How demanding are you when it comes to new anime and how often do they disappoint or meet your expectations? Does this cause your opinion to differ from or follow the general opinion? I was recently thinking about how some people either rave about most anime they watch, or find themselves disappointed by most, even the most highly rated seasonal shows. So I decided to ask people directly to find out how difficult it is to impress them these years.
I'm easily pleased by seasonals but i only pick stuff i think i'll enjoy. I try not to watch more than 6 at a time though so i do drop some shows here and there.
I’m not very demanding but I’m not too easy to please either. The art, synopsis, and tags may get me initially intrigued but what happens afterwards is what I focus on most.
"You fought to the end. You survived. That's why you're here now. I think that's something you should be more proud of."
- Vladilena Milizé
Based on how people hyped them, I had high expectations on the following anime:
Spring 2023)
- Oshi no Ko: great 1st episode, good eps 6-8, the rest is mediocre. Top 40 of the year
- Jigokuraku: it had a lot of potential, but it needed a way better execution (not just in terms of animation and directing but also screenwriting). Top 40 of the year
Summer: 2023)
- Dark Gathering: okayish, I like it but that's it. Top 30 of the year
- Zom 100: very good start, but it fell hard halfway through. Top 40 of the year
Fall 2023)
- Kusuriya no Hitorigoto: I initially thought it might be in my top 3 anime of the year, but I slowly realized that I didn't love it that much. Still in my top 10 of the year
- Sousou no Frieren: the opposite, from top 3 of the year at first to a solid AOTY and I'd say around my top 20 of all time
Winter 2024)
- Dungeon Meshi: already AOTY? Definitely if it keeps up.
- Solo Leveling: the SAO of this decade, I mean as the anime with a popularity/quality ratio approaching infinity
3/8 hyped anime meeting my expectations is okay, considering that every season also has some good anime that weren't hyped at all.
Depends, if it's an unknown anime which I haven't heard through forums/anywhere than I have only basic "demands" so I expect the show which will be enjoyable.
If it's something which got hyped after the release and it is a show which I haven't watched at the premiere than I have demands on higher quality of animation, music and story.
If it's something which got hyped before the release or even before the announcment of release [when it was a manga/ln only] than I have high demands on quality and animation, not for story as usually it won't meet such expectations.
For 1st scenerio the example is Metallic Rouge
For 2nd scenerio is Oshi no Ko or Frieren, as I haven't heard about it before the first episode.
For 3rd scenerio is Solo Levelling as I heard about it literally from the year the manhwa came out.

Demanding? No. Brutally honest? Yes
If i think something's great i'll say it's great, if i think something's shit i'll say it's shit, if i think something's just ok i'll say it's ok

Ok i think i made that super long list more for me out of curiousity so i dumped it in a spoiler button
Generally i don't go into an anime with really high expectations, so i wouldn't say it's hard to surpass those expectation and impress me, there are 2 exeptions to this though... sequels and adaptations of manga i've read, this is when expectations or hope are thru the roof, and it'll either be fulfilled (ex: Blue Exorcist s3, Zom 100, Demon Slayer s2 & 3) or get the agonizing response of "WTF did i just watch??" (ex: COTE s3, Chainsaw Man, JJK s2)
I'm pretty easy to please when it comes to anime, and my standards for what's worth watching honestly aren't super high.
I watch a small handful of anime every year that I feel like I totally wasted my time on, but I enjoy the vast majority of what I watch, at least to some extent. As long as it's at least decent, I'm probably happy with it.
Don’t really think that I get disappointed that often. I go into series with low expectations so that I can enjoy them for what the series are.
I would say at the moment from current series I only found Buchigiri disappointing so far.
I don't really demand much from the new animes, it's usually from the sequels or maybe manga/manhwa adaption. At times, when I watch trailers of new animes, and if I find it entertaining, I kind of build an expectation. It does disappoint me when animes don't meet my expectations
I'm pretty demanding about the things I view. No matter how hard I try, I'll never get to see all of the wonderful paintings, drawings, films or read all of the poetry, short stories, novels, non-fiction out there.
There are many things I'd rather do with my time than watch mediocre or bad anime, particularly if it is a large number of episodes.
I am not demanding when it comes to starting new anime to watch. I'll try to watch series just by the synopsis or pictures alone and sometimes even if I know I might not like it...because sometimes I end up liking them lol. However, I am more demanding when it comes to actually finishing them. If I get bored of a series I'll just drop it. But as long as I am enjoying the characters (the story doesn't even need to be that great for me to enjoy a series) I will complete it. I feel like the past few years I had more enjoyment out anime than disappointments....but that is due to me dropping so many things I wasn't liking 🤷♀️.
artstyle and dialouge is the dealbreaker for me. something like gokushufudou is completely watchable for me because it doesnt hurt to look at. and god awful anime with unnecesary(?) dialouge is what ruins a show in my opinion.
The more anime I watch the more I find myself being pickier and more critical of shows. Every season there a few really big shows, I'll watch them and while most of them aren't necessarily bad, they're not all too special either.

@DigiCat Did you still like the new season of The Exorcist?
@DigiCat Did you still like the new season of The Exorcist?
@RobertBobert ?? I listed Blue Exorcist as one of the examples of sequels done well xD
Actually s3 has been the best so far, i found the pace of the first 2 seasons a bit slow, the only thind i'd say i like a bit less in s3 is the change in animation style, but it's still really good animation and nothing to complain about

@DigiCat This was more of a rhetorical question, since this franchise was very popular at the time I was in college, but it was only relatively recently that I watched the first season for the first time.

@RobertBobert Yeah it did seem to've been forgotten for a while, the announcement of s3 was a very welcome surprise
I don't care much cause i don't follow seasonals. Unless there's announcement's for a manga i already love. There's usually 1 per season, the rest i either don't care about at all or passively add to my ptw to get to later.
My waifu is the most wonderful waifu. Mai Valentine.
We're freaking out that we're running out of time, but to do what? Should i stop and think of that? Is there something i could do to slow it down? Live in a day for once, instead of watch it sprinting by
I'm not gonna lie, new releases rarely surprise or impress me anymore. You could say I'm harder to crack in that sense.
I suppose that's just one of the drawbacks of following anime long enough. I feel I've touched every inch and corner of the medium to the point that I already know everything that has or could be done. Perhaps I know too much for my own good. Such as seeing the wizard behind the curtain has made me jaded. I realize that's a cynical way to look at things, which I honestly don't like. A part of me wishes to be brand new and impressionable again like when I was younger. That feeling of wonder and euphoria was much easier to come by. I remember when I could watch anime purely for enjoyment, and not think in critical aspects. I'm always chasing that feeling in hope, but I can't seem to grasp it with the majority of present-day titles. More often than not, I have to look to the past to get that feeling.
Some newer fans might not realize the recurrent nature of anime. There's always been a degree of copying even in the earlier decades, but it's considerably more noticeable today. Now, more than ever, anime is inspired primarily by just other anime. That's not necessarily a bad thing, mind you. It surely limits creativity and innovation when done superficially, though. The lack of risk-taking and frequency for derivative, self-referential, and even pandering expression for ease of profit are conspicuous. I've said this before, but I'll reiterate because I still believe it's true. Many new seasonals are akin to taking an old car and putting a new coat of paint on it. It may look different on the outside, but the frame and core are the same. Seeing the exact same formula, ideas, tropes, structure, and themes repeatedly gets monotonous eventually. If you've seen a certain amount of a particular genre, it's almost as if you've seen them all. There are exceptions, of course. I'm mainly referring to the bigger picture of the landscape that is anime.
I never watch shows until they've finished airing anymore (except for the sequels of two particular shows I love), bc I've been traumatized by stuff like Yakusoku no Neverland S2 and Ousama Ranking.
I don't have high expectations for most anime I watch, and most tend to be not great. It is what it is, I'm not watching anime primarily for entertainment value so it's not surprising.

@Pyro What are the anime you feel are like cars with different coats of paint from eachother?
I just watch what I think it's cool, I could always drop it if it's bad but most times I find a certain element that I like, could be a hot girl, cool OST, nice setting, whatever. And when it ends, I can watch something else.
I just want something entertaining. Even subjectively bad anime have their own brand of entertainment. And yeah, I'm often disappointed because it's rare for me to find more than 2 or 3 anime a season that I rate above average (though this season so far, as ratings can still change since the anime aren't over yet, has been fairly decent as I have five anime that I've rated above average with 6's). And I've found that my opinion tends to differ from the norm as my rating scale seems to be different from the norm as I use the full scale of 10 (with 5 being average and 6 being slightly above average, 7 being good, 8 very good, 9 a near masterpiece, and 10 as close to masterpiece as I've found). And also because I love watching isekai (which the majority of people seem to hate). Even subjectively bad ones because I find isekai relaxing. They rarely rate higher than a 4 or 5, but they're fun to watch (at least to me) and I like things that make me relax (I have anxiety, stress, and panic disorders so relaxing and distraction is important).
@RobertBobert Yeah it did seem to've been forgotten for a while, the announcement of s3 was a very welcome surprise
What you think of the series so far?
@DigiCat I was glad that the studio "cancelled" certain episodes in the first season as non-canon so I could finish it earlier, but I still don't have the motivation to continue.
