a new beginning because volume 35 is coming.

I was there when chainsaw man was making its first part of the manga still. From what I remember it was just a niche community and I decided to catch up in 1-2 days.

Way back when Attack of Titan was just dropping its first season it was cool to follow along, and it was neat to wonder where the story was gonna go next. Finding out the plot twists along the way was cool. More recently, it was hype to be following along with Frieren.

@KingOfPneumos I understand you a little. I was introduced to the anime when it only had one season, but then my motivation was not enough for a fresh second season and I was only able to return to the show in the year of the finale.

@LSSJ_Gaming Has this manga gone memetic? I added it to my reading list during my search for current battle shonens, but I haven't started reading it yet.

I also feel the same thing about Konosuba. The opening for the new season was released and I was randomly surfing through the comments and there were people saying it's finally back with a new season after 7 years. It quickly hit me that 2017 was 7 freaking years ago. Small moments like this is what makes think time does indeed fly fast.

Anyway, for me it was Attack on Titan. It was a very popular show even back then, but never would the me 10 years ago imagine the series would be a global phenomenon regardless of how much I enjoy it now (which I don't).

I was there when "Attack on Titan" first came out, the first episode was amazing and jaw-dropping. The seasons and episodes made by Wit Studio were 10/10. And then MAPPA had to ruin it. Somehow, people enjoyed a mediocre continuation of it. Yikes. I hate MAPPA's adaptation, but hey, some people just eat that shit up.

I guess Spy x Family, but I was reading the manga long before the anime was released so I already knew it would be good if animated and acted well. It's a bit soon to call them classics, but I suppose most recently would be Frieren and Apothecary Diaries. In the case of Apothecary Diaries I was following that series before the manga even got an official English translation.

Do I still follow them even though they have become popular? Yeah, as long as I still feel the story is interesting. Do I introduce them to new viewers? Depends on if the person is new to anime or not. If they are new, sure; if they are not, then they probably have already heard of them so not necessarily.

Steins;Gate - it's a good show, but I didn't think it would have become popular and relevant for a long time. It doesn't seem like a show that would attract people at first glance. I even dropped it halfway the first time I watched it.

Attack on Titan - I've never seen something exploded as big as this anime, so I'm not surprised at how popular it is to this day.

I think the most interesting one for me is Code Geass, but I wasn't really there because I wasn't actually aware of seasonal anime and how to watch anime that are still ongoing in Japan - I was only watching anime on TV back then. However, I was buying anime magazines and had an older cousin who was into anime and I heard Code Geass a lot, I was even spoiled of the ending. The show became stuck to me until I discovered ways to watch ongoing anime online a few years after, and Code Geass was a well known title in the anime community (and I finally watched it). I was surprised it stayed popular then. Now it feels like a classic and that kinda feel bizzare whenever I remember those anime magazine articles and letters from readers talking about Code Geass and Lelouch.

I got into the chainsaw man manga pretty early on, I think only 8 chapters were out at that point. Followed Made in Abyss from the second episode. A place further than the universe by its first episode. also watched the first season of sao while it was still airing.

I wouldn't know if this would count, while maybe not it's exact premier ever, I saw "Project A-Ko" on the big screen in Japan back in the 80s when I was a kid. My parents took me to go see the movie with them at a theater during a time we were living near Osaka. "Departure: Ami, the Last Chapter" played before the main feature too.

Never really had to introduce "Project A-Ko" to anyone because over the years they kept on re-releasing the film from it's Western release on VHS to the early 2000s when they released a wide screen version on DVD to even today on Blu-ray. Everyone I have ever met in real life that is into Anime already knows about A-ko. Even recently Discotek Media has restored and remastered this classic Anime film on Blu-ray where I ended up watching it with a few of my real life friends while we played pool and were drinking beer all while it played on a brand new blistering 4k quality Bravia 65" TV. I think I own every Officially released physical copy of this film now, even own this film on Laserdisc too.

But I also saw "Akira" when it 1st premiered in the West in Cleveland, Ohio on the big screen at a local indie theater. Later on in the early 90s had the privilege to see it being shown multiple times at the Cleveland institute of Art when they threw aniamtion film festivals. Also bought the film when Streamline Pictures released it on VHS.

Probably the best instance of this for me would be the first season of Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya, which I followed via the a.f.k. TV-fansubs and discussed (dumb/cringe takes warning) as it came out back in Spring 2006. Can't really follow it anymore since the long hiatus in source material dried up any possibility of further anime adaptations. I haven't really tried to promote/proselytize for it either. For awhile, most viewers were willing to go back to watch notable anime from as long ago as 2006 (when anime in 16:9 AR and "approaching HD" resolutions became commonplace), including Haruhi, Death Note, Code Geass, Nana, Ouran HS Host Club, and others. So there wasn't a need for "spreading the gospel," as Konata Izumi would say. Plus, the "Endless 8" trolling in the second season kind of soured the anime viewerbase on the whole franchise, so pushing it too hard can call one's tastes/opinions into question.

  • Every show which fits your description that aired 2007 onward.
  • I don't particularly feel anything unusual, I don't readily form strong attachment to fiction I watch or read, and none of the shows from the time period which achieved mainstream popularity or cult status are among my favourites, although there's plenty of excellent stuff out there. I only follow the shows which left a memorable impression in a matter of fact manner, that is, I watch sequels and specials which come out afterward, but that's about it. I used to hang out in communities or fandoms or whatnot up until around 2016, but ultimately got disappointed by the whole thing.
  • I don't try to introduce any of such shows to new viewers, and I don't do recommendations on principle, because virtually every time I've tried before, it ended up a massive waste of time for everyone involved, because apparently I'm shit at judging people's character.

FLCL
Fullmetal Alchemist

Watched them both on Adult Swim back when they first aired in the US. Found them both by accident while channel surfing.

I also saw Spirited Away in it's first US theatrical run, back in 2000, I think it was.

Yuri on Ice I picked up around the time that episode 2 or 3 was airing, so not at the very beginning, but close.
It was also the reason I got a premium subscription to Crunchyroll-back then, if you had a free membership, they would delay new episodes by a week, and it was impossible to avoid spoilers online.
It was fun being there when it broke both Tumblr and Crunchyroll too.

All these have been very popular/classics (with some ridiculous Yuri on Ice backlash), and I have recommended all of them many times. Actually got some anime-averse friends to watch FMA. I tried to get them to watch FLCL, but it was too weird for them (although they did borrow my Magical Shopping Arcade Abenobashi dvd's and liked them).

Well I watched Digimon, Pokémon, Yu-Gi-Oh!, Beyblade and Medabots on tv but I wouldn't recommend any of them because they are for kids and bad in my opinion, besides the first Digimon, and even that one is not on par with Tamers.

I watched Naruto Shippuden, Bleach and One Piece when they were airing amd I wouldn't recommend amy of them because either they fell off in the longrun, got lots of filler, became ridiculously long and time consuming, or all of the above, plus my opinion on fighting shounen in general became far more negative with time.

I watched Hellsing Ultimate as it was coming out, I wouldn't need to recommend it, people gets there eventually, too bad part of the audience is robbed by the Abridged show.

I also watched Fate/Zero as it was airing, I loved it at the time, I wouldn't today, and it is also not a show that needs my recommendation, people get to watch it sooner or later. I also watched UBW but I don't think it has the same status as the previous examples to count it for the answer.

I watched several popular anime from 2016 to 2018 but I don't think they count as highly popular nor classics yet? Same thing with Vinland Saga.

And well I watched Edgerunners and Frieren alongside most everyone else, let's see if they become classics or keep being highly popular in the future.

Whaat was the other question? *scrolls up*

Eh I follow some that are still airing but that's about it, I dropped most of them or didn't bother to rewatch them.

What was the other one? *scrolls up*

Eh I don't care if anime I watch are popular or not, I care about them being good or not, enjoyable for me or not, and that's it, but good for them.

Also it's a good thing that those kodomo and nekketsu keep their fanbases, have you seen them?

Yeah, there was a large meme following for the manga before it started out because it looked hilariously edgy, but people stuck around because the story and art were pretty decent. There is a pretty large amount of shitposters in the fanbase because of the initial popularity coming off of memes, to the point where Shueisha and the author have noticed the overseas popularity and have mentioned some of the jokes and phrases the community has made on Twitter. It's definitely worth giving a try but i will say that most of the hilarity from the series comes from the fan creations and edits to the panels people have made since it seems to have inspired quite a bit of creativity for shitposters, while the manga itself doesn't have much that would stand out as funny per se.

when Demon Slayer just started airing in 2019 I guess, I was still considered a new anime-enjoyer at the time so I was looking for anime, then I found out oh this #500 popularity anime seems good and it's still airing, so I followed until it suddenly had a HUGE bang

from unheard anime to everyone in my class (including those who never watched anime) started talking about it, while I'm there feeling like I was there when it started
